Wasted scoring opportunities undermine Braves

Say what you will about the injury-riddled Braves pitching staff’s pattern of “five-and-fly” starts in recent weeks, or the weariness and sudden vulnerability of a heretofore overwhelming bullpen, but that could be overcome if not for an anemic offense.

Playing on a balky knee, Chipper Jones has still been one of the only Braves to hit consistently with runners in scoring position this season, particularly in the second half.

Playing on a balky knee, Chipper Jones has still been one of the only Braves to hit consistently with runners in scoring position this season, particularly in the second half.

The Braves’ .239 team batting average in September is better than only the Cubs and Padres in the NL, and their .669 OPS is better than only the Astros and Padres. The Cubs, Astros and Padres, as you know, are going nowhere but home in a few days.

And that’s not even the worst of it. No, the most damning and inexplicably awful statistic about this Braves lineup is this one: They have hit .181 (32-for-177) with runners in scoring position during the month of September.

Think about that. This is a team that was the league’s second-best with RISP during the first quarter of the season, trailing only the Cardinals.

Back on May 15, when the Braves were about to beat the Phillies for the second day in a row to take a series at Philly, they were hitting .305 (87-for-285) with RISP, eight points behind the Cardinals (.313) and 54 points above the league average.

Today the Cardinals still lead the league with a .286 average with RISP, while the Braves are ninth at .249, one point below the league average. They have hit .232 with RISP since mid-May; the Nationals and Giants are the only NL teams to hit below .232 for the season.

But .232 is solid compared to the pitiful clutch hitting the Braves have done in September, when they’ve consistently wasted opportunities with runners in scoring position, particularly with less than two outs.

Other than a pitcher coughing up a lead an inning after his team stakes him to said lead, there is little in baseball more deflating for a team than getting runners at third, or second and third — or even with the bases loaded in the Braves’ case – with one or none out and failing to get any of them in. The Braves have made a habit of that lately.

In September alone, they have had games in which they’ve gone 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-9, 0-for-10, 1-for-10, 2-for-12, and the topper, 3-for-20.

The Braves have gone 1-4 in their past five games and hit .188 with 10 runs. Four of those games were against the Marlins and Nationals. Two more teams going nowhere but home in a few days.

Seven of the Braves’ 10 runs in those games came in one game, a 7-4 win over the Nats.

They’ve lost three in a row since then and total three runs and 17 hits in those three games while being outscored 11-3 by the Nationals and Phillies.

♣ Tonight’s matchup: It’s become the biggest game of the season for the Braves, whose magic number to clinch the wild card over St. Louis was reduced to two when the Astros beat the Cardinals last night, keeping the Braves’ WC lead at one game.

Think about this, the Braves have reduced their magic number from six to two while winning one game.

Tonight it’s Derek Lowe (9-16, 4.92) looking for some atonement, facing the Phillies’ Roy Oswalt (8-10, 3.86).

Braves need a big start out of the struggling Lowe tonight, with magic number down to two and a one-game lead over St. Louiis in wild-card race with only two games left.

Braves need a big start out of the struggling Lowe tonight, with magic number down to two and a one-game lead over St. Louiis in wild-card race with only two games left.

Depending how you look at it, the Braves either have little chance tonight, or they and Lowe are past due to have a big game against the Phillies.

The Braves have lost five in a row to the Phillies and hit .200 with a 7.40 ERA in those games, totaling 32 hits while being outscored 36-9. The Phillies hit .324 and posted a 1.60 ERA in those five games.

Atlanta is 6-10 with a .224 BA and 4.49 ERA against the Phillies this season, and has scored two runs or fewer in seven of those 16 games.

Lowe used to thrive against the Phillies, but he’s just 2-6 with a 4.59 ERA in eight starts against them over the past two seasons, including 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA and .375 opponents’ average in the past two.

His overall struggles have been well chronicled, and Lowe has become the favorite whipping boy of a large segment of the fan base. But so important is tonight’s game, I’m betting he could change a lot of minds with one strong performance.

