Boscan makes touching connection with 10-year-old cancer patient

Braves backup catcher J.C. Boscan was already getting emotional just listening to 10-year-old cancer patient Lily Anderson sing the national anthem at Turner Field on Thursday night. And that was before he realized who she was.

He was standing near her mother and happened to notice she was wearing the same neon green wristband he wears on his right arm. Taking a closer look, he could make out the word “Anderson” on it, just like his.

“I’m like ‘Oh my God,’” Boscan said.

Boscan had met Lily Anderson of Cumming last season in Triple-A Gwinnett when she was invited to the dugout for autographs. Anderson, who suffers from Neuroblastoma, had given him her bracelet in return that said: “Anderson Power, pray for Lily.” He had not taken it off since.

Boscan hadn’t recognized her a year older, with a flowered bandana on her head.

Boscan waited out the extended ovation from the crowd, her emotional embrace with her mother and her conversation with Brian McCann, who is a spokesman for the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research.

Shortly thereafter, Boscan told McCann about the connection and McCann took him to Anderson to show her Boscan was still wearing her bracelet.

“Mac told her, ‘Do you remember this?’ and she got so excited,” Boscan said. “Her mom started crying again. It was emotional.”

Boscan said he wears the bracelet day and night to remind him of those undergoing hardships.

“There are things outside of baseball,” said Boscan, who hopes to keep in touch with Anderson now. “Sometimes we need to think of those people and have them in our prayers, especially little girls or little boys like that who are suffering from a disease. I think it’s the right thing to do.”

Great story! This world would be alot better place if there were more J.C. Boscans. He is a great guy and you talk about a Team Player! Good example is his attitude and accepting his role. And this shows how big his heart is. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lily. She is such an inspiration! We could use many more Lilys also!

Truth, nobody needs anybody. Dang I was close on my projection for Beachy tonight. Dang it Fredi. 2 more outs lol. Anyways…..Pence is a very good (bordering on possibly great) player. There are still options out there. Quintin possibly? I do not know if he is the answer. I think the real answer for this team is to play maybe just maybe…….1 game with at least 8 out of 9 starters healthy? They will make the WC. Get in and there is a chance to win. Baseball is a funny game that way sometimes.

Reading most of the comments on most of the threads on here people would think this team is horrible and in last place. Last place in the majors not just division. I have my theories on whom most of those “bloggers” are (referring to more than a lack of baseball knowledge). For them I say this……..PENCE TO THE PHILS. BRAVES SHOULD FORFEIT EVERY GAME NOW. THEY WILL LOSE BY 50 GAMES BEHIND THE PHILS THIS YEAR.

Still all night tonight and full day Saturday and Sunday until 4pm. maybe actually wait and see what happens before forfeiting games, novel idea.

As a father of a beautiful young girl….I cannot imagine the pain that family is going through. I pray Lilly gets through this disgusting disease, and her and her family will be able to become stronger both individually and as a unit through this saddening ordeal. My heart aches for them.

Joseph,

Folks are just bummed that we have three guys on the DL and a 38 year old with creaky knees hobbling around the bases…. and once more we are most likely to be left with one of the “so-so” players.

A guy like Pence would have been someone to watch for several years…and a great citizen too from all I read….looking at his tall gangly frame I thought of Murph…

And the semi-endless stash of arms in the minors do little for today at the Ted…..

Look at the smile on Costanza. Just a thought, maybe he can be the real lead-off guy that Schafer never was. Needs to prove it, but dang he is fast and he actually hits the balls on the ground.

Truth, I was meaning every and I mean every thread not just Pence. Most have “fan” in their names. Quintin isn’t a so-so player. Again I am not sure he is the answer. Remember Bourne still there, Quintin, I do not like Upton, but he is out there. Let’s just wait and see what happens. With the pitching we have and the bullpen (could use another arm), I like the Braves chances in a series with any of the 5 possible opponents in either series heading into the WC. Will it be easy? No. It never is. Get in and have a chance to win.

My next move, jb? Get some guys healthy. Asking price is too high for me, but try to get Bourne for Delgado and Simmons or Costanza. I never liked the idea of trading Minor this season. He is the only insurance policy they have for a viable pitcher this year if something happened to any of the starters. Teheran, i do not feel is going to be fully ready until mid-season next year. But I think something happens either late tonight or by tomorrow afternoon. Might be a small one first, but if they get a bat my gut is saying Saturday around lunch-time.

Bourn is a lefty so I don’t think they’ll go after him too seriously…. and I doubt Houston will part with him too…for a reasonable “price” after getting rid of Pence…. losing #1 AND #2 might be too much for the fans….

Imagine how they feel seeing Pence go….

I’ll bet that they don’t do anything towards Bourn…the kid tonight was adequate to say the least so with two CF on the DL I’d think they’ll keep their focus on a RH bat and an arm for relief

I didn’t think they would do anything about Bourne, but if was me….I would at least ask. Loved Constanza….a lead-off man actually hitting the ball on the ground…..was refreshing to say the least.

July 29th, 2011
10:55 pm

I’d like to see Bourne as well, but I think they’ll go RH outfielder and middle relief to go with Moylan….

Ideally would be a Bourne in CF and a RH bat to plug in in LF and RF against lefties…

Costanza was the highlight of the game….man is he small or what! But he hit better than the last two out there didn’t he!!!

Joseph

July 29th, 2011
11:01 pm

Lead-off guy hitting balls on the ground and running them out. Might be an idea. Plug into LF? Prado is a very good LF this year. He has got a freaking arm on him. I didn’t think he had that kind of an arm, but when he throws to the plate…………DON’T RUN ON PRADO. I wouldn’t mind a platoon in RF for lefties, but whom? If they do go get Quentin, he has to play everyday. I remember a comment by a national announcer on Fox Saturday games (forget whom) that with McLouth in LF Schafer in CF and Heyward in RF that the Braves had 3 CFs playing in the outfield. I never knew Heyward played CF. Can he? I doubt it, but that just came back to me them saying that.

I’ve heard some of the chatter about Heyward being able to play CF, but I see nothing watching “stumble” (maybe a little harsh) around RF, so how could he play CF ? I just don’t see it….

I cannot see the Quentin thing happening since Chicago is only 3 1/2 out of first place…. and if they trade him for prospects while in the fight for a pennant what does that say about what they think of him?…..just don’t get that one….

Joseph

July 29th, 2011
11:37 pm

Truth they need pitching. I think that is why the rumors are out there. Maybe they have a kid in the minors they love and Quentin is keeping him from coming up? I don’;t know, but there are too many “rumors” to not have some legitimacy to them.

the truth...

July 30th, 2011

Joseph
I heard some talk that Quentin is not a good fielder… looking up his stats I’m not sure, but I saw some negatives on a couple of sites… He is a powrful hitter, very strong and has better numbers than any of our guys now…the defensive negativie isn’t a good thing…

Just read some info from Chicago sites and looks like White Sox want Beachy for Quentin…not going to happen. They want starting pitching ready for this year… have an incoming replacement but he has a injured thumb since first of the year. He has not been able to play the past week so ……

Joseph

July 30th, 2011
12:55 am

Will be fun to see what happens next day and a half truth. His thumb injury form the first of the year sure hasn’t hurt his power numbers. Hasn’t played…might be they don’t want to risk him getting injured before a trade? Just making suggestions. I do believe real news and not just rumors will be abound tomorrow.

the truth...

Quentin has been playing…it is the replacement that hasn’t been playing because of the injured thumb….

Also they want at least 2 top prospects…
