Hillbilly – Yep, glad to see that it was only some bloggers here that handed it all to the Phillies last winter when they signed Lee and not the Braves’ players.
I have been wondering if there’s actually a chance that McLouth is the one released to create a 40-man roster spot for Jack Wilson (on Saturday). McLouth hasnt even started baseball-related activities and after that will surely need a couple of weeks to ramp-up to game speed. That leaves him a week or so of the regular season. He is way behind on the depth charts for CF and LF. Would it be too risky to release him?
SB – Not at this point it wouldn’t. Nate’s only due another mil or so to end the season and then the buy out of his option – all of which at this point they’ll have to pay him, anyway, whether or not he plays
I think it is only if you would go with him over Constanza in the event of an injury to Bourn. And even then, if Bourn were injured, you would have no back-up CFer. Interesting question as to how deep the depth chart should be.
SB – Not sure on any of this stuff – it can get technical as all hell – but isn’t the time to buy out or exercise an option after the season ends (including post season play)?
As long as the Braves, Brewers, and recently Diamondbacks keep playing good ball and putting pressure on the Phils to continue winning (otherwise, they might lose the division or home-field throughout), this stretch of no-days-off may be very detrimental going into the playoffs.
If the Phils wrap up the division/best record with, say, two weeks to go, it won’t matter how many days in a row they play, since they can play their starters as if they had regular days off.
Yup, Snot. That’s why I thought it may be him, plus that person in the pic has a young child like tiger and the person that runs the Braves Love blog was sitting in RF and I think that’s where tiger sits too.
That’s wild that the Fillies have no more days off! How many rainouts are they making up, or did they only have one day off in September to start with? Yikes…
The Phillies have a make-up double header on the 15th (Marlins) their only originally scheduled off day, and the 20th (Nats) for another rainout. They will have 8 games in 6 days. They’ll throw Kendrick and a AAA pitcher to get them through. I don’t see them straining the staff at all.
Not to hate on McClouth, but I would have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about dropping him. I think I had forgotten about him to tell the truth. I was assuming he’d never play for the Braves again. I guess his contract could be a problem huh? When does it run out?

Keep in mind the Phillies play 4 games in Milwaukee after they play the Braves. No cakewalk, although that series will be Hamels, Halladay, Lee, then Worley. The Braves get Lee, Worley, and Oswalt.
The season ends on September 28 (Wednesday) and the playoffs start the 30th (Friday). So the Phils will have one day off between now and the first NLDS game.
The Phillies’ rotation is racking up some IP. Halladay and Lee will exceed 200 IP their next starts. Hamels has thrown 178 and just got off of the DL.
Oswalt has few IP, but has been injured pretty much throughout the season.
Worley is up to 98IP and has exceeded 112 IP one time a couple years ago and is only 23 – still subject to the Verducci effect.
Bastardo has been lights out all year in the pen, but has appeared in a lot of games and his ERA has risen by .50 something in the past couple of weeks.
Remember how much hand-wringing there was over how Fredi would know to stop playing the hot hand? Apparently he handled it quite well when he inserted Diaz in to face Lannan relegating Georgie to PH and PR duties for now. Not too shabby.
The irony cracks me up. This guy’s name is Bastardo and it matches up perfectly with how i feel when the sucker comes out to pitch against the braves. Especially considering how good he is. He’s like a fictional villain created to fill the role in my brain. Does that make sense to anybody else?
I like the Phils pitching staff 1-12. Madsen, Bastardo and Stutes is a underrated back end, and in the playoffs, if they decide to use Oswalt instead of Worley as a #4 starter, that only makes their pen better. Worley looks like a reliever to me long term, anyway.
Yeah. I think the Phillies having more games left than days off isn’t that big a deal at this point, unfortunately for us Braves fans. They have a big enough lead and it’s September so they are going to be able to rest guys. That could all change if they play awfully and the Braves go on a tear in the next couple of weeks but I think that’s unlikely; not so much that the Braves won’t go on a tear but that the Phillies will lose 8 of 10 or something like that.
That said, with both teams at full strength and everyone playing up to their capabilities, I don’t think there is much separation between the two teams as their win-loss records indicate.
Am I the only one who thinks the Phillies will keep on winning despite the 33 games in 31 days thing? Have they lost more than 2 in a row all season?
Any hopes of them fading in the playoffs due to this crazy September schedule won’t matter much to the Braves as they Phillies won’t play the Braves in round 1. The way the playoffs work, with so many off-days and breaks, my guess is that they’ll be in decent shape come round 2. Of course the Braves will be as well, but I’m certainly not counting on the Phillies to be tired going into October.
If the Braves want to win the division the path is clear. They have to win at least 4-5 of the remaining games against the Phillies. Anything less and I don’t think they stand a chance.
Freddie Freeman had 3 walks in all of August. This combined with his lowish average has given him the worst monthly OBP for the season – .310.
He hasnt had a 2B since Aug 5th. He has 6 extra-base hits in the entire month. The long season might be catching up to him a bit. The 3 days-off might help turn him around a little, but I wouldnt mind seeing Hinske get a few more starts this month.

