Lugo latest casualty of cursed locker

The Braves released Julio Lugo in preparation for activating newly-acquired Jack Wilson from the disabled list Friday and creating a spot on the 40-man roster soon to be occupied by reliever Peter Moylan. Lugo hit .136 (6-for-44) in limited action as the backup shortstop.

He’ll leave as a footnote on the season, but the answer to a great trivia question: who was the guy umpire Jerry Meals called safe on that blown call at the end of the 19-inning marathon with the Pirates? And Lugo also might be the last to sit in the locker widely considered to be cursed in the Braves clubhouse.

For years, any player who sat in the locker next to where Greg Maddux used to sit was gone by the next year, starting with Jeff Blauser when Turner Field opened in 1997. Kenshin Kawakami was the only player known to last longer than one season in it, and he probably wished he hadn’t, becoming the disappearing man on last year’s roster.

This year, four Braves have sat in that locker and lived to regret it. Joe Mather was released, Cristhian Martinez was demoted to the minors and Jordan Schafer was traded to the Astros. Lugo was its latest “victim.”

Braves general manager Frank Wren only half-kiddingly instructed clubhouse attendant Chris Van Zant Friday to board it up with plywood Friday.

“Like storm shutters in a hurricane,” Wren said.

Among some of the previous players to sit there were Bret Boone, Robert Fick, Wally Joyner, Ken Caminiti, Albie Lopez, Damian Moss, Chris Seelbach and Joe Nelson.

A cursed locker is quite a tool to have. Lowe, then McClouth … We could get ride of a lot of bad contracts.

Lugo WAS safe. Wasn’t a blown call. Catcher swiped the tag and missed him. Go to angrydingo.com for video proof.

Johnny Estrada had the cursed locker (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/braves/2004-07-18-cover-estrada_x.htm) and not only lasted for more than a season but also made the All-Star team with the Braves.

If this blog had such a locker, then it should go to Vince Doodly! Chipper haters seem to be frequent on this blog. What do they know?

Give the locker to Lowe, then Linebrink, then let FG stay in it awhile. If Bobby would have still been managing over that blown call on Ugla, he would still be screaming and waving his arms. FG just turns and walks away. Doesn’t have a clue how to manage.

They could give the locker to the whiners who are constantly complaining about Chipper, or some other player. Oh, no, wait – they can’t, because the whiners are not players, they are simply losers. They aren’t even fans so they probably wouldn’t step foot in the Braves locker room anyway. Playoff spot just about sewn up, playing great baseball, some great storylines and we still see the whining from the trolls, to no one’s real surprise.

Go Braves. True fans are supporting you all the way.

I believe that Chipper said it best (pre retraction) the umpiring in MLB is and has been sub-par for some time now. Being smug is no trait for an umpire to have in the big leagues.

That being said. FG has to get thrown out on the second base call on Uggla. So passive it is sickening.

Switch the locker to the visitor’s clubhouse.. I would suggest Ryan Howard’s spot.

The Braves did Lugo a favor. With what he brought to the table each day, he has no reason to complain. Good Luck to him in his retirement!!!

People should not be wishing bad things on anyone on this TEAM! You wanna give that locker to Chipper or D Lowe? Are you insane? Might as well throw away the season if you want bad things wished on people, as Rambling Man said, if you wanna be a troll, go away.

It’s ok to be critical, but don’t be an a hole. Chipper has not been mediocre. He’s still a very good player, and he’s still hitting 275, he’ll hit 280 by the end of the year with 18 HR and 75 RBIs probably. That’s a pretty damn good year if you ask me for a guy who is 39 years old and missed a quarter of the season. He’s healthy, he’s playing well and D Lowe is pitching great and we won’t succeed without him.

All involved in the decisive 19th inning play against the Braves are no longer with the Braves. Proctor at the plate, Schafer at second and Lugo at third.
