From Esquire, “The Prospect” by Charles Pierce, May 1, 2002…
The White Sox — and, because of that, [Bob] Fontaine — have a lot riding on [Joe] Borchard. They’ve already spent enough money on him to label him a $5 million prospect. He’s not likely to take his dough and bolt back to Stanford; his season in Birmingham last year was probably too good for that. But there are a hundred other variables between where Borchard is now and where Fontaine wants him to be.…

Joe, 32, retired as a Bluefish from Bridgeport on June 1, 2011.
Bob Fontaine, Jr. accepted a job with the Mariners in ‘03 and was Director of Scouting until 2008.

How the hell did the Cardinals win the World Series… Getting hot at the right time I guess… I feel bad for Texas.
October 29th, 20119:57 am
I am really pulling for Nolie…..hope the docs get his health problems under control–God’s speed to him.
October 29th, 20119:58 am
ESPN boston says terry pendleton is a long-shot option for the next red sox manager.
October 29th, 201110:32 am
..i guess now i’m supposed to say hats off the the cards. they dersrved it. what an amzain team? well, blank that blank. damn you braves for tanking in september and making us beat you at the end. again. would not have mattered anyway. the phillies still would’ve lost to somebody else. that series was classic ’90s braves
October 29th, 201110:33 am
The Cards really are an amzain team
October 29th, 201110:35 am
they are, but what was ron washington thinkg? from dan oliver to to his starter for game 7. this dude screwed up the starting staff like jim leyland in the ‘06 ws.
October 29th, 201110:37 am
I don’t know what he was thinkg
October 29th, 201110:38 am
First time I’ve ever watched Gameday knowing I will be there to watch the game later. The crowd there now will have quite a head start on “preparing” for the game…
philfan, ron washington’s team put him in a tough spot because they blew game 6 twice. they had the world series won 2 times, and couldnt get the third out. wash used alot of bullets in game 6 (derek holland for instance) because he was trying to lock it down, and that hurt him in game 7, i think.
October 29th, 201110:42 am
I don’t think it was an impressive series for either manager
Patrick, hush. Berkman, Pujols, Motte, Freese all seem like good guys. Yeah LaRussa is really arrogant and not much a Holliday or Carpenter fan either, but just about every team has some jerks. I won’t go any further than that as I have never liked the Cards anyways, but they did deserve a title this time.
October 29th, 201110:43 am
and why wasn’t cruz playing deeper? 1st/2nd dude. nothing in front of you matters all that much. reminds me of game 4/’09 nlds. phils vs rockies. the rf was playing too shallow. allowing howard’s dbl to tye the game. ball should have been caught.
-oh well braves fans.they may have only one ws title, but at least they’re are no bucker/cruz moments to haunt you to the end of time. that one strike away madness is crazy
October 29th, 201110:44 am
David Freese hit .397/.465/.794 in the postseason.
October 29th, 201110:47 am
..i still had to see the carter dagger one more time. it was appropriate, but stilll
I was at Gameday for the UGA/Bama blackout
Really like that tweet from Joel Sherman:
Funny how it works: #Redsox went 90-72 and were majors’ biggest disappointment. #Cardinals went 90-72 and were majors’…
October 29th, 201110:48 am
He was very hot for someone with such a cold name.
“Hop on and I’ll carry y’all” he said, and they did.
October 29th, 201110:53 am
and why wasn’t cruz playing deeper?
yup. a question rangers fans will be asking forever.
October 29th, 201110:56 am
went to psu. remembering working with the gamday crew once. indirectky. it was the late ’90’s. back before erin andrews, when you had to provide your own …s. the bolnde that got to work with them was in my marketing class. she was cool. i knew her. got to shake their hands and hand out flyers. in the rain. oh the memories.
October 29th, 201111:11 am
Yes today’s game should tell us a lot. Rough few weeks ahead. Hoping for a couple more wins. At least beat the buckeyes.
October 29th, 201111:14 am
With the World Series over, I guess today will be mostly about college football.
October 29th, 201111:19 am
speaking of which. is lsu/bama that much better than everybody else that if the games( regular season sec title game) are close, the results don’t matter?
October 29th, 201111:22 am
Pounce you Bayou Bengals!
October 29th, 201111:25 am
i’m in no way a lsu fan. and certainly not a bama fan.but do they both get invited to the bcs title game… if one sweeps the other in two close, well played games?
October 29th, 201111:29 am
Might be a little too early to tell that yet.
October 29th, 201111:36 am
true. one more thing on babseball and then i’ll let it go. i think once you try to script october, you set up you’re own downfall. october baseball is about magic. that’s why you got to use your whole roster. once you start managing based on salaries and egos you become the new york yankees. or wait for it…. da phillies.
October 29th, 201111:45 am
I think post-season, like all short series, is a crap-shoot. Money and planning both often go awry
October 29th, 201111:50 am
Phils fan – they cant play each other twice before the championship game
October 29th, 201111:54 am
oh, thanks educating a pennsylvania retard.
October 29th, 201111:56 am
makes sense z. just trying to find a a way to let it go and move on to 2013.
