Over the last couple of weeks the Braves and Phillies have shown the upstart Pirates and D-Backs what it’s like to play in the east and put them both into tailspins.
Don’t you think that not having the DH puts the NL at a slight disadvantage as far as playoffs and possibly interleague goes?
I actually disagree. I think it’s advantageous that the NL pitchers hit throughout the year and the AL guys don’t. Because when the interleague or play off games are at NL parks, that provides a much stronger advantage to the NL team than the DH does in AL parks.
Efrim, that makes it all better. Everyone knows the more people believe something, the more correct it becomes.
Of course not. Really just pointing out that Fredi doesn’t deserve ALL of the blame there. It was clearly something the front office felt was the right move.
Who even cares anymore. 3 for 4. OPS almost .750 in August.
Kid is back. It’s over. 2 for 4 tonight. Lock it up.
DS1…agreed. It’s not usual that a sport has such a rule dynamic that rarely comes into play all season long then is added at the most critical time. Best thing for a NL playoff team to do is have one bench player with power (in our case I like Hinske) to DH but we probably are at a small disadvantage. With that being said, you’d hope our pitchers in NL ballparks can help their team more than an AL pitcher with little practice all season. Could be a small bunt assignment that can lead to a win.
Regardless, it’s still odd in this day and age baseball hasn’t gone to one route or the other.
Is it possible that we like both ways for what they offer?
Sure. I could see that. Like a vacation. Every now and then it’s good to just stop thinking. Go numb in the head and tune into something that has no intellectually stimulating value like an AL baseball game. Some like to live this way perpetually. It’s why there are so many Yankee and Red Sox fans.
Y’all do realize that when Heyward comes back to his true form and starts to hit regularly, that the reason he did could well be that he was sat for a while and it forced him to make the needed adjustments or see what price he would pay in lack of playing time?
Interesting theory. I’m not sure it’s true, but it could be. Kinda like a bad guitar player practicing more. Does it make him anything but a bad guitar player?
But it’s possible.
Hey, don’t get me wrong, I like the NL game better. But the DH is not going away, and I suspect in another 10 years we will see it in both leagues.
Lock it up.
Yep. And in that time the team rested Heyward, allowed him to right his ship and be the productive player you claim is back (something which would have happened if he had been playing ~prove that wrong!) the team put in a guy who produced a higher WAR than Heyward has produced all season. It was the smart move.
Further to the NL advantage…….you are technically forcing the AL team to really tinker with their line-up. You either remove some power, or you make them shift a poor defensive player into the field. Luckily for the NL that means corner outfield or first base…..someone has to sit and come off the bench like the big boys in the NL.
The only trade dead line acquisition that has worked out any team is our pick up of Borne.. and we didn’t mortgage the future..
Wren is looking smarter and smarter.
DS1 – I agree. It does put the NL team at a disadvantage. The roster for the team would be different. You and I had brief discussion about this last week.
Not that I like the rule about the ASG determining home field in the WS, but what if it was extended to include what rules would be used – home and away?
I opened this can of worms because someone posted that some HOFers reached 3000 hits because of the DH. My complaint is that they probably wouldn’t have without it. Cheapens numbers and cheapens games.
And Shaun, even before you respond, I’d like to borrow a word form MikeinFl…”balonious”!
cab – Maybe, kind of, to a certain extent. The real disparity between the two leagues re: the DH is that in the AL they actually sign a player to professionally DH – usually one making a sizeable chunk of change- and when the NL uses it, they put a player from the bench in there.
It’s not just that NL pitchers can hit (although some are rather good), but things like being able to bunt (in theory anyways ) better than AL pitchers that might only take BP in spring training and during interleague against coaches. They will have a much harder time bunting a 95 mile an hour fastball than someone that does it every 5th day. Whereas We could use a guy like Chipper or Mac to DH and Hinske or Jason or Ross in the field and any of those guys are able to hit the ball with power to match most DHs. Obviously it’s just my belief
(Personally I hate the DH and wish the AL would get rid of it. Not that it’s going to happen, but it would be nice)
DOB- i cannot believe you, Fredi, among others, would rather have constanza in the line up than JHey. Hes not going to come out of a slump being a cheerleader, let him work through it. Weve seen some good signs the last few games. Enough to warrant him playing over Gregor Blanco.
