Power arms have served Braves well in late innings

CHICAGO – Here’s a luxury most teams could only dream of having: On Monday night the Braves rested closer Craig Kimbrel, he of the majors-leading 39 saves and 32-2/3-inning scoreless streak, and plugged in backup closer Jonny Venters.

Venters converted his fifth save while lowering his ERA to a majors-leading 1.10 and extending his own scoreless-innings streak to 22-2/3, second-longest active streak in the majors behind Kimbrel’s.

Uggla hit his 30th homer Monday, his fifth consecutive season with at least 30.

Uggla hit his 30th homer Monday, his fifth consecutive season with at least 30.

Oh, sure, Every Day Jonny made things interesting in his majors-leading 70th appearance — four more than any other pitcher — by walking the first two Cubs, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with none out and the Braves ahead 3-0.

Then Venters did what he does, striking out Carlos Pena and Marlon Byrd before Alfonso Soriano hit a grounder up the middle that Alex Gonzalez smothered before leaping to tag second base with his glove (that held the ball) to end the game.

The Braves had their third shutout during a five-game winning streak in which they’ve posted a 0.60 ERA, allowing three runs while hitting 10 homers and scored 17.

But back to the bullpen for a moment, and particularly Kimbrel and Venters.

After Venters put two runners on board before recording an out, one huge advantage of having such power arms in the bullpen once again came into play. Venters struck out the next two batters, preventing either runner from advancing.

No other team in the majors has been quite as good in late-and-close innings situations as the Braves this season – though the Giants have been close — and none has utilized the late-innings strikeout as effectively as Atlanta pitchers.

The Braves have a majors-best .214 opponents’ average and .308 opponents’ slugging percentage in late-and-close situations, and their 270 strikeouts (in 872 at-bats) in those situations is far and away the most in the majors.

San Francisco pitchers are next with 228 strikeouts in 902 at-bats in late-and-close situations, and the White Sox, with 203, are the only other team with as many as 200 strikeouts in those situations. Again, the Braves have 270.

Kimbrel alone has 85 strikeouts in close-and-late situations, while three major league TEAMS have 122 or fewer K’s in those situations.

Put another way, no other major league reliever has 85 strikeouts this season, period. (Kimbrel leads all relievers with 101 overall strikeouts.)

Since old Wrigley Field was not designed with night games and modern media deadlines in mind, us reporters with deadlines have to head down to the clubhouse before the last out is made, or get caught up in crowd-choked stadium ramps (there is no elevator from the pressbox; we go down the same way as everyone else at Wrigley, and we’re seated higher).

So you file a story that can stand – I filed mine with Braves winning and Venters getting his fifth save – or be tweaked by someone on the copy desk in the event of upheaval in the bottom of the ninth that changes everything.

When I mentioned to Venters that he’d made things interesting in the ninth, he smiled and said, “It was not intentional…. I felt good the whole time. They came up with an approach to see some pitches, and I couldn’t get one over to the first two guys.

Uggla believes Freeman could become "one of the best." As in, ever.

Uggla believes Freeman could become "one of the best." As in, ever.

“I felt good the whole time, though, just wasn’t making any pitches to start the inning off.”

In the end, he did what Jair Jurrjens had done all night: Wiggled out of a jam. The Cubs stranded at least two runners in six of nine innings, 15 baserunners stranded in all.

“We kind of pitched out of jams all night,” Venters said, “buckled down when we had to and came out with a big win.”

♣ Starters back on track: Jurrjens gave up eight hits and five walks in 6-1/3 innings Monday, but somehow no runs.

He was the third different Braves starter, to allow no runs in six or more innings in the past five games, along with Tim Hudson and Mike Minor. Derek Lowe also worked five scoreless innings in that stretch, while Brandon Beachy gave up one run in six innings, the only run allowed by a Braves starter during the five-game winning streak.

That’s one run allowed in 30-1/3 innings from a rotation that had struggled in recent weeks with the notable exception of Hudson, who’s been in fine form.

♣ Uggla’s spectacularly odd season: In the season when Dan Uggla had far and away the worst first half of his career, batting a majors-worst .173 through July 4, the second baseman has now ridden the longest power-hitting surge of his career to reach 30 homers faster than ever before.

