Ok….enough…………John, You obviously have a problem with me, that is your right as a man and an American. I moved on long ago, I ask you politely to move on as well. We can agree to disagree. I have not disrespected you and I ask for the same in return. End of argument. I have said that even if it was a campaign slogan that does not make it right. That is my opinion. I also disagree with Nike’s failed campaign of “Get High”. For the exact same reasons. A campaign ad does not make a joke right. But I am moving on, and I hope that you will to. And actually have a little respect for a man’s name.
And Constanza would be there to help solve that problem. I mean if you’re comfortable enough to put him at the top of the order to get on you probably have confidence he’ll still do that later in the order too, correct? Plus he’ll have a solid OBP hitting in front of the pitcher [bringing us right back to the new-Bourn wrecking crew (sorry, I couldn't resist the Bourn puns any longer) at the top of the order]. McLouth can vouch for that. He hasn’t been able to hit much to save his life all year and still has a .344 OBP on the year, not something you generally see from a .228 hitter.
DOB–I don’t ever say thank you because I know you are just doing your job. Sometimes we take things for grant it..I know as much as I read your blogs you do a outstanding job, so well over due…THANKS MAN FOR ALL YOU DO………………………GO Braves.. and have a great trip to Washington.
I’m putting Constanza in the 2 hole because his speed is insane, not because he’s an amazing hitter. I’m putting Prado in the 6 hole because I feel that he can drive in more runs and keep more rallies going from that position. But I would put Constanza in the 8 hole and make him work up in the order before I put him in the 6 hole.
That’s where I’ve put him all along Theo, haha! Generally 1 and 2 are Avg/OBP spots with one 99% of the time having at least above average speed, 3,4, and 5 are HR/Slug, 6 and 7 are Slug/Avg, and 8 is OBP/speed. Constanza wouldn’t fit well at 6. But 8, perfectly.
I just like the idea of 2x the odds of us getting on a speedster before Freeman and Uggla go up to bat. There are pros and cons to both but I like my idea better (not like I’m biased on anything…) when we’re facing righties for the righty/lefty matchup, and I like yours better when we’re facing a lefty. But I’ll leave all this up to Fredi cuz he’s the one getting paid to do it.
Prado is the perfect 2 hold hitter. The 2 hole was made for Prado.
Kimbrel, DOB has a right to feel how he feels about any comment. He is a grown man. Maybe he took my comment as a slight of his job, which was not the intent. But let the man feel how he feels. It was between me and him sir, with all due respect and at no slight to you sir, it didn’t involve you. Although I thank you for your support.
I believe Prado could fit in very nicely in the 6 hole on the fact that M. Childs pointed out: the 6 hole is for a guy with average and power. That’s Prado. But he fits in nicely in the 2 hole as well, but the idea of Prado hitting 6th isn’t ludicrous.
and i do think prado will be our permanent number 2 hitter BUT with constanza in left for now i don’t really see fredi putting a speedster in the 7 or 8 spot. i wouldn’t mind seeing fredi try that pitcher batting in the 8th spot with constanza batting 9th for a game. back to back lead off hitters in the other innings
I don’t know about you Kimbrel, but I am anxious to find out what they do tomorrow night. Dang this game has so many variables that is why it is so beautiful.
I take the answer as NO DOB. I do understand. Have a pleasant road trip sir.
Joseph, DOB doesn’t check his blogs as frequently as the people who comment on it all day. I mean look at how many times he’s commented on it vs how many times someone’s asked him a question. One? He’s not standing you up. He’s busy. Go look at his comment earlier. It’s July 31. He’s got a lot on his plate. Give the man a break.
In regard to who will be sent down, I think I heard either Chip or Joe Simpson say offhand that most likely Martinez would be odd man out….all I could think of when he said it was you have to be insane!
Christian did 6 innings Monday evening and 2 2/3 today…scoreless innings Mr. Proctor…
So the only think Wren didn’t get right in the Houston deal is to get them to take Proctor as well….
