“Looks like Bourn to Braves for Minor, Schafer and a lower level prospect. Hold up may be Braves trying to add a second player to deal. Possibly Barmes I’m hearing.”

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I think he would be more help than either Pence or Beltran. I was hoping for Quentin but the ChiSox are only three gm’s out of 1st in the weak AL Central. The guy reminds me of Kenny Lofton in ‘95. What a weapon! Speed never slumps. A walk’s as good as a double and 3rd base is not out of the question with a guy like Bourn. He’s the guy I always feared when we play the ‘Stro’s. . . . You’d have to give ole FW some credit if he makes this happen, especially if he swing a reliever to boot.

Stark Suggests that the Braves will do nothing

It’s easy to forget as the clock ticks down toward Deadline Day, but we’ll remind you of it, anyway. You know what The Big Deal guarantees a team that trades its way into the headlines this time of year?

Absotively, posilutely nothing. That’s what.

The team that won the World Series last year, those San Francisco Giants, didn’t trade for Roy Oswalt or Cliff Lee or Dan Haren last July. They made a couple of deals for relief pitchers (Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez) we barely even noticed.

MORE ON TRADE DEADLINE
For the latest trade news and information from ESPN’s reporters, analysts and contributors, go to the “Countdown to the Trade Deadline” page. Click here.

The team that won the World Series in 2009, those New York Yankees, didn’t pull off any massively acclaimed July trades for Lee or Roy Halladay or Matt Holliday, either. You know which megastar they traded for on July 31? Jerry Hairston Jr.

But that’s not just the kind of thing fans need to remember in the final weekend of July. It’s the kind of thing a team such as the Braves is reminding itself of, in the wake of getting outbid for Hunter Pence and Carlos Beltran.

The Braves feel as if they need a bat — preferably one who hits right-handed, plays center field and can lead off. But do they HAVE to trade for a bat to win the World Series? No — because they still run out there a pitching staff that can shut down any team’s offense, in October or any other month.

So teams that have spoken with Atlanta, even in the wake of the disappointment in losing out in the Pence bid-a-thon Friday, say the Braves have no plans to do something this weekend that they wouldn’t have done last week or last month — just because Rumor Central readers everywhere think they need to make a deal.

Are they frustrated over seeing Pence go to their division nemesis, the Phillies? Oh, yeah.

Are they aggravated that the price tag Houston asked them for — reportedly four of their top pitching prospects, two from their “untouchable” tier and two from the next tier down — seemed as if it was steeper than what the Phillies paid? You bet.

Would they love to find exactly the right fit at exactly the right, affordable price before this deadline? No doubt about it.

But as the deadline draws closer, teams that have spoken with the Braves don’t have the feeling they’re close to any deal for any of the bats on their list.

They took a run at Marlon Byrd of the Cubs. Not going to be traded.

They looked into Denard Span of the Twins. But the Twins are only trading Span for other major league players — or, at the very least, big league-ready players. And the Twins are heavily targeting live bullpen arms. So they match up better with Washington than with Atlanta, which has no interest in subtracting from its big league mix at a time in which injuries have decimated that mix enough.

Michael Bourn is also on the Braves’ radar, even though he hits left-handed. But if the Astros ask for the same package for Bourn that they asked for on Pence, he won’t be with the Braves.

B.J. Upton is another name that would fit. But clubs that have spoken with the Braves say their camp is mixed about whether to pay a hefty price for a year-plus of the Rays’ enigmatic center fielder.

Other names the Braves could kick around? Coco Crisp is one, but he doesn’t supply the type of offense they would prefer. Carlos Quentin is another, but the White Sox only appear interested in dealing him if they get a huge return. The names of Ryan Ludwick and Josh Willingham will get linked to Atlanta on the rumor circuit over the next 24 hours — but there are no signs the Braves have pursued either of late.

So an official of one team who spoke with the Braves said he was told, “We’ve only got to weather the storm for 14 days, until [Brian] McCann gets back.” By then, they hope Chipper Jones will be healthy; Peter Moylan will be back in their bullpen; and they will feel like the urgency to DO SOMETHING will have lessened. If not, there’s always August.

After all, what month was it last year in which the team that won it all picked up its World Series cleanup hitter (Cody Ross)? It wasn’t July. It was August — on a waiver claim. And how’d that work out

Bourn/Schafer

I say get Bourn and keep Schafer. Schafer can learn a lot from Bourn. Schafer can still help this team as a fourth outfielder / pinch runner.

Rabbit Maranville… I really like Bourn but he is no Kenny Lofton in his prime. Bourns a 300 hitter who steal between 50-60 with no power. Kenny might have been the best lead off guy in baseball at that point in his career. I really do like Bourn though. I remember when he got called up for the Phils. They used to use him a ton in pitch running role just to swipe 2nd. A very good weapon

Kimbrel Rocks..I forgot that I said all things are equal, probably because I didn’t say that. DOB… don’t type so fast… you invent words…

“Did we mention, the guy’s been on fire lately? Bourn has hit .359 (42-for-117) with six doubles, two triples and a .400 OBP in his past 27 games, abelit with 27 strikeouts and seven walks.”

