ncscoots, nice in the mountains, I know what you mean. But baseball… ah! I was a kid when the series was still being played in early October during the day, not under lights. That time of year almost assured good weather most anywhere across the nation. Day games meant warmer temps, too.

I get the game’s economics, but… if the series ever goes into November that’s just nuts. Perhaps the MLB could do what the NFL does with the Super Bowl… choose a host city based on good November climate or its stadium has some sort of cover!

Moylan came up with the Twins, but I think he was a FA the Braves signed. Made no deal with MIN to get him. Twins and Giants – can’t think of ay recent trades with either team. Of course I can’t remember a recent trade with Philly either, so I am not 100% sure.

TnBrian got one of the teams (Twins), but nobody was able to guess the Rockies.

August 19, 1998: The Colorado Rockies traded David Cortes to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later. The Atlanta Braves sent Anthony Briggs (minors) (September 8, 1998) to the Colorado Rockies to complete the trade.

September 5, 1997: The Minnesota Twins traded Greg Myers to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later. The Atlanta Braves sent Steve Hacker (minors) (December 18, 1997) to the Minnesota Twins to complete the trade.

Thanks to the ideas I read here from Murph (Chrome auto-refresh), and Bat Masterson (stats on potential cost to Robert), my math has me costing Robert $6,426.00 by the time his sponsorship ends on July 21.

Don’t think those pages work that way. That just means that it’ll cost the next person $6,426 to sponsor the page for the following year….unless nobody does, in which case it acts as a declining auction rate until someone pays for it.

The only thing any of the above candidates has on Pastornicky is experience. While that’s valuable, no doubt about it, I put more of a premium on ability.

This is based on a flimsy basic assumption that a prospect has nothing to gain from more seasoning in the minors. He has shown a few weeks worth of good numbers at AAA but his defense still needs work. How can you be so sure that he has that ability to make it in the bigs based on that? No harm in letting him face a different round of teams with the book on him to see how he adapts. Plenty of harm in exposing him too early to the majors and seeing him fail. (eg: Schafer).

Ha,ha. I couldn’t copy and paste it until I stopped the auto-refresh.

Due to a wiring mix-up during Game 5 of the World Series, the Cardinals bullpen phone was connected not to their dugout and manager Tony LaRussa, but to Bobby Cox’s cell phone. That explains the pitching changes they made

Your idea isnt foolproof either – you seem to want to bring every decent prospect up with minimal experience just because you saw a few good numbers. There are entire groups of people scouting these players through several levels who get to predict how these kids might react to ascending through the league – empirically. I’d hazard a guess that they know slightly better than most of us.
I am not saying that Pastor wont make it to the bigs this spring, but it’s not obvious either way to us.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7154152/draft-bonuses-last-big-issue-mlb-cba-talks

How about draft pick compensation? I think that’s more of a concern for the sport than the Rule IV draft itself. Take out Type B’s all together, I say. And eliminate ALL Type A free agents from netting a compensation selection in a Supplemental First Round. Good ideas from BA’s Jim Callis, although I’ve read others that have brought the ideas up. I hope they seriously consider that.

Murph

October 27th, 2011

you seem to want to bring every decent prospect up with minimal experience just because you saw a few good numbers.

Not true at all.

I’m comparing what I know about Pastornicky to what I know about the available FA SS’s out there and, of the realistic options, don’t see any of them giving the team a better chance to win.

Experience is great. I’m not trying to undervalue it. But knowing what to do in a specific situation while not being able to physically deliver on that doesn’t exactly help the team win games.

Well, the snow started here in town, now and they’re telling us we could have a couple of inches before midnight. I guess fall really is over. But it was nice while it lasted.

Snow tires put on yesterday and they just loaded the tank with 180 gallons of heating oil (first delivery). Winter has arrived. But it makes for great maple syrup.

Murph

October 27th, 2011
5:32 pm

How does your heating system work Lew? Where does the heating oil go, to a central furnace type thing? How long will 180 gallons last you?

Lew

October 27th, 2011
5:39 pm

Murph – There’s a huge tank in the basement that holds about 200 gallons and they usually put in 120-180 gallons three times (Nov., Jan., March). It’s connected to a furnace (new one five or six years ago)

We contract for a certain number of gallons (usually 500-600) and they give us a capped price (I think about $4 something this year). If the market price is less (it is now), then we get the lower price and can fill the tank with what’s left over in April or May. We pay 11 months out of the year – June – May.

Murph

October 27th, 2011

Wow Lew, that sounds pretty expensive. $2k for 500 gallons of oil… ouch.
