Had a bad experience with gin & tonic when I was in college. Hated gin ever since. Just eat the peanuts and wait until you get to San Francisco for some good seafood.
I predicted JJ would be knocked out by the 5th after watching the 1st inning., give him credit he lasted 6. Totally not the same pitcher as before the break. Little to no movement on his fastball of 87-89. No sink. Change up is nothing special and I’ve seen better slider/curves in highschool. Worst of all no location, location, location. We’re down to Huddy, Beachy, and Minor as far as dependability. If the playoffs started today, we’d be behind the 8 ball. No Hanson and no JJ. Sad.
The starting pitching and bullpen has carried this team all year. The offense has scored two runs in the past 17 innings.
It doesn’t matter how you pitch, if you don’t score you don’t win.
The Braves have fallen off in every significant offensive category.
From first in on base percentage a year ago to twelveth in 2011, sixth in average to twelveth, sixth in on base plus slugging to ninth in OPS.
They’ve also dropped from seventh in total hits to tenth. And to illustrate how many meaningless home runs they’ve hit this year, they are second in the NL right now compared with eleventh at the end of the 2010 season.
Jair Jurrjens had a case to be the All Star Game starter last month. He doesn’t need to apologize to anyone for showing signs of fatigue. He’s done as much as any of the Braves starters to help this team to the fifth best record in the majors.
The problem is an offense that has wildly underperformed from day one.
It just makes no sense to me to single out Jurrjens.
A blonde walks into a Best Buy store and goes over to one of the aisles and is greeted by a salesman. Pointing, she says “I want to buy that TV.”
The salesman says, “Sorry lady, but we don’t sell to dumb blondes.” She storms out of the store.
Only to return the next day, after dying her hair brown. She walks over to the same aisle, and pointing, tells the salesman, “I want to buy a TV!”
The salesman again says, “Sorry lady, but we don’t sell to dumb blondes.” She again storms out of the store.
Only to return the next day after dying her hair red! Going to the same aisle, she points and says: “I want to buy THAT TV!”
Again, the salesman says, “Sorry lady, but we don’t sell to dumb blondes.” She storms out of the store again!
Only to return a 4th day after having dyed her hair black and wearing a completely different outfit, trying her very best to conceal her identity! Pointing again, she states “I want to buy THAT TV!”
A 4th time, the salesman tells her, “Lady, we don’t sell to dumb blondes.” She almost blows a fuse, then asks the salesman, “How do you know I am a BLONDE!!!”
Glad to see our window to trade Jurrjens to make room for one of the young guns has now pretty much closed.
Nice showing tonight JJ. Good high school hitters will smash 87-90 mph belt high fastballs around the park. Time to shut him down because something isn’t right with him. If that knee is still bothering him, no sense in running him out there every 5th day.
Which is just great for the playoffs. That all but guarantees Derek Lowe will be in the post-season rotation.
With Viz and Minor already here, and Teheran and Delgado waiting in the wings, there is not a lot of top talent left in the Braves system. As someone pointed out on a previous blog, the Pirates spent more on their 2nd round pick than the Braves spent on their entire draft.
I guess I didn’t make myself clear. What I meant to say was, it seems every at bat he seems to either hit into a double play, or, pop up. Either way its an out usually leaving at least a couple of runner stranded in scoring position.

We die hard loyal Niners fans know how this will play out. N8, you’re worried about the Braves starting pitching in October?
They did their job last year against the Giants.
Wonder why we lost? Maybe because we couldn’t even make contact.
The first time the Braves even threatened the Giants in that series was when Melky grounded that ball to Sandoval in the 8th inning of Game 2, down 4-1. Sandoval couldn’t make the play and the Braves ended up scoring three runs to tie the game.
That was as big or bigger than Ankiel’s home run. Most of the time last season Melky strikes out.
They still are a team that fails to put the ball in play, cannot move runners, can’t go the other way, can’t get the job done with a chance to bring a run home on a sac fly, etc.
The pitching is hardly the largest concern entering a series against the Brewers.
bad enough not to start constanza the other blog on heywards start– i quote–Heyward was 4-for-15 in his career against Tuesday night’s Nationals starter Livan Hernandez with seven walks, two homers and a double. Jose Constanza was 1-for-2 against Hernandez” wrong . someone needs to check out the stats before printing them constanza was 2-3 off hernadez in the august 1st game not 1- for 2 please check the stats
OK. Let me rephrase that Wayne. Take Jurrjens with you, and Gonzo’s bats. He doesn’t use them anyhow. But you can leave him and his glove behind.
I think Fredi and Parrish should use some good old fashioned “shock therapy” with this lineup. When they take a fastball down the middle or swing at balls in the dirt, they get a little zap.
I figure like a dog crapping on the carpet, it will only take 2-3 days for a new approach at the plate to begin.
As a promotion, they could let fans bid on holding the button to help let out some frustration.
Cab, yep, sounds a lot like my wife’s family watching a 49ers game, particularly when they lose to the Falcons because of a hot-dogging defensive back. the Yorks are Californis’sequivalent of the Smith (also known as Clampett) family that owned the Falcons for so long.