Lowe is 2-5 with a 5.02 ERA in his past seven starts, and since the All-Star break he is 4-9 in 13 starts with a 5.91 ERA, .316 opponents’ average, .379 OBP and .844 OPS. Yikes.

Looking for a ray of sunshine amid all the negative-trend stats? Here’s one: Oswalt is 1-3 with a 5.15 ERA in 11 regular-season g ames (10 starts) against the Braves, his worst ERA against any team he’s face more than twice.

Also, Oswalt is 1-1 with a 5.86 ERA in seven games (six starts) at Turner Field, his highest regular-season ERA at any ballpark where he’s pitched more than once.

However, it must be noted that he’s 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA and .169 opponents’ average in four games (three starts) against the Braves over the past two seasons. The win was this season on April 9, when he allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings of his most recent start at Turner Field.

Against Oswalt, Alex Gonzalez is 12-for-29 (.414) with two homers, Jack Wilson is 25-for-69 (.362), but Dan Uggla is 3-for-24 with 10 strikeouts.

Against Lowe, Hunter Pence is 8-for-17 with a homer, Chase Utley is 15-for-36 (.417) with two homers, three walks and no strikeouts. Ryan Howard is just 11-for-46 (.239) with no homers, and Raul Ibanez is 6-for-45 (.133) albeit with two homers.

♣Venters update: After allowing another earned run in Monday’s game, Jonny Venters has now allowed as many earned runs (nine) in his past 14 appearances as he’s allowed in his previous 70 appearances.

Every Day Jonny has a 6.08 ERA and .294 opponents’ average in his past 14 appearances, with 15 hits and nine earned runs in 13-1/3 innings.

This after after allowing 38 hits and nine earned runs in 73-2/3 innings in his first 70.

He’s been scored upon in seven of his past 14 appearances since Aug. 26, after allowing no runs and a .111 OA in 23 appearances from July 4 through Aug. 25.

♣ Key bats still cold: Until this summer, Brian McCann and Martin Prado were two of the Braves’ best clutch hitters. McCann, in particularly, was one of their steadiest hitters with runners in scoring position for most of his career.

But neither has been the same, or even close, since a stint on the DL, McCann for an oblique strain and Prado for more than a month with with a staph infection.

McCann is 21-for-125 (.168) in 35 games since returning from the DL, with three doubles, six homers, 16 RBIs, 29 strikeouts, .288 OBP and .336 slugging. The Braves are 17-18 in those games.

He had a two-homer game at Chicago on Aug. 25 and said he’d found something in his swing that morning in the cage, something that clicked. Then he didn’t play for the next four days — the next night’s game at New York before the next two against the Mets got postponed by Hurricane Irene.

The Braves had three days off including their already scheduled off day for that Monday.

McCann’s next game after the two-homer game was Aug. 30 vs. Washington, and beginning with that game he’s hit .165 (14-for-85) in 24 games with two homers, nine RBIs, 14 walks, 21 strikeouts, three GIDP, a .290 OBP and .259 slugging. Did you ever think you’d see Mac hav a .549 OPS over 24 games?

Prado’s retured from the DL in mid-July and has hit .246 in 66 games with four homers, 23 RBI, .286 OBP and .333 slugging.

In his past 31 games, Prado has hit .206 (26-for-126) with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 6 walks, .242 OBP and .270 slugging, a meaguer .512 OPS.

♣ OK, gotta get down to the clubhouse. Let’s close with a great tune from the criminally underrated master songwriter, Alejandro Escovedo. You can see him sing “Always a Friend” with a friend you may recognize by clicking here.

alejandro-escovedo

“ALWAYS A FRIEND” by Alejandro Escovedo and Chuck Prophet

Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Do you wanna be my friend?
Do you wanna be my friend?

