Series preview: vs Phillies
When (TV): 7:10 p.m. Monday (SPSO); 7:10 p.m. Tuesday (SPSO); 7:10 p.m. Wednesday (SPSO).
Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5
Probable starting pitchers:
Monday: Braves RH Randall Delgado (1-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. LH Cliff Lee (16-8, 2.38)
Tuesday: Braves RH Derek Lowe (9-16, 4.92) vs. RH Roy Oswalt (8-10, 3.86)
Wednesday: Braves RH Tim Hudson (16-10, 3.23 ERA) vs. TBA
About the Braves:
• Batting: After collecting 11 hits in Friday’s win over Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals, the Braves managed only 10 hits in two losses to the Nats to follow, while hitting .167. They’ve been shut out twice in four games, 4-0 to the Marlins on Wednesday and 3-0 to the Nats on Sunday. The Braves’ top four hitters in the order went 0-for-16 on Sunday. Brian McCann, who got the day off Sunday, is hitting .192 in September.
• Pitching: Delgado picked up his first major league win in his last outing against the Marlins, with five shutout innings in a 4-0 win on Tuesday. He has made six major league starts, and allowed one or fewer runs in four of the six. He has pitched only five innings in each of his past four starts, while throwing 90 or more pitches each time. This is his first start against the Phillies, and third against a playoff team from last year (Giants, Rangers). Rookies have accounted for 59.3 percent of the innings by Braves starters in September.
• Miscellaneous: The Braves will have to go through the Phillies in the final series of the season for the second straight year in order to make the playoffs. The Braves’ wild card lead is down to one game with three to play. The Braves are 6-9 against the Phillies this season: 3-6 at Citizens Bank Park and 3-3 at Turner Field.
About the Phillies:
• Batting: The Phillies’ offense broke out in a 9-4 win over the Mets on Sunday, which snapped an eight-game losing streak. Using their regular lineup for the first time since they clinched, each regular Phillies starter had at least one hit, and Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer. The Phillies had scored three or fewer runs 15 times in their previous 17 games. Ryan Howard went 3-for 7 in two games against the Mets, after returning from ankle injury.
• Pitching: This is Lee’s final tune-up for his Game 2 start in the Division Series. He lost his last start via 3-0 shutout against the Nats to snap a 7-0 winning streak dating back to July 30. The Phillies had won Lee’s previous nine starts, while he put up a 1.00 ERA. Lee is 1-2 in four starts against the Braves this season, despite a 3.29 ERA. He pitched a complete game shutout to beat them on Sept. 5, 9-0 at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are expected to use their bullpen to cover Wednesday’s game, starting with either Kyle Kendrick or Vance Worley.
• Miscellaneous: The Phillies swept the Braves in three games the last time they faced each other Sept. 5-7 in Philadelphia. The Phillies are 1-9 since they clinched their fifth straight NL East championship. Their eight-game losing streak was the worst by any team that had clinched since the World Series began in 1903 according to STATS.

Would it not make sense to start a pitcher on Tuesday that the Phillies have never seen especially since they have lost eight of their last nine games. I was thinking maybe Teheran since the Phil’s know Lowe better than just about anybody. Come on Fredi – don’t let player loyalty blind you. Lowe has been awful this month!

Fredi leaves an empty hole in what could have been a great season. Should have let Terry manage at least he had team hitting last year. Parrish should have already been gone. Not starting constanza has cost us plenty. We where winning games with him in there. Anyway hope we make it?

It would not matter if the Braves had Smotlz,Glavine, and Maddux pitching the next three games. If you can’t score runs you ain’t gonna win no matter who pitches against the Phillies. The Phillies just ain’t gonna roll over for the Braves, they gonna go all out to beat the Braves.

Well Chipper I am a big fan of yours, but when you said we would take care of the phillies in the playoffs u must have meant next year and I would take odds against this team even reaching .500 with fredi g and larry P and D.lowe on it.The braves are a total embarrasment and really don’t deserve the playoffs if some miracale they make it.I will be pulling for the cardinals and yes I was I life long fan.It almost like they were paid money to take a dive.Bad News Bears 3.

