The Braves are one win this month away from their fourth consecutive 16-win month. They haven’t done that since 2002. Other years they did it: 1992, 1997, 1999. The 1997 team won at least 16 games in all six months of the season.
Good morning, all. Heyward’s grand slam was nice. But if Constanza would have had the chance, he’d have hit it over 500 feet and it would have been a 6-run homer.
The stars seem to be aligning Braves fans. As soon as Mac is back to where he should be, and if Heyward’s performance last night was the beginning of him playing to his potential, the sky is the limit!
During the Phillies four-year playoff run (since ‘07), Philadelphia has gone 206-121 (.630) post All-Star Game, which is the best winning percentage among Major League teams over that span. 26-10 so far this year. (The Braves are 24-14 since the break)
I think McCann has a little bit of yankitis going. Ever since coming off the DL he seems to be trying to hit 500 ft. HR’s to RF. He needs to get back to what he does best, hit the ball where it’s pitched. As Chipper says, stay up the middle. Before McCann was injured he was hitting with power to LCF.
Big game for J Hey tonight. If he can follow up last night with a couple of hits including another bomb then maybe the corner will have finally been turned.
What if he’s swinging good but gets nothing to show for it?
The Phillies, Braves, and Brewers are a combined 90 games over .500. The other 13 NL teams are a combined 100 games under .500. Weird year. Huge separation between the cream of the crop and the mediocre.

Prado’s OPS+ is 99. Hope he can snap out of it soon. Fredi isn’t removing him from the 2 hole, so I he needs to get movin if my plan to lock him up will come true.
No waiver wire moves, kind of a bummer. I think a big achilles heel is lack of RH bat off the bench and might come back to haunt this team in the playoffs. Lugo off the bench(enough said there), Conrad is struggling, this team has a glaring weakness.
Looks like ole Wes Helms won’t be the answer either(0-6 last night).
This team is vulnerable against southpaws and obviously not a issue during the season, but come playoff time might be a different story.
“But if he has to go 5-fer-8 every two games to win hearts and minds, LOL, he’s probably outta luck with this crew.”
What we say or think doesn’t matter, it’s about how Heyward feels and thinks. Sure, he could feel OK about hitting a couple of balls hard, but I think he’d much rather look back after the game and say, “hey, I really contributed tonight.”
That’s what happened with Uggla. Not only did he start to hit, but he started to produce. And now, we have the Uggla everyone expected.
That’s what I’m personally hoping to see with Heyward.
1) But what specifically? I’m not arguing the point, I’m just not astute about observing mechanics. What makes Hanson’s (or Venters’) delivery so off?
Is it about the use of a whole lot of upper body and not using the thrust from the lower half. Just compared to, say, someone like Beachy – the way he hurls his arm forward instead of a smooth motion seems off to my untrained eye. As far as the rotator cuff is concerned, I think a smoother rotation about the joint is preferable in the long run.
Folks have said that Braves are getting close to locking up the wild card, so they might as well take the pedal off the gas. They’re eight games behind the Phillies in the loss column, so what’s the use.
Although it would take a significant cooling off by Philly for the Braves to catch them, what about the Brewers?
It is possible, if both Atlanta and Milwaukee keep pushing, that Philly could end up with the third best record in the NL.
Considering that the Phils have ten games head-to-head with those two teams and three to four more games to play than either team, an eight or nine game lead in the loss column isn’t insurmountable.
If Philly goes 2-1 (or 2-2 in the case of the Brewers) in those extra games and the Braves/Brewers go 8-2 in the head-to-head games, that’s most of the difference in record.
In other words, Philly is going to have to do some work in September to hold onto its lead. If they go into “Coast Mode” they may find themselves playing at Milwaukee in a short series come October.
abeeeewright, yeah, I think anyone who says any team should take it’s foot off the gas because they have a spot locked up at this point or that a team should focus on the wild card just doesn’t get it. Players go out and try to win. How would that work? A manager thinks something like, “Oh, we are so far behind the Phillies and we are so far ahead in the wild card, I think I’m going to tell my players to only go at 70 percent today.” Doesn’t work that way. Sometimes cliches are more or less true: Take it one day at a time. I don’t think any player is thinking about where the team is in the standings when they are going after a ball that they have to make a tough play to get.
Helms is insurance against a season ending injury to Chipper or Prado. Call it the “Conrad at 2B/3B (Oh Heck, just throw Glaus out there at 3B) in the Playoffs” doomsday scenario.
He’ll probably get a September call up, no matter how badly he stinks up AAA.
Shaun, it’s not about how you tell the team to play, it’s about how often you let certain players play if you have a spot sewn up. It’s a bigger deal for pitchers and veterans than it is for young position players.
Loving the fact that we have 4 off days over the next 5 weeks and a 9.5 game lead. Should be able to back off the accelerator in a few weeks and preserve the power arms in the pen and also help limit Beachy/Minor’s innings.
Eleven in ‘11 (August 24th, 2011 9:22 am): “Big game for J Hey tonight. If he can follow up last night with a couple of hits including another bomb then maybe the corner will have finally been turned.”
Branch Rickey: “Every game is a corner that must be turned.”
Prado’s OPS+ is 99. Hope he can snap out of it soon. Fredi isn’t removing him from the 2 hole, so I he needs to get movin if my plan to lock him up will come true.
Efrim, it goes against everything most people on here believe but if a talented player is producing at a league-average level and is playing good defense but you expected more, you play him anyway assuming that going forward he will play closer to his talent level and not his past performance. In reality, though, I know that’s not the way it works with every Braves player.
Assuming Chipper plays 26 games from here until the end of the season he’ll have to go .392/.575/.662/1.238 over 106 plate appearances and 74 at bats to finish with a season line of .301/.400/.500.
He can totally do it.
Since coming off the DL he’s hit .420/.444/.660/1.104
Since July 1st he’s hit .372/.402/.616/1.018
Since June 1st he’s hit .311/.351/.522/.872
Shaun, RE: your August 24th, 2011, 10:49 am … Co-sign!
More likely, it would involve the manager putting Sherrill and Linebrink in the seventh-ninth (or some other similar idea) to throw away a win rather than asking players to give it 70%.
Also, I’m sure that the clubhouse climate could temporarily affect focus on performance as opposed to “getting their work in.”
Shaun, you don’t have players try less hard, you give guys in the lineup days off or use a 6 man rotation or tell a bullpen guy he is taking a few days off in a row. Not saying that time is now, but when rosters expand we should take advantage of that (if we maintain or build on the lead) especially in regards to our bullpen. It’s our biggest strength and we should try and keep those guys fresh.
Well have to say not to worry about what transpires in September being 9 1/2 games up in the Wild Card. Doesn’t help out the situation going into the playoffs. We need a RH bat. Not going to be facing Zach Duke’s in the playoffs.
I’m really excited about Heyward going the other way on 2 of his hits! That was really great to see. The bullpen has been fantastic. If Jason can start hitting like this it makes our lineup even more dangerous.
We are in a unique situation where we could catch the Phillies, but it is unlikely. So, while we play with the approach to catch them if they falter a bit, we also play with an eye towards going into that last week of September as strong as possible.
What would it be to go into the post season with your rotation lined out exactly the way you want them??? WOW!
Shaun (August 23rd, 2011 4:36 pm): “Mixxo, you are aware
that it hasn’t been all that long since Uggla passed Heyward in OPS+.
“Uggla’s OPS+ is 107. Prado’s is 101. Heyward’s is 92. Hinske’s is 105. All
deserved to be talked about in the same breath, in terms of 2011 overall
production.”
You have totally become a parody of yourself, dude.
Lew (August 23rd, 2011 4:22 pm): “Jair is never
considered as good as he is because his peripherals aren’t all that
impressive, yet he still keeps avoiding runs and winning games with a pretty
damned good ERA and a 2-1 K to BB rate.”
Right on.
Avoiding bats may be good — avoiding runs is infinitely better.

