Salazar to join Braves September call-ups

Lynchburg manager Luis Salazar will be among the minor league coaches the Braves reward with a September call-up. He’ll get the sentimental vote, after all he’s been through since losing his left eye in a spring training accident, but that’s not why the decision was made.

“When we looked at the guys that who were deserving, he was one of them,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “He’s done a terrific job with that team.”

Salazar, who was hit by a Brian McCann foul ball in spring training, underwent multiple surgeries but joined Single-A Lynchburg by its home opener and has managed the Hillcats throughout the season. They were 58-74 entering Wednesday but he’s guided the development of multiple top prospects from the 2010 draft.

Salazar will join the Atlanta Braves once Lynchburg’s season ends on Sept. 5 and remain with the club for a week. Typically the Braves rotate minor league coaches for one week each in September.

The Braves haven’t announced who their first player call-ups will be, but they are expected to start with a couple when rosters expand Thursday, possibly a reliever such as Anthony Varvaro or Cory Gearrin.

The Braves will add more players as Triple-A Gwinnett’s season wraps up, including both Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado. One of those top prospects is expected to start the second game of the Braves doubleheader against the Mets on Sept. 8.

I don’t know. This guy doesn’t pass the eyeball test.

(Hope Luis enjoys his time up with the big club.)

Great news for a great guy. I bet nobody’s happier than McCann to have him in the dugout for the stretch run. Thankfully he’s still with us and still coaching our next generation of braves talent.

Najeh: That joke wasn’t a joke; it was a very inappropriate comment about a fine man who has suffered an injury with which almost no one could cope as well as he has. Shameful. What were you thinking. And anyone who supports such a comment also is way off base. Don’t make light of another’s suffering!!

Some people take things a little too serious.

Salazar is one tough dude. Coach Salazar would be safe in the dugout right now with the way McCann is hitting..

0 for 20 is it?

Pinball: Did Palin say something? If so, I second your thought. If you mistook me for Palin, you couldn’t be further off the mark. And, by the way, she is way more popular in the lower 48 than she is here. We got too much of a dose.

I know it’s all in fun, but I agree with Alaska, u don’t make fun of someone losing an eye. Put yourself in that position and think about how scary it is to think about the possibility of losing the other eye for some bizarre reason.

I appreciate everything Coach Salazar has gone thru this year as well as what he has done as a manager.

Glad Luis got the call. He deserves it. He sounds like a class act and a good coach. Enjoyed when he played for the Pads back in the day, too.

Does Coach Salazar believe in an Eye for an Eye? Better watch out McCann!
