I think there is some confusion about the meaning of the word “regress.” Regress just means going back to the previous. A good player having a down year can regress to his norms, which would mean he improved. “Decline” and “regress” are not synonyms, folks.

Efrim, I think Cain is a decent number 2, a good number 3 and a great number 4. Over his career, Cain has been a better strikeout pitcher and a better control pitcher than Jurrjens.
Fair enough, but your standards are higher than mine. I think I’d probably take about ten guys over Cain in the NL.

You name it, MD is better.

Efrim, yeah, I think my standards are high. I’m not looking at just one year. For example, with aces or number 1’s, I don’t think they are simply the top 30 pitchers. I think they are pitchers who would clearly be the best on almost any staff year-in, year-out. Same with 2’s. Same with 3’s. And so on. I think it’s possible for a team to have more than one number 1 or ace and it’s possible for a team to have none.

Dave need a movie review. Have you seen Horrible Bosses? Worth the theater, wait for DVD, wait for HBO, or avoid at all costs? Also is it true that the head University of Miami’s compliance office and Donna Shalala are in it? How do they still have jobs especially in this economy? There are a few thousand more qualified people out there.

raleighbravefan, right. Quite a few teams probably don’t have a true ace or number 1. But I don’t define ace as a guy who would be a number 1 in a bad rotation. I define ace as a pitcher who would be a clear number 1 on most pitching staffs in baseball, year-in, year-out; not just in a single, great season.

That is one plus. I mean when you know the guy is crazy at the plate, you at least go up there thinking…he will swing at everything and you hope for the best.
It’s quite calming.
Especially when he goes through spurts when he is hitting .400 or so and carrying the team against lefties.

So basically, if it weren’t for the Nats, our record over the past two seasons would have been comparable to the Phils?
I think this Nats thing goes beyond just the Washington Nationals all the way to the Expos, who also gave us fits throughout the ’90’s despite being one of the worst teams in baseball.

Lew, saying a player’s hitting skills aren’t “overly great” isn’t the same thing as saying he’s no good. Bourn isn’t “overly great” offensively but he’s still above average.
As far as McLouth, I believe if you look at the whole comment, you’ll see that I was responding to someone who pointed out that if the Braves re-sign Bourn, it could turn out like McLouth. McLouth at his peak is similar to Bourn at his peak, in terms of overall offensive value. Obviously they have different offensive skills and Bourn has much more defensive value, even at McLouth’s peak he was no Bourn defensively.
I know you aren’t going to look at the nuances of my comments and pay attention to context. You are going to do your best to oversimplify every comment of mine because of your dislike. So I’ll keep explaining for you, if necessary.

For instance, true number 1 starters. I don’t think just because there are 30 spots for number 1 starters, since there are 30 teams, means that the top 30 starters are true number 1’s. My definition of a true number 1 is a guy who would clearly be a number 1 on any team and would be the clear number 1 for several seasons (except in the case where maybe two of these type guys happen to pitch on the same team, like a Halladay and a Lee). So there are fewer than 30. And there are fewer than 30 number 2’s. And there are fewer than 30 number 3’s.

Hey DOB, finally listened to the Jeff Bridges album..Most of it is a bit slow for my preferences, but the song he sang on Colbert recently (what little bit of love can do) is catchy and will stick in your head and is worth some radio play. Wish there were more up tempo on it like that. It will probably take a few more times hrough to maybe appreciate the entire work.
Also listened to the new Cars release. Not the same magic as the 80’s but Ric Os wife is still HOT.
OK, now back to your regularly scheduled arguing.
PS I got nothing to add to the DIaz trade discussion. Will just see what happens.

Can there be another comment section or other far off place on the intertubes for Shaun and those who claim to hate him, but constantly and ceaselessly engage him. I don’t know who is right and I don’t care. The day after day of Shaun vs. Anti-Shaun is not enjoyable for me or most other fans, I would guess. Why do those of you that claim to be sickened by his comments engage him?
This makes no sense. But it cuts down my enjoyment of the blog, the comments and the community.
