(Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien today.)
Derek Lowe was convinced the Braves were about to trade him two winters ago, and it didn’t happen. The Braves traded Javier Vazquez instead. Now that his name has resurfaced in trade speculation, he’s not as fazed.
Lowe had a little fun with a Saturday report that his native Detroit Tigers had expressed interested in trading for him.
“Detroit,” said Lowe, the Dearborn, MI native, he announced to teammates when he arrived in the Braves clubhouse, drawing some mock applause. “Hey, I’m going to the American League.”

Could Lowe be at a crossroads?
He makes light, but that’s probably just because he’s a 38-year-old veteran who’s played for four different organizations, with the Mariners, Red Sox, Dodgers and Braves.
“It’s this time of year,” Lowe said. “There’s a lot of people’s names get thrown around….You have no say so. Why stress over something that you have no control over?”
Logically, though, he understands why his name is among them now.
“People say we may need a hitter and we have a lot of pitching and I make money,” Lowe said. “So it’s kind of obvious why you’re named. And we have a lot of good young pitchers.”
The Braves are listening, but any talks are in the early stages and no offers have been made for Lowe yet, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Braves could trade Lowe and clear salary to pursue a big-name hitter, and insert Mike Minor or Julio Teheran into the rotation.
Trading Lowe this time around might be a little more likely, if not at the July 31 deadline, then maybe in the offseason. When the Braves last tried to trade him, he was still owed $45 million over three years. Now he’s owed approximately $6 million the remainder of this season and $15 million next.
What makes Lowe valuable to potential suitors and what the Braves would be giving up if a deal is made, is his reputation as a big-game pitcher. Lowe went 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA last September for the Braves, and was their Game 1 starter for the Division Series against the Giants.
This and that
It was family day here this morning at Turner Field where players are invited to bring their families onto the field. Always fun to see little folks running around, like Cooper Proctor, one of Scott Proctor’s four children, all of whom he had in tow.
Cooper asked David Ross if he could put on his catcher’s mask. Sure enough Ross complied and the 3-year-old Proctor got to wear the hockey style catcher’s make and crouch down for a photo. Cute stuff.
And speaking of families, reliever Jonny Venters told me this morning his wife Viviana is expecting their first child in November. They are having a boy. It’s been a big year for Venters, first-time All-Star and soon-to-be father. Congrats.
Wedding dress guy….Oh I know we’re not supposed to give this guy pub for jumping out on the field last night. But I’m sure he’s paying the price. A photographer here heard he might have to wait until Monday for his bail hearing, so….Just for those who weren’t here last night to see, I’ll post a photo.

Not exactly wedded bliss at The Ted Saturday night
OK running behind and want to post this before the game. Jair Jurrjens going today, looking for his 13th win of the year, just two shy of his career high.
LINEUP
For the second straight day, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez wanted to get another right-hander in against lefty Tom Gorzelanny, so he started Wilkin Ramirez in place of Jason Heyward in right field. Nate McLouth sat on Saturday night. Nothing wrong with Heyward.

If they get a high priced hitter after trading Lowe before the trade deadline it makes sense. If they just get a platoon/bench player then I’m not getting it. Lowe hasn’t been all that good, but he’s proved how he is in the playoffs.
Now you trade him the offseason and you understand. It’s not like teams won’t call for him in the offseason if they’re calling now.

I don’t get what people are worried about. I don’t think the Braves are a great team, but they’ve got as good a shot as any team in the NL of making it to the World Series. As long as Uggla and Heyward pick it up in the second half, the hitting will be fine. Besides, haven’t you noticed that the Braves seem to be taking care of business? They’ve been making it look easy for quite a while. You should have some confidence in this club. They are going to the postseason.

Sometimes, JJ, you don’t want to pitch to contact. Sometimes, it would be nice to be able to reach back and hit 94 or 95 like you used to.
Also, Tommy hit 96 consistently when he was first called up. Now he hits 90, 91 consistently with an occasional 93, 94.
Is that by design?