They keep on winning, period. Having really good starting pitching allows this. Just like the Braves. Phillies are a tick better because of the trio up front. They are a tick better than everyone because of those three.

Yeah, i feel like there’s a temptation to start reaching and looking for a weakness with the Phillies. They ain’t got none. You gotta put your big boy pants on and take the Post Season from the Phillies, or it’s theirs. Makes it fun though. If you beat the Phillies, you’ve beaten somebody. That goes for any team in baseball as far as i’m concerned.

No one ever thought Robert wasn’t an intelligent blogger either, but he just couldn’t stop with the continuing rants about Bobby Cox. The Phillies actually lost 4 in row twice this season. But there are only two teams in MLB that haven’t been swept in a 3 or 4 game series, and that would be the Braves and Phillies.
Efrim, what Robot and PL provided, to me anyway, was ample scroll by conditioning for future use. I can see how this one has been deteriorating to where I’ll have to engage the scroll-by function again.
Seems to me Shaun, that you get off on…
first, taking an edgy, original position on something that you know will rile people
then, refusing to let it go now matter what.
If that’s not the case, then i don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to play well with other.
Just seems to be purposeful continual friction? Would you deny that?
No, I’m being serious. There was this issue like last year about the Braves not having any black players. I think Heyward was the only one, or it may have been just before he came up. Now all of a sudden you have Bourn and Constanza playing, who are in fact black.
Hugo, I don’t try to be edgy, confrontational or contrarian for the sake of it. There are just so many commonly-held views in baseball contrary to reason and evidence that are held merely because of tradition or because it’s been done this way or that way forever.
Yeah – Nothing contrary or confrontational about that stance and calling into question the intelligence of everyone who has the temerity to not agree with you, calling people antiquated, blind, shortsighted or flat earther’s because they were brought up differently or just don’t care to delve into irrelevancies or idiotic comparison posed just to garner a rise from posters. .

It’s too bad we can’t run the blog in a similar fashion to the Braves organization.
I’m fairly certain that’s racist.

In the last ten years, the team with the best record in the National League, made it to the World Series one time.
Anything can (and usually does) happen in the postseason.

No, I’m being serious. There was this issue like last year about the Braves not having any black players. I think Heyward was the only one, or it may have been just before he came up. Now all of a sudden you have Bourn and Constanza playing, who are in fact black.

If I can do it, I know you can.

Hugo, I don’t try to be edgy, confrontational or contrarian for the sake of it. There are just so many commonly-held views in baseball contrary to reason and evidence that are held merely because of tradition or because it’s been done this way or that way forever.

Stupid thing about Worley is that he goes deep into games – just like their other starters. Keeps their BP fresh.

Yeah – Nothing contrary or confrontational about that stance and calling into question the intelligence of everyone who has the temerity to not agree with you, calling people antiquated, blind, shortsighted or flat earther’s because they were brought up differently or just don’t care to delve into irrelevancies or idiotic comparison posed just to garner a rise from posters. .