Every once in a while honey let your love show
Every once in a while honey let yourself go
Nobody gets hurt no, nah
Nobody gets hurt

We came here as two, we laid down as one
I don’t care if I’m not your only one
What I see in you, you see in me

But if I do you wrong smoke my smoke, drink my wine
Bury my snake skin boots somewhere I’ll never find
Still be your lover baby, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Do you wanna be my friend?
Do you wanna be my friend?

Every once in a while honey let yourself go
Every once in a while honey let your love show
Nobody gets hurt no, no
Nobody gets hurt

Well, I could be an astronaut on the wrong side of the moon
Or wrapped up like a baby on a bus under you
Wherever I go you go with me

But if I do you wrong, take the master suite, I’ll take the floor
Sleep in late, get your rest, I’ll catch up on mine
Still be your lover, baby, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Wasn’t I always a friend to you?
Every once in a while honey let your love show
Every once in a while honey let yourself go, yeah
Nobody gets hurt, it’s only love, love, love
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Is there a way to look at runners at 3B with less than 2 outs (or 2nd with no outs) and see how we compare at that. So many nights a hit would be great but one or two fly balls would get in at least one

It was great that Constanza had that great stretch (July 29-August 22), but the reason we’re not wining right now is NOT because he’s on the bench.

During that stretch, Chipper went 18-48 (.374), Uggla hit in EVERY game and went 31-89 (.348) and Bourn went 25-83 (.300).

Compare that to their last nine (thanks Ten Paul) – Chipper .242, Uggla .257 and Bourn .158 and you might see why we’re not winning and it has nothing whatsoever to do with Constanza sitting on the bench.

Hope Georgie has a future with the Braves, but let’s get real.

I’m not so sure Moneyball (the movie) has much validity when there is no mention of Hudson, Mulder or Zito. Seems to me they were responsible more than any other aspect for any success Beane had.

Lew, don’t know if you saw the MLB Network interview that Bob Costas did with Beane, Michael Lewis, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. Beane and Lewis address those who discredit Beane for Hudson, Mulder and Zito.

First of all, all three guys were college players and drafting college players was sort of a theme, as college players aren’t as risky and were probably undervalued at the time.

Second, Hudson was drafted in the 6th round and was probably passed up by other teams because he was a short, right-hander. Zito slipped to 9th overall because he was essentially a soft-tossing lefty. Mulder was the one athletic guy that looked the part and was on everyone’s radar, and he went 2nd overall.

So Hudson and Zito definitely fit into the philosophy espoused in Moneyball. Mulder fits in terms of being a college guy.

with the way they have played since getting swept in Philly why would a rational person expect them to snap out of their funk against Oswalt, and further, expect Lowe to turn it around for one night. Isn’t this the definition of insanity? Lowe has been so bad for so long it’s a wonder he’s even out there every 5th day. Has he made it to the 7th inning more than once since the All Star break? Give him a really short leash. Get him out of there if he struggles finding the plate early on. That’s the harbinger of doom. It’s absolutely incredible that the entire team has stopped hitting. Where’s the hitting coach in all this mess. Their plate discipline has vanished. And we just haven’t taken advantage of Bourne’s speed to manufacture any runs.
Please guys do something good for a change.

Gutless, choking dogs. Gutless, spineless, choking dogs. With no heart. Or urgency.

I’ll be interested to see if Chipper can move at all. And I’ll be interested to see if Rollins or Victorino tries to test that knee by bunting. My gut tells me that while they don’t want to give the Braves the game, they are playing with injuries in mind. For example, Pence pulling up on Diaz’s double yesterday or Ibanez not going full speed on Uggla’s 2b in the 9th. So, I think they will avoid plays that will force them to go full speed, like a bunt.

Can’t believe that Lowe is starting. Might as well start Linderflunk. No chance, no way the Braves win when you add zero offensive skill with a zero starter. I’ll sum up tonight’s game for you before it even starts:
Start with Lowe who can’t pitch,
Then add in Braves hitters who can’t hit (except Chipper), hell can’t even bunt,
Then add in Braves runners who are too slow, like McCann (except Bourne) and prone to mistakes,
Then add in Braves courage which is zero as they are all time chokers,
Then add in Fredi who can’t manage jack s____,
When you sum it all up—you have another Braves loss.