This is just demoralizing and embarrassing and terrible.
One GD hit in the first inning and the game would have been over. No, we can only take the runs we’re given. The guy hits Schafer and he gets to second. Then we get the one hit in the inning.
Then the walk and the wild pitch and you’ve got two runners in scoring position with one out.
A base hit by either Gonzalez or McLouth and the game is probably over.
They can’t do it. That one hit all year. I know we have a good record but that one hit we just can’t ever seem to get to put the game away.
Two runs in the first inning in that situation is not enough against anybody let alone the Nationals.
Booting balls in the outfield is not okay. Making the same damn mistakes over and over is unacceptable.
Hanson and Jurrjens are allowed to have bad games. It would be nice if once they would get some support.

Trading Lowe makes a lot of sense. It would allow much needed room for Minor or Teheran. It opens up salary to aquire a much needed bat. In the playoffs, which I think the Braves are a lock for at least the wildcard, You go with 4 starters at the most. That would mean a rotation of JJ, Hanson, Hudson and Beachy, all that have been better than Lowe. That 5th starter is not needed in the playoffs but that bat would be. 15 mil can get you a bat. Maybe a 3-way trade with Detroit and Tampa Bay. Maybe we could aquire a BJ Upton and Detroit send a bat or prospect to Tampa Bay along with (wishful thinking) Mclouth. Upton will get 7 mil in arbition next year, covered by Lowes salary save.
Tampa can’t afford Upton next year and he is on the block. He has speed, range, power and a good arm. Not a bad outfield of Prado, Upton, Heyward and Schaffer. Then Prado could spell Chipper once in a-while when he comes back.

DETROIT — Tigers manager Jim Leyland said a decision on Austin Jackson and his injured left wrist could come on Tuesday.
Jackson hasn’t played since July 10 and hasn’t started since July 7 while dealing with what he said was inflammation in his left wrist.
The outfielder came in as a defensive replacement twice in Kansas City before the All-Star break, but the Tigers are holding Jackson off for a few days while they determine if he will be placed on the disabled list.

I should be mad that Burnett just got a hit off Sherrill, but
(1) we had some good hits from C-Mart earlier in the year, so all is fair…
(2) if Burnett has to run, he’s gonna wear out before next inning…
(3) he just ran himself into (what should be) a FC, so no harm done.
And then Sherrill finds a way to suck it up anyway, even with the free out.

Look, I try to stay positive, but remember when every ball Heyward hit almost killed somebody? Now you can pretty much count on a dribbler to the right side or an infield pop-up. I’ve never seen anything like it in baseball before and it is truly heartbreaking. I fear that there are only two possible explanations: Either he has a horrible work ethic or he’s a head case. Either way, it appears he’s not the Griffey we all saw a flash of and hoped and prayed for. Such a bummer.

back from the airshow and typical horrible use of the Pen again is gonna cost them. the same thing happened against the orioles. baltimore had a 3 run lead we take the lead and the next inning mr manager puts in proctor and walaa the orioles take the lead. and today. he leaves in sherrill to pitch to the bottom and espinosa comes up and one pitch gives them the lead back. sometimes u need to bring in your best pitchers earlier.. but no freddie cant do that.. once burnett had the lead back i said they arent scoring again. and here we are 5 outs away from yet another series loss to the average nationals. . Uggla swings at 2 balls not even close to being strikes . way to go Dan..

Bravos just need to send D-Lowe somewhere and get some payroll flexibility. Get Bourn, Pence, Cuddyer, or whoever… J-Hey, McLouth, and Jordan aren’t cutting it in the outfield. If we do make the playoffs, can you imagine how terrible these guys are gonna look against the Giants or Phillies pitching staff?

Upton avg 245 15hrs and 45+rbi’s…yea a low average but very productive. Yes he is like Jordan, good speed good defense and young. BTW Jordan may not be the best but he is giving a 100%. He hustle and plays excellent D. I am not saying Jordan is the answer he isn’t but maybe he isn’t the problem because since Mclouth went out and Jordan started the team playing way over 500

My man, Nate! Steve, you are correct in that they give you about the same. But, we can’t have both of them in the lineup and neither one of them should sniff the top 6 in the order. Either one would be okay if we had a better option at the other spot. I don’t think the Braves should stick with both of them if they can find a better alternative. Can’t have a guy with a .293 OPS and .610 OPS leading off!

I’ve been wondering about that nolie. Their top 10 prospects lists are very similar to ours – lots of pitchers and a couple of IFs thrown in. They have this one OF – Daniel Fields – who might be in their top 5 and hence not an even exchange for the big salary going that way. If we eat some of his salary, then it’s possible we get one of those borderline top 10 guys. How does that sound?