The Truth,
I have no problem whatsoever with Chipper putting his family first. The thing I do have a problem with is him running his mouth instead of hitting. His little “we’re going to win today” comment the other night…should have been “They’re going to win,” because he sure hasn’t done much with his bat to contribute to the effort.
The fact the Braves have lost 6 of 9 to bottom feeders is concerning. The fact that they act like they don’t give a rats’ *** is alarming. Fredi Gonzales is no change from Bobby Cox. The loyalty…why is Lowe still starting?… Why does Larry Parrish still have a job? … Our late inning relievers are shot from overuse… It really is no change from the last few years.
I would just like to see a water cooler or two destroyed. But same old rhetoric.

Sit Constanza….killed the offense….
Today pinch hit Conrad in the 8th (I think or was it the 9th?) leading off with Bourn up next. Why not bat Constanza to try and get something going…We needed baserunners, not a home run….
I’ll bet the Vegas odds are now leaning towards St. Louis……………smart money has to go with them…their peaking and we’ve been bailing for a month…..
Fredi and Chipper….and even McCann (should have sat himself down many times since his oblique)…..Ross was there today in the only two threats we had….top of the order couldn’t get them in….
I am disgusted with them….and especially FREDI….

Who cares? Really? I’ve followed the Braves faithfully since I arrived here in 1988. This year, I saw all or part of every game on TV and two at the Ted… until last Monday when I watched the Falcons and stopped watching the train wreck. Now I can watch the Falcon train wreck. It’s so depressing. At least there are the Hawks… oh wait, no they aren’t playing this year and lucky they aren’t as they are great disappointments as well. Maybe my college, GSU… oh wait, they haven’t won and got killed by Houston 56-0. Maybe I’ll take up a hobby, this sports thing isn’t going too well.. really!

I can see it now………They are 10 games up!!! No Way will they lose 65 % of the ball games in the last month of the season! I would have taken that risk.
The team is flat all the way around that is for sure. Where is Pascual Perez or Chief Knock-a-Homa when you need them ???

The future — oth immediate and short-term do not look good. Like someone posted earlier, I’d rather be the Cardinals being 1-game down with 3 on the road at Houston, than the Braves — 1 game up with 3 to go against Philly (and a 21-year old kid and Lowe going the next 2 games) They could have Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz going, and it still wouldn’t matter if you can’t score.
Given the Braves payroll and the contracts to Chipper and Lowe for next year, I can’t see the team doing better than 3rd place (if lucky) The Nats won this series not because of Fredi or choking, but because they were the better team. They will have more money to spend this offseason, and they have more talent on the way in the near future. What position are the Braves better than the Nats next year with current rosters? 1B and CF are the only two I can see — I’ll take the young Espinosa over the older Uggla and Ramos with offense and defense combined is as good or better than Mac. Their starting pitching with Strasburg as a true ace looks as good or better than ours and the back of their pen can be just as nasty as ours.

