Updated: McCann to go on 15-disabled list

Braves catcher Brian McCann left Tuesday’s game against the Pirates with a strained left oblique. He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

The Braves said they will announce the corresponding roster move on Wednesday. Following the game, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he expected J.C. Boscan to be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

“Hopefully it is not a bad oblique,” Gonzalez said. “There are different grades of it and hopefully we can get him back in 15-20 days. That’s a big bat out of the lineup.”

Gonzalez said David Ross, who caught nine innings of the 19-inning contest that began Tuesday, will catch Wednesday’s game against the Pirates.

McCann was injured on a throw to second base on a steal attempt in the 10th inning. The throw sailed into center field. After calling trainers out, McCann tried one throw back to the pitcher but quickly motioned that he could not continue. Ross entered the game.

Boscan is hitting .194 in 53 games with the G-Braves this season. He has six doubles and eight RBIs.

Ross is the best back-up catcher in the game. Starter on almost every team in the majors. 100% confidence he can hold down the fort. Who will get the call? I am not sure of the catchers available in the minors.

Injuries happen Big Jam. Never seen a team like this with injuries though. 11 games with starting 8? WoW. And still the 4th best record in the Majors. And Wren has done a horrible job? Fredi is a horrible manager? Hum.

Please no on Beltran. Top pitching prospects and not even a draft pick out of it? PLEASE NO. How can we really evaluate what this team is capable of by only having the starting 8 play ONLY 11 games. No other team has that. All teams have injuries but none like this.

Fret not. We’re not selling the farm for Beltran. Wren might even strong-arm them and get Beltran for less than one of the core 4 prospects, or we’ll get a Willingham. McLouth’s recent issues might spur the need for a deal.

Mac needs to get better, hopefully he’ll only take two weeks, but remember Ross was a starter just a couple of years ago and is the best backup catcher we’ve had since Estrada.

Is there a limit to how many players can be on the 15 day disabled list at one time. If not why don’t they put McClouth, Heyward, Schafer, and A. Gonzolaz all on there. All with batting averages under .230 and swinging like old grandma’s at anything close to the plate would probably qualify them as disabled. Seriously I don’t know why in addition to any trade that the Braves make why they don’t bring up Tyler Pasternicky from AAA and giver him a shot at shortstop with Gonzolaz serving as the backup and pinch hitter(good luck with that.) The kid’s on the fast track and probably next years starter at shortstop. He’s 21 and look what Freeman is doing. Give him a shot.

As much as I don’t want the Braves to have to give up their farm for Beltran, I must admit that I really wanna win this year so I can rub it in these TWINS fans up here that keep giving me crap about what happened back in 1991!! LOL!!

All kidding aside, even if the Braves don’t get Beltran, they really do need a bat regardless. I would feel better about their chances if they could swallow their pride a little bit and determine whether they want to win THIS year, or maybe wait til NEXT year when their farm pitchers are ready to go……..what do you guys think?

p.s. Heh….why don’t we get Michael Cuddyer from the Twins………I hear he can hit AND pitch these days……..that would be a great pick up for us AND it would sure piss off all my friends up here!! :)

Vince, First off…….Pasternicky just got promoted to AAA. He is not going anywhere until he can prove he can do something at AAA. He is on the fast track that is why they promoted him to AAA LAST WEEK!!!!!! He will get his shot at ST next year. Funny you point to Freeman that is 21 and what he is doing in his rookie year……and claim to want to “dl” Heyward who is 22 and had comparable numbers as a 21 year old rookie last year. Thanks for you input sir. I can tell that you do not get the big pitcher that a REAL GM like Wren has to have. No offense sir, but I am glad you are not the GM of this team let alone the bat boy.

A braves fan in Minnesota…….try reminding them of stealing the series when a stupid 1B umpire allowed a pick-off play on Gant where the 1B caught the ball after Gant was on the bag and then picked him up and carried him off the base to get the out call. Cheating umps. Seriously I will never forget that stupid call there. So if a guy is safe and you have the ball, why not just pick him up fireman style and get the out call………….it worked in ‘91 for the Twins

That equals 10 games by the way. But I am still bitter about that call at first in game 6 of ‘91. We got robbed period.

With all the complaining about how bad this team is………11 games with starting 8 NOBODY ELSE HAS INJURIES LIKE THAT THIS YEAR…………..so who can any non-gm honestly evaluate what this team is capable of while only having the starters that Wren put together playing only 11 games so far?

I mean every team has injuries and whatnot, but they all know that if you wanna win you got to make difficult desicions that many people may not like at all. I, just like everyone else in here truly want the Braves to win this thing…….so we just have to wait to see what happens in the next few days and take what our cards give us!