Lew, there was also no mention of Miguel Tejada or Eric Chavez in the movie. It’s been a while since I read the book but I don’t recall Tejada, Chavez, Hudson, Mulder or Zito being central figures in the book either. Probably because both the book and the movie were about finding undervalued players by using different methods than many other teams, so Lewis and the screenwriters are going to focus on the most undervalued players.

In other words, the movie is not primarily a story about the greatness of the 2002 A’s or early 2000’s A’s. It was primarily about how, through ways of looking at the game that were different from many teams at the time, the A’s were able to compete with teams like the Yankees though the A’s payroll was much lower. If the book or the movie were just a profile of the 2002 A’s, then Tejada, Chavez, Zito, Hudson, Mulder would be glaring omissions.

If someone writes a book primarily specifically about the Braves’ methods to finding undervalued players in the 1990’s and those undervalued players, do you think they would focus on Justice, Gant, McGriff and Chipper or do you think they would focus on Greg McMichael, Kerry Ligtenberg, Mike Remlinger, etc.?

Mc Cann has to be benched as he can’t get it done.
they refuse to skip Lowe’s turn. it is amazing how they will not admit he stinks. why can delgado start, but not Teheran who is the better prospect ?
did they expect to make the playoffs by losing every series in Sept ?
can’t hit lefties and don’t hit righties much better. Capunao and Detwiler mesmerized them, but noone else in the NL.
look at the hitters they got NOTHING for – Melky, Francoeur, Kotchman, Lee. all are hitting better than all Barves except Freeman and maybe Uggla.

Heck no…he’s a prime candidate for the “fan fave” 6-4-3 DP.

Well…I’m off to the game in a bit…been to 4 games this year (counting tonight) and I’m prepared for the worst since Derek bLowe is pitching.

The last time I can remember a team playing in such a funk as the 2011 Braves was the Red Sox when they went down to the Yankees 3-0 in the NLCS. The year that they won 4 in a row (bloody sock, etc) to eliminate the Yanks and then go on to sweep the Cards in the WS.

When they were down 2-0 I figured they would come out with intensity. Instead, they looked lost and got demolished. That’s how the Braves look right now.

Will the Braves flip the switch the way that year’s Sox team did? Or will the disorientation continue into October? Time will tell.

Lew, there were a variety of reasons Beane had success, as is the case with most GM’s and most franchises. (Yes, I would call the 7th-best record in the majors over his tenure with one of the lowest payrolls “success.” But if you are just talking World Series wins, I guess you think the 1991-2005 Braves weren’t very successful, either.)

Moneyball, the book and the movie (which was obviously based on the book), was primarily about how the A’s found undervalued players and focused on examples of undervalued players. If it were a book primarily profiling Billy Beane, the 2002 A’s or the early 2000’s A’s or it was a 2002 A’s yearbook, the movie should have mentioned lots of other aspects of the Oakland A’s. But that’s not what the book was intended to be. Michael Lewis said what got the ball rolling was trying to find out how the A’s, with a limited payroll, were able to win 100 games and compete with the Yankees. He found that what made the A’s different from most teams, at least most of the other small-market teams, was that they heavily relied on statistics to find undervalued players. I don’t know that he’s ever said this was the only reason for their success but it was clearly an important factor.

Guillen gone from the Chi Sox. That team desperately needs to rebuild. It’s been too long. I don’t think Kenny Williams is right for that job anymore either. Someone has to get in there and explain to Reinsdorf that you have to spend on the draft. I’d deal Quentin, Danks, Floyd, Crain and Thorton this offseason. Peavy, Rios, and Dunn aren’t tradeable. Chances not great with Lowe, DOB….would rather have a rookie going tonight. — Braves sputter

Which rookie? Beachy, Delgado and Minor pitched the last three games. Teheran? What has Teheran done to give you confidence that he’s the guy to turn to in this pressurized situation over Lowe? I’m really surprised by the number of folks who act as though Teheran has excelled in his major league starts. I think Teheran is going to be really good in the future. But I also am realistic and have seen his four starts this season. They have not been anywhere near as impressive as Delgado’s, Beachy’s, or Minor’s past nine or 10.