Did anyone else hear that we got Bourn AND some cash for Jordan and the arms? I thought I heard that, but could find no reference since.
Just logged back on after about 8 hours or so. No way I am going to go back and read all the comments.
I hate giving up on Schafer, do believe Bourn will be a great addition.
My greatest frustration right now is I am sick and tired of having a runner on third and no outs or one out and we fail to get the run in. How the heck do we correct that. We waste more scoring opportunities than any time I remember in our history. Jeez!!
Not having read other comments. I did like Varvaro’s (sp?) outing the other day. Like many others don’t want to see him go down. And despite Proctor’s performance in the 19 inning game, I think it’s time we parted ways.
Sure was fun watching Constanza’s speed despite his base running blunder today.
M Childs. I have done nothing but respected the man and his job. I know what a beat writers job is. I asked if I could ask a question and he is obviously busy…I do not sweat it. M. Childs, honestly, that asking if I may ask him a question is just the way my wife has changed me. I used to be a drunken idiot, but she taught me to look at life in a totally different perspective. All I can do is see my perspective and accept others for what they view as theirs. I mean no disrespect when I say this, but I honestly think that DOB is the 2nd best beat writer/blog host for the atlanta sports scene. Best blog host by far though. Again I say that with no disrespect to DOB but more of respect to DOL of the falcons. His articles are well written but DOB is more opinionated (although I respectfully disagree with several of his opinions) but I do enjoy the fact that he comes with facts and numbers to back up his case.
Yes my concern remains is the same as yours….got to get the runners at 2b and 3b IN after we get them ON….
I love the Bourn move and Constanza adds another dimension as many of us have already said today and tonight….
But less we get so caught up in the euphoria of the trade….we still have to get them in…cross your fingers all….
BTW….I’m all in on the Infante thing…. he is a free agent after this year so I’m not sure why they didn’t trade him for some prospects and a draft pick….maybe this next month they’ll find a way…
You have Gonzo way too high in the order JD. He should be at best in front of the pitcher. Batting 6th is way too high. Flip heyward and Gonzo and I might like it. Although that is merely my opinion.
“I take the answer as NO DOB. I do understand. Have a pleasant road trip sir.”
Uh-huh…you knew he was busy all along…right. All I was saying was to not take him not commenting personally. And you took that personally. So I guess your family made you sensitive as well, since you obviously have tremendous family ties to all your comments. Which is fine. I’ve had women change me too. But don’t take every knock against a comment as them questioning your respect or bashing you as a human being. And if you could avoid being pretentious in your comments and not bring up completely unrelated topics (DOB is the second best beat writer…) you wouldn’t have so many people criticize your opinions. Ya know…in my opinion.
@the truth. Glad we got Uggla, despite the early season stuggles. In the last couple of weeks he has proven why we did the trade. But I loved Infante, much like Prado. There is no underestimating the value of a super utility player. AND he can play shortstop, unlike Prado. Would be weird if we make a deal the get him back.
Again as you agreed we got to do a much better job of getting runners in. We would have been tied or ahead had we done so today.
When we get healthy our lineup should look like this.1.bourn2.prado.3.chipper.4McCann5.Uggla6.Freeman7.Heyward or constanza or a right handed bat we may pick up.8gonzo.
@the truth…. you can’t trade draft picks in MLB. I figure that the Fish kept him (and will keep him) because he might eek out type A status and they get 2 draft picks for him if he leaves. I believe they will offer him arby dude to his not making much $$$ and he’s had a down year…. I don’t really see much incentive to move him. He WILL at worst be a type B guy, so any offer must beat whatever they value a sandwich pick as…. I’d love to have Infante back. But I see why the Marlins didn’t move him.