Uggla hit his 30th homer Monday, a moon shot onto Waveland Avenue beyond left field at Wrigley. He did it in his 129th game, after not getting his 30th homer until September in his other previous 30-homer seasons from 2007-2010 with the Marlins.

Yeah, it’s the fastest I’ve ever gotten to 30,” said Uggla, who leads the majors in homers since the All-Star break (15) and homers in August (10).

“But I’ve been saying all year long, that’s why you play the full season. That’s why you keep working, stay positive, because you never know what can happen. I’ve been hot before, and good things happen when you’re feeling good and hitting the ball hard.”

Uggla has had five consecutive seasons with at least 30 homers, while no other second baseman in history has as many as four 30-homer seasons, period. Nevermind consecutively.

The four others who’ve had three 30-homer seasons while playing second base as their primary position: Rogers Hornsby, Jeff Kent, Alfonso Soriano and Chase Utley.

Going back to July 5, the day he began his Atlanta Braves-record 33-game hitting streak, Uggla has a .348 average in 42 games with 18 homers, 37 RBIs and a .412 OBP and .727 slugging percentage (1.139 OPS).

He has 15 homers and 31 RBIs in his past 32 games.

His in-season turnaround is as pronounced and dramatic as any I can remember, or that any that any of the others I’ve asked, including some who’ve been around the game a lot longer than me, could remember.

There are 17 other players with 25 or more homers in the majors this season, and Uggla has the lowest average (.232), OBP (.300) and OPS (.761) of any of them.

Eleven of the 17 have an OPS of .895 or higher. Fourteen have an OBP of at least .340.

But since the Fourth of July, no one has done more damage than Uggla.

A couple more curious notes about Uggla’s fifth 30-homer season:

Nineteen of his 30 homers have been with bases empty, the most solo shots in the majors this season but not far out of line with Uggla’s splits in the past.

Last season, 20 of his 33 homers came with bases empty. In 2009, it was 22 of 31. In 2008, 20 of 32. In 2007, 19 of his 31 homers were solo shots, and in 2006 it was 14 of 27, the closest he’s come to hitting as many homers with runners on base as without.

Just an FYI, Albert Pujols has hit 18 of his 31 homers this season with no one on base.

What I find more surprising than anything is that Uggla’s hit 13 of his 30 homers to start an inning. That’s three more than his previous high of 10 homers to lead off innings in each of the past two seasons.

BRAVES LINEUP

Heyward is hitting eighth tonight, the first time he's hit that low in the lineup.

♣ Uggla on Freeman: First baseman Freddie Freeman is just 21 years old, five years younger than Dan Uggla was in Uggla’s first season in the majors. And that’s just part of the reason Uggla has so much admiration for what the Braves rookie is accomplishing.

Freeman hit his 18th homer Monday, and since May 19 he’s hit .323 with a .374 OBP, .524 slugging percentage (.898 OPS) and 36 extra-base hits in 82 games. He has 11 homers and 36 RBIs in his past 53 games.

He’s tied with Uggla for fourth in the NL with 12 game-winning RBIs, behind Ryan Howard, Justin Upton and Prince Fielder.

I asked Uggla after last night’s game about Freeman, just generally speaking. This was his reply:

“Freddie’s a stud, man. The ceiling on this kid, if you look at him playing as long as 15 or 20 year … I mean, the numbers that this guy is going to put up – power, hits, RBIs, runs scored, average — any way you want to look at it, he’s going to do some special things.

“You watch this kid every day, and not even mentioning his defense, he’s going to be one of the best, if he stays healthy, I think to ever play the game.”

Mighty big statement about a guy who won’t turn 22 until next month. But it’s also tough to dispute. Freeman is so solid in his approach at the plate, so smooth and talented defensively, and has such physical skills, at 6-foot-4 and 240-some pounds, with the ability to do the splits while stretching for a throw.

Freeman is tied with Danny Espinosa for NL rookie lead with 18 homers, and leads NL rookies with 63 RBIs. His .293 average is also tied with Cubs rookie Darwin Barney for the lead among the league’s rookies.