Teheran has a 5.40 ERA and .288 opp. average in four games (three starts), with eight walks and seven strikeouts in 16-2/3 innings. In his three starts he’s worked 4-2/3 innings, 4 innings, and 5-1/3 innings.

They’re hitting .181 for nearly a full month–that ain’t randomness. Yes, they HAVE forgotten how to hit with RISP, because they’re so frightened of failing that they tighten up and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Here ends my psychological diagnosis from afar.

The Braves have no balls.

A look At Lowe – Unlucky or Awful?
AUTHOR: Fred Owens | IN: Braves | COMMENTS: None Yet
Every time Derek Lowe is scheduled to pitch, while the game is in progress and after on the blogs and twitter there are some extremely unkind, inaccurate and unjustified statements made about him. In an effort – inevitably unsuccessful – the inform and ad perspective, here are just a few words about Derek Lowe’s “bad” year.

We all know Derek Lowe hasn’t been as sharp this year don’t we? I mean look at his won/loss record he’s awful, right? Then he had that unfortunate traffic stop where the did all those awful things. The charges for those awful things were dismissed and in this country I thought innocence was true until proven false. Maybe not.In any event, Lowe is not an easy guy to like.

I get it. He’s losing games for the Braves and the heaven knows the Braves deserve better. I wrote back before the injuries to Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens that he should move to the bullpen until he fixed whatever was wrong. If those two were healthy I’m sure he’d be there now. But, they aren’t healthy, the Braves have a shortage of starters and he is going to start a critical game tonight. Besides, the numbers don’t say what you think they do. So let’s take personalities out of this and look at how he has actually pitched.

I guess if asked most of you would say something like awful, terrible or horrible. Many fans berate his performance while ignoring similar performances by others. Keep in mind (please) that I come to profile Lowe’s starts, not to praise him. I’m just going to show the numbers for each starter and let you take a look.

For Lowe I’ve shown the 13 games before and his 13 starts since the AS Game.

For Beachy, Hudson and Minor I’m using starts since the All Star game.

For JJ and Hanson I used their last 13 starts before the All star break.

RS – Braves Runs

Here’s some of what I see, in the table.

1.) Run Production is down the second half

No matter who starts:

When we score 4 or more runs we win about 88% of the time.
When we score exactly 3 runs we lose about 70% of the time
When we score less than 2 runs we lose about 75% of the time
2.) Beachy and Lowe go 5 innings or less about the same number of times.

3.) Since the ASG Lowe and Hudson received get less run support than other starters

4.) Lowe’s BAbip rose 78 points the second half . As a reference Hudson’s is up 32 points and Beachy up 33.

BAbip indicates that hitters are putting the ball in play more often against everyone. This makes sense as pitchers get tired through the year.

Lowe is suffering more than Hudson even though both are ground ball pitchers. Lowe is missing with more hittable pitches than Hudson (the sinker is up and the slider isn’t sharp) so more balls in play turn into hits instead of double plays.

5.) Even though Beachy’s record is 4-2 that doesn’t indicate Beachy’s starts are more successful. The Braves are 5-8 when Beachy starts and 4-9 when Lowe starts.

Not shown are the innings when the pitchers allow the most runs. Lowe allows runs in about even numbers in innings 1-6 averages about 1/2 run an inning over his 33 starts. He hasn’t shown any particular inning or innings that are harder for him than the rest.

Like most strike out fly ball pitchers Beachy is vulnerable in the 1st inning before he settles in. He also tends to give up a lot of runs in the 4th inning about the time he’s going through the lineup the second time.

