Eh, he’s OK…but yeah, not totally my type, either…
so, will kimbrel break rookie saves record tomorrow?
Wilson is primarily a SS- played 1232 career games there, versus 45 at 2nd.

The Phillies are a machine, man. Relentless.
I have seen the 2011 Atlanta Braves World Championship DVD and…
…Jack Wilson’s versatility is one of the major keys to our championship run.
Chris from the Rock
Booooo!!! Phillies win.
I’ll take a .249 over a .136 for a backup SS.
August 31st, 201110:05 pm
but was he optimal in those 42 games at 2nd?
Try to contain yourself.
August 31st, 201110:07 pm
Oh, yeah, I just Googled him…posted my thoughts at the top of the page…
I’ll still stay with BMac.
Was it just me, or did I see the gun hit 100 on that last fastball from cK.
August 31st, 201110:08 pm
Jack Wilson on the DL is better than Julio Lugo.
Over all I think Frank Wren has done a excellent job of putting togather a great team, lets all give him a big THANK YOU.
August 31st, 201110:09 pm
I think that was the first 100 mph strike cK has thrown…the others were high and outside.
August 31st, 201110:11 pm
Adding Matt Diaz is the right-handed bat the Braves have needed since they broke Spring Training without Joe Mather (who played himself out of a job).
Actually it’s the RH bat we’ve needed since we decided we couldn’t afford some guy named Matt Diaz. Thanks, Pirates for paying most of his salary this year, and some of his salary next year!
Wilson’s UZR was 15 just two years ago, but just a respectable 2 this year.
August 31st, 201110:12 pm
Wilson is an excellent shortstop especially adept at going into the hole
Another SHUTOUT for the Phillies staff – Cliff Lee – 8 and 2/3 then Madson 1/3 inning.
Yesterday, Halladay went 7 shutout innings in a 9-0 blowout
On Monday, Hamels fresh off the D/L was held to 6 innings and only 1 run ( which was tainted as Hunter Pence fell down on a routine fly ball)
And all these pitching gems by the 3 Cy Young candidates against the NL’s highest scoring team.
One more game to go in this 4 game series and Phils will send the rookie phenom to the mound – Vance Worley – 9 wins vs 1 loss and a 2.60 ERA
Chris from the Rock, when accounting for his limited playing time, that 2 still pretty good, as far as UZR goes, anyway.
August 31st, 201110:13 pm
Oh well…that’s it for me. Great win, but I really hope BMac gets back on track starting like, tomorrow…I dunno, something just doesn’t look right…
See, Wren knew what he was doing all along
What a day,Diaz,Chipper, then Lowe, more Diaz , then more Lowe, then Kimbrel, wow Kimbrel, Followed by Wilson upgrade. The ole blog will have plenty of fodder the next 24 hrs.
August 31st, 201110:14 pm
I mentioned it a few pages ago but here’s the video…Braun faceplanting around 3rd.. yikes.
Ryan Braun Wants a Homer, Instead Eats Dirt
August 31st, 201110:15 pm
UZR is pretty meaningless over a single season or less. It’s creator says 3 to 5 years if it even has any meaning then.
August 31st, 201110:17 pm
The bench for the playoff roster is looking very strong with Ross, Hinske, Diaz, Wilson, Conrad and Constanza, assuming they do the wise thing and carry 11 pitchers.
August 31st, 201110:18 pm
Well that’s nice. Good bye, Lugo. Nice depth as we head down the stretch.
Agree with Ralph, there have been many times this year that I thought you didn’t really care about making this team better but I will eat crow now and add my Thanks for a job well done, if you would just get rid of Linebrink.
August 31st, 201110:20 pm
I can’t believe how mediocre this team has been offensively, and yet, 25 games over .500 with 27 games to play.
August 31st, 201110:21 pm
How about Lowe? Creeping towards a Game 3 start? We’ll see…..
August 31st, 201110:24 pm
DOWN ON THE FARM
D-BRAVES win 6-3. Stats really screwy, so no report.
August 31st, 201110:25 pm
Fredi’s genius is keeping us afloat. I guarantee you this because I can’t prove it, Bobby Cox would have ruined this team.
August 31st, 201110:26 pm
Who is WILSON?
August 31st, 201110:28 pm
Terrific defensively, same boat as Gonzalez offensively. Better back up option than Lugo and a nice solid bench/late inning defense addition as well.
August 31st, 2011
Who is WILSON?
The newest Braves backup inf.
August 31st, 201110:29 pm
“And all these pitching gems by the 3 Cy Young candidates against the NL’s highest scoring team.”
Not to worry, we have won 6 of 12 against them. That’s the party line any way.
So how much of the money are we picking up? It might amount to ~750K. Didnt realize we had that much left in the FO.
He is a former Pirate who used to give Braves fits when he robbed em of hits. He’s been in Seattle tho most recently.
August 31st, 201110:30 pm
richbrave.. Carroll just wrote a piece on him http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2011/08/31/braves-acquire-wilson-for-middle-infield/
I like the fact that Wren is not standing pat. Diaz, love that deal. Gives us a presence against lefties we have needed this year and Wilson, though not an offensive force is a better replacement than Lugo. I like both deals.
August 31st, 201110:31 pm
Crazy Bearded Tom Hanks knows a lot about Wilson.
August 31st, 201110:32 pm
that’s what good pitching does for you Efrim. always been the Braves backbone often to some real mediocre offensive teams.the reason that I thought the Phillies would be very very good this season.
Who else am I missing?
August 31st, 201110:34 pm
I like both deals too. with guys like this you never know b4 hand if they will work short term or not, but these guys have a good chance of being a help.
Wilson will be eligible for postseason play by virtue by being on the Braves roster as a disabled player before midnight Wednesday night. Since they won’t activate him until later in the week the Braves don’t have to make a corresponding move because rosters expand on Thursday.
Sneaky roster manipulations!
August 31st, 201110:35 pm
these two players to be named later. No chance they are named Constanza I hope!
Someone like Redmon or one of our 1B at AAA or AA would be more appropriate
sneaky snaky Frankie
August 31st, 201110:36 pm
JACK WILSON, wow! great bench get. Sayonara, JULIO! MATTY D picks right up where he left off, 2-3 as a BRAVE. Kudos to FW…….again!
August 31st, 201110:38 pm
I dont know if it has been noted – but Derek Lowe was not the only pitcher to hit his first career HR today. Jake Westbrook did so too. He is only 33 and has had only 95 PAs in his career (since he was a n AL guy till last year).
1. The transaction must be completed within six months of being announced (AKA the player has to be named).
2. The player may not be an active Major Leaguer player during the interval between the trade and the date the player is named. As a result, PTBNLs are basically always minor league prospects–though sometimes a long-term major league DL player is the PTBNL.
These are 2 good minor trades for the Braves. Diaz will help against lefties letting Heyward focus on righties to get his groove back.
Wilson at the least is a big upgrade over Lugo. Wilson may enjoy being back in the NL and push Gonzalez for playing time. With Pastornicky hurt and not ready at this time, Wilson was a low risk possible moderate reward type trade.
August 31st, 201110:39 pm
Thanx, CHRIS and KAT. I saw the article when I rebooted to the blog.
August 31st, 201110:40 pm
those rules I posted leave out Constanza as the PTBNL brian