♣ Tonight’s matchup: Braves lefty Mike Minor returns to Wrigley Field for the first time since he struck out 12 in six innings of his third major league start on Aug. 22, 2010. He went 3-0 in his first four starts, then went 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in his next 10 through June 16.

The rookie has made big strides lately, going 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA in his past four starts including six scoreless innings of four-hit ball Thursday against the Giants.

Tonight he’ll face Cubs righty Casey Coleman, who is 2-5 with a 7.43 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) this season. Michael Bourn is 2-for-2 against him, and Dan Uggla (0-for-2) is the only other active Brave who’s faced Coleman.

♣ OK, outta time. Let’s close with some classic R.E.M. You can hear it by clicking here. Sorry if I messed up any of the rather obtuse lyrics.

“7 CHINESE BROS.” by Michael Stipe

This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy, woman offers pull up a seat
Take in one symphony now, we’ve just begun to battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel, turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waited hold it to you in the colored come another

Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years to sleep away the pain
She will return, she will return

This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy, woman offers pull up a seat
Take in one symphony now, we’ve just begun to battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel, turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waded seven seas when the colored come another

Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years to sleep away the pain
She will return, she will return

This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy, woman offers pull up a chair
Take in one symphony now, I guess we lost that battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel, turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waded seven seas swimming colored come another

Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years the commune did reign
She will return, she will return

Greg Maddux from 1992-1998 – 191ERA+, 1.8 BB/9, 6.9 K/9, 0.4 HR/9.

Those were his best years, and interestingly enough, the period of time that he had his best strikeout rates.

Two aftershocks here in Central Virginia, both too weak to be felt, 2.2 and 1.8. LOUISA had exrensive damage to both the High School and Junior High; damaged enough for extended closure. One free-standing brick gable fell out of the end of a commercial building, and crushed three parked cars under it. There was no cinder-block backing only wood framing, and it appears the brick-work was not tied in to anything substantial. This was in TYSON’s Corner west of D.C. I know of no other damage at this time. The masonry seal between my chimneys and the house appears unbroken, but of course things tend to show up over time. So far so good. So GO BRAVES!

I gotta say, if that’s the extend of the major damage, sounds like they were lucky. “Retrofitting” is probably not something that folks back east think about, but maybe this quake will lead to safer buildings. Power arms? Be on the lookout for ELIECER CARDENAS, and MARK LAMM – A+, and CARLOS ‘WILD-thang’ PEREZ – A. Three reliefers which could produce a new set of dynamic arms in ATLANTA in a year or two. A sample of one is not statistically significant. If you could find 50 players in the history of MLB who had the “Dan Uggla Body Type” you might be able to start making some vague comparisons

abwright, I agree. I would like to see the list of players considered of similar body type to Uggla. I’ve only seen a list of one, Marcus Giles. I’d like to see that list be thorough and not pruned of players who might skew the results away from the hypothesis.

CAB:

I can see you are very circumspect regarding ‘quakes. As it should be, you living in the land of the trembling earth. The epicenter was indeed about 45 miles from my home. As I said, the earth did not roll. It actually bounced straight up and down. The quake source was very close to the surface, not several miles deep as they normally are here. Estimates have run from .1 to .6 of a mile below ground. The area struck was very rural however, so buildings were scattered and evidently only minimal effects occurred there.

Yesterday there was a tornado in the area, and IRENE is supposed to hit us Saturday. Dang, what’s a body to do but hide under the mattress? I mean……..this is not docile Ol’ Virginia. Yikes.

No warning. As Mother Nature goes, earthquakes are right up there, but there ain’t jack I can do. I don’t know how y’all deal with those week-in-advance hurricane advisories. Or that all-season-long tornados could form stuff. I don’t have to make CB’s Yosemite decision. Hey DOB, hope you read this:

I noticed the other day that Jose Constanza was running out a grounder to first base and he was running with an awkward motion. He would plant his feet facing outward (opposite of pidgeon-toed) and push off like this with each step.

I’m a college sprinter and we learn that running by planting and pushing off your feet straight up-and-down (in a straight line with your body, pointing to where you’re going) is the correct way to run.