It’s pretty clear the Braves scored a lot more runs for Beachy than they have for Lowe in the second half. Nine times the Braves have scored three or less runs for Lowe , four times for Beachy. Seven times the Braves scored five or more for Beachy but only twice for Lowe. Given equivalent run support Lowe’s record would likely improve.

I doubt this will change anyone’s mind about Derek Lowe. I too would like to have Jurrjens and Hanson back so this wouldn’t be an issue; but we don’t. For myself, I try to understand that Lowe would not pitch as he has if he knew how to go back to his form of last September. He’s not trying to give up hits and runs and feels as badly or worse about it than you and I. After all he’s the aging vet who may not get this close to the prize again; and they all want that prize.

As always comments are invited.

Teheran could use one more year of AAA with the occasional spot start in the majors. Delgado and Minor have shown they should be in the majors. vizcaino should join Teheran at AAA to continue to work on being a starter

I think all three should start in AAA. Teheran and Delgado need to work on the breaking ball and just keep adding those “finishing touches” to be able to really work a hitter and put a hitter away. Vizcaino needs to work on the change and get stretched as a starter.

Minor is just kind of a placeholder back-of-the-rotation guy for me until those three can step in and do work. Not a bad guy to have in that slot, though. Good, young, and cheap. But not with the upside of those guys…

DOB, How can we not blame Fredi Gonzalez ? He should get the WORST MANAGER AWARD

He literally killed the Braves bullpen..,
Didn’t let his starters go deep
Didn’t play small ball well…,
We are dead last in steals and running game
The team has an average of one sacrifice fly out per month
The pitchers don’t know how to bunt or move the runners over

Even when the team started playing lousy baseball in September he acted as if nothing was wrong and will be wrong ever…,

Abs Man, Fredi is the real “and idiot” here batting Prado at all imo. And I think Mac’s oblique has caused his swing to go in slow motion. That’s not to say I’d bench him over Ross. I like this line-up posted by someone earlier. Except, suggest flipping Prado and Chipper and have Chipper on the bench until a key moment later in the game, insert Heyward in the line-up. Bunt, bunt, and then hopefully a hit. They cannot score runs. Think outside of the box. Or get swept and maybe there is a one-game playoff on Thursday. Seriously, this sucks.

“Teheran has a 5.40 ERA and .288 opp. average in four games (three starts), with eight walks and seven strikeouts in 16-2/3 innings. In his three starts he’s worked 4-2/3 innings, 4 innings, and 5-1/3 innings.” DOB

Don’t bother pointing out that 4 of his ER were in 2.2 IP of relief in that 12-2 loss to the Mets.

In his starts, his ERA is 3.68. Sure his innings don’t rack up. In his 3 starts, he’s pitched 14.2 innings.

In Lowe’s last 3 starts, he’s totaled 14.1 IP while giving up 13 ER (10.64 ERA).

I’m not saying it’s a guarantee that Teheran would pitch better than Lowe. No guarantee that Lowe doesn’t step up and pitch his best game of the year. Hard to say at this point.

But you stated:

“What has Teheran done to give you confidence that he’s the guy to turn to in this pressurized situation over Lowe? I’m really surprised by the number of folks who act as though Teheran has excelled in his major league starts.”

If Carroll has filled in for you on all of the games Lowe has pitched, I apologize. Perhaps that’s the case. But my only response to that statement is to ask you…..

You’ve seen Lowe pitch recently, haven’t you?

Like I said. No way to predict how this is going to end up. But please stop acting like we’re suggesting or debating whether Teheran should start over John Smoltz in his prime. We’re talking about a guy with a 4.92 ERA over 33 starts this year.

Can’t quit now,” said Jones, who aggravated his knee running the bases in the sixth inning on Monday night but still went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. “…I’ve been preaching all along, ‘People are tired. People are hurt. So what? Let’s go. Strap it up.’”

Jones said if it were April, he wouldn’t be playing. As it is, there’s not much he can do other than ice it and try to take it a little easier in batting practice.

