“If Fredi is still going to pull starters at five, he’s gonna have to ask Frankie-boy to do a HELLUVA LOT better than a George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink!”
It’s really a viscious circle that never really ended.
Starting pitchers weren’t efficient with their pitches. Thus they needed to be pulled after 5-6 innings too often.
Then on nights when they could have gone longer, due to the offense sucking, the pitchers needed to be PH for when there was run-scoring opportunities in the middle innings.
Kimbre, Venters and O’Flaherty suffered either way, because nobody else was reliable in the pen.
Due to those 3 factors happening (one or the other, sometimes two of them, and even sometimes all three of them), our “big-3″ in the pen were ridden hard and by the time August ended, they were gassed.
Saving the big 3 can be solved only if at least 2 of those things are resolved. As you stated though, simply finding 2 other reliable options in the pen could diminish the need to use them every night.
I look for the young pitchers in the rotation to step up and use fewer pitches. I look for Wren to find another bat, and the holdovers to provide more offense early in games (simply having Bourn all year should help early in the season), and I look for Medlen, Varvaro and maybe even Vizcaino to be the “better option” arms down in the pen.
Somehow gotta fix most of that or not only will the big-3 be gassed again at the end of next year, we might be looking at some serious arm troubles for a guy like Venters going into 2013. Dude has been WAY overused the past two years.
Linebrink-gone, Agon-gone Sherrill-gone,and Moylan-Gone.I see Fredi going with Vizzy bull-pen,and Melden the new comers……Lowe to be traded, or put on waivers. Just don’t see anyone paying that much money. Don’t think Lowe would be worth it in the bull-pen.

Now that’s a good idea. I’ll make the effort to ask people everyday. I wonder if it’s considered a hit every time I visit from the same computer during a day. I bet I could no 5000 in a day easy.
I’m luke-warm on the extra team in the playoffs. I don’t think it will ruin baseball as we know it, but it won’t improve anything either.
I hope they shorten spring training. However, there’s nothing to say that the manager can’t throw the minor leaguers out there for the first 1-2 weeks and let the big league team have an extra week of summer vacation.
So, it’s really a non-issue if the manager wants to make it so.
Braves will certainly make every effort to retain McCann through his career.
Prado is likely going to be gone a year before FA (if Braves trend continues).
Bourn will be a good fit for the Braves if his contract is not ludicrously over paid.
Braves may or may not extend Hudson; however, his performance in recent years justifies the expense. It would take a Lowe-vian fall off a cliff to make Huddy expendable at the end of his contract.
The weather is way too iffy in March for baseball and you can’t have all of the games in warmer weather cities or they won’t have any home games later in the season. So much for shorter spring training.
You won’t see the owners knocking games off of the schedule, either – way too much loss of revenue and since that’s what all of the expanded payroll talk is for – mo money – they won’t knock anything off of the bottom line.
McFann, I haven’t seen that one. Is it catchy? I’ll look it up… anything is better than this Subway song.
ab, my head injury has healed up pretty well. I’m glad I opted out of getting staples… turns out the superglue stuff they used worked really well. I think there’s a “consumer” version of the magic skin glue available at Walgreens… going to pick some up next time I’m there.
The only real after effect of my injury is everytime I see a donut I start to cry and pee my pants. i’m hoping that goes away really soon. It’s making breakfast at the office very, very awkward.
Sorry, meant to say – just some numbers I put together and what the players might want during that time period. All those years would potentially be in their decline phase though. We’ll see.
jeffrey d- What purpose would that serve if the goal of shortening ST is to finish the season earlier and start the playoffs so the season ends in October and not November?
Bat – Thing is that in October, you’re only dealing with a few teams and trying to get games played while in March you have to worry about 15 games getting played because of weather. Big difference between concerns for two or three games. And the weather is generally worse nation wide in March than October.
Mostly just BS-ing, though it would be nice if the season could be moved up a week or two. I don’t care for another playoff team, I didn’t like the wild card when it came out, and I don’t like 5 game series either.
Bat – I’m with you on the no extra playoff team. I’d just as soon do away with interleague play, the DH and go back to a balanced schedule. I just can’t see the need to fix what worked fine to begin with.
Bat – Yeah – MY wife is in Orlando on a business trip/visit to my son. She’s staying over at Cocoa Beach with the intent of hitting the beach. Doesn’t look like she’s going to get much fun out of it though, with the forecast of low temps and rain.
Lew, I think we’re suppose to hit a high of 65 today. Had a cold front move through last night, lots of rain, thunder, lightning and wind. We were at 90 yesterday for a high. And they always wonder why we’re sick in this part of the country.
I just ordered a set of wireless headphones for the PS3… official Sony product, simulated surround sound, etc. Can’t wait. Now I can play Grand Theft Auto with mini-Murph in the next room without worrying about her picking up any new words.
Transplant – Yep, radical temperature swings are no fun. See plenty of them up here, but with lower temps. IN a week in late September, we went from 82 to 26 and back to 68..
It costs $1.25 per 1000 page views for Robert to sponsor that page…
I’d imagine if each of us posted the link to FB, set it as our home page, and went to it 10 times per day we could at least make it harder for him to go get all-you-can-eat at Sizzler this Friday night.
Would not be surprised to see the Braves wait to extend McCann’s contract given his recent offensive performance and defensive short comings especially if CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT continues to progress on both fronts.
Posting links to FB doesn’t work all that well… people are worried about getting hacked. Make sure you add a personal message and then have one of your friends comment on your post. People are way more apt to click on the link once they see that it’s not a hack.
Tell everyone you’re raising money for the Robert B Memorial Fund, that the more page visits you get the more money you’ll raise, and ask people to click on it 10 times per day.

Aw, that’s kinda mean to the people that click on it…
Yeah, just ’cause the dude is hitting well in the AFL doesn’t mean he’s ready. And anyway, did he just turn 20 last month? Still young…And I seem to remember reading (as Lew just alluded to) that he doesn’t have much of a bat…
Christian Bethancourt cracked a home run last night and Sean Gilmartin pitched 4 inning of 2 hit ball with 4 strikeouts and no walks in the AFL game last night.

Ok then – tell them it is to help a mad man get his treatment.

He hasn’t really hit at the minor league level yet, so let’s hold off on making him the heir apparent to McCann. Also, he’ll play all of next season as a 20 year old in Lynchburg. You could give that kid a full 3-4 more seasons at the minor league level. Maybe he’ll learn to hit in that timeframe.
Working on a little World Series preview, and it really is amazing how bad the starting pitching has been for these teams this postseason….

Bat – Thing is that in October, you’re only dealing with a few teams and trying to get games played while in March you have to worry about 15 games getting played because of weather. Big difference between concerns for two or three games. And the weather is generally worse nation wide in March than October.