Do you know if he always runs with an open strides? It’s a very unorthodox way if it is, and he would probably be able to run faster if he adjusts his feet positioning.

It must be awesome for all these rookies to get their “firsts”. FF has his first homer at Wrigley. He continues to astound with his picks over at first.

If the infielders would make better routine throws – aim for the middle of his chest, boys – he wouldn’t have to look quite so dramatic over there so much. Routine is good, but he can sure hoover most of the throws over there when he has too, and wishbone that stretch like nobody else playing this year.

And a” just FYI” comment. I heard Gammons say today that the Marlins are practically on bended knee, begging for Ozzie Guillen to come and coach them next year. Said Ozzie has another year on his contract, but the Sox are just not clicking for the past few seasons, not due too much to coaching, just the individual team members not doing the job as a team and no veteran leadership. Might be time for a change up there.

Haven’t read much of anything since getting home, but I see that Heyward is in the lineup. Any word on how long Constanza will be out? The way I see it, Constanza took Heyward’s job from him and now Heyward has a chance to do the same thing in return. Can he do it? I somehow doubt it. I thought for a couple of days there that he might be turning the corner, but now he’s back in the same rut. I wonder if anyone has approached him about shortening his swing in an effort to make more consistent contact, plus be able to hit to all fields? Yeah, it would cut down on the power numbers that we all envisioned him having, but the plain fact is that his power has been AWOL for awhile now. His swing is all or nothing and nothing is all we’ve been seeing.

Hinske needs more playing time but not at Freeman’s expense. It’s good to give FF a night off but that should not be the only time Hinske plays.
Why not put Hinkse in left & Constanza in right on one of the days Chipper sits and Prado plays third? We are going to need Hinske down the stretch more than we need Heyward in his present state.
If your excuse is Heyward need to work out of his funk, then left him do that up the road in Gwinnett.

I believe Costanza is the way to go as long as he is healthy. Heyward will be productive for us in the future but the Braves are playing for now and he is simply isn’t as productive as Georgie is at this time. The only thing I worry about now is Hanson and JJ. Hopefully Hanson will be o.k. because when he is on he reminds me of a young Smoltz. Wren deserves alot of credit for not trading any of the young pitching as they are needed much sooner than we anticipated. What a great year! As Keith Richards sings at the end of “Tumbling Dice” keep on rolling! Finally, to paraphrase the Rolling Stones-who DOB doesn’t play enough-”It’s only the Braves winning the World Series, but I like it” Go Braves!

Prado’s been the opposite of Frenchy to me because quite frankly he can’t stay healthy. Jeff had to be told to sit down, had a nice little streak going in games played as I recall. Prado and Heyward’s lack of production can largely be traced to various injuries. Frenchy just plain lost it.

Jose Constanza, 2011, first 87 plate appearances as a Brave:

I think the point is that their maybe is a reason for Prado’s struggles whereas Frenchy just seemed to lose it, no explanation once so ever. They seemed to try everything to fix him. There is good chance Prado if he can ever find consistent health can turn it around. With Frenchy that belief obviously ran out when they traded him or they just got tired of waiting.

Prado’s problem is that his offensive value is almost entirely tied into his batting average. While a .274 batting average is just fine for a player someone how can take a walk or absolutely crush a ball, it just isn’t good enough for him. He needs to be a .300+ hitter to be a productive offensive MLBer.

I’m good, cabraves. We are finally getting some answers on the med sit with my husband. Saw an infectious disease specialist today who thinks it probably is lyme disease and is going to go ahead and treat for that. The DH has extended the careers of many over there in the AL, and if it hadn’t been for the DH spot, some HOF’S wouldn’t have gotten to 3,000 hits, Sorry rich, that is a VERY dumb statement.

I feel so bad for the poor pitcher. The coach just left him out there. Poor kid was crying.

I’ve watched little league for a while now and I thought they encouraged large strike zones since the kids obviously don’t have the control yet. This ump doesn’t seem to follow that. They have pitch count rules but then you’re not calling strikes and they also put a limit on the kids pitch counts. Not flexible at all.