Jones said he wanted to have the MRI to find out if there was anything more they could do to treat it. The tests showed his knee is still structurally sound, but without the cartilage removed in his arthroscopic surgery, he said he’s going “bone-on-bone.”

But folks who act as though Teheran has been some sort of rookie sensation, on the part with Beachy at his best or Delgado at his best, need to slow down a bit, in my opinion. Kid’s not quite ready for this yet. Braves have been fortunate to have three rookies — Beachy, Minor, Delgado — perform well in some huge starts. No team has that many kids pitching for them in a stretch drive. Four rookies in a row in the biggest games of the season? C’mon. The Braves were not going to drop Lowe from the rotation and replace him with Julio Teheran in the biggest game of the season. Sorry, just wasn’t going to happen.

Don’t bother pointing out that 4 of his [Teheran's] ER were in 2.2 IP of relief in that 12-2 loss to the Mets.

In his starts, his ERA is 3.68. Sure his innings don’t rack up. In his 3 starts, he’s pitched 14.2 innings.

In Lowe’s last 3 starts, he’s totaled 14.1 IP while giving up 13 ER (10.64 ERA). N8

I would just point out that Lowe allowed three runs and six hits in 6-1/3 innings his last start. That’s one more quality start than Teheran’s had.

R.Michael, Bourne and Victorino are different players. Victorino has developed some power but is not nearly as fast as Bourn. I think Victorino is a more solid defender too, slightly. They are both REALLY good players but I believe I would go with Victorino. I remember when Bourn was a Phillie too, saw him go from 1st to 3rd on a pickoff throw that got by the 1st basemen.
That was a great trade for the Phillies – won them a WS with Lidge.

No Braves pitchers can actually limit the damage. Anytime they allow a runner into scoring position with less than two outs the runner scores. Conversely, the Braves have trouble scoring runs with the bases loaded and no outs because nobody on that team is capable of executing a fundamental approach at the plate. Opposing pitchers probably laugh about facing the inept Braves offense.

This inning is ALL on Brian McCann for screaming to Lowe to throw at third. Anyone with some sense knew Ruiz was already safe before Lowe even threw the ball.

He has the worst batting average in MLB since the date he came off the DL and his defense is atrociously terrible. He just cost the Braves a very important run in that inning.

Brian McCann has seriously destroyed this team and is the person that should wear it around the neck if the Braves don’t make it to the playoffs. He is awful in every category of the game right now.

Wthere a Brave fan alive that actually thought Lowe was going to pitch well tonight. I don’t so much blame him…he just sucks….as I blame the manager for running him out there every turn no matter how bad he is. Why not Tehehan or anyone tonight? This game started with a 4-5 run deficit by virtue of him pitching.

Fredi is awful, awful. For some time wish Ozzie Guillen would come here, shake things up, get rid of this country club mentality. The only thing that matters to the Braves is if someone is a good clubhouse guy. Forget ability. You would think Schafer was a HOFer as much as the Braves were sad about him leaving.

Bourn is the most competitive guy on our team…and our newest Brave. Just sick to death of this “nice guy” thing all day every day. NO WAY does Lowe start tonight’s game! Had a 0% chance at success. Thanks for the “loyalty” Fredi. Pathetic.

Must say, I don’t even think it’s his fault…if the coach can’t see how poorly he’s been…and can’t pull the plug on the guy…then what else is he suppose to do quit? He’s going to take the mound when given the chance.

This is on the coach to shut him down for the year. These games mean far too much to roll out a man that just doesn’t have it anymore and hasn’t for some time.

Sorry Lowe, I hope to god you aren’t in the rotation on my Braves vacation next summer……I managed to schedule the Giants series this summer without you and hope to do the same down the road. I won’t pay to see this.

I dunno, Lee. I do like how the lineup is currently constructed. I just don’t like how all the bats seem to go cold at the same time. That’s the real problem; the problem isn’t that we have bad players.

