That would be a huge injury. You also have to think about Chase Utley as well. He’s been getting hurt for the past few seasons on and off. Also both players numbers have shown a gradual decline over the last few years.

The Phillies are old and stuck with some big contracts that will limmit their desperation moves in the off season. If Hunter Pence is the Phil’s savior, they are in deep trouble.

I sincerely hope he’s not hurt, but if I’m a Phil’s fan, Howard’s ritual of spitting into his hands like he’s about to do something productive has got to be getting old.

The Phillies spit the bit again. Local papers saying they had the greatest rotation ever. I guess they forget Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and any combination of Avery, Neagle, and Millwood. I’d stack that against the Phils four any day.

I remember that smug look on Charlie Manuel’s face as his Pholding Phils erased any hope of the Braves making the playoffs in game 162 (actually, the Braves hitters did most of the erasing). He had a different look (must have just filled his Depends)in the ninth inning last night as the heart of his order looked remarkably similar to the Braves hitters. What goes around comes around!

Saying the Phil have the greatest rotation in baseball history, is like saying Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez are the best looking men to ever play the game.

Fresh off the Philadelphia Inquirer sports page: “If this five-year run comes to represent a bell curve for the success of perhaps the bestsustained team in Phillies history — a run book-ended by losses in the opening round — then the Phillies, far from establishing a dynasty here, will be more remembered by history as a shortened example of the Atlanta teams that won 14 straight division titles. The Braves won the NL East from 1995 to 2005, with three West titles immediately preceding that streak, and advanced to the World Series five times from 1991 to ’99, but only won a single championship.”

Even the Philly sportswriters are confirming this fact: The Phils are nothing more than “The Poor Man’s Braves.”

What a wonderful day to be a baseball fan! My two most hated teams, the Yankees and the Phillies were knocked out of the playoffs! Life is good. Now, if only those pesky Cardinals can be taken out by the Brewers, I’ll be ecstatic. Don’t really care much about who wins between the Rangers and Tigers.

Here’s some more about Howard. Just keep in mind that although he has been great, he’s an overweight, unconditioned athlete past his prime. Can you imagine what 5 years @ $25 per would do to the Braves? Well, we’ve got a similar decision to make next year.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Now, to make matters worse, the man who is set to begin a five-year, $125 million deal in 2012, likely has an achillies tendon tear, an injury that could cost him six months or more. Howard will have an MRI to figure out the extent of the damage.

If the news is true – and it likely is since he said it following the game – the second guessers will have a field day. Is this what Howard gets for signing his name on that lucrative deal last season? It seems like it’s been nothing but a slippery downhill slope since that time.

If you look at the numbers, it’s been a spiral for Howard over the past few seasons. His power numbers have declined, his OPS has sunk like a brick, and his health has suffered. Ahead lies a major setback far worse than his mechanically-wrecked swing; one that will only add fuel to the fire that has been set around him. In my head, I picture Howard running from an angry mob wearing red pinstripes. Except he’s slowly fading. And at the end, he breaks down and succumbs to the mass of humanity. The weight of the world has finally collapsed on Ryan Howard.

I sure hope the Pastornicky bandwagon doesn’t get overloaded this winter. He is a prospect, but nothing else. Some scouts think he will be a SS, some scouts think he will be a 2B and some think he’s a utility man. His glove has to come around – he had 26 errors in 119 games vs. AGon’s 12 in about 145.

You just can’t go into the season without a proven SS and I think it will be AGon.

I think next year something I would like like see the Braves do is sign some of the nicest and unemotional players they can. I think they should make it priority 1 that they all enjoy each others company and that they eat dinner together at least 6 days a week. I’m really not to interested in there record next year as I am more worried about there clubhouse chemisty because believe it or not that is why i watch baseball, The Brew Crew are really going to regret signing a guy like Nyjer Morgan. Lew – I didn’t mean that the contract had to be for $25M a year but something in the Lowe range. $15 Million Braves dollars would likely be worth about $25 Phillies dollars. Seems we have a starter with some of Howard’s characteristics that has team options of $8.5 for 2012 and $12 for 2013. The Braves will be looking to extend that contract before it expires.

I’m asking would you like to have McCann to have a 5 year $75M contract from 2014 to 2019?