From Yahoo’s Second Half Stories to watch:
Craig Kimbrel, the Atlanta rookie whose manager is pushing the bounds of good sense. Fredi Gonzalez uses Kimbrel and Jonny Venters often because they’re so dominant. So was Billy Koch in 2002, when Oakland ran him out 84 times. He pitched two more seasons and was out of baseball at 30. Koch is the only closer in the last 25 years to pitch in more games than the 83 Kimbrel is on pace to throw. At 23, Kimbrel should have a long career ahead. Hopefully he’s built with one of those freakish arms that can hold up under the punishment most are no longer seasoned to withstand

I could never do this. Call me a sore loser, but the last thing I would want to do after losing a HUGE game like the world cup is to stay on the field while the other team gets honored. Exactly what I was thinking McFann. There is no where to play another bat. What, center? You give up prospects to get a guy that might only be here for the rest of this year? No way, don’t need another Tex deal. Just trade Lowe to free up salary and use that money in the offseason to upgrade at ss.

This is for you Joseph, just to let you know I have not forgotten you. In today(Sunday) KC game, Melky got 2 more hits, his BA still at .295 and our boy Frenchy had 2 hits, including 2-run HR, which raises his HR total to 13 and RBI total to 58! Coach if someone is dumb enough to take Lowe’s contract than all power to the Braves if they can deal him. I imagine it’s more artifical interest that’s being created. Lowe did step it up last year and got us in the playoffs. He is a big game pitcher, he showed that last year.

Dave, is there any talk among the higher ups in the organization about Heyward’s disappearing act? Surely the keen baseball minds of the Braves management have a better insight into exactly what is going on with the struggling phenom. Is there a hole in his swing? Is he soft? Does he work and practice hard? Does he put in extra time like Prado? Does he have a drinking problem (hey, who knows)? I’m just want the player who punished the baseball on a nightly basis a year ago back.

ESPN breaks down the GMs at tradin’ time
NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST
Club: Philadelphia Phillies
GM: Ruben Amaro
Style: Wins. Has traded or signed the best starting rotation in baseball while keeping the offensive nucleus together. Cares about the future as much as the present. A deal-maker who is honest and up front. Pat Gillick gets inducted into the Hall of Fame this week, his predecessor in Philadelphia has picked up where he left off.
Phillies last two years at the trade deadline
7/29/10: Acquired Roy Oswalt from Houston in exchange for Anthony Gose, Jonathan Villar and J.A. Happ.
7/29/09: Acquired Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco from Cleveland in exchange for Carlos Carrasco, Jason Knapp, Jason Donald and Lou Marson.
Club: Atlanta Braves
GM: Frank Wren
Style: First-class individual who continues the legacy of team president, John Schuerholz. Starting pitching and bullpen the key to the Braves success. The deal for Dan Uggla was huge this offseason and should pay dividends in the second half. Has not made a “Fred McGriff” type deal at a deadline yet, but knows how to build benches and bullpens already at championship levels. Trades for bats at every deadline, this year shouldn’t be any different.
Braves last two years at the trade deadline
7/31/10: Acquired Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth from Kansas City in exchange for Gregor Blanco, Jesse Chavez and Tim Collins.
7/14/10: Acquired Alex Gonzalez, Tim Collins and Tyler Pastornicky from Toronto in exchange for Yunel Escobar and Jo-Jo Reyes.
7/31/09: Acquired Adam LaRoche from Boston in exchange for Casey Kotchman.
7/10/09: Acquired Ryan Church from the New York Mets for Jeff Francoeur.
6/3/09: Acquired Nate McLouth from Pittsburgh for Charlie Morton, Gorkys Hernandez and Jeff Locke.
Club: Washington Nationals
GM: Mike Rizzo
Style: Deal-maker who made the best deal among “sellers” last year at the deadline in the acquisition of Wilson Ramos from Minnesota. Good evaluator of talent and yet still relies heavily on his top cabinet staff in particular, scouting director, Kris Kline. Will work deals persistently and has a knack of knowing when to close.
Nationals last two years at the trade deadline
7/30/10: Traded Cristian Guzman to Texas for Ryan Tatusko and Tanner Roark.
7/29/10: Traded Matt Capps and cash to Minnesota in exchange for Wilson Ramos and Joe Testa.
6/30/09: Traded Joel Hanrahan and Lastings Milledge to Pittsburgh for Sean Burnett and Nyjer Morgan.
Club: New York Mets
GM: Sandy Alderson
Style: Military. Legal. Methodical. Professional. First class. Always looks at the big picture.
Mets last two years at the trade deadline
7/12/11: Traded Francisco Rodriguez and cash to the Brewers for two players to be named later.
7/30/10: Omar Minaya was the GM and he traded Mike Jacobs to Toronto for a player to be named later.
7/10/09: Omar Minaya was the GM and he traded Ryan Church to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur.
Club: Florida Marlins
GMs: Larry Beinfest and Mike Hill
Style: Team work with owner Jeff Loria, president David Samson and assistant GM Dan Jennings. The group of five are aggressive, intelligent and scouting oriented. Highly respected for their drafts and their financial bottom-line accomplishments despite embarrassing attendance figures. Not huge players at the trade deadline.
Marlins last two years at the trade deadline
7/31/10: Traded Rick Vanden Hurk to Baltimore for Will Ohman.
7/29/10: Traded Jorge Cantu to Texas for Evan Reed and Omar Poveda.
7/31/09: Traded Aaron Thompson to Washington for Nick Johnson