I have been worried about Hanson since the first time I saw him pitch. His current problem may have nothing to do with it but Tommy looks like he is throwing darts, always has. Where lots of pitchers look fluid and seem to be using legs, hips and torso all setting up the arm and follow through, Tommy looks like he’s all arm. Like I said, looks like he’s throwing darts. That equals more load on the arm, shoulder and elbow.

Watch Minor tossing tonight. Body turns, legs, torso, hips all setting up the arm. Tommy’s motion and delivery spells problems. Actually surprised Tommy went this long before having problems.

DOWN ON THE FARM

For those of you who might be thinking TODD REDMOND is ready for prime-time check this. Handed a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth, he promptly squanders it and ends up with a ND for the day’s work. Fortunately, the G-Men come through with 7.1 innings of one-hit, shutout ball with six walks and 10 punch-outs by four different reliefers [GEARRIN, HOOVER, CHAPMAN, and RICHARDSON. DUSTY gets the win [1-0, 6.00] as the last man standing.

Surprisingly few hits [7] with LF WILKIN CASTILLO’s [.272 BA] fourth homer plating three BRAVES [33] being the big blow, but not the deciding run. MATT YOUNG’s [.264 BA] walk-off ground force-out with one out and the bases loaded in the 13th became the deciding offensive event. Run scores, BRAVES win.

Nate needs aggressive treatment to finally fix his bods and not some half ass remidy.PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE YOU BUY OUT HIS OPTION. HE MAY BE THE MAN NEXT YEAR.
3. Tommy Hanson – we’re a month away from playoffs. Find out if Hanson can be ready in 5 weeks. If not look to Viz, Tehe or Delgado

We’ve got 6 weeks to get the roster together. Have it done in a week so no one will feel rushed or any other pressure.

I don’t think very many fans actualy hate Jason Heyward, they are just very frustrated with his performance and lack of improvement as a ball player. Many of the ones who have been the most critical have also voiced support for him. Hate is a very strong emotion and it would take more than a baseball player’s poor performance to evoke it from a sane and rational person. I just don’t think it’s a fair term to throw on people that you disagree with.

I really like Heyward and have hope for him. But, I can no longer reasonably defend his performance this season. I don’t know why he’s struggled so much. I’m not a scout so I’m not really qualified to analyze his stance or his swing, but a lot of people who get paid to do this stuff believe his skill set will translate to very strong results. I have no choice but to believe them. As to his BABIP, I do believe he’s been tremendously unlucky, but even with a league average BABIP, he would not be where we all expected and hoped he would be this year. I do hope he can improve for the stretch run, though, as this team will need him over the next 60 days.

That’s the thing BAS, we don’t klnow if Nate played the last two years with that hernia and you just can’t do anything that requires max effort. I had the operation he needed where they sew into you abdomen something similar to what a screen is made like. Of course it’s something that will grow into your muscle tissue and make it strong as your abdomen was before. It’s a difficult surgery to recovery from but you can be like new. AND NATE when he was a Pirate was a player we could use.

Face it, he couldn’t run full speed, he couldn’t throw full speed, he was trying to make contact not hit for power. That 50 SB season can still happen and all the things that go with a healthy Nate.

P B Orr – no one is saying the Tex trade was a winner. It was one of the all time worst trades. If the Braves win the World Series then it is even but that trade set us back ages, but the trade is in the past. no reason to revisit it all the time. The Braves have done a superb job rebuilding there farm through the draft and foreign signees. The Braves also have shown they have learned from that trade this trade deadline.

The Tex trade was like the Hershel Walker trade for the Cowboys. If Minnesota wins, or goes to the Super Bowl great. They didn’t and in the process helped build the Cowboys for their championship runs just as the Braves helped Texas get to the World Series last year as much as anybody

“Chipper might never score another run in his career hitting 6th.”

Not if he runs like he did running out that ground ball up the middle. Hell, he’ll be lucky to see 2B again. :-)

Nice to see Heyward step up and swing the stick, especially taking balls the other way. Not so nice to see his play in RF.

Everybody ragging on him for the bloop bad hop on Ramirez’s hit in the 9th, but the worse play imo, was allowing both runners to tag up on that fly ball in the inning the Cubs scored their 4 runs.

