Next for Braves: New York Mets

Series preview: vs Mets

When (TV): 7:35 p.m. Friday (SPSO); 4:11 p.m. Saturday (FOX); 1:35 p.m. Sunday (FSSO).

Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5

Probable starting pitchers:

Friday: Braves RH Derek Lowe (9-14, 4.70 ERA) vs. LH Chris Capuano (10-12, 4.49)

Saturday: Braves RH Tim Hudson (14-10, 3.32) vs. RH R.A. Dickey (8-12, 3.43)

Sunday: Braves RH Brandon Beachy (7-2, 3.43 ERA) vs. RH Dillon Gee (12-6, 4.42)

About the Braves:

• Batting: Since returning from three games out to rest a sore lower back, Alex Gonzalez has hit 8-for-11 with three doubles and five RBIs. His three-run homer Wednesday was the game-winner against the Marlins. Brian McCann hit a three-run homer Tuesday on a 2-for-4 night to rebound from 1-for-6, with two strikeouts with RISP on Monday. Chipper Jones is hitting .289 against the Mets this season, with four homers and 13 RBIs, his most against any team.

• Pitching: The Braves have won both of Lowe’s starts against the Mets this season, while he’s gone 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two quality starts. He hasn’t faced them since June 3, when he allowed three runs in six innings. Lowe pitched well in three starts in the late August (three earned runs in 18 innings), but he’s lost his last two starts to the Phillies and Cardinals while allowing 11 runs (nine earned) in 11 innings.

• Miscellaneous: The Braves swept a doubleheader from the Mets in New York in two make-up games from Hurricane Irene. Leading into the hurricane delay, the Braves had won 14 of 19. Since then they’ve won only seven of 17.

About the Mets:

• Batting: The Mets have scored only 2.5 runs per game over a six-game losing streak, including one run in their past two losses to the Nats. Shortstop Jose Reyes is hitting .300 since his return from a second DL stint on Aug. 29 but he concedes his hamstring is still balky. He’s 7-for-27 (.259) in the past two series. Justin Turner is hitting .385 in September, including 3-for-9 in that doubleheader against Braves.

• Pitching: Capuano pitched one of his best games the last time he faced the Braves on Aug. 26, the night before Hurricane Irene postponed the last two games of that series. He threw a two-hit complete game shutout in a 6-0 win, with a career-high 13 strikeouts. It was his best start since coming back from a second ligament-transplant surgery in 2008. Outside of that night, Capuano is 1-5 with a 5.57 ERA in 11 starts since July 9.

• Miscellaneous: The Mets, losers of 10 of their past 14, were eliminated from postseason play when the Braves beat the Marlins Wednesday. Third baseman David Wright has committed nine errors in his past 11 games.

Bring on the MUTTs!! The best thing, Braves fans could imagine, is to have a losing MUTTs team come to town!

Wow. Is the ownership and management of the Marlins the dickiest in baseball? Logan Morrison looks to be a short-timer there, which is great for the Braves, because Morrison is going to be a good player somewhere.

I seem to recall that the Marlins were the only team that didn’t give Bobby Cox a going away gift, because Cox had blasted their firing of Fredi.

I agree can we bench Lowe and use Huddy JJ and Beachy for the playoffs and use lowe minor for long relief? and also sit AG for Wilson. I was also wondering why Pastornicky wasnt called up?

According to Joe and Chip the other day Tommy Hanson has had no pain after the last couple of side sessions so hopefully he can come back and pitch at least one game prior to the season ending. If he can then the Braves could go into the NLDS with Hudson, Beachy, Lowe, & Hanson. If not then Minor pitches. I’m not sure the Braves put Delgado or Teheran on the post season roster. Also considering how he has come back to earth since his start I would be surprised if they put Constanza on the post season roster too even though personally I would rather have him then Brooks Conrad.

After watching his team get hammered 10-1 by the Nats on Thursday, Terry Collins said he’s disgusted and some guys look like they’ve “folded it up.” Look for the Mets to show some motivation in Game 1. Drub’m and they’ll slink away.

Oh, shut up, Markian S. Like anyone thinks the Phillies aren’t going to win the division  We put that particular issue to bed a while back. All we need to worry about is the Phillies beating the Cardinals down this weekend and the Braves stomping the Mutts to secure our wild card lead.

With Lowe going to the mound you can go ahead and chalk up anothrr loss. I’d rather have any of the rookies than Lowe. He’s been a proven loser for over a year now.