DS1…much like our best mid-season addition…..Uggla, maybe we get a late year addition in Heyward. It sure wouldn’t be ideal, but perhaps Heyward or Constanza is in the field/DH to keep that speed that’s been helping us so much lately.
Just a thought? I’m more concerned with getting by Philly in a pitching dual than I am about the American League.
Folks, I am in an enviable position today. Got a drop top rental car, and a 3.5 hour drive ahead of me in some of the most beautiful country in these (or any) parts. I’m might try to check in around mid trip, but if not…………

I think part of the reason the braves performed so poorly in the playoffs in the 90s when they had the best, or at least one of the best teams is because they list their competitive edge. They routinely had the division won several weeks before the playoffs and coasted at the end of the season by resting players, etc.
Look, I like the idea of getting players enough rest to keep them fresh, but I don’t like the idea of resting them do much they become rusty. Give guys a little more time off than “normal” once you’re locked in (the braves are all but locked in to the WC at this point) but not to much so that the team can maintain it’s best play–which it currently is displaying.
I know he doesnt have the power numbers to compete with the other MVP candidates but doesnt Victorino deserve a little love for MVP given that when all others have been injured he has been the most consistent player on what looks like a 110 win team? He is hitting .313, playing great D, has decent power numbers and has a very good slugging % for a guy with his frame.
Jim Bowden (12:56 PM)
I think Ryan Howard is the Phillies MVP over Victorino
I actually like the DH and don’t really care about double switches, etc. that the NL beats its chest about. Why would I want to see pitchers hit and makes outs constantly? Throw a bat in there, and let’s see how National League pitchers ERA’s increase and K rates decrease.
I think that the Phillies’ MVP is their entire starting staff for keeping their bullpen innings to a minimum. That pen would be radically exposed and their record would suffer badly if not for the starters going an extra inning or two and keeping the pen out of the game..
Hard to get MVP of the league while playing for Philly……..cause with or without that one guy, they probably still win 100 ball games. Reality is that they had a team built for the playoffs and they will get there regardless.
Until Hudson, JJ and Beachy shut the door.
Wait a minute, that raises my question? Who’s our top 3 right now if playoffs started today (Shaun, yes I know, they don’t start today or i’d be wearing my new lucky Braves socks)?
To me the DH is like having the QB wearing a special red jersey during games that means you can’t touch him. The DH is like half a baseball player. For over a hundred years, you played the field, and you hit. That’s what baseball players did. Makes more logical sense to me.
I think that the Phillies’ MVP is their entire starting staff for keeping their bullpen innings to a minimum.
Not me. Victorino has been amazing this year: .314/.389/.551 154 OPS+ and great defense in center field. But it’s a fair point about their work horse starters. Obviously, the group as a whole has been more valuable….most starting pitching staffs are more valuable than one position player.
I’ll take my chances with Constanza over Heyward…..all day long. The speed dimension causes havoc out there much moreso than The Bust running into one…….once a month.
Why would I want to see pitchers hit and makes outs constantly? Throw a bat in there, and let’s see how National League pitchers ERA’s increase and K rates decrease
Why would any one want to see excellent defenders/weak hitters hit? Just have an offensive line and a defensive line. Through big bat up and down that line up and watch how well the pitchers pitch afterward. It’ll be so much fun watching 9 DH’s in a row. Playing both sides of the ball is over rated. 9 DH’s means we wouldn’t have to watch Seabass or Lugo step up to the plate ever again.