One could say in the end it wouldn’t have mattered because Ramirez doubled them in anyhow. And then followed up by the Gonzo error, it really didn’t hurt anything. But those are plays that WILL hurt come October.

Gotta play smarter than that.

Also have to assume that if Freeman is at 1B, he snags that throw from Gonzo. So for whatever that’s worth, I’m not really that bothered by that play.

We know that eventually they will give up a run here or there. But for now, we just enjoy the ride!

Many folks on the blog have been saying that a Braves team with Heyward hitting closer to what we think he is capable of will take the team farther into the post season than a slap hitter like Constanza. Not that I don’t appreciate Georgie, I certainly do.

I must admit that when Constanza tweaked his ankle I though it would be positive for Jason to be able to play for a couple of days with no fear of being pulled/benched the next day. (As opposed to when he homered in New York, only to sit the next day).

Well, whatever it was, he had a great game.

Welcome back, Jason!

August 24th, 2011

Our starting pitching has been a little inconsistent lately despite winning games for us. Seems the fifth and sixth innning is where things get a little unpredictable. I really don’t know who would be our starting rotation for the NLDS.

Right now only Beachy and Hudson are the guys in the rotation I’d be confident with going forward. With either Minor or JJ being the third starter. If JJ can keep improving then yeah we should be ok, but I just don’t know who you go with in this situation.

Heyward looks like he’s improving a lot lately. He’s been hitting much better over the last few games he’s played in. Still, when Jose is back you gotta play him, but Heyward is making strides, there is no doubt about it.

Giants are 6 outs away from becoming a tad irrelevant in the Wild Card race (if you get 10+ games back in WC/Division you become irrelevant until you show you can make a run and get yourself back in).

Coach (2011 Fredi G.a Go)

August 24th, 2011
12:53 am

Kodo’s to Heyward, the kid did good tonight. Grand slams are really sweet :)

The pitching held up as usual, we scored all five runs in one inning, stole a couple of bases but the defense kinda threw the ball around to much. Six wins in a row, the longest streak in the big leagues at the moment. Nine games up in the wild card and keeping the philthies within striking distance.

That’s all the good stuff.

Now for the bad news. I think Tommy is done for the season. In fact, he might even end up on the surgeons table. Big reds horrific lack of proper pitching mechanics has caught up with him already. All I can say is no matter what happens from here on out……kid, you had better learn how to properly throw a baseball off the mound. Otherwise we have already seen your best. Good luck selling insurance, cars, digging ditches or whatever else life offers :(

Sorry to hear it. Truth be told, if we live long enough, most of us go through those situations a few times in our lives.

I think sometimes it’d be easier to be the one who is sick vs being a caregiver.

I suspect your dad doesn’t want to think that he is making things difficult for the family. Not knowing the whole situation, I’d guess and say that your brother should probably stick with the schedule. To honor your dad’s wishes.

true coach, but I just don’t think he can change those mechanics enough. he has so many things wrong.First thing he would need to do is learn not to be a dart thrower. then use his legs more and change his end up to a less violent one. that could take a long time with no guarantee that he would still be an effective pitcher. not sure I remember any pitcher reinventing himself that much. we’ll see

Heath

August 24th, 2011
5:49 am

Magic numbers:

Philly (playoffs) = 18 (some combination of either 18 wins for Philly or 18 losses by the Giants). I think we can safely assume that will happen.

Philly (division) = 27 (same as above only when compared to Atlanta)

Atlanta (playoffs) = 23

Since SF is playing so poorly (Stl too) and the Phils/Braves playing so well… The Phillies might clinch a stiff spot by next weekend and the Braves just a few days after that.

Heath

August 24th, 2011
5:59 am

Statistical probability for playoffs:
Philly = 99.9% (division 95.4%)
Atlanta = 99.0% (WC 94.4%)

Philly is now Atlanta’s biggest competitor for the WC; SF and STL are almost completely out of the WC race

The Phillies destroyed the Mutts last night without Howard, Rollins or Ruiz in the lineup and a rookie pitcher on the mound. It doesn’t seem to matter who takes the field for that team they just keep rolling along. Will the Mutts roll over like this for the Braves or will the Braves see the reincarnation of the Mets ‘86 team? Which usually seems to happen for some reason.
