Heyward’s latest MRI shows no issues with spine

Braves right fielder Jason Heyward had an MRI that ruled out any issues with his cervical spine, and he will be placed on a “maintenance and stretching program” to strengthen his right shoulder, the team said. No surgery is required.

Heyward spent 3-1/2 weeks on the disabled list in May and June for rotator-cuff inflammation in his right shoulder, which bothered him beginning late in spring training. He has had two MRI exams  on the shoulder which showed no structural damage.

Heyward had the most recent MRI Thursday to see if there was anything spinal-related that was causing lingering soreness in the back of his shoulder, in order to give him peace of mind entering the offseason before he begins his workout regimen.

The NL rookie of the year runner-up in 2010, Heyward struggled in his second season and spent time on the bench in August. He hit .227 with 34 extra-base hits, 42 RBIs and a .319 on-base percentage in 128 games, down from .277 with 52 extra-base hits, 72 RBIs and a .393 OBP in 142 games as a rookie.

Braves general manager Frank Wren said two days after the season ended that Heyward would not be guaranteed a starting job next spring.

“He’s going to be in a battle unless he continues to progress at a good rate,” Wren said at that time, noting that Heyward made progress working on the adjustments the Braves asked him to make in his swing in the season’s final two months.

“He’s going to be in a battle for a position. It’s not a given he’s our right fielder. We’re going to go into the offseason planning with it in mind that we’ve got to have offensive production from right field. And we didn’t get that.”

It’s great watching our Braves competing for a WS; unfortunately they are wearing a Rangers uniform. Where would the Rangers be without John S and his “I want to cement my legacy” trade?

The fact that Heyward felt it necessary to have another MRI on his shoulder sort of confirms my suspicions that the shoulder was bothering him during the second half of the season as well.

I noticed the overhand loop in his swing all season. That would tell me the the shoulder of his front hand was not allowing him to swing level through the ball.

I hope he can put this issue behind him and give the Braves the production that he’s been projected in the future.

Despite what many here on the blogs have stated, I still think Heyward is a keeper.

I’ve known HS and college players who were told by orthopedic surgeons to eliminate the head first slide after shoulder dislocations. Heyward injured his shoulder in each of his MLB seasons by sliding head first. He really needs to stop the practice. His shoulders won’t hold up, and his healthy presence is more important than the occasional head first slide.

sure wish chipper would give up his “career”(whatever he thinks is left of it) just like he does when he goes to the dl for any little injury. he sucked on both sides of the ball last year, this year, and soon to be…next year. also if every braves fan forgot he is the one who rushed heyward back by acting like he knew how to manage injuries and get back healthy. especially when we did have a huge lead and were getting production-a-plenty out of constanza. chipper you were the reason i kept liking the braves even after they left tbs but really man, you’re going to drag out your career like this. still my favorite but seriously help the braves, retire and make some deal with him to pay him the rest of his money spread out over the next few years and help the organization that way.

“Still my favorite”? When I read that I had to stop and read it again to make sure I actually read it correctly.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but it seems pretty obvious whom your favorite is from this rant.

By the way, Heyward’s DL stint — and Chipper’s comment — came before Constanza was even on the team.

Chipper still contributes a lot to the team and HIS salary isn’t anywhere near as big a deal as OTHER contracts that we’re either getting shut of this off-season, stuck with for another year, or buying the last year out, so stop going off on the guy!

If you wanna be blunt about the comments Chipper made about Heyward not playing with a “sore” shoulder: A 22 year old with an athletic body is a wuss if he can’t play baseball with some shoulder soreness. Somebody needed to say it, and I think the MRI was just a way of getting out of some of the criticism. We all knew they weren’t gonna find anything. I think Heyward’s lousy year is symptomatic of a stubborn young man who wouldn’t listen to coaching and work on correcting flaws in his swing that were magnified by the fact that the second time around, THERE WAS A SCOUTING REPORT ON HIM!

What is he singling him out? I hope it’s for nothing but offseason motivation … because he could have easily pointed at the extended lack of production from SS, LF, C, and 2nd base (although 2nd is unwarranted after the all-star break)

LF was in the same position as RF … never the same after an injury.

SS can’t hit and was a guaranteed double play with runners on ..

C was the same as LF and RF post injury … but he’s singling out RF. I’m just thinking it’s to motivate the guy.

bravesfansince80s

October 11th, 2011

correction: the original medical tests run earlier in the year did find a small amount of inflammation in the shoulder. anybody who swings a baseball bat as much as an MLB player SHOULD have a little inflammation in their shoulders, especially early in the year, it’s an unnatural action for the body, ever wonder why pitchers’ arms fall off after so many years of doing a very unnatural act with it for so long?

bravesfansince80s

the point that Lobosolo seemed to miss is this: send Heyward to work with a block foundation laying crew for a few weeks and then ask him how his shoulder feels. guarantee you there are TONS of hard-working blue collar guys all across this nation of ours who would gladly swing a baseball bat with a tight shoulder for the kind of money that MLB players make even at the league minimum. now if the injury were severe enough to actually find it in testing and dr’s were able to diagnose a real problem, I’m all for letting the guy take as much time as he needs to get the problem fixed and get back into action. but until I see a real injury, I’m calling “wuss” on this one!

Jason is indeed one of the reason why I contiune to watch the Braves. But people continue to ask why he’s been singled out instead of the other. Well its simple he is the “other” as in race. Jason is a black male were many blacks live in ATL. He would be a reason more blacks would come to a game. But being treated like this in the south by fools who knows nothing about the game is killing me. He and M. Bourn are the only blacks on the team, thank God Wren is not trading him. It was obvious his shoulder was hurting, and he is still a francise guy, so why killin him after one bad year. I know he will bounce back and when he does dont be a cowboy tring to jump on his back then.