M. Childs I think you misunderstood me sir. I was raised and my wife honed in the fact that I mere asked. That is the best I can do is this specific situation is ask. If I asked, then that is the best I can do. I am sorry if I confused you. I asked because if I didn’t then I would have wondered what would have been different. The most I can do is ask, I did….all is beautiful. Hey all are entitled to their opinions. I just ask that they use my birth name when they criticize me and not make up one. I stated an opinion on “2nd best overall” but you negated when I stated that DOB was the best blog host. Either way. Moving on.
I should have addes above it seems we are stuck with Lugo on the roster. Don’t think he deserves to be there but we basically have no alternative for a backup shortstop. Or at least none I can see. Correct me if I’m wrong but think we designated Diory Hernandez (who I would rather have) for assignment when we put Constanza on the 40 many roster.
Someone seriously needs to take his midol tonight. Make sure you change your Kotex too. Seems you have let out a lot of frustration in just a few hours.
So you try to insult Joseph by insinuating that he’s a woman? Hopefully, he doesn’t share your low opinion of the opposite sex and just sees you as the misogynist you are.
whomever you are…..You are completely wrong since you have no clue of me at all. I am always at peace in every single second of every single day. You may worry but I don’t. Guess it is a product of getting older. Or I think it is more of a fact of becoming a father. Sorry to dissapoint you fake name. Buut there is never any frustration in me. My wife takes care of that for me.
DOB I thank you for this opportunity. My question is………I admit I have only been on this blog this season…my wife hooked me….you can blame her for all that is me….but don’t tell her I said that…………
Was my expectation and hopeful learning of whom will be sent down tonight “was hoping in possible quotes” taken as a slight at you and the job you have done sir?
If it was, that was never my intention. I admit that I have become like Pavlov’s dog on the end of game quotes thread. If you took that as a slight at the hard work you did all day then I apologize.
Constanza is definitely an exciting player and I am happy that he is staying with the team. My guess is Freddy will hit Constanza tomorrow in the 8 hole. I, too, think he may be a viable option in RF against lefties. He certainly could not be any worse than Heyward. Tomorrow I think Freddy will use this lineup:
Bourne CF
Prado 3B
Freeman 1B
Uggla 2B
Ross C
Heyward RF
Gonzo SS
Constanza LF
Jurgens P
Oh, so you are one of those that has to have the last word on everything? And you’re not disappointing me because I obviously got under your skin with one silly comment. Dude quit taking everything so seriously. It’s not good on the heart.
Fake name if you only knew. I am actually laughing at you. There is not a moment in my life whether good or bad that I am not smiling. Please do not insinuate upon my life like you just did sir. If you want to thank anybody for the smile on my face first is my angel and then my wife. I wouldn’t trade that for a single win by the Braves ever.
from what we’ve seen constanza should keep playing. heyward is the odd man out when we’re all healthy. unless prado can play short. either way our lineup is geat
Looks like I rattled a certain someones’ cage huh? Good job Brava at getting one of my comments removed. Well played. Even Joseph had the courtesy of laughing at me. You, however, get the nightly boo hoo award. Congrats!
Wren got back in pretty much every fan’s good graces with the Bourn trade, but he’d go right back in the dog house tomorrow if he options Varvaro back to AAA instead of DFA Proctor.
Won’t know until tomorrow, but hopefully it’ll be Bourn and Constanza batting 1 and 2. Man, could you imagine the speed that would bring? The Braves haven’t seen a lineup with that much speed at the top of it since the early 90s when we had Otis Nixon and Deion Sanders.
Why is a pitcher getting sent down? I know we have 14 this second. McLouth is on the DL and the only available outfield is Hinske and Constanza. Prado is back and forth at LF and 3B. Lugo like it or not has to stay because he is a defensive infielder. I hate it, but that is life. So who is getting sent down?
Boo Hoo…….I can accept any insult you toss at me as long as it not the intelligence type. But Just with all due respect keep my wife and child out of it. Other than that………Please feel free, but please try to back it up with some facts.