Since Constanza hurt ankle he has had very little playing time…maybe one bat every 3 or 4 days are run for someone..how do you get hot are stay hot doing that. I had rather have him playing than J-Hey most of the time. Look how the Braves won when he did play…plus game more exciting..but Braves have more tied up in Wayward. Good ole boy system still at work…………..

He is $18 million a year joke!

Matt Diaz will single handedly beat Capuano tonight? Either that or Lowe will give up 8 runs and the Braves lose 8-0. I say 50/50 either way…or maybe 90/10.

bravesfan…”Constanza hurt ankle he has had very little playing time…maybe one bat every 3 or 4 days are run for someone..how do you get hot or stay hot doing that”

And by hot, do you mean the 3-19 (.176 avg) he posted before the ankle sprain. Or do you mean the 4-26 (.154) he’s posted since the injury.

Constanza was a great shot in the arm for this during early August. But that was just a flash and Fredi knows this teams need a productive Heyward and Prado to survive in the postseason.

Jason had a pretty good 3-week stretch where he hit .273 with a more typical .375 obp. Get that boy confident again and making consistent contact and this offense could be very dangerous in the playoffs.

Lemke’s K, just take any players last couple game #’s and u could get a dozen braves with 176 ba….

pretty good three weeks..short term stats? is that what u call hot for Jason?

Constanza 317 BA 355 obp 404 slg
Jason 221 ba (lower than Nate’s) 314 obp 383 slg—-lol

And whats that “Boy” crap?

But I understand you’re the stats man with all the answers–have fun.

@lemke,agree that constanza cooled off but JH has been pretty cool all year. Subjectively, with bourne and constanza at the top of the lineup this team was faster, more aggressive AND much funner to watch(which means liitle with winning).

I am a very patient fan. I say give Lowe another start (tonight) against a team that has not been scoring runs and has little motivation. If he cannot pitch well against the Mets he is not going to succeed against anyone. If he does ok, keep him in for now; if he stinks, send him to the bullpen. With Minor, Teheran, and Delgado pitching well, give them the ball and let’s see what happens. We’ve got two weeks to work this out.
I prefer Constanza over Heyward – better defense, more speed, less power (?Heyward has seem to lost his stroke). Braves need Chipper and McCann to play every day until WC wrapped up. Braves vers Mets, Cards vers Phils. Could be a productive weekend if all goes well. Starts with Lowe’s first inning tonight.
Go Braves!

bravesfan, I didn’t say I was the stat man with all the answers. And I didn’t take the last “couple” of games to pull those stats. Those stats were over several weeks and show that Constanza had been trending down from his torrid first few weeks in August. He’s hitting .200 (7/35) over the past month, I don’t see how that’s any sort of stat manipulation. And if you care to see more stats about Constanza, see below…

.250 avg against teams with winning % over .500
.342 avg against teams with winning % less than .500
77 of his 131 plate appearances (68%) have come against the below average pitching of the Cubs, Mets, Marlins and Nats, none of which the Braves will be competing against in the postseason.

I agree the team was more fun to watch with Constanza playing. My point was the Braves stand a better chance in the postseason with a productive Heyward and Fredi’s doing the right thing by giving him the chance to work it out.

I’m not sure why you got so angry at my comments. I was just making my point about this team needing Heyward in the postseason.

Lowe’s been so bad lately his ERA seems to rise in between his starts.

9:30 pm

Is there anyone other than myself that thinks Fredi is galacticly stupid? How could he allow Lowe to give up 4 runs in the first inning and let him take the mound in the second? By the time he brought in a relief pitcher the game was over!!!!

Judgements such as the aforementioned will be the downfall of the Braves in the playoffs. Who selected Fredi to replace Bobby? Was it another of Franks brainstorms? Where in the hell is John during these decisions? Last but not least, since Bobby defended Fredi when he was fired did he have something to do with his hiring? Fredi is definitely displaying why he was fired in Marlin history.

Stumpknocker

Fredi G allowing Lowe to stay in the game after being shelled in the first inning is a shade of Bobby Cox. Surely this is Lowe’s last year in a Braves Uniform……..hasn’t shown me anything in a while. If this team makes it into the post season, they will be decided underdogs and won’t survive the first round.

@Lemkes’ Knuckler; Why are you so sold on Haward as a valuable piece of the Braves lineup? ……. If anything he is in a soph jinx. Certainly hasn’t been as productive as Freeman. Hate to say it, but I see a likeness to J Francoeur here……..all the posturing , the over playing of confidence, everything but solid stats. If he doesn’t recover next season, he will be another Francoeur.