Before the season began this was suppose to be a rotation for the ages, compared to a lot of the braves rotations from the 90’s. Don’t know the final stats and how they stacked up but i’m guessing very similar to some of ours from the 90’s. Felt the phillies were a shoe-in for a playoff spot with a rotation like that but didn’t believe they were any closer to another world series because their offense was lacking and that’s were I felt they needed the most improvement instead of signing Lee. Was called a homer for not believing they were an unstoppable force. I guess I was being a little “homerific”, I mean us braves fans should know better than anyone else that this was not necessarily a formula that equaled up to World Series wins, regular season dominance likely, just no sure thing in the postseason.

Love it! Also, besides lowe and huddy….all of our pitchers are in their 20’s…that is a very good thing for the braves. I think subtracting wilson (sucks), gonzalez (even though he did a little better at the end still sucked it up all season and is old), and probably hinske and conrad…the age average goes way down. Hopefully the braves can get a good shortstop…why they didnt go after furcal is beyond me. Yes this season stung, but I am already looking forward to next season…GO BRAVES!!

Man, it looks like the Phillies fans are starting to realize that winning World Series with constant Division Titles aren’t as easy as they once thought and are realizing why we were happy, even with 14 straight titles and one championship after it was all said and done.

It’s a shame they lost, but it was great game and they had a great season. Frankly, if you can’t appreciate that, you really shouldn’t be a fan of this team, which has won a WS and five straight Division titles. Maybe we’ve all gotten a little too greedy as fans…the only reasons the Red Sox won their second WS in ‘07 was because they cheated (hello, Manny!) and the Cleveland Indians, the saddest of the sad sacks, blew a 3-1 lead in the Championship series. Here’s hoping Howard’s injury isn’t as serious as feared and the Phils come back strong for next season.

I realize that the game of baseball is probably more about tradition and playing for the “long run” than any other sport, but the Phils-Cards series just brings into question how much managing by an organization is acceptable in trying to succeed in achieving the ultimate goal of a world championship.

I contend that a team or an organization should be able to do anything they deem necessary to win it all within the rules, tradition be damned!

In hindsight, the Phillies have to be wondering how smart it was not to lay down and let the Braves win that last series. The Cards were obviously one of the few teams that could actually stand in the way of the Phils going to the World Series.

The Braves were actually pathetic in September and were at their absolute worst the last week of the season.

NOTE TO ANY TEAM VYING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP FROM HERE FORWARD!

Screw tradition. If you can keep a team that is dangerous to your chances of advancing out of the playoffs by losing a couple of games to a struggling team, then do it! lol

Philly not looking so smart by sweeping the Braves now.

There are definitely drawbacks to being a mid market team but an advantage for me is that it keeps us from going off the deep end on contracts. For as disappointing as Lowe has been its only a 4 year contract and it doesn’t reach into the 20 million range. Got to have a good gm that gets the balance between veteran contracts and young talent and I think that’s what we have in Wren.

Luke Warm

By the way, when I suggested the Phils lay down, it’s no different than last place teams in the NFL or NBA laying down to get a top draft pick! Reporters and media types who cover the NFL and NBA routinely speak of the wisdom ot tanking to help yourself going forward.

Lew

Trey – I feel the same way, but I’d like to see that contract make it difficult to impossible to sign a needed piece of the puzzle for them and that they get no insurance to ease their pain.

I still think that their ownership has that salary schedule on a short and shortening leash. I think that their $174 million isn’t going to see that level again given their results and that the fans will quit selling the stadium out if this trend continues for them.

Also, I’ m glad that they’re seeing how difficult it is to keep winning those division titles and go one and out in the playoffs and never even sniff the World Series..

Let me spell it out to you. Braves sweep Phils. no Cards in playoffs. No Cards in playoffs. Phils headline doesn’t say Phils lose to Cards this morning!

The phillies needed to handle their own business, they did against us and didn’t against the Cards. They swept the braves in a three game series in September at the bank but lost 3 out of 4 to the Cards at the bank. Had they won that series we would be in the playoffs. No team is ever going to lay down for another team but the phils had a chance to put a damper on the Cards playoff hopes themselves and didn’t. That’s where they blew it for themselves, not when they swept the braves at Turner Field but when they didn’t squash the hopes of the Cards by beating them at the place where they were having so much success, Citizen’s Bank Park.