Heyward has another MRI (that makes three) on his shoulder for a boost to his confidence. He thinks it might be spinal. What the hell he is just 21 and he needs reassurance about his body and most of all his spine. I smell hypochondriac. The more I hear the worse I feel about him. Hopefully I am wrong. Please God let me be my usual dumbass self since I am still not over the debacle in September but i am cautiously optimistic.

nashvillewill

October 11th, 2011

Heyward has a lot to work on, mechanically: his swing is too top-hand, his stance is set too far from the plate, his trigger mechanism timing is off, his ready position is arriving too late. At least he doesn’t dive in like Freeman, who also needs to work some in the off season or he will be in Heyward’s position after HIS first year. Also, Prado looked terrible after his injury, McCann was awful after his DL, and Uggla had one good month out of six. Braves MUST find help in OF, SS, and a new bench. A veteran pitcher to replace DLowe at 1/3 the salary would not hurt. Hopefully, with bullpen rookies next year Venters and Kimbrel won’t pitch in half the games played. 60 appearances is enough.
By the way, FIRE FG. His (mis)management of the team is apparent.

Heyward has been singled out here because he’s the only one out of SEVERAL braves everyday players who had lousy years that is trying to blame it on a mysterious, undiagnosable shoulder injury. I can’t believe the race card was pulled here, baseball fans don’t see the color of an athlete’s skin as a defining characteristic, that’s ridiculous and small in scope. Some of my all-time favorite Braves are African-American, just ridiculous, please, the race card?

I say fire Parrish first of all tell Chipper to go home and let us build around McCann Heyward and Freeman, Trade Hanson becuase I have a feeling hes gonna be the Chipper Jones of the rotation. Send Lowe to NYY thats the only team i see him being traded too. Trade Hanson and Prado to Fla for Bonfiacio make him our 3B resign Wilson and use him and Pastornicky at SS and maybe trade for a LF like Rowand from SF or have Richardson Constanza and Gartretll fight for the job in Spring Training.

Ban the head first slide for the whole team. Whenever someone does it in a game, immediately remove them and fine them. That being said, I disagree with the stupid analogy used by announcers about you never see a head first slide at the end of the 100 meter dash. The track is paved. A head first slide on a paved surface will result in some serious road rash. A head first slide in dirt will result in a dirty uniform and mabe a skinned elbow. You will get to the base faster head first but it is not worth the injury risk.

Here is a news flash for some of you Heyward lovers. Just because the guy can’t swing doesn’t mean his shoulder hurts. He picked up some bad habits somewhere along the line while reading blogs about how good he was and hasn’t been able to or is incapable of breaking these habits. Now his little feelings are hurt because for the First time in his life he is Not being told how great he is. This puts him at a very important cross road. He can pout and act like a child and feel sorry for himself or he can drop a set, work hard, put it behind him and be the player we want him to be. This is a very important offseason for for the J-Hey kid.

Glad Heyward is going to be ok. Trade him while he still has significant value. Fire the whole coaching staff. Keep all pitchers except Lowe. Consider every other player for trade in order to get some bats in this lineup. Look at the Texas Rangers hitters and you will see a hitting lineup. Our people do not begin to compare. Face it, we need big changes if we are going to be more than a “pretty good” team.

Heyward has an abnormally low amount of cartilage between each vertebrae in his back. His first set of MRIs revealed that.

Every year and more so if he bulks up will make that condition a source of pain and DL time. In other words he is destined to have back issues his as he ages.

While I like him and feel 2011 was an aberration of sorts I say trade him before the realities of his back come to pass.

He once would have commanded the moon in a trade not today. He does have enough juice re: trade value to land a impact player especially if people thing it was poor coaching/management that put him in this mess in the first place.

I would trade him in a package for Kemp :) if such a deal could be arranged. Fantasy I know….

James- so the BRaves are racist?? 2/3 of their roster is Hispanic. There is way too much money to be made and too many jobs on the line to be a racist in professional sports. Chipper was drafted by the Braves and has put up HOF numbers. Getting a girl pregnant is not against the law. He’s restructured contracts to free up money and if my memory serves me correct has never been arrested, been a discipline issue, or a locker room distraction in his 15 years with the ogranization.

Guys that either bring baggage with them or create baggage become expendable even if they are producing. Just because a guy comes in and produces for 2-3 years (whether he’s black or not) doesn’t guarentee him a long term contract with that team. In many cases, guys who are high maintenance, locker room distraction types usually bounce around every couple of years and are used as trade bait.

How ironic for braveschoke to use that name considering they are known throughout the league as being the biggest under achievers (especially given the bloated salary) and worst closers down the stretch year in, year out for the past decade. LOL Hey bravesfansince80s, eat another bowl of pasta!

Wow, bravescrybabysincewashingoutofeverything,.. you seem to get stupider and stupider as the day wears on… whether you are in the middle of one of your perpetual blubbers or in another of your perpetual blathers about things you have no clue about, you’re just plain old D-U-M-B… even your Hank Williams statement was stupid as it gets… go back to night school, Man… it’s never too late to gain some semblance of lucidity… and you, Really? where did you scour up your information? Sounds like you think you share the other whiners’ ability to diagnose things from the seat of your armchair…. DO you idiots ever stop to read yourselves? It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad… God help your young’uns… SMH…..