Wilson at the least is a big upgrade over Lugo. Wilson may enjoy being back in the NL and push Gonzalez for playing time.
I think you will find that Wilson will be used a few times over the neat month to give Uggla and Alex a break as we approach postseason. Dan Uggla has played in 133 of the 135 games so far and Seabass has played in 129 of them.
Lugo was a SS with some pop a few years back. He was worth a gamble that he might catch a little lightning in a bottle. But, Jack Wilson is the better backup to have going into September.
Won’t hit much, if any better than Lugo. But will be a good glove to have if somebody goes down. Last year, that was the death of the Braves when we had to count on Conrad to do things he was not capable of doing well.
But I still take Conrad over when I need a hit four shore.
Without much goin’ on down in the minors, I’m outta’ here. Cleaning up storm damage is killing me. Some actual work for a change. NYTOL!
offensively the braves are really living the longball.
August 31st, 201110:44 pm
Jack should get a standing O too since he is basically the same player as Gonzo.
I wonder if Matty got one today.
Excellent example of what Matty D can to to lefthanders. He has to work on his high jump some more tho.
I’ll bet he bent over and kissed the tarmac when he landed at Hartsfield. Welcome home, o wayward son.
Congrats to Lowe on the W, but most of all for the homerun. Great to be able to finally add that to your baseball resume. Everyone needs at least one in their career, right?
And, a big CONGRATS to Mr. Closing Machine. Great, great rookie record to put in the books.
Thanks for the game story, DOB
August 31st, 201110:45 pm
Any chance the PTBNL involves sending Halladay to the Mariners in a 3-way deal?
August 31st, 201110:46 pm
No way does Wilson get significant time at SS, short of resting Gonzo for the stretch run. No way.
August 31st, 201110:48 pm
Now Lowe is tied with Duane Kuiper for career homers…..
August 31st, 201110:49 pm
Nice outing by Lowe. Here’s to hoping that it’s the start of another stellar September run for him. If he pitches like that, along with Hudson and Beachy, things will be alright.
As cool as the Lowe HR was, the hustle of Dan Uggla was the offensive gem of the night. Dude always busts it down the line.
But I still take Conrad over when I need a hit four shore
Is this the new terminology for Grand Slam?
jaysonst Jayson Stark
Great break for Jack Wilson to get traded to #Braves. His 1,313 G w/out reaching postseason 3rd among active players (behind Dunn & V Wells)
August 31st, 201110:50 pm
Craig Wilson & Jorge Campillo also added to that list of former Mariners.
August 31st, 201110:51 pm
Hell, let’s get Dunn and Wells and have a party!
August 31st, 201110:54 pm
At least we’ll know who to blame if we miss the postseason.
August 31st, 201110:55 pm
we had the group of Brooks and Dunn once. were their country parties then?