What would be interesting to see is if Bama wins and then both win out. Bama then loses in the championship game to LSU. Bama is your SEC champ, but would Bama/LSU split the NC title or does LSU get it outright?
October 29th, 201111:57 am
I was at Gameday for the UGA/Bama blackout _ jeffrey
I was none to pleased with that stunt. That’s when I started to think Richt was losing whatever edge he had as a head coach in the SEC.
October 29th, 201111:59 am
so wait. are they in the same sub sec conf? because if they aren’t, your exmple is the one is was reff to. once next week and then again in the sec title game.
October 29th, 201112:00 pm
Mark Bradley »
Believe it or not, there was a time when UGA owned Florida
Yeah, I remember that, Bradley. It’s funny that the game has always been a big one, yet one side has dominated the other for long periods.
October 29th, 201112:03 pm
I thought that was what PhilFan meant.
October 29th, 201112:05 pm
Hell of a World Series. One strike away, twice, for the Rangers, woo thats gonna sting for a while.
October 29th, 201112:07 pm
Don’t I remember the Hershel teams running over Fla?
Pretty nice ride Freese got for winning the MVP.
October 29th, 201112:09 pm
yes, he did not freese up in the clutch
yup, and their pain somehow is gonna make me feel better. that and a win over the cowboys on sunday nite.
October 29th, 201112:10 pm
Bat,I don’t believe I will kid McFann anymore about Brian. I couldn’t believe Efrim thought I was serious last night about trading McCann. LOL
October 29th, 201112:13 pm
i think the braves/phils will be in the same position last weekend of the season 2012. but maybe with the braves in control this time.
Well, ZWacky, they won them. Running over or not.
October 29th, 201112:15 pm
oops. are you a Florida fan? If so I meant no insult
October 29th, 201112:16 pm
I’m with you there, Efrim is a very serious guy.
October 29th, 201112:24 pm
Nope, no offense. I’m a Dawg fan all the way, and running over people was what Herschel did.
Efrim seems to know a lot, especially about the draft and the minor league system.
October 29th, 201112:29 pm
Efrim is a great poster, just doesn’t always catch sarcasm.
October 29th, 201112:31 pm
Man I miss Larry Munson.
October 29th, 201112:34 pm
October 29th, 201112:40 pm
Bat and CB, oh, come on! I think I usually catch sarcasm. I picked up on the conversation late and saw one comment. I feel like I’m often sarcastic here…..
If McCan’t chokes again the way he did the end of this past season, I bet he won’t be a Brave for much longer.
October 29th, 201112:42 pm
Ugh, still can’t believe the Cards won. Where is Frank Wren at to pull a trade off? He likes to get everything done early….
October 29th, 201112:43 pm
They say that nice people do not use sarcasm.
October 29th, 201112:45 pm
DOB, enjoy your 80 degree weather in Zona while it’s snowing and 35 degrees here in Connecticut.
October 29th, 201112:46 pm
Zwacky, that describes Bat and I very well. We are both axe murderers,he does the killing and I help dispose of the bodies.
October 29th, 201112:48 pm
Now you are just pulling my leg.
Go Fighting Tigers!
October 29th, 201112:49 pm
ZWacky …………… They say all kind of things.
October 29th, 201112:50 pm
Does anybody know why they delayed free agency by a day? I can’t figure out what that was about.
McFann O O o Get Well Soon, Nolie!!
October 29th, 201112:51 pm
BMac did NOT choke, pea-brain. He was HURT!!!
CB I don’t believe I will kid McFann anymore about Brian.
What?? Well, then there’s no point in me posting anymore!…
October 29th, 201112:56 pm
McFann, well maybe I will but I will put a sarcasm alert in it for Efrim.
October 29th, 20111:00 pm
We were gone ………. I gave up, you did too
Bring on the Gators, I’m ready!!
October 29th, 20111:08 pm
DOB, enjoy your 80 degree weather in Zona while it’s snowing and 35 degrees here in Connecticut. — Efrim
Thanks. I will. Today it’s headed to upper-80s, and dry as a bone.
October 29th, 20111:09 pm
How did Gilmartin end up? Does he look good?
October 29th, 20111:10 pm
I loved it…I was on campus after Gameday and everyone was in black (even ran into Damon Evans…this was before his panty raid), the crowd was extra pumped…it was fun til the game
October 29th, 20111:17 pm
October 29th, 20111:40 pm
Phils fan – both Bama and LSU are in the SEC West, so they cant meet in the SEC championship game. One of them will be facing USC or UGA most likely in the SEC title game. I was referring to a possible National Title game rematch. Its possible if OSU Clemson and Stanford both lose a game.
Way to go, McFann….
October 29th, 20111:41 pm
October 29th, 20111:51 pm
“Blaming the season fiasco on one missed Baltimore chop with a very fast runner going to first? Get real N8.” Big Jake
First of all, good to hear that nolie is doing better. Can’t wait to spar with him soon.
But sorry dude, the above quote just shows how much you guys WANT me to be a Chipper basher so you can rip me for doing so.