You know Vazquez is an interesting case, and ilustrates exactly the value of velocity. We all know he was awesome in Atlanta in 2009. Last year it didn’t go well in NY, in large part because his fastball velocity when from 93mph to 88mph, he had an ERA over 5 in NY, and the first 2 months of this season were awful, at one point having an ERA over 7. and finishing the first half with an ERA of 5.23. During that rough stretch he lived around 90mph had a trmendously high whip and just didn’t look right, remember in ATL he had a career low WHIP and high strike out totals.
Since late June, Javy has improved to the point he is back to his old brilliant self, throwing a fastball around 92, 93 with good loaction. He had an amazing August, 40 innings, 40 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.45 in 6 starts. I seriously thought the Marlins were stupid by giving him 7 million following his 2010 season, but now with him pitching the way he is, I regret that statement.
JJ, is kind of experiencing the same thing as Javy, dropped 5 mph on his fastball all of the sudden and while his numbers look good, nobody can’t deny he is headed in the wrong dirrection, and the only way he can be succesful again is by regaining his velocity and health
I heard the radio guys talking about how many assists Gonzo has this year. I think they were saying he is leading the NL in that defensive category.
As you know, Gonzo will not be the reason we don’t win it all this year. If we are too go deep into the playoffs, Mitchell is right, it will be because the rest of our lineup has come out of it’s slumber.
I’ve been a Niners fan since I was about 10 years old. And the Yorks are not from California. And I actually like Jed. He obviously got his smarts from his uncle and not from his parents.
This team is done. Forget the playoffs. Even if the braves make it, it will be by default, because the Giants are terrible. There is no way this team wins in the first round. They continue to get their asses handed to them by the Mets, and the Nats. That is a disgrace for any team that thinks they are a contender for the N.L. pennant. Not only can this team not hit 40 yr old over the hill starters, they can’t hit anyone now, and the starting pitching is in shambles, when a legit playoff team like the phils would have their starting rotation dominating now. Hell, the braves don’t even have a starting rotation now.J.J. is toast, i don’t know how a guy could fall as fast as he has.He was the top pitcher in the N.L. at the all-star break as it relates to E.R.A., and now he is one of the worst starters in the N.L.Then you have Hanson that was one of the top 5 starters in E.R.A. in the N.L. at the break, and he is done for the year. Then you have Lowe the biggest free agent bust in the past 10 years or more, with an E.R.A. close to 5.00, and then you have Hudson, who got lite up like a xmas tree against the Mets, and the bottomline is the braves have no starter they can count on now. Compare that to the Phils who have 4 starters that are at the top of their game heading into the playoffs, and you can see how far away this team is. Arizona, the Brewers, and the Phils are so far above the braves now as it relates to pitching.Fredi the IDIIOT, should just call all the young arms up now, and let the team live or die with these young arms. But, as always, Wren the other part of the 3 stooges that run this franchise will insist that Lowe, Hudson, and J.J start in the playoffs if the team makes it, because they are veterans and because they are getting paid millions. Forget, about the young arms that are so much more talented, because the braves aren’t interested in winning, only looking good to liberty media that doesn’t even know what a MLB baseball team looks like. Wren doesn’t want to look like an IDIOT to liberty brass by not starting the pitchers that he paid multi-millions for, like Lowe, Hudson, and J.J., not to mention K.K. If the braves and the wonderful Wren had any BALLS, they would say the hell with these overthehill, wornout sinker ball junkies, and they would bring all the young arms up and see what happens. I can assure you these young arms could do no worse than Lowe,Hudson, and J.J. Thank GOD it’s football season,. Because this team is toast.
mitchell-”The pitching is hardly the largest concern entering a series against the Brewers.”
Mitchell, you’re just wrong, stop while you’re, well scratch that, you’re not ahead. We don’t want to get into a slugfest with them. In the playoffs pitching is everything, the team that pitches the best and plays defense will win. Bank on it. One of our key guys is hurt, and may not even be back this year effectively, and now JJ shows signs of a 2nd half collapse. Nah, why should anyone be concerned. Don’t worry be happy!
jiim what hindsight– constanza is a contact hitter doesn’t overswing — hernadez depends on guys overswinging not putting the ball in play constanza was 2- 3 the only time he swaw him august 1st
Cab, Bartolo (spelling) may have been a crook, but he knew how to build a football team. i am actually hoping Harbaugh brings them out of the wilderness. They also need a ne stadium, though. Candlestick is awful.
The combination of Bourn and Prado at the top of the order has not worked out too well. The first inning tonight was another example of Bourn not running at all, or not running until Prado was in a hole, and Freddi not playing hit aned run. Livan is almost always aaround the plate — a perfect pitcher to play hit and run with.
You left off the De Eddie may have had flaws, but he LOVED his team. And they loved him. His sister is just…[expletive deleted]. I don’t like her. The new stadium is apparently underway…we shall see. I always start the season with high hopes and they always end up getting heartlessly crushed very early in the season. If you really want to see me rant, come back here during a Niners game. I may be able to contain it during Braves games, but I am a little less controlled during football…
1991, I half way agree with you about the pitching.