If Philly goes 2-1 (or 2-2 in the case of the Brewers) in those extra games and the Braves/Brewers go 8-2 in the head-to-head games, that’s most of the difference in record.
If I’m Fredo, I’d put Hoss in the 3 slot and leave him there (whenever he plays). A strong Chipper and Heyward would go a long way towards going deep into October.
I don’t give my credit to anything FW says concerning the roster. I’d hope he is monitoring the waiver wire for a cheap RH bat and/or backup infielder.
Edgar Renteria would sure be a great bat to have on the bench in October. But I’m sure we’re not the only team that would think so.
This is the same kind of mindset that earned us the “Buffalo Bills of baseball” moniker. Dunno about some of y’all, but I’m ready to take it to the next level. You think the Phillies are going to ease up?
That is interesting but I don’t think it means a thing as the Brewers, Braves and Phillies are playing completely different ball since their trade deadline acquisitions. The Phillies and Braves showed the D-Backs where they stand in all of this last week. The West has to know they are also rans in this and that the World Series will be hosted in Atlanta, Milwaukee or Philadelphia.
Wayne, I’d put him 3rd as well. He’s still got it. He may need to rest on a DGANG, but he’s killing the ball like he’s 35 again.
And yes, if Heyward has plugged the hole in his swing… this line up will be something fierce come post season time. Only issue is going to be Seabass, and I could live with only one issue in the line up.

Shaun, I normally don’t respond to your posts…………but this is so out there and speaks to your fundamental lack of understanding about the game of baseball I had to
It works this way………..a manager starts giving his regulars rest. Or, instead of leaving a pitcher in there until the 8th he pulls him after 6 – to reduce his innings.
Or in a close situation against a not great team……….he doesn’t use his closer. Starts giving McCann off the day after a night game.
Stuff like that.
Ok, I feel better. And I only had to give 70% on that post
Not a chance in hell it’s HGH. There were “rumors” that he “might know” some one who “may have been acquainted” to a guy who “might have” had PEDs near his house. The rumor was hogwash conjured up just to have something to print and sell.
If the last series with the Phillies becomes null and void both teams will be lining up their starting pitching and giving regulars a rest. Should make for some fun at the Ted.

Efrim, it goes against everything most people on here believe but if a talented player is producing at a league-average level and is playing good defense but you expected more, you play him anyway assuming that going forward he will play closer to his talent level and not his past performance. In reality, though, I know that’s not the way it works with every Braves player.

I don’t give my credit to anything FW says concerning the roster. I’d hope he is monitoring the waiver wire for a cheap RH bat and/or backup infielder.
