I remember Dave Magadan’s incredible year at The University of Alabama. The article is about his election to the College Baseball HOF, last year. It would be nice to see him come back to the South as the Brave’s Hitting Coach.
I understand Terdoslavich and La Stella had big years, but neither player has very much defensive ability and Joey T was a 22 year old in the Carolina League, which is kinda old. I’d rank Salcedo over both of em based on ceiling.
I’m not all that familiar with LaStella. numbers looked promising.
Nothing I’ve read about Terd from outside the Braves org paints him as a real hot prospect

I have a Prado question – not trying to trade him just curious about something. His offense is about average for LF (is that right I’m not sure) but above average at 2B. For the $5M he will likely make in 2012 wouldn’t he be a better value as someone else’s 2B as opposed to our LF?
If you leave now you can be here by tomorrow night and VJ is working late again…and there is a municipal airport literally 3 minutes from my house that I bet you could use…a lot closer than Santa Monica
I’m not all that familiar with LaStella. numbers looked promising.

I think at this point you hafta give Prado the benefit of the doubt and assume that if you want an upgrade you need to find a LFer who will hit 850-ish and cost less. Can we do that?
I would like to see a package where we bundle some money with Derek Lowe to Texas for Michael Young, the last 2 years on his contract, and an extension. I think at this point you hafta give Prado the benefit of the doubt and assume that if you want an upgrade you need to find a LFer who will hit 850-ish and cost less. Can we do that?
I don’t think so, which is why he should stay and get reg. at bats in LF. The bench needs to be deepened and the starters have to get healthy. If Wren can unload Derek, then great. Quiet offseason, imo. More quiet then it’s been in years.
Young can no longer play short adequately on a daily basis. He hasn’t played short since 2008 and was ranked near the bottom for several years b4 that.
You know who looks like he might become a 4th outfielder – Mycal Jones. Be nice if he can get better with the glove. Came out of nowhere and increased his walk rate this year. Will be 25 years old in May of next year. Part of the “funny” bad 2009 draft.
With all dues respect to Brian McCann, and all the female Javy Lopez lovers out there, Javy and Brian are not ‘Druw & Chip in their prime (’cept for Javy’s “monster” walk year – PED’s anyone?).

Why do you want a quiet off season.
This team went 0 – 9 in the last month of the season against Philly and St Louis. We also lost the home series against St Louis earlier and have been killed by them the last 2 years. We have lost 11 out of 12 against Philly over the last 2 years in the last 2 series f the year. I think people on the blog think the team is a lot better than it really is.
If Fredi is still going to pull starters at five, he’s gonna have to ask Frankie-boy to do a HELLUVA LOT better than a George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink!

nolie – he has 82 through 2 seasons 47 last year in only 119 games that is 51 if he plays 130 games (is that too many to project?) so not far off single season pace and if he has 1 1/2 left in the minors I think career is a lock.
I still caint get over the fact that Robert is paying to sponsor the Bobby Cox page @ BaseballReference just so he can put nasty remarks on it. How sad is that??? _ nolie