At NO POINT did I “place blame” on Chipper for the season. It was simply one moment that seemed like a play that he has made 1000 times (probably more), that pretty much summed up how our final month went.
Get over yourselves. Blaming the season on Chipper’s miscue in Florida?
I watched the other 72 losses too. Plenty of blame to go around.
October 29th, 20111:59 pm
What did I do?…
October 29th, 20112:01 pm
Cleared out the room until unbelievable commented at the exact moment I did
October 29th, 20112:14 pm
Oh! I getcha…haha!…
October 29th, 20112:33 pm
Did herschel used to run all over Florida? Yes. Won all 3 of his years and 44-0 in his final season, ‘82…great days, long gone now.
October 29th, 20112:38 pm
I don’t agree that McCann was still hurt. He just hit the skids and couldn’t recover.
It’s ok. It happens.
Same with Wayward. I don’t buy the shoulder being to blame all yr long. He hit the skids, couldn’t get it together, fell on his face. Happened to Prado too.
So next yr? These guys can’t repeat such ineptitude or it will be a long yr, not just a long last 5 weeks when everyone basically tanked.
October 29th, 20112:46 pm
sorry phil – got to disagree about Mac. You could tell the oblique was still bothering him the way the ball sailed high and wide every time he threw it to second.
Now was Fredi wrong not spelling him with Ross more the final couple of weeks? You bet.
October 29th, 20112:47 pm
If I recall, Ross did not do well when Mac was out.
October 29th, 20113:04 pm
I see How DOB jumped on the Cardinals bandwagon saying they are desrved champs and I bet secretly he was cheering for them. THE TEAM THAT MADE IT OVER US.
No true Brave Should have been rooting for the Cardinals.
October 29th, 20113:05 pm
I was rooting for the Cardinals
October 29th, 20113:06 pm
Yeah, Ross only played like, twice in the last 3 weeks of the season. That irritated me.
October 29th, 20113:07 pm
I never root for the Cardinals. I’ve pretty much hated them since they didn’t beat the Astros in the 2005 NLCS…
October 29th, 20113:17 pm
I see How DOB jumped on the Cardinals bandwagon saying they are desrved champs and I bet secretly he was cheering for them. _ veer
You do realize DOB gets paid to do this, right?
October 29th, 20113:20 pm
Watching Terdoslavich take groundballs at third base today in BP, he really looks pretty solid there. Smooth fielder, good arm, no problems from just the limited amount I’ve seen.
October 29th, 20113:21 pm
Bat – Nah, veer is interested in nothing except his own idiocy and displaying it for all to see at all times. Seems DOB said something about St. Louis winning the series before it started, by virtue of having Carpenter and a very hot Pujols, but why would veer even notice that?
October 29th, 20113:22 pm
The 2011 GIBBYs…they shoulda included that game where some guy—can’t remember who it was—was getting the game off but then came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth down 1-0 and tied the game with a solo homer, then remained in the game and in the bottom of the 11th hit a walk-off two-run homer. That was pretty exciting, and I don’t think stuff like that happens very often…
October 29th, 20113:25 pm
McFann – Probably some Yankee or Red Sox player, wasn’t it? Certainly couldn’t have been a Braves’ catcher, could it?
October 29th, 20113:27 pm
CF prospect Todd Cunningham during BP today in Ariz. Fall League. He can hit, and provides flexibility ’cause he can legitimately play any OF position.
October 29th, 20113:28 pm
Lew Certainly couldn’t have been a Braves’ catcher, could it?
No, I don’t think so…’cause if it woulda been him, seems like it would be all over the place—on iTunes, commercials, everywhere…musta been a Yankee or Red Sock. They don’t get much attention outside their cities…
OK, this is hilarious!…
October 29th, 20113:29 pm
Start a write in campaign.
Yeah I guess veer wants to stay in crazy comment shape.
October 29th, 20113:31 pm
OK, that was the wrong link…here ya go:
October 29th, 20113:32 pm
Seems DOB said something about St. Louis winning the series before it started, by virtue of having Carpenter and a very hot Pujols, but why would veer even notice that? — Lew
But I was off by a game. I said Cardinals in six, and that Carpenter and Pujols would be the difference. Pujols was for one game, but Texas having no match for Carpenter in terms of a postseason ace was ultimately an even bigger factor.
October 29th, 20113:33 pm
Yeah, I should…and they’ve got our walk-off win from July 26th, but that game screwed up our whole season…
Glad we won, but I hated that game.
October 29th, 20113:41 pm
I shouldn’t say I hated it, but I wasn’t completely thrilled with it…
October 29th, 20113:48 pm
After working 5 innings Friday, Braves LH prospect Sean Gilmartin leads Ariz. Fall League with 21 innings and has five walks and 18 K’s, one off the AFL strikeout lead. He’s 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in five starts.
October 29th, 20114:13 pm
Wow, OF prospect Todd Cunningham just made terrific sliding catch in RF foul territory, covered a LOT of ground to get there.
October 29th, 20114:45 pm
Cunningham to AA ball this year, Efrim?
Steve from OH
October 29th, 20114:58 pm
Not Efrim, but I would think so…