Wonder if the deal will indeed be centered around Ordonez and Lowe? Braves free up $5M on a straight up deal and I think Ordonez’s contract is up at the end of the year. His season stats are not great, but for July (before today’s game), he is hitting .294/4R/6RBI/4BB. He adds to those numbers today going 1 for 2 with a 2B, a BB, and a R. Maybe we get him and both he and Uggla both have bounce-back second halves and our offense is a good as we all hoped? Any chances of that?

The way a trade of Lowe works with the Tigers is Braves pays half of this year’s remaining salary and a portion of next year’s salary,Tigers would give a bench player or a good prospect. 3 million savings this year could be paid toward any other trades made.

yeah, seems obvious that the major “Dip” in his swing causes him spring out of his swing causing him to swing over the top. I can only assume he has been told but refuses to make an adjustment.
Proving once again that watching TV is a really, really bad way to analyze swing mechanics.
You know, I can’t help it. I see a game like today’s and some evil forces me to go back and look at the mid-game this-team-blows comments. So it ain’t happening and he has some weird contract where he’s guaranteed big dollars next year if he’s traded or something.
All I know – is I thought about it too. But where in the hell do we put him??? I think we’ll be able to do much better with the freed up money from Lowe’s contract. We get low level prospects for him in the deal…maybe an BP arm or something and get salary relief. This is our first juicy rumor of the season. At least it makes for some good bloggin when there isn’t Braves baseball on….
I like Lowe. Always have – so i’m good either way things shake down. I will admit the elephant in the room – I think we need to improve our offense.
There still seems to be too many easy out in our line-up. I really like AGON but I have no confidence in him at all this year at the dish. McLouth still isn’t hitting consistently or Heyward for that matter…
I’m over looking Uggla here because he has looked much better and maybe he’s turned the corner…his average will be sh*t this year but let’s look at the HR and RBI and the end of the season and I think his numbers will be there….
Not sure what my point is here…but thank the lord Freddie Freeman has produced over and above what I think anyone expected. He’s been large lately can’t say enough about how much that has helped the team.

a corner OF rental makes some sense IMO, if it happens now. To replace Nate in LF now and then so we can use Prado at 3B some down the stretch to keep from over using Chipper. And we can afford a veteran making some bucks if it’s Lowe who is dealt. I’m betting Wren also includes a pitching prospect in a Lowe deal in exchange for a AAA SS or CF prospect. Plus he’s NEVER been on the DL in his life. NEVER. He takes the ball every five days no questions asked and his arm bonces back like no other.
In additon, he’s been a great mentor to guys like Medlen and Hanson and a great clubhouse guy – these are facts. You can’t simply replace a guy like Derek Lowe. Yeah maybe someone can come in with a lower ERA and get more K’s but some things you can’t replace.
And I won’t forget what that man did in September or in October. With any run support he win’s both NLDS games.
That’s what I like about Lowe to answer your question.

the guy has GOT to start showing some evidence that he can hit in the majors, and so far he has not. I’m disappointed in that since he does play a pretty decent center field. But he is supposedly healthy now and is still hitting like crap. Two more months of that is gonna seriously jeopardize his standing with the Braves

The facts are that Schafer has done ok recently. The phillies series really showed him up though. He hasnt played vs tough sides (him being called up was same time the braves had an easy schedule) though. So if his OPS is .610 vs low sides then we really cant afford to have him hitting lead off in the playoffs. I hope he turns it around, but I cant see it happening because he seems brain dead.