BravesFan you have every right to feel the way you do. If you honestly feel what you stated then i apologize. You have your opinions and I respect them.
Ok to baseball……..Is Constanza going to play LF tonight and bat 2nd?
DOB I thank you for this opportunity. My question is………I admit I have only been on this blog this season…my wife hooked me….you can blame her for all that is me….but don’t tell her I said that…………
Was my expectation and hopeful learning of whom will be sent down tonight “was hoping in possible quotes” taken as a slight at you and the job you have done sir? — Joseph
I’m not really sure….why you use ellipses in random places throughout….your sentences….but, hey, it’s all good.
As for your question, I’m not sure what you’re asking. Your “expectation and hopeful learning of whom will be sent down tonight”? You thought that in the postgame quotes, someone was going to, in the middle of a answer to a question about the game, just blurt out that (fill in the blank) was being sent down? Not usually the way it happens. Or ever, that I can remember.
And if the manager or someone else told us what the planned move was, then it would have been part of the news about Constanza staying up and we would have reported that. We would not have kept that to ourselves.
Actually, DOB, I have a legit question I’ve wondered about- Do roster moves by both teams have to be made at the same time? Like, for example with Bourn, he’s traded off the Astros roster and onto the Braves, meaning that they call up someone to take his place or what not and the Braves have to make room. Do they have to go through at the same time? Does Bourn ride out 12 hours in limbo, not on anyone’s roster? How does that work?
Corinne Bailey: No, the roster moves between clubs don’t have to coincide. Braves could have added someone to roster today to take Schafer’s place for one day until Bourn is added tomorrow. If they were off tomorrow, or they just wanted to give him a day to take care of something at home, they could wait and add him to the roster the next day. Meanwhile, Astros could’ve added someone to take his spot today.
Don’t worry guys, we will get someone else through the wires even if it is diaz or omar. Wren is not done yet. He knows he needs another arm in the pen and another bat off the bench. I think heyward is finally coming around. He hit the ball twice down the left field line with one being a double. If he gets going and everyone is healthy. I do not see why this team can not go all the way.
I say the lineup should be:
Bourne
Costanza
Prado(great RBI guy)
Freeman
Uggla
Heyward
Ross
Gonzo
Jurrjens.
We have to use our fast guys at the top because they can get on base and raise some hell. Then you will have Prado, Freeman, Uggla, or Heyward to drive them in. That is a pretty sweet lineup.
DOB: You have shown the patience of Job with Joseph.
I won` make a comment about him since I`m not sure
about his intentions.
I do have a question if you are not too tired to answer.
What do the Braves need to do to get PISP in? Maybe they did not set a record with only one run from thirteen hits, but it is dismal anyway. Also, I believe they had two runners on with no outs at least twice. Missed bunts, pop ups, hit into double plays….what shoud they do to stop wasting scoring opportunities?
Not that anybody cares but… I LOVE speed! as thery say,”Speed kills”. there will be a lot more fat pitches for whoever is in the 3,4 and 5 spots. I loved the Otis and Deon show while it lasted. It looked like a freakin track meet when they were on the bases. Bring on the neervous pithers.
I think you have to keep Prado in the 2 hole- more of a contact hitter- too many times this year the big bats have swung and missed Prado got thrown out 2 or 3 times in the Pittsburgh series on hit and runs- I think everyone jumping at GONZO needs to look at the value he is a very good shortstop- With Shaf going to Astros we did the same thing to him as the Sillies did to Bourn as he used to be a philly but just wasn’t there yet- look back at all the years the Bravos made the runs- they always had some speed up top. I will have to deal all day with these Philly fans- but I do feel better after this trade- Other than Shaf- what did the Astro’s get? Go BRAVES!!!
The Braves’ trade for center fielder Michael Bourn on Sunday doesn’t mean the end of Jose Constanza’s major-league stay…………but it should signal the end of McLousy’s stay with Atlanta.