August 31st, 201110:56 pm
Great bench now.
So they are now fineing prostitutes in Germany if they don’t have a “ticket” that allows them to do their trades. 6 Euro’s, with no limit per night??
Now, that’d be a good way for the big cities to improve their revenue……..
August 31st, 201110:57 pm
DS1 – watch it with your liberal drivel…
Attendance at Turner Field tonight…20,687 (41.6% full). Considering ATL has a wild card team who might even have a chance to advance to lose to the Phillies in the postseason (and is a market with a metro population bigger than most MLB markets), that’s really sad. Next time one of the Braves “fans” complains about payroll, take a look in the mirror…
Can you see Adam and Vernon doing the “Boot Scoot Boogie?”
August 31st, 201110:58 pm
This years nominees for the Cody Ross Award: Jack Wilson and Matt Diaz.
August 31st, 201110:59 pm
Perhaps, if the Braves had brokered a deal with the Dodgers, they could have extended the season until it was nearly time to go Carolling. Alas, we now have signed someone to challenge the Hinske charm–a decade of post-season non-appearance versus a half-decade of post-season appearances.
August 31st, 201111:00 pm
I’m converting! Going to “loose” my job so I can go on unemployment for 99 months! And where do I go for that fried chicken and RC Cola food stamps?
(for those unfortunately out of work, please don’t think I am disparaging truly unfortunate folks……as I have been there in the past myself)
Thanks for the quotes link, DOB.
August 31st, 201111:01 pm
Maybe I could get on Darryl Hannah’s BFF list???
Tonight’s game lasted 2:12, five minutes shorter than ATL’s previous shortest game this season. We like.

This years nominees for the Cody Ross Award: Jack Wilson and Matt Diaz.”
My money would be on Matt.
Darryl still getting it done…
August 31st, 201111:03 pm
Ross, Conrad, Constanza, Hinske, Diaz, and Wilson is a great postseason bench. Really have four great pinch hitters with Hinske, Diaz, Conrad and Ross. Wish Fredi would consider using Ross as a pinch hitter in the postseason. Makes no sense that McCann pinch hits when Ross starts, but Ross never pinch hits when McCann starts. Even Constanza might be a decent enough pinch hitter, and certainly can be used as a pinch runner or for defense. Wilson really lets you pinch hit for Gonzalez with someone other than Wilson late in a tight game without losing anything on defense. Good move
August 31st, 201111:04 pm
Brian Kenny just announced on his radio show he is leaving ESPN to be the main host at MLB Network.
Brian is good, but, on the other hand, this might make Shaun very happy…
August 31st, 201111:05 pm
Braveheart–I agree. The bench is looking much better after today. My hope is that with the expanded roster, Ross can become another RH bat off the bench. Regardless, feel like some missing depth is now there.
How we gonna do with Jurrjens and Hanson on the shelf??? (assuming JJ doesn’t get his act back together….)
Will Huddy, Lowe, Beachy and Minor be enough?
Secretly, I am hoping BOTH Hanson and Jurrjens comes back.
August 31st, 201111:08 pm
Kimbrel’s past 34 appearances: 33-2/3 IP, 0 R, 13 H, 10 BB, 59 K, 23-of-23 saves.
Cliff Lee’s 34-inning scoreless streak earlier is longest in majors this season.

WW, happy college football eve.
August 31st, 201111:11 pm
“WW, happy college football eve.”
Actually, not a great eve here. I live just across the river from the Rutgers stadium. They were testing lights and PA system much of the night. Heard many a faux announcement.
another great night at the ballyard…not only a win a milestone by Chipper & kimbrel plus Lowe’s first HR.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