If Schafer is indeed about to be out of options after this year. Then we should move him at the deadline . And as far as Lowe goes if we get the Tigers to take on all if not most of his contract even if we don’t get anything good in return then we should move Lowe and go after either after BJ Upton or Hunter Pence.

Anyway I am pretty sure the consensus the other day is that he only has one more trip to Gwinnett left in him before having to clear waivers.
But, I guess it doesn’t matter about Schafer’s options, as I have him being sent to KC along with Minor and a minor league reliever for Lorenzo Cain. And as I am never wrong, that of course is bound to happen.

Texas – look at JJ’s stats this year. They are a statistical outlier. He has been really tough when they have had men on base. This isnt because he suddenly gets better stuff when people are on base, its basic luck. JJ is a top pitcher but he isnt an ace. We need to trade him now because we wont be able to sign him to a long term deal. Lets get some return on the guy and pack him off for CF rental and some prospects. It would improve us this year and alot in the future. I dont think JJ’s second half performance will be that far above what tehran/minor could give us.

Lowe is the only starter that makes sense trading. Mike Minor could come close or match Lowe’s numbers it would be a downgrade still in my opinion but still makes sense. Free up some money for this season to maybe add a more expensive bat before the deadline, while also getting money off the books for 2012 giving us more options during the offseason on how we can use the money saved by trading Lowe.
Looking at the roster now, CF is our only hole. Were still winning with Jordan in CF but its not like he’s putting up MLB caliber numbers. Corner Outfield will be filled when Chipper returns. Shortstop wont be upgraded as AGon’s defense is valued big time on this team. Also there isnt many options at SS that would be considered a upgrade.
Our options, 1. Trade for a Everyday CF (ex. Bourn) 2. Add a Versitile bench type player (ex. Carroll) 3. Upgrade the Bullpen (ex. Adams) 4. Or downgrade the Defense by getting a big Corner OF bat (ex. Pence) roll dice without a true CF.
Problem with adding a Pence **type** player, while we could possibly get by the rest of the season without a Real CFer, going into 2012 with 3 Corner OFers who suppost to play everyday is a Problem. It just doesnt make sense unless were willing to move Prado to the bench or whatever, Chipper will return to play 3B. Uggla is at 2B.
Best Option– trade for a CFer that will be here for atleast 2012 season or possibly longer.
Most Likely to Happen– Wren will tinker around add a reliever and bench guy. Still a nice upgrade over Lugo/Proctor.

I find it hard for Wren to make a bigger impact move because of Payroll restrictions. So either we give up more talent in a trade or take on more salary of the player were trading for. We all dont wanna deal our prospects, so we have to take on money. But to do that will have to trade Lowe first… So alot has to happen to get a more expensive bat. I don’t think it has changed that much, but it seems to be a blog urban myth. A highly dubious and overrated one I think.
Most are still going to try to get the out so that the pitcher leads off, and McLouth has always had good BA/OBP splits even at his worst during last season.
Hitting 8th has little or nothing to do with that.

Of course it has been. Because we have a segment of bloggers who don’t get nearly as excited and passionate blogging about the team that’s on pace for 95 wins and has a five-game wild-card lead when the team wins, as they do when they’re moaning and groaning during every loss or during the early, middle or late innings of any game in which the team trails and those folks prematurely “ballgame” it, again and again.
Maybe we can get an Emory behavioral-science professor to study that segment of our blog participants. Might be interesting to figure out what makes them tick.

