Good morning y’ll
I can live without the NBA. Without it, it would be nice if FSS and SPORTSOUTH would televise some winter league baseball from the Islands and Mexico. FOX SPORTSWORLD did televise the playoffs from the Islands one year. On another note PLEASE no more teams in playoffs, it is fine just the way it is. Baseball should not become the NBA.

Murph, haven’t done much but play black ops lately. Just prestiged up again this weekend.. wasn’t going to but thought oh well since the new MW3 is due out soon and black ops will hit the shelf then. Those headphones sound like a great idea, do they have a built in bluetooth headset as well? Sounds like something I might need to look into myself.

So, how’s the job coming long these days? Anything new on the horizon?

It went pretty much unnoticed outside of K.C., but the Royals promoted Chino Cadahia to bench coach for 2012 right after the ‘11 season ended. The ex-Braves bench coach (2007-2010) went to the Royals a year ago as a special assistant in player development.

DOB:

What is your take on the post yesterday about the Braves’ budget? The basic gist was that despite a considerable amount of payroll coming off the team (goodbye McLouth & KK), with the expected raises of the rest of the players and the addition of Bourn, the Braves were essentially even and had next to no payroll flexibility. Is that the way you see it?

AT, I was wondering about the bluetooth as well. Not sure why they decided to not go that route… maybe they have a limited number of items that can connect to the PS3 via Bluetooth and didn’t want the headphones creating an issue? I completely forgot that the Braves played 5 one run games vs. the Indians in 1995.

Also, looking over the last decade, the last good World Series was in 2002, in my opinion. I suppose 2009 was okay…..but truthfully, every game in that Angels/Giants World Series was pretty damn good.

Shaun

Hard to believe the Yankees led the American League in ERA+, were 3rd in fewest runs allowed per game, 3rd in fewest runs allowed, 4th in lowest ERA. This from a team whose only consistently great starter was CC Sabathia.

Here’s a theory: Perhaps no one noticed how weak pitching was this season (at least in terms of pitching depth on any given staff) because offense was so weak across the board. Pitching seemed better than it was because of the offensive environment but the weakness of the pitching showed up in the postseason, when pitching staffs had to face the best offenses.

This postseason hasn’t featured an all-pitching, no-hitting team like the Giants of last season. Every team in the postseason this year was above their leagues’ averages in OPS+. I need to go back and look but I can’t think of a year in which all the playoff teams were in the top half in their league in OPS+.

In the American League, the four playoff teams were in the top 5 in OPS+. In the National League, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Arizona were all in the top four and Philadelphia was tied for 6th, mediocre but still in the top half of the NL.

Well that’s something. What really matters is that a number of people here were willing to go to extreme measures to hit Robert in his wallet as hard as possible. That speaks well for the blog’s character, if you ask me.

Consensus seems to be Rangers in 5 or 6 games. Consensus is wrong.

“also, why do you think the big three were “gassed” by the end of august?” DAP

Actually O’flaherty seemed fine. But the command for Kimbrel and Venters just wasn’t there. Not as many swings and misses. Harder hit balls, etc…

Could have just been good advanced scouting and good approaches by hitters too. But both of them missed spots badly down the stretch. To me that’s just a sign of being tired. I could be wrong though. :-)

DOB, I’m just finishing up on Season 3 of “Always Sunny…”, to me it’s the best comedy of all time (I know that gets thrown around a lot – but I like it that much). I was just telling a buddy of mine that isn’t sold on it, that I like it better than Arrested Development, which to me when I watched all of those on DVD, I thought it wouldn’t be topped in my list of favorites anytime soon. Sunny is just so over the top and so politically uncorrect, yet kind of believable in a fiction kind of way. Where Arrested Development was more SNL skit over the top.

Both very well writen and unique in their own way.

Which do you prefer if you had to choose (which of course you don’t)?

DOB, I just don’t think the Cardinals pitchers outside of Carpenter can match-up with Texas’ lineup depth. But the Cardinals did handle a decent Milwaukee lineup. Speaking of bench coaches, is Carlos Tosca still breathing? Did he never have occasion to say, “Fredo, maybe what you are about to do…well, there’s another option.” Or does Fredo not utilize his bench coach that way, maybe? So looking at Nelson Cruz, Mike Morse, and a few good years of Jack Cust, I realize teams need to stop giving up on prospects with high power potential before Age 30. Then I think about Andy Marte and cry.

Jerry Crasnick (1:43 PM)

Steve, It’s also worth noting that Jayson Werth blossomed in Philly after stops in Baltimore and LA, and Jose Bautista broke out in Toronto in his late 20s. Sometimes all it takes is the proverbial “change of scenery” and a team to have some faith in a guy. You can usually chalk that up to a really smart scout or two advocating for a certain player.

Enough of this boring World Series stuff. How do we fix ATL’s offense? Is it just hope for Heyward to return to form or are serious changes needed? You’d thing a core of Bourn, McCann, Uggla, Heyward, Freeman with players like Prado and Chipper should be enough.

Jerry Crasnick (2:01 PM)

Adam, I’ve talked to some baseball people who think the Braves have to start looking beyond Chipper and find another middle of the order bat who’s going to be good for more than 120 games, 18 homers and 75 RBIs a season. But the pieces are there for that club to be better next season. 2011 First half: .226/.315/.404(260 PA’s)
2011 Second half: .229/.325/.367(194 PA’s)

That’s funny, because about two weeks ago it was either Tim Kurkjian or Buster Olney had a bit (Maybe Jayson Stark) about how over the last two seasons Adams has had the most 1-2-3 innings amongst qualifying relievers.

I guess, but he seems like a guy that was helped out by Petco. Still a really good reliever. But not the dominant guy that people try to feed you.

Hmmm…Michael Cuddyer anyone???? That puts Prado as UT guy for OF and for Chip. IF Heyward stinks then Prado plays OF full time!

I actually care about the NFL season and are not just looking forward to the draft in April

Truth be known, I’ve gone commie on the NFL, too, LOL. I haven’t really followed pro football in years. Totally un-American.

Cuddyer is probably getting a three year deal of some sort that pays him around 10 million per year. I think the Braves will shoot lower for their 4th outfielder/utility infielder type.

Hello my friends! How about a Ryan Ludwick in left. That would be interesting?

Still, I guess one has to be open to the possibility that they replace Chipper’s bat a year early. You know, get the guy who can semi-replace Chipper’s performance next year. If they can do that this year, instead of next, I think Prado would be OK with a utility spot for a year.

I don’t have any sense that such a thing is in the plans, but it’s possible, I guess.

My guess, and unfortunately I’m being serious, is that the Braves end up signing either Marcus Thames or Scott Hairston… guys with a little athleticism yet fall short on the tools side o’ things.