Should that be “albeit”? I dunno, I kinda like abelit… it sounds like a kind of fish I had in Florida last week… quite tasty! (I’ll have the lemon-pepper grilled abelit with a ceasar salad, please!)

Now, aside from grammar lessons… I really would prefer the Braves to NOT make a move. This team is NOT going to the World Series anyway, unless we’d somehow acquired Quentin AND Beltran AND Bourn. Too many holes on offense (Gonzalez, McLouth, Schafer), Uggla spent half the year hitting like McLouth, Heyward and Chipper can’t stay healthy, and we missed Prado and Moylan BIG TIME when they were on the DL. Now we are without McCann for two weeks….

Let’s not kid ourselves… the Braves will be World Series favorites in 2012, 2013, 2014, and beyond, because they are YOUNG, because they are steadily IMPROVING, and because our pitching staff will be UNGODLY. A major league staff with Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, Minor, Medlen, Teheran, Delgado, Vizciano, Moylan, O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrell will be UNHITTABLE for the next 3 years!!!!!

So let’s get Heyward and Prado and Chipper healthy this winter… let’s hope Uggla’s first half was an aberation… and let’s watch as the Braves sprint past the OLD Phillies and OLD Giants and OLD Cardinals and OLD Yankees and OLD Red Sox in the next 3 to 5 years. A team led by a HEALTHY McCann, Heyward, Prado, Freeman and Uggla, along with all that pitching, will SURELY be a championship contender in the future. Let’s not mortgage that to see this flawed team win a couple of games in October.

The ‘Stros are definitely in the revamping mode, but I’m thinking they would want quite a bit for Bourn. He’s a difference maker at the top of the lineup. If Chipper decides to play, he’s a Brave and there’s nothing the team can do about it aside from cutting him (which means paying him not to play) Being that he’s still an .800 OPS guy when healthy and that there aren’t too many of those at 3rd in the entire NL, I’d say that there are much worse things to worry about than Chipper playing next year.

bozz Bourn is probably going to command 3 prospects, good prospects don’t know if 1 of the big 4 will be included. Quentin will command 4 good prospects, one of them being an untouchable.

Ward, not really too shocked. I was kind of irked when it happened, but Pence played in a hitter’s park, so he may not put up the same numbers in Philadelphia. Chipper is a thorn in the side for the front office operations. He doesn’t play enough to justify making $13 million a year. Prado would be better at 3rd defensively and probably offer more production at the plate… and Chipper is no longer a good #3 hitter. If he’d just go ahead and retire, we could use his salary to acquire someone who could actually play 150 games a season and drive in 100 runs. Preferably a left-fielder.

Totally agree with you here Brian, if I had my pick before any of the moves had been made Bourn would have been my choice for the Braves. He is perfect in everyway, I know some say that because he bats from the left, he’s not a good fit, but he gets the job done against lefties so who cares. Can we actually get him at a fair price? Thats the real question. I am starting to believe the phills have Astros’s GM in their back pockets after the Owalt and now Pence deals. Yeah the phillies gave up some prospects, but the Braves offer waas just as good if not better. Hopefully i’m wrong but if the Braves throw out a similar offer for Bourn and he balks again I will be convinced that he is still working for the phills or hopes to be again soon. if again he asks for two of our top tier pitchers i hope Wren laughs and hangs up the phone. Bourn would be a game changer for this team and would again put us on par with the phillies and giants. I don’t know if it will be enough to overcome the 5 game deficit plus their addition of pence, but it certainly gives us everychance to take them down in the playoffs which is all you can ask for. I hope this move happens but even if it doesn’t if we can get a coco crisp type guy and still keep our top prospects, then its Ok. That will most likely get us two the playoffs with Ugglas comeback and lets not forget about Heyward, if they can send him down for a few weeks or somehow get him back to form this year he would be a bigger boost than any trade we could make. At least take a shot at Jeff Kemp. Let the bankrupt Dodgers tell you no. It’s worth a 2 minute call by Wren. Shock the world!

Who’s Jeff Kemp? (And Wren did call the Dodgers. They said Kemp was not available.)

Ken Rosenthal (Fox) and Buster Olney (ESPN) have reported that the Braves have intensified their involvement in talks with Houston for Bourn.

Look Kemp ain’t available. You don’t think every contending team in the NL and AL called to see what the price is.

I believe that the Phillies upgraded when they got Pence, but lets not forget that Pence played for a nothing team and now he will be in the pressure cooker that is Philadelphia. Plenty of good players can’t handle media hotspots. We will have to see how he does there. That being said I still think the Braves will do something to improve. I realize that the WC is probably the most we can hope for but the Phillies and Giants can be beaten and we must not lose sight of that. No one player guarantess winning. PERIOD.

I think the Phils overpaid for Pence (whose home/away splits are a hundred points different over his career) Away from minute Maid park he’s a .775 OPS player. That has value, but as he is only avg defensively I don’t think he was worth 2 top 50 prospects and 2 other B or C level guys too…. Especially when you consider that he will make $11 mill via arby next season!