I would think that $5 million and Lowe to Texas would entice them. Young has 2 more years left on his current deal and Texas wants to sign a top tier pitcher. That would free them up. Worst case scenario, they would work out a settlement with Lowe that would probably be near $7 million. Win – Win scenario. And I would take Young’s overall body of work at short with or without the range issues at Short.
Chuck Knobloch was a rookie in the 91 World Series and Lonnie Smith was a 13 year veteran. It might have been a little easier to take if it were the other way around.
For anyone wondering about Jurrjens (knee) or Hanson (shoulder), agent Scott Boras told me neither needs surgery, ’scope or otherwise, this winter. Which is what we expected, what team indicated, but just checked with him to make sure.
Thought of Murph tonight coming home from a late-night meeting. There were deer everywhere. Mostly they hung on the edge of the road staring ominously at me. Then, when I thought I was safe and long past the point where there could be any more, one was standing in the middle of the road glaring at me. I skidded on my brakes. It just gave me a warning look before trotting off. Very scary.
My brother hit a dear at our cabin a few years ago. It was standing in the middle of the road, much like yours, Moe. Only problem was it was around a curve and there was no way he could stop in time. But the thing bounced off his car, shook it off and ran into the woods. More damage to his car than the deer…
And I would take Young’s overall body of work at short with or without the range issues at Short
really? from 2005 -2008 he was ranked in the bottom 5 and has not played there since. With the lack of range of the other infielders that we have inserting Young would likely cause a new MLB record to be set for ground balls through the infield. I’ll pass and I’m sure the Braves would too at short.
cab–I had a friend who ran into one and totalled his car. The cops helping him asked if he wanted the meat. My friend declined and then the cop asked if he minded if he helped himself to it.
Bat–They were looking very bold. I worry about my drive to work in the morning. Think they might be hanging out and waiting for me.
Sorry, but that’s kinda funny…my uncle did the same thing on the same road as my brother- totaled his car, but again, didn’t manage to kill the deer. Guess we grow them a little hardier out here
More than Justice? Nope.
More than Gant? Nope.
And imo, not more than Nixon.
Murphy hadn’t played much CF since 1989. He was a RF. Gant, nor Justice was a very good CF either.
When JS came on board, his MAIN task was to improve defense, especially up the middle, so our young pitchers could pitch to contact and not be afraid to do so. Otis Nixon provided stellar defense in CF.
So, even with Murphy 18 HR and his .724 OPS that year (which would seem like an act of god in our OF these days), I think an outfield of Gant, Nixon and Justice did more than an outfield that would have had Murphy replacing any one of those guys.
Besides, Murphy’s decline was pretty evident starting in the 2nd half of 91. After the break he went:
A Biology teacher at my Brother’s school will get dead animals off the side of the road for study—I think he has some kind of permit for that or something…He hit a deer once and brought some of it to class. My Brother got to feel the heart, and the lungs, and other stuff…
And Jim Schwartz needs to look at his own actions (including in that game) and stop acting like he’s such a saint. Harbaugh wasn’t the one that ran 40 yards to chase after another coach
2 playoff teams in the NL got better hitting wise(Cards, DBacks) than in 2010 and the other 2 teams hitting dropped(the Phillies and Brewers)but their pitching significantly improved. The DBacks were the only team that got better in both run scoring and allowing fewer runs. Braves hitting digressed tremendously and pitching improved barely. Braves have to get much better offensively. They need to improve scoring by at least .4 runs per game. A pretty tall order when you’re hoping 3 of your everyday cogs have bounce back years and you’re also hoping a 4th cog doesn’t get injured falling on a ground ball. Not to mention your 2 starting pitchers who were sidelined with injuries. Then there is the mental aspect of how the “great fold” will affect them as a team. I guess I’m still suffering from PTS, hopefully a FW trade or 2 will heal my wounded spirit.
Red Sox owner John Henry “threw $60MM into the air,” by making it clear that he views the Carl Crawford signing as a mistake, according to one baseball person. Henry said on the airwaves of 98.5 the Sports Hub that he was not in favor of signing the left fielder for $142MM.

I’ll pass and I’m sure the Braves would too at short.

one was standing in the middle of the road glaring at me. I skidded on my brakes. It just gave me a warning look before trotting off. Very scary.

Michael Young played SS in following no. of games since 2009-
2011 – 1 DH – 69
2010 – 2 3B – 155
2009 – 0 3B – 134
How do we know his fielding will be good enough for 16 mil per over next 2 years?

cab–I had a friend who ran into one and totalled his car. The cops helping him asked if he wanted the meat. My friend declined and then the cop asked if he minded if he helped himself to it.
Bat–They were looking very bold. I worry about my drive to work in the morning. Think they might be hanging out and waiting for me.

Sure Murphy might have had an impact.
After the break he went:
.240/.301/.384/.685 with 6 HR.
You asked. I answered.

Yeh, it was quite traumatic, don’t you think, the way they just quit playing. No seriously, just being a little dramatic for emphasis sake.

Hmmm. First shot at Theo by the Sox?
Red Sox owner John Henry “threw $60MM into the air,” by making it clear that he views the Carl Crawford signing as a mistake, according to one baseball person. Henry said on the airwaves of 98.5 the Sports Hub that he was not in favor of signing the left fielder for $142MM.