Derek “Kawakami” Lowe is pitching Tuesday… a CERTAIN LOSS… enough said about Lowe (Otis’ son on the Andy Griffith Show).
If the Braves lose out on the Wildcard to the Cardinals, Fredi Gonzalez NEEDS to be fired due to a TOTAL LACK of leadership and motivation.
All you need to know about Fredi’s managing skills is you DON’T bring in a total bum like Christian Martinez in a CLOSE game. Martinez pitches in games as an innings eater in a blow-out game, long relief and mop-up. Now all of a sudden Fredi uses Martinez in a crucial situation. Fredi is way over his head in a MLB managing role.
Fredi Gonzalez, (childhood actor who portrayed Ricky Ricardo JR. on the I Love Lucy Show) needs to be dumped like a bad habit ala Flordia Marlins.
DON’T BOTHER benching Jason “BUST” Heyward now… Heyward SHOULD have been sent down to the minors mid-season to FIND his swing. Another “patented” Strikeout in the top of the ninth. Heyward still hasn’t grasped the notion of STANDING CLOSER TO THE PLATE!!!! Heyward is SCARED of the ball and is OVERMATCHED at the MLB level.
Genius Fredi will probably START “Matty” Diaz against Cliff Lee tommorrow night (you know Matt Diaz “rakes” lefthanders)…. NOT!!!!! Give me a break!!!!! Diaz is another WASHED UP BUM the Braves seem to like in their arsenal. Think about this fact… even in a CAREER year Matt Diaz is ONLY going to hit .250 with 7 homers. Great.
As I’ve said before, enjoy the LAST 3 games Michael Bourn will be in an Atlanta Braves uniform. Liberty CHEAPIA and Scott Boras DON’T play well together.
In closing, Derek Lowe is a WASHED UP DRUNKEN bum. THANK YOU Frank Wren (firefrankwren.com) for ADDING that 4th year at 15 million (2012). Wren’s NEVER heard of a team option or buyout clause. While Brian McCann spends off days in the batting cage, Derek “DUI” Lowe spends his time at the local pubs, bars, and taverns.
At least I WON’T have to watch the MLB playoffs because the Braves WON’T be in them. Go Cardinals.

I’m trying to stay positive here but we are going against the Phillies and the Cards are going against the Astros? Not even funny! We have the Rookie going in the first game, Lowe (say no more) in the second then we would have to waste Hudson in the finale instead of saving him for Game 1 of the Division series. Not a pretty picture!

It’s not a pretty picture, I’ll say that, but it’s going to be some great baseball, win or lose. These guys will fight hard, and I can’t wait to see it. Their entire season comes down to this–don’t think they’ll let this one pass them by. I’m heading to the game Wednesday night, possibly a crucial night. I can’t wait.
I mean c’mon, even the Orioles beat the Yankees sometimes. Houston takes 2 of 3 from the Cards? Braves take 2 of 3 from the Phils? Who knows. Baseball is that kind of game. Sit back and enjoy the show–that’s why they call it The Show, right?

Who are you kidding? You must know zero about baseball if you saw “good baseball” today… our hitting has been anything but “good baseball”…..it has been attrocious all year. If we had some hitting this year we would have clinched the wild card two weeks ago and be figthting the Philies these last three games for the Penant not losing the Wild card.
And BTW I’ve been a Braves fan since 1956 when they were in Milwaukee, so don’t give me any of that junk about being a fair weather fan….

Interesting that you mentioned Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux against the current
Phillies pitchers. Forget the three games this week and try to imagine if the Braves
and Phillies make it to the NL Championship with them (plus Avery) going against
Halladay, Lee, Hamels and either Oswalt or Worley! Talk about a pitching series for
the ages! We can dream anyway……Speaking from Philly, I’m more concerned about
Cholly screwing things up. All his talk about having our regular line up back, but what good
is that if Rollins, Utley and Polly keep going ‘O-for’ game after game! And Howard swinging for the fences on every pitch, plus him never seeing a pitch outside and in the dirt he didn’t like! Anyway, with all the bitch-in I’m seeing here about Fredi keep in mind that we haveto suffer with Cholly playing his favorites no matter how bad they’re going…..

Alot of people are blaming Fredi G. He’s made some mistakes but he can’t swing the bat for the Braves. The #1 problem for the Braves is offense. Constanza is not the answer, he had a few good games. Why do think he has stayed in minors so long??? Chipper please retire, give Lowe away, trade Prado and McCann and one of Hanson or JJ. I believe McCann’s weight is a problem. He’s bigger than start of season. He’s doesn’t call a good game. Let’s start over with new ownership and players. Bring in some new coaches. These Braves teams, including the ones managed by Bobby Cox seem lifeless. They need a manager that has a little life and can get the best out of his players.