Lew

October 8th, 2011

Trey – Even if he DID tear his Achilles’ tendon, the recovery time is six to nine months. That would put him back at June in the worst case scenario. Even if insurance paid half of Howard’s salary, they’d still be out of pocket for $12.5 mil on it and another $30 mil on Pujols (because that’s about what it will take for them to actually sign Albert).

They don’t have $42 mil – much less $55 mil to pay for one position when they need to fill three other full time positions and re-sign a closer.

For all those laughing at any team playing meaningful games in Oct you just prolonged the Braves curse.

All the Braves have done since Oct 1996 is either suck/choke and lose in October or miss it entirely. We should keep our collective eyes on that reality and not laugh at teams that had more talent than the Braves and certainly more fire into the last game of the regular season.

Once you get to Oct it can be a crap shoot (regardless of payroll or season records) for the Braves they cannot even get to October in most cases.

We have nothing to laugh at or be proud of at this point. Those flags in ATL need to come down and we need to put the past where it belongs in a box in the attic.

a message to the moron saying that the Phillies are something like the losing braves that could only bring home 1 Championship:

Sorry, but you are not even half way home, still have to win almost triple the division titles Phillies have, not an easy task. And you still have to make many more WS appearances…………I suppose you learned last night that that part aint going to be easy either.

The Phils scored just one run in the final 17 innings of the series as St. Louis came back to win the last two games.

There was a moment during regular season that it looked like the 4 teams that would play the Championship Series would be Boston, NY, PHI and ATL…….. LOL

What a huge disappointment for all those team……..each one in a different way, but at the end of the day, same bitter, sour taste……4 UNBELIEVABLE stories………..you can add the STL, ARZ, MIL and DET stories and this have been one of the wildest baseball campaigns ever……….. The only team that has not been something that surprises the baseball world has been TEX, the rest of the stories came out of nowhere.

So, I took a few minutes this morning and watched the final innings (and the Cardinals half of the first) of the big Game 5s last night.

Nyjer Morgan = an easy guy to root against. Dropping back2back f-bombs on camera reveals a lot about the guy’s lack of character.

Now that the Cardinals have risen from the dead, I hope they stomp over Nyjer and the rest of the heap from Milwaukee.

Somewhat slow baseball people continue to sign big overweight first basemen to long term contracts – Howard, Vaughn etc. This off season, someone will make the same mistake with Fielder. Happily with Freeman in place, it won’t be the Braves.

Lew, to your point. I have wondered in recent years how the nation would respond to the networks marketing stars in other markets, and seeing whether or not you could have legitimate interest in a Milwaukee-San Diego game in mid-June.

Instead, they have become convinced and/or are trying to convince us that the only match-ups were highlighting are Yankees-Red Sox and Cubs-Cardinals.

Proposed trade
To Detroit: Prado, Lowe and cash
To Atlanta: Delmon Young and Ramon Santiago

Also any chance McCann could begin transitioning into a 3rd baseman?
Not particularly this season. Maybe start taking infiled practice and playing a few inings in blow out games. He needs to get out from behind the plate and we need a 3rd baseman soon.

I think it will be interesting what the Yankees, Boston and Philly will do, have they learned the lesson?

I think the Yankees have started to look for young talent to built up:
Montero, Swisher, Cano, Gardner, Hughes, Yoba……….They didnt want to pay to posada, jeter and mariano tons of money, a thing they would always felt comfortable doing………I know age was the problem, but I think they are being more careful with they checkbook now than a few years ago.

Think Philly will bring Rollins back as Yanks paid Jeter, I suppose that works in our favor, superstar kind of money for a players that is not a superstar anymore.

Oswalt is gone IMO.

I think Ibañez is their Conrad, he had lots of clutch HR, but they will actually be a better team with him gone.

If Tigers were so stupid, they wouldnt be were they are………..Santiago is the best glove they have and young tore out the yanks with 3 HR…………on the other hand Prado just finished his worst season in recent memory and Lowe is what he is………..Why would the Tigers do this…………I would gladly read your idea, maybe Im missing something here.

Maybe is that CASH part, if you are talking 20M

Only if 40 throwing errors a season is acceptable. Not even Freddie Freeman could keep a foot down and catch all those high, sailing throws that are not a error for a catcher but are for a 3B.

Funny! McFann O O o ~u never know when a player may lose it are other reasons u wish to trade them..u never know u may grow wings so u wont bump your tail when u step off the curb. They traded Murphy as good example.
