Adding Matt Diaz is the right-handed bat the Braves have needed since they broke Spring Training without Joe Mather (who played himself out of a job).
Actually it’s the RH bat we’ve needed since we decided we couldn’t afford some guy named Matt Diaz. Thanks, Pirates for paying most of his salary this year, and some of his salary next year!

Another SHUTOUT for the Phillies staff – Cliff Lee – 8 and 2/3 then Madson 1/3 inning.

Yesterday, Halladay went 7 shutout innings in a 9-0 blowout

On Monday, Hamels fresh off the D/L was held to 6 innings and only 1 run ( which was tainted as Hunter Pence fell down on a routine fly ball)

And all these pitching gems by the 3 Cy Young candidates against the NL’s highest scoring team.

One more game to go in this 4 game series and Phils will send the rookie phenom to the mound – Vance Worley – 9 wins vs 1 loss and a 2.60 ERA

I dont know if it has been noted – but Derek Lowe was not the only pitcher to hit his first career HR today. Jake Westbrook did so too. He is only 33 and has had only 95 PAs in his career (since he was a n AL guy till last year).

noliee

1. The transaction must be completed within six months of being announced (AKA the player has to be named).

2. The player may not be an active Major Leaguer player during the interval between the trade and the date the player is named. As a result, PTBNLs are basically always minor league prospects–though sometimes a long-term major league DL player is the PTBNL.

brian

August 31st, 2011
10:38 pm

These are 2 good minor trades for the Braves. Diaz will help against lefties letting Heyward focus on righties to get his groove back.

Wilson at the least is a big upgrade over Lugo. Wilson may enjoy being back in the NL and push Gonzalez for playing time. With Pastornicky hurt and not ready at this time, Wilson was a low risk possible moderate reward type trade.

I think you will find that Wilson will be used a few times over the neat month to give Uggla and Alex a break as we approach postseason. Dan Uggla has played in 133 of the 135 games so far and Seabass has played in 129 of them.

Lugo was a SS with some pop a few years back. He was worth a gamble that he might catch a little lightning in a bottle. But, Jack Wilson is the better backup to have going into September.

Won’t hit much, if any better than Lugo. But will be a good glove to have if somebody goes down. Last year, that was the death of the Braves when we had to count on Conrad to do things he was not capable of doing well.

But I still take Conrad over when I need a hit four shore.

Ross, Conrad, Constanza, Hinske, Diaz, and Wilson is a great postseason bench. Really have four great pinch hitters with Hinske, Diaz, Conrad and Ross. Wish Fredi would consider using Ross as a pinch hitter in the postseason. Makes no sense that McCann pinch hits when Ross starts, but Ross never pinch hits when McCann starts. Even Constanza might be a decent enough pinch hitter, and certainly can be used as a pinch runner or for defense. Wilson really lets you pinch hit for Gonzalez with someone other than Wilson late in a tight game without losing anything on defense. Good move