Go ahead and let the young’uns pitch and at least they’ll
have some experience.
I know I wouldn’t throw JJ out there again.
I was infuriated with Glavine when he tried to blame JJ’s early problems
this game on rust. Hell, he’s been absolutely horrible since all star break.
No rust was involved.
Cab, too many gin and tonics plus this damned ipad have led me to not remember names and make way too many typos-the fact that i am basically senile has nothing to do with it. My wife, daughter, and son will not watch Falcons games with me. part of it is the marine corps language; part is the decibel level; and part is the crying and whining at the end of all too many games.
Who in the hell is making excuses ?! And you come on here everyday pretending to be a braves fan ! And we all know the truth ! For you to be cheering for the braves, then you make a stupid statement that they will win only 4 games the rest of the way, you are f**king Stupid as hell ! Take your fake A** Crocodile Tears, Cheering elsewhere !
Russell bell, you got a better idea you baseball idiot. Maybe you should join Fredi, Wren, and you can become the 3rd part of the 3 stooges. You obviously don’t know a damn thing about baseball, and especially starting pitching. You are a typical clown that only listens to Fredi and Wren. Here is a clue for you, come back with an intelligent rebuttal or stay away you clown.
I have often had to remind myself (or I did when I had DirecTV and actually got to watch my Niners every week) not to scream at the TV with the windows open. It never worked. I am very loud. And cursey…
Mitchell, I watched the series last year. You don’t need to tell me why we lost. But out of curiousity, what does what happened last year have to do with the upcoming playoffs?
Besides, the Brewers pitchers are arguably as good as the Giants were last year. And their lineup RAKES.
I’m not concerned about our pitching. I’m concerned about who Fredi chooses to pitch. If Hanson and Jurrjens don’t improve health wise? NEITHER of them should be in the post-season rotation. Which leaves us with Hudson (fine by me), Lowe (uh-oh), and Beachy (unknown – though I’m a big fan).
One could possibly argue that a rotation of Vizcaino, Delgado and Teheran might be more productive due to the unknown factor. Provided they didn’t melt down under the pressure.
I think our playoff success hinges on WHO Fredi chooses to start in that series. It has that bad feeling like when Smoltz was in the pen, where the starters are going to get rocked, leaving O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrel sitting on their hands in the bullpen to watch.
Our bullpen CAN and might be our biggest strength come playoff time, and might give us the advantage in most tight/close games. But if our starters can’t keep the game close to take advantage of our strength? It won’t matter how many runs we score.
Besides, you apparently missed the post where I stated Randy Wolf is going eat our lineup alive?
I’ve actually become much more worried about the rotation than the lineup based on Jurrjens and Hanson’s health and Lowe’s results. Pretty much our rotation in general since the AS break.
Since the AS break, the Braves starters have pitched 245.1 IP. They’ve allowed 123 ER (4.40 ERA). Here’s the breakdown:
First the ugly…..
Lowe: 44.1 IP, 27 ER, (5.48 ERA)
Jurrjens: 41.1 IP, 27 ER (5.87 ERA)
Hanson: 26.2 IP, 24 ER, (8.10 ERA)
Now the good…
Hudson: 63.2 IP, 16 ER (2.26 ERA)
Beachy: 47 IP, 18 ER (3.45 ERA)
Minor: 22.1 IP, 10 ER (4.03 ERA)
Delgado: 6 IP, 1 ER (1.50 ERA)
So Minor, Beachy and Delgado have combined to pitch 75.1 IP, while allowing 29 ER (3.46 ERA).
While the 3 “veterans” of the rotation not named Tim Hudson have combined to pitch 118.33 IP and have allowed 78 ER (5.93 ERA).
Sorry guys, if this keeps up, veteran experience or not, you go with the “hot hands” of the young guns in the playoffs with Hudson leading the way. Wost case scenario, you have them on a tight leash with a guy like Lowe sitting in the pen ready to come in and help. But I don’t see how you can’t consider starting Minor over Lowe if Hanson and JJ aren’t healthy. Fredi and Wren have to at least consider it, don’t they? Hell, maybe even one of the young flame throwers? Let Teheran come up playoff time and catch people off guard.
Smoltz, Glavine and Avery weren’t playoff experienced in 1991 either. Neither was Dontrelle Willis or Livan Hernandez for the Marlins in 97 or 03.
Good is good. But obviously we need to see who’s healthy come October. But man alive have those guys sucked since the break. Clearly they’re not healthy. Guys just don’t drop off like that. So I should rephrase that. The results have sucked. Hopefully they get better.
Cab, i actually cancelled the direct tv football package this year. my behavior after the Packers-Falcons game last year was inappropriate for an 8 year old, much less a 60plusser. If i do it again, I may lose my wife. m
I don’t get it now with my crappy crappy cable. But I think VJ is used to me by now. Last year was rough. There may have been a meltdown or two… (He’s a Giants fan, which makes it even worse. We actually got more of his team’s games here last year then Niners games. I was not happy)