And I guess if I “have” to point any fingers (which I don’t like to do), I’d say it mostly rests on Prado and Heyward. But I don’t anticipate either of them being as bad next year. But moving Prado back to a super-UT role wouldn’t be a bad option if a good everyday LF can be found.

This is not the NBA where you are better off finishing 9th in the conference and missing the playoffs as opposed to 8th and getting swept in the first round.

HT

Listen, this has been a horrible collapse–but the Braves are a team that completely fed
off their pitching in the first half of the season, particularly the big three of JJ, Hanson and Hudson. The hitting has been problematic all year–though as the columnist pointed out they did get a lot of key
hits in the first half of the year and won a TON of close games. With their best pitchers out, the Braves tried to hold on but eventually their confidence just cratered. They might have held up losing only one starter, but not two. What’s been bad is that they’ve lost a lot of games this month to teams that aren’t very good. The wild card race will be tied after tonight, with tomorrow to decide it. Imagine having to face Lee and Oswalt and the Phils when you HAVE to win a couple of games. THAT is a cruel scheduling twist.

So, is my math right? The Braves have scored 2 runs in the last 33 innings?

Trey: You’re really going to feel like an idiot when you realize you didn’t use the correct form of “you’re”.

Trey, you are really going to feel like an idiot when you realize that you just assumed that guy will realize he used the wrong form of you’re.

TnBrian is right about next spring. Gonzalez will be an ongoing catastrophe – neither the fans nor the players will respect him and it will be awful. After Philly’s epic collapse under Gene Mauch in 1964, he was never the same. He was “that loser manager”. The Phillies got worse and worse until Mauch was fired and didn’t really recover for 12 years. This isn’t just bad baseball. This is bad business. They have to get this out of their system and fire him. No choice.

Is asking for 2 more wins too much for Astros? Looks like they want to kick STL out of this!

Give guys millions of dollars and they can’t stay in shape.

Give guys millions of dollars and they can’t watch hours of film to correct their faults.

Give guys millions of dollars only to hire guys who have never had experience as a hitting coach to teach them.

Grief.

Yeah that’d have been a bad idea to start Teheran over Lowe. Sure. He only throws 95 and has fire. He could’ve gone a few innings, then let a combo of maybe Medlen and Vizcaino bridge the gap between EOF and Kimbrel.

Not Fredi though. It’s too simple I guess.

Now maybe the outcome would be the same as now, but Lowe gives you NO chance at all.

Everyone whats to know what is wrong with this team. And all the talking heads have different answers. There is only one very simple answer in my mind. Coaching. Or lack there of.

It started with approach. The offensive approach. This ENTIRE team has gotten away from being patient and trying to hit a homer every time up. The coaches even admitted to telling the guys to be more aggressive. As the season wore on and multiple players were encountering huge slumps, no real adjustments were made. And now they are playing some of their worst baseball all year. They cant seem to score at all. Now it is in their heads. The WHOLE TEAM is in a huge slump. Mentally they are screwed. The coaches are responsible for turning a team around. The Braves are MILES better than they are playing, and its up to the staff to motivate them and get them back on track. No such thing has happened. Fredi doesnt know what to do. He is just as lost as the players.

Inefficient pitching, overworked bullpen, … all of it can be brought right back to this teams inability to put runs on the board.

The staff needs to go. Period.

how is this Fredi G’s fault? The monumental collapse certainly wasn’t going to be averted by a pitching change at a different time; or a lineup change.

Anyone who thinks that (and I see many of you seem to), obviously never played baseball at any competetive level (or any sport at a competetive level for that matter).

You are just making him into a convenient fall guy because its easier than calling the whole team out.

“Would anything they do in this year’s playoffs be worse than the 1996 World Series? Or even, for that matter, the 2000 NLDS?”

Perhaps not, but a turd a bit smaller still looks like and smells like a turd.

Oswalt struck out Heyward to start inning and Bourn to finish it, and neither of them swung at a pitch. Heyward looked at all four pitches, Bourn looked at six.
