I’m reading a few people mention that if we trade Lowe we would have room to pay for Pence. If we trade for Pence and have to give up 2-3 pitching prospects the Braves might not feel they are in a position to trade Lowe. I’m thinking if the Braves trade Minor for Beltran they might not trade Lowe anymore. Wouldn’t Minor be the call up if the Braves traded Lowe? Can anyone with insight comment on this. Ever since the Beltran / Pence rumors came about we have not heard anything about Lowe. Thanks

Legitimate chances to win the World Series are not an opportunity to be wasted because you arent quite getting everything you’d want in a perfect world, or because you are pretty sure the team is going to be good for the next few years

Fact of the matter is Minor is likely going to only ever be 5th, 4th at best, starter for us. We have a chance to get a guy who could be enough of an offensive boost to get us a very, very legitimate shot at winning a World Series this year. Don’t you play to win the game? Giving your 4 or 5 starter for the future, if even that, for an impact bat that can do that, you make the deal. This isn’t giving up a 4 or 5 starter, a starting shortstop, and en elite catcher prospect ALL for just an impact bat.

I’m not saying I didn’t want Beltran! I just realize Minor is a coveted piece many teams want and these people know more than me and you. He’s not JoJo yet and at the end of the day Minor could end up being a good ML pitcher. If it goes down we’ll be giving away a solid MLB ready pitching prospect for a star bat for a playoff run.

grandpapeckinpah, who cares if Schafer can hit. It’s his intangibles that are going to help the Braves get to the World Series. You know, his attitude. That’s what wins ball games, attitude. Doesn’t matter that you hit like James Loney. I wish the Braves had 9 Jordan Schafers and James Loneys…you know, for their attitude and intangibles. What? You don’t see it? You must not watch games.
(That was obviously sarcasm. But I do disagree that the Braves can’t make it to the Series, even if, God forbid, the insist on playing Schafer and hitting him leadoff consistently. They have enough talent elsewhere to make up for that deficiency. It would make it a little bit harder, though. Let’s hope they don’t insist on doing that.)

Seriously, they have to make some kind of trade. McClouth is unable to contribute anything of substance. Prado will have to play 3rd quite a bit. If it’s Beltran I’m ok with it. Minor has limited value for this team outside of the fact that he’s a lefty.
They can’t keep drafting pitchers and holding on to them when the outfield is this bad.

It may seem like there is an abundance of pitching prospects. But when you factor in Hudson & Lowe contracts ending plus JJ & Hanson FA clocks ticking down, there could be 4 spots coming open in the rotation in the next 2-3 years.

One thing no one has pointed out: if we don’t get Beltran, it looks like the Giants or Phillies will. So not only would we be stuck with Schafer’s terrible ‘production’ in CF, but then our chief competition to get to the World Series would add a .911 OPS bat.

184 missed games since the start of the 09 season. Moved from CF because of chronic knee problems. Likely to go down to injury at a moment’s notice which might actually spelll the end of his career. Stil owed $9 million this year and is a Free Agent at seaqson’s end with no possibility of even garnering draft choices in return.
All of that for a p[itcher drafted in the first round who at least six teams deem worthy of sending scouts to look at him and the player most teams ask for in any trade scenario, projected at the very least to be a mid rotation starter, under contractual control for six full years, three at the MLB minimum.
Now why wouldn’t a sane person do this deal.

I’d rather get Pence. Any way they consider trading one of the big three (Delgado, maybe?) as centerpiece in a deal for Pence. I just like the idea of having control longer than 2 months. We’d still have Tehran and Vizcaino, not to mention Gilmartin, Beachy, Hanson, and Jurrjens as our young studs. Hudson as the vet leaders.
You could still move Lowe to make room for Pence’s salary. We’ll also be losing the Kawakami albatross for next season’s payroll; McLouth too.
The thing that bothers me about trading Minor is that we’re short on lefty pitchers.

We can win with what we have. So instead of looking at it as what we need to solidifying the change to win this year, I’d try to make a deal that would put us in contention for the next 2-4 years. I know he is a left handed hitter, but I’d go after Colby Rasmus of St. Louis. The guy is in the dog house over there but has 5 tool potential, I think he just needs a change of scenary:
What about something like this:
1. OF-Colby Rasmus
2. RP-P.J. Walters
for
1. SP-Mike Minor
2. OF-Nate McLouth
3. 3B-Brandon Hicks
4. SS-Diory Hernandez

Lew, this is how it works. You know that. Prospects are the currency, MLB stars on teams out of contention are the goods. I would be ok with the move but i would prefer to trade Minor and another very good prospect(not Julio,Vizcaino or Delgado) to San Diego for Adams or Bell AND Cameron Maybin. It would help us in both areas of need. Maybin is not as good a hitter as Beltran but he is great defensively – as us Braves fans saw last year and has great speed and a little punch from the Right side. Bell or Adams would keep O’Ventbrel fresher for Sept/OCT.

Too much to give up for a two month rental. If you’re going to give up that much add some more and see if you can swing a trade for Upton now or in the offseason. Justin, that is. He has a club-friendly contract. 6.75 mil in ‘12, 9.75 mil in ‘13, 14.25 in ‘14, 14.75 in ‘15. He will be 27 at the end of his contract and has stolen 14 bases this season and hasn’t shown the baggage to this point that his brother wears like a Mr. T Starter Kit. With Kenshin’s and Nate’s contract coming off this year 80-90% of Upton’s contract would be covered in the last two year’s of his contract anyway.

According to this, the Braves were stupid for taking him.
Atlanta Braves — Mike Minor (SP) from Vanderbilt University; To be honest this was a tough pick to understand, and Minor must have something that the Braves see, because he didn’t have dominating stuff in college. With an ERA in the high 3’s this is far too high to choose him.

Likely to go down to injury on a moments’ notice which might actually spell the end of his career. Is a Free Agent at season’s end with no chance of garnering draft picks in return. Hitting only .232 with a .291 (albeit great slg%) against LHP (which we need) , yet hits much better as a LH Hitter (which we don’t need).
Then all the stuff about Minor, too.
That better for you? Again, sheesh.

And we have to realize that. At that point all that stuff about gee in a perfect world you dont tarde to a division rival, gee in a perfect world you dont trade a starting pitcher – all that goes out the window -
Robert, in my original post, I said I get the “win-now” concept; and I also said I wouldn’t whine if this is the way the Braves go.
I don’t like this particular deal, on several levels, which I outlined. If it happens, fine… Go Braves. But doesn’t mean I have to agree with pulling the trigger on this, especially a week and half before the deadline. I hope we come up with something that’s a better fit.

Lew–I’d do the trade. You’re overblowing the injury risk, IMO. If that’s your best argument against the trade, then it’s probably going to be an ok deal for us.
I have no complaints about him leaving at the end of the year–we’re not saddled with a long-term contract. And we wouldn’t offer arb anyway so it’s a moot point.
Minor to me is a 3/4 guy at best. Worth it.