I think that the Braves have a good chance of winning 2 of 3 against the Phils as Charlie doesn’t seem to care about the games ,but he is managing for the playoffs now.I doubt the starters will pitch for more than seventy pitches in any game now.The bull pen needs tuning and is scarey right now.I wish you good luck,if your team doesn’t make it, it will be because of the false bravado of Chipper and friends.Stating they would beat the Phils in the playoffs seems remote now,but I would like to play the Braves to see what happens.

Fredi is due some criticism about the way he and McDowell have handled the pitching staff, but the mystery is, how do previously successful ML hitters like McCann, Jones, Prado and Uggla completely forget how to hit a baseball? Philly is coming to town looking to win the series. The 1-8 record we’ve posted since clinching is regretful, but understandable. All eight losses had us putting in our callups and resting a lot of the regulars. (Our AAA team was in the playoffs and weren’t eliminated until the night we clinched.) Our lone win came yesterday and had the playoff lineup.
The real challenge is – no big revelation here – how much the Braves want it and can get it. The Phillies want to go into the playoffs with our hitting coming to life (at bats for our regulars) and our pitchers lined up and rested, but not rusty. (That’s why Hamels will only pitch from the pen on the last game; he and Oswalt need to change places in the rotation for the playoffs.)
Put no faith or hope on who the Phillies want to face in the playoffs and adjusting their play against Atlanta. We’ve always had the attitude of “win the series”, which has taken us pretty far this year. Division rivalries aside, we don’t much care who we play; it’s “win the series”. (Our 8 game skid – including the only two sweeps against us this year – is the exception. “Rest the guys” was the main focus there.)
Atlanta’s best hope is to rely on themselves, not care about St. Louis, and concentrate on winning tonight. Only after tonight’s game – win or lose – should they worry about tomorrow night’s game. I think the Phillies will PROBABLY win two of three, and have a decent chance to sweep. But I also think that the Braves have a POSSIBILITY of winning two of three and a slim chance to sweep.
I’m looking forward to the last series of the regular season!

Same.Old.Braves……different season. Leave to them to have a collapse within a collapse. They get the 3 game lead following Friday’s matchup…and still figure out a way to put themselves in the worst possible situation…i.e. we get the Phils who are pissed following 8 game skid and need to heat up for postseason and will be trotting out all starters, while Cards get the lAstros,, perfect….i.e. the perfect collapse. The Boobs will likely end up tied and lose the 1 game playoff in St. Louis…and instead of quietly choking their way off the field in front of their fans…. will get to experience yet another team celebrate like they won the World Series when St. Louis goes nuts… so, there is something to be said about consistency. They don’t make the playoffs, but get to lose like they were in the playoffs….LOL…. what a waste.

@ Old Head Bravo Fan: *shrug* You’re right about the Philly papers. But I’m pretty sure Charley and the team don’t read the papers a whole bunch. And if the team really did prefer to face one team over another, it’s not going to affect the desire to win. Sure; if by winning our last three games we’d get the “lowly” Braves in the playoffs rather than the “mighty” Cards, then we’d try to win our last three games.
We’re at the point where it’s probably more important to enter the post season with momentum than it is to try to affect who we’re going to play in the first or second round by selective losing. We’ve already done that by resting our starting lineup and resting/setting up or pitching rotation; and lost eight games to do it. Now it’s time to kick start the offense, which began yesterday against the Mets and will continue in Atlanta.
Ultimately, of course, and I’m sure both you and I can agree it’s for the best, what finally DOES happen will be settled on the field, when our respective managers run out their lineups and we play ball for one final series in September.

No worries SOB ,,remember it was the great Karl Young that said “Even ze happy life cannot be without ze measure of darkness, and ze word happy would lose itz meaning if it zwere not balanced by ze sadness. It is far better take things as zey come along with patience and equanimity when watching ze Braves”
what of it?

If the Cards take two from the Astros series and Braves salvage 1 against the Phils, Who do you start in St. Louis for the tie breaker?

hopefully the team can start hitting and win despite a poor job of manging– why not bunt on your own–even if the mgr is not calling for it? lord know charlie will outmange fredi half asleep so maybe the talent can rise above the manging
