I’m of the opinion that Philly overpaid for Pence. I like Hunter, I got to watch him play in person a lot his very first year in pro ball as a Houston minor league team plays in my town (oddly Upstate NY) I identified him as a guy then that I’d wish the Braves would get someday but he’s not worth 2 top 50 guys plus 2 more on top of having to pay him north of $20 million the next two years. He’s a solid player who makes Philly better yes but I wasn’t scared off Philly before and I won’t be now. THe Braves are hanging with the Phils and need to make a move but in no way am I laying down and giving up on the rest of the season because the Phils get a little bit better. Let’s get healthy add a bat, saddle up and play some baseball. It’ll make it all the more fun when the Braves beat Philly
…having said all that if Braves have to give up Olberholtzer for Ludwick then I’ll be pissed.
really? hmmm. He’s a great athlete but nothing really special as a hitter actually 655 career away from Cincy. and its not like he is really a youngster. He might equal Bourn but certainly not Pence
WTF…I knew if Pence was considered the prize at this year’s trade deadline, the Phillies would get him. MLB or someone should investigate that team…like where are they getting all this money. They’re not owned by any corporation or billionaire, they don’t have their own tv station, and they have 4 other MLB teams in a 150 mile radius from them.
And everyone says they have nothing in their farm sysytem after trading about 10 of their top prospects away for Lee, Halladay, and Oswalt. Yet they have 5 rookies on their active roster (all contributing) and before this latest trade, when I go on the sites rating minor league systems, the Phillies are near the top. Something ain’t right!
I read something earlier that made sense. Pence may be having a career year partly due to the Stros being so bad. The pitchers don’t have to pitch him as tough and lay it in for him more.
The answer is no, the Braves have no .300 hitter that is healthy. McCann is hitting over .300, but is currently on the disabled list. I must say though, give me guys who get on base consistently over guys who just hit .300.
Thankfully, everyone is ignoring katherine… especially since no one recognizes her and this is probably her first time on the blog. Good first impression, huh?
I think part of it is with Shafer and McLouth are hurt so FW realizes that we need a speedy CF more than anything now. Could we work it out to trade for Bourn with the stipulation that we trade him back to the Astros during the offseason? That would probably drive the price of prospects down if that’s what Wren is worried about. Then we’ll have a good bit of money to sign a free agent when guys like Chipper come off the books, so we can solve our issues that way.
If Stubbs is a possibility, he is a better option than everybody else being mentioned as possibilities for Atlanta. Right handed, with power and speed and plays great defense at CF
My friend is 18, just graduated high school and already has 2 kids. I feel so sorry for her. She says she’s happy but you know she isn’t. Rachel, if you’re reading this blog, I’m sorry.
I’m not too concerned to see Beltran and Pence go elsewhere, because the best options for the Braves are still on the board. Bourn is our best bet. We need a center fielder. Then, let’s get Quentin. We need a right handed bat in the lineup. He can play in right when a lefty is one the mound, and he can play in left when Chipper is out. When Chipper retires, leftfield is his and hopefully Heyward has matured as a baseball player into the stud we all think/hope he is.
While we are at it, let’s rid ourselves of some of the bodies taking up space on the roster — Lugo and Procter. We should promote Patrornicky and let Gonzales mentor him and come in for late inning defensive purposes. Also, if we have so many good arms in the system, we can surely promote some of them to strengthen our big league pitching staff.
The obsession with pence is that he is hitting .307 with 62 RBI a few stolen bases and 11 hr and 49 runs, those are better numbers than anyone on the braves roster that’s why we were drooling over him.
Now that Beltran and Pence are both gone…I’m willing to bet money that if Frank Wren makes a move, it will be for someone that’s not being mentioned at this time.
The one thing about Beltran and Pence that stood out from the other options were that those were not be traded as platoon players.
Granted center field is a need with both McLouth and Schafer on the DL but maybe now we need to quickly shift the focus to getting a right handed bat regardless of position to provide depth. Maybe someone like a Ty Wiggington who can play multiple positions and provide some pop.
If Stubbs is a possibility, he is a better option than everybody else being mentioned as possibilities for Atlanta…Tomas
a career 655 hitter away from home? He might be as good as Bourn but if so why would they trade for Bourn and trade Stubbs?, but being better than anybody else is more an indictment of what is available than a props to his hitting ability. I’d much prefer Carlos though I fail to see why they would trade him unless swamped by an offer
“My friend is 18, just graduated high school and already has 2 kids. I feel so sorry for her. She says she’s happy but you know she isn’t. Rachel, if you’re reading this blog, I’m sorry.”
Stubbs killing lefties, 900 OPS by the way. Struggling a lot vs righties, possible platoon candidate with Schafer if neither figure it out all the way.
Well we still have plenty of pitching! They better shut everyone out, like tonight because our offense is about as weak as any team in either league. Thanks Frank!