Love the move of keeping Costanza around and getting in the lineup with Bourn. Costanza looks like a real spark plug that can inject some real energy into this club.
Two speedsters at the top of the lineup drive defenses nuts. Hope we can use that lineup frequently. Certainly whenever Chipper sits or Heyward needs a day off, Constanza should be in there even after McLouth comes off the DL. Tying run at third, two out, ninth inning, we’d rather see Constanza up there because he puts the bat on the ball. You can picture Nate striking out and then that pained look on his face. We’re tired of it. We’re considering a special 40 percent tax bracket for players whose performance doesn’t come close to matching their salaries.
Costanza’s problem is he is not used to Major League defense. At AAA hes probably safe at third. I read where a hockey player said his biggest adjustment when he came to the NHL was the fact that all passes were crisp and 99% of the time on target. Goal keepers were 100% better and everybody moved at 15% faster pace. Same thing in the Majors in Baseball you have to adjust to great throws and relays that get done and everybody but McOut can hit the cutoff man..
Not only shoild Constanza should stick around, he should starte the rest of the season, and sit Gonzalez down, Constanza, Bourn AT THE TOP OF THE LINE UP WOULD BE SCARY AND EXCITING FOR THIS TEAM.
GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!
i like constanza he brings excitement to the team and i think in time he will hit 300 plus where schafer would never hit over 250 old chipper likes schafer over bourn is because schafer is white and bourn is black old chipper is racist that is why he said he will let you know in a couple months if bourn would help the team…i can tell you something that would help the team more in two months would be for old chipper to retire, but he wont and wont next year because he is too greedy…and as for getting in the HOF it will be around the 15th year of edgeability if ever ron santo was a better third baseman than old chipper was and he didn’t get in….
Until we get a decent right hand bat to platoon with J-Hey I suggest we use Constanza in right field against lefties since his AAA stats show he hits lefties almost as well as righties, Heyward is an automatic out against lefties.
The Carter’s Little Liver Pills slogan was not a joke at all. There was actually a product of that named developed in the 1800s by a Dr. Samuel Carter. If you’re interested in a source, here you go.l
It had nothing to do with Jimmy Carter or anyone’s disease. You putz.
Considering the RH bat we need would have to be through waivers, and also considering we’re at the top of the pack, as far as records go, an interesting name for a claim to me is Vlad Guerrero. Baltimore would have to eat most of the, approximately 3 million or so, left for this year. But here’s a RH bat, future HOFer, that can PH in late innings and play a little OF once a week or so. He’s a threat that teams would be scared to pitch to. He’s old, yes, but he’s still three years younger than Chipper.
This would be the same concept of Philly trying to get a guy like Thome or Giambi but RH. I don’t think he’ll be on too many teams’ radars in August.

You have sold me M. Childs. Honestly I was thinking until Chipper came back that the line-up tomorrow would be…
1.Bourn CF
2 Constanza LF
3. Prado 3B
4 Freeman 1b
5 Uggla 2B
6 Ross C
7 Heyward RF
8 Gonzalez SS
Dang this line-up could do some damage if only Chipper and McCann were healthy today. Only going to get better.

Tony LaRussa might move the pitcher to 8th and bat Constanza 9th….
then Prado still bats 2nd and after the first inning the lead off is mute anyway….
I like either one…however seeing how we only have a couple guys that can bunt, including our pitchers…I would’t count on Constanza being moved over…
Frankly I’m looking at Bourn and Constanza moving wihout the bunt….SB’s are a good medicine for the non-bunt generation!

Prado 3B

Won’t know until tomorrow, but hopefully it’ll be Bourn and Constanza batting 1 and 2. Man, could you imagine the speed that would bring? The Braves haven’t seen a lineup with that much speed at the top of it since the early 90s when we had Otis Nixon and Deion Sanders.

Sorry, it’s just something I’ve wondered about.
David O'Brien
August 1st, 2011
1:51 am