We Canadians need to stand out in the ballpark and make sure the Turner Field staff take numerous pictures in your game day giddy up! Whether that means looking like an idiot or just a kid in a candy store! haha
Jeffrey d- well played sir. I cant think of the word they use, but for arbitration cases, i guess, ‘track record’. JHey’s overall ability is much higher than constanza. I think Fredi did him right giving him the McLouth treatment. Take some pressure off. Just let him play,
Only time a closer will win if if no starters have great numbers. Halladay, Kershaw could end up with 18-20 wins, 200-plus strikeouts, 2.50 or lower ERAs. Can’t see Kimbrel swaying many voters away from voting for one of them at top of ballot.
By the end of the season Kimbrel will have more strikeouts than both those guys put together.
Yesterday I swore off of Shaun, but I’ve got to get involved in this…
MY OPINION…NL rules are FAR more entertaining because of the strategy aspect. This is why I reguard baseball a “thinking person’s” sport to follow. With no DH, much more decisions must be made concerning use of pitchers and pinch hitters.
And by the way, EVERYONE complains about long games. I find most AL games to be unending marathons. Check out the average time to play a NL game vs an AL game. I also like the idea of a pitcher being able to “help himself”. If he can’t, then shame on him.
For what it’s worth, I also don’t particularly like interleague play, either. I do expect the NL to eventually adapt the DH rule, much to my chagrin, because Bud Selig is a short-sighted moron.
The DH always seemed like something conceived in grammar school. You know like when the teacher made the slow fat kid play ball and we’d let him hit but have someone else run for him. I don’t dislike the idea of a DH, but if you want true baseball the 9 on the field are supposed to hit.
Hey, I got no problem with the crazy knee socks (I have a full drawer of crazy socks, albeit not of the knee length variety) but even I might have had to laugh at a guy in shorts and Braves knee highs. Then I might have jumped you and stolen them
Regarding the high socks issue: There is this extremely funny freewheeling show called “QI” chaired by the fantastic Stephen Fry which addresses that issue. Watch this:
If most guys are park-adjusted, and Victorino is frame-adjusted, shouldn’t we have iris-adjusted? Pretty well-known fact that eye-color does indeed affect night vision, thus, hitting at night. Shouldn’t the blue-eyed guys get a little bump for having to hit at night so much? Seems fair.
I admit to the fear that, once a player had been iris-adjusted and frame-adjusted and park-adjusted, the only semblance the final results might have to reality would be, well, none. Might have to bend in some fictional multiplier of some sort, just to make the final number intuitive.
I wonder if DOB realizes that @PayneBall is Shaun. His responses dont indicate that he knows he is dealing with someone with a track record in such arguments. Oh well.
Even though it’s a chain — albeit a small one — Geno’s East is still mighty good pizza. I’m not a big deep-dish fan, but when in Chicago, I’ll get it. And I like Geno’s East more than the much-lauded Lou Malnati’s, among the places in downtown area that are easy to get to. The sausage pizza at Geno’s East, thumb’s up.
However, I’d take Antico in Atlanta over any of them. Without question.
The scenery along Lake Shore Drive on my way back from Geno’s to my hotel — now that was really strong. On an 85-degree, sunny day….
JerseyGil – “DOB…Any News from MLB to move the Sunday Game to Saturday DH…Latest News from the Weather is Sunday will be Heavy Rain & winds…here (NJ) thru NY.”
Money play a major role in this too. The Saturday game is a FOX national game with a 4:10 start – making it very hard to work into a DH. It’s possible, but the Mets would have to give up a “gate”. Day – night DH are more common now with a 1:00 gate and a 7pm. Money, money , money.
Yeah, eye of the storm headed for NYC. We’re going to get destroyed in Central CT too.
Not looking good for my friends at the Outer Banks. Evacuating Ocracoke, beginning today. It might yet steer east, but they’ll still get hammered, just a matter of how much.
Great idea. Expand the roster and have a defensive team to play the field and 9 DHers.
It’ll be awesome. Really look forward to watching all those DH’s lumber up to the plate. Hacking away. I bet HR’s and K’s go through the roof. That’s what fans want to see. Pitchers strike guys out. No weak hitter. Lots of long ball. That’s just so exciting.
