Minor available in bullpen for two days

With the three-day layoff from Hurricane Irene and Monday’s scheduled off day, the Braves Mike Minor will have a 10-day break between starts when he returns to the mound Saturday against the Dodgers. As the fifth starter, he’s getting the longest layoff between starts.

The Braves considered sending Minor to the minor leagues for one tune-up start, but the Braves’ only minor league affiliate whose season ended in time to get Minor back on the major league roster by Saturday without the 10-day holdover was the rookie league Danville team. And the Braves couldn’t send Minor there by virtue of his accumulated service time.

So Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Minor would be available in the bullpen Tuesday and Wednesday nights against the Nationals and might get some work in there.

Brandon Beachy will be pitching on seven days’ rest when he faces the Dodgers on Friday. He plans to throw an extra bullpen between starts but said it won’t be an issue.

Beachy has thrown 114 1/3 innings this season, still under the 134 1/3 innings he threw last year in both the minors and majors. The Braves wanted to monitor Beachy’s innings this year, since he is so new to pitching – this is only his third full season on the mound. But Beachy said missing five weeks with an oblique injury might have saved them the trouble.

“I think that kind of took care of that, at least in my mind, hopefully in theirs too,” Beachy said. “I’m good.”

Should have let Minor start this game. JJ is not very good these days, no velocity, eminently hittable. I do not see him regaining his form in time to help in the post season. The truth is, after Hudson and Beachy, the Braves do not have any reliable or proven starters. They’d better get some of these guys ready.

And the Braves cannot pitch to opposing pitchers!!! Why is that???

Yeah, what wallypip said. After being the best 2 in the rotation first half of season, it’s turned real bad for JJ and Hanson. In general, Braves have played last 2 games like they couldn’t be less interested.

Still not sure why Fredi did not pinch hit for JJ last night in the bottom of the 6th. JJ led off and we went 3 up and 3 down. At the time, we needed some darn runs. I just feel like we quit at that point — strategically. I know the players nearly always give thier all, but it was obvious the way the Nats were teeing off on JJ that it was pointless to run him out there again. Just saying. Go Braves.

Freddie G is the one that quit on the team last night. When he left JJ in it as much as told everyone, players, fans and Nats that he had written the game off and accepted a loss. It seems he is afraid to hurt JJ’s feelings by taking him out. Makes you wonder who the manager is , JJ or Freddie. Must be JJ when he pitchers because FG sits on his backside and gives the games away. Check this fact out–seems to happen alot with JJ.

One more bit of concern. Where did FG learn to manage a pitching rotation. Why start a guy on 3 days rest, when you have others that are rested and ready to go. Keep this crap up and FG may get sent back to the Marlins.