This has gotten really old now. I typically don’t put much into baseball managers in general, kind of more a babysitter of spoiled kids, but I have to question Fredi now. I’m thinking (not an original idea) that he simply overplays the guys. Bullpen big 3 is an obvious example, but you have to seriously question why guys keep getting rushed back-ala a 39 year old guy who just had knee surgery or a young stud who just had a large hole cut in his leg to remove a potentially deadly infection. 10th inning, McCann plays every day, and you just know he would still be going in the 16th had he not injured himself. Maybe there really is something to the fact the guy never played in the majors. Top brass better step in before he ruins the future of this team, because this year is starting to look not so good.

Brother, I also want to win this year and every year. I guess since I had a family I had to get more into the big pitcher idea thing. My entire point is. Ok let’s take Beltran….(First off Teheran is off the table no question) will require Minor(OUR ONLY LHP, yes our 1st round pick is a leftie but he is not near ready for the majors and no I cannot spell his name so I not try), and also either Delgado or Viz. to a divisional rival. No way. I would rather lose in the first round than give the mets 2 starters that can beat our brains in since we face the mets 18 times a year. Again big pitcher.

Pence is off the table so no point there. Bourne….1 top tier pitching prospect plus having to eat his salary, don’t forget that Liberty owns this team and it is at the budget limit now.

With all the injuries that are piling up no clue what they will do. But $$$$ is a big issue. And I would rather not get rid of 3-4 future starters especially since Hudson and Lowe have expiring contracts after next year. JJ is still arby……keep him until there is no way to work a deal, but DO NOT TRADE HIM STOP SAYING TRADE JJ………….huge future with this team, would hate to see it mortgage for 1 guy that MIGHT help. What happens if he gets hurt? SOL. Really want to give up the next 3 years for 1 guy?

McCann plays every day…….humm…..no he doesn’t. He actually plays less than most starting catchers in the majors because Ross is the best back-up catcher and would start for at least 20 teams right now.

Life threatening staph infection to Prado? Sir No staph infection is life threatening unless it is untreated. They treated it.

Ok to my questions sir….

I think the Phillies have the Braves beat when it comes to man games lost to the DL. Utley alone was like 50 games. Lidge 100 games, Madson almost a month, Oswalt more than a month and still on it…Ruiz, Contreras(most of the season), Victorino 2 stints. Our team offensively can win this year regardless of the fact that our starting pitching ERA is trending upward. I’d be fine with getting Beltran for Minor and Minor only. I’m not his biggest fan, though. Other than that, don’t make any “splash” trades. A nice “Matty Diaz” type would be good for me. Oh crap, let’s hope Rossy is ok. I know LHP’s are “hard to come by” but Minor (in brief time I agree) hasn’t impressed me. On top of that, we got the Gilmartin kid that could give him a run in a couple years. Minor won’t start for us next year regardless so it really just wouldn’t bother me. I do understand that he could be a decent picture but that’s a risk I’ll take. People complain still about losing Wainwright; J.D. Drew wasn’t a good pickup for us but if was, would we be upset about Wainwright? I wouldn’t be. He’s good but no Halladay, C. Lee, or even Chris Carpenter. Just saying, you never know what a kid might turn out. I do want the best chance to win this year though. Chip has lost it. That wasn’t even close to being “lined to center field”

I didn’t realize that the Bravos were playing a double header tonight.

OK if Proctor holds the lead right here……I will take back what I said about him the other day….I won’t tell you what it was, but trust me it was nasty!!! :)

Matt, I am speaking on just my personal opinion here so it means nothing obviously, but that said……..

I think the talk of them listening to offers for Lowe this year was nothing more than Wren trying to get a feel for the market for Lowe this winter. I believe Lowe will be traded this off-season, for what I have no clue, but a gut feeling.

Hudson has only next year left on his contract. Solid pitcher……..offer him another deal but for less money, so with the Lowe trade I believe will happen………..who steps in that spot? I do not believe Teheran is completely ready. I am looking more at mid season for him next year. Yes he dominatees AAA, but he has been nothing but nervous when spot starting. Maybe ST can change that. Oh yeah, I forget…….Medlen was a starter before the injury…….depending on his rehab this off-season……….Wren has a tough job…………..So many toys to play with lol

If Proctor pitches 5 scoreless, I’ll still say what you may have said the other day.

I know, I’ll bet that you said,“We need a pitcher. Not a belly itcher.”

Way to go Proctor. Kid is the weakest in the bullpen, but

GIVE THE DANG KID CREDIT…….i assume a lot by saying that there……..

Proctor is dealing tonight. He has talent that is why Wren signed him.

That said….We need a better bullpen than Proctor. He should be DFAd as soon as a trade is made, but give the dang kid credit.