You know, it may be even better if we get rid of defenders all together and just go with a home run derby style game. Pitchers throw the ball up there, if it’s hit out, it’s a run. If not, an out. The team could save some money on grounds keeping. They wouldn’t need to worry about wet fields or mowing the grass. They could have special events where the local mongoloids get to run around and collect the non-HR balls, dig holes in the field… good times all around.
I don’t control the lineup so I am not going to post well over 1000 posts about Constanza and Heyward. I like them both and will cheer whomever is in the BRAVES lineup
Shaun – If you want to run a ML team, you’d better go get ultra rich. No way you’ll ever convince people who are actually running the sport that you even know your behind from the proverbial hole in the ground, much less convince them your way is right and their’s is not.
Lew, The Braves apparently can’t even convince themselves on what to do about players playing below expectations. They handle Uggla and Prado one way and Heyward a different way. It’s a jumbled up mess of inconsistency.
SS AL SIMMONS [.309 BA] 2-6, 1 R, 1 SO. His BA has been in a steady ascent since mid-season.
3B JOE LEONARD [.268 BA] 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B [27], 3 RBI [62], 2 SO. Looks like he’s fixed that hole in his swing. He’s starting to accelerate at the plate.
C CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT [.265 BA] 3-6, 2 RBI [17]. Ditto in the hitting department. He’s moving back into prospect territory. PB [4].
ANDY RUSSELL [4.89 ERA] 3.0 IP, 2 H, zeros, 0 BB, 1 SO. Great middle relief stint! Probably saved the game.
JEREMY HAYNES [6.23 ERA] 1.1 IP, zeros, 2 BB, 0 SO. Good job!
RYAN BUCHTER [2-5, 3.62 ERA] 2.2 IP, no-hit, shutout ball, 1 BB, 5 SO. Finishes the third of three outstanding relief outings by ‘CATS pitching staff.
ROME
Squashes the SAND-GNATS 6-2.
Lead-off SS MATT LIPKA [.240 BA] 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B [17], 2 RBI [34]. Note to the SAL.
You better adapt because whatever ailed MATT’s swing has been corrected….finally.
1B ‘Big Jim’ GATTIS [.326 BA] 2-4, 1 RBI [63]. Mr. consistancy…..consistantly good, that is.
DH ED SALCEDO [.254 BA] 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B [26], 1 RBI [58]. That O’fer night with his 41st error may have been ED’s wake-up call. Been striking the ball well since.
3B MATT WEAVER [.279 BA] 1-3, 2 RBI [17].
WILLIE KEMPF [4-3, 3.81 ERA] 6.1 IP, 9 H, 1 HR, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 7 SO. One danged pitch ruins an otherwise outstanding outing for soph WILLIE. Strive for perfection young man.
Wow. Handling one player differently than another. Imagine. It’s almost like the management thinks they know the players, and have some idea as to what their problems are, and how to go about fixing them while maximizing wins on the field. Idiots.
Kendrick stinks, although he always owns us. I keep waiting for Worley to regress. He’s a two pitch guy who is succeeding on deception with that delivery. Hides the ball real well. I still think he’d be better suited for relief work, and may b there next year if Blanton is healthy. Most likely though, they’ll trade him for a good to great player like they did with Happ. Then Worley will stink for whatever team acquires him. Maybe Worley for Wandy. Houston is their farm club.
Answer: Conrad….About the same avg as Uggla slumping with less power and not as good defense. Does that make a little more sense to you why Heyward and Uggla were treated differently
2. Who is the backup to Prado when he is slumping and Chipper is out?
Answer: Julio Lugo or Conrad?
Does this start to make more sense to you on why they weren’t treated the same?

Heyward’s hit .220 since the All Star Break with 11 runs scored in 30 games
Constanza’s hit .372 since the break with 18 runs scored in 23 games
I’m a big Heyward fan, but you can’t argue benching him for Constanza

We’ll call that cup-adjusted.

Money play a major role in this too. The Saturday game is a FOX national game with a 4:10 start – making it very hard to work into a DH. It’s possible, but the Mets would have to give up a “gate”. Day – night DH are more common now with a 1:00 gate and a 7pm. Money, money , money.