WHAT IF…Atlanta dealt Derek Lowe and Alex Gonzalez to Detroit for Johnny Perralta and prospects? Salary wise, Atlanta would clear $15 million with Derek Lowe and $2.5 million with Alex Gonzalez. Johnny Perralta’s salary is $5.5 million this season and next season. That leaves $12.5 million for a “big name hitter” in addition to the upgrade at shortstop? You could turn around and deal prospects gained in the deal with Detroit to Houston with some prospects from within the organization for Hunter Pence. Pence makes $6.5 million in salary. You still have money free should you decide to get a bat for the bench. I think this makes sense because as much as it pains me to say it, Chipper Jones may not even hold out the rest of this season, much less next season. You move Martin Prado to third, Pence to left, Schafer stays in center and you are ready to move forward. The spot in the rotation vacated by Lowe would be filled by Brandon Beachy immediately. You could call up Mike Minor as your fifth starter until Julio Teheran is ready. If you find out that Beachy isn’t ready for the step up, you still have some money available in the trading of Lowe to address a free agent pitcher next year.

I don’t think the Braves need to acquire offense, because other teams asking price for SS or CF are too high right now, and there aren’t a lot of options. I mean Matt Kemp is awesome, but LA will not trade him or ask for the entire farm even though he is under team control for just next season. Hunter Pence, pretty decent, but doubt they’ll trade him. I’d rather give Schafer/Mclouth a shot.
If the Braves do trade Lowe, they should acquire a guy that can play SS/3B and can hit a little bit from the right side. Maybe Jeff Keppenger makes sense, and he’d be an upgrade over Lugo. And with the money that Lowe would free up, add a solid reliever like Heath Bell, Francisco Cordero, Huston Street, Leo Nunez, Brandon League, or David Aardsma

Keylargo, but still good defense, good leadoff hitter. He is not MVP caliber anymore, but he has been solid this year, still scares me when he comes up to the plate or gets on base, because he is a great base stealer. 2 years 7-8mill/per yr not a huge contract like the one Lowe got.
Nolee, Hicks hasn’t done anything in MLB. And he made a couple of errors whe he played. He’s only had 3 starts in his big league career and has played in 33 games. He’s pretty much established he is a horrible bench guy/ pinch hitter.
He has a rep to be a solid defender, and have you seen the numbers he is putting up in Gwinett, an 867 OPS(350 OBP) 14 homers and a 264 AVG, a home run every 14 at bats. Maybe if he played everyday when he gets called up he could put up some numbers like that, instead of getting 1 at bat every 3 games

Age, injuries, declining abilities are a concern, specially when one of his major assets is speed. He is still serviceable, but comparing Chipper and J-roll free agents years, you’ve got to remember Chipper had just won the batting title hitting over 360(364 I think), plus all his history with ATL a first ballot HOF. Also as reported earlier – it appears the Tigers aren’t the only team interested in D. Lowe. So it will come down to who will pay more of his salary.
I think we’ll pick up some of it obviously. But if we end up paying say half of what’s left owed to Lowe in his contract – I say keep him.
Why pay for a good portion of his contract while he’s pitching somewhere else. Keep him and try to trade him in the offseason.

(1) He has a year left and teams this year are looking for the end of this campaign only.

So it’s not my intention to blow the trade rumors surrounding Derek Lowe out of the water. I just want to shed some bright light on the subject with a quick history of how the Braves do business.
After reading all the information and doing about three hours of research, I then asked myself the pertinent question….when was the last time my Bravos traded a dependable, veteran starting pitcher right before the deadline.
And then it hit me, like a ton of bricks. The answer became crystal clear.
One simply has to understand how John Schuerholz, Frank Wren and company run this Braves franchise. They have as we all know build around starting pitching. However, what is lost to the masses is the reality of what our brain trust doesn’t do. They don’t trade starting pitching during the season…..ever.
But what clued me in was what the little voice in the back of my brain was telling me. Those Tigers are the answer to the riddle of why Derek Lowe is highly unlikely to be leaving Atlanta before November.
Which led me back to my original question. When was the last time my Braves traded a dependable, veteran starting pitcher right before the deadline? The year was 1987 and his name is Doyle Alexander. Yep, it’s been 24 years since such an improbable in season transaction took place. Of course we all know the end result….John Smoltz.
Some history is in order as pertains to the Alexander, Smoltz trade. Cox was the GM and Bobby was busy rebuilding the franchise from the ground up. Those Braves of the eighties stunk to high heaven and Cox had his hands full. Bobby rebuilt the minor leagues, drafted well and made some astute trades before heading back to the dugout.
So the circumstances surrounding 2011 are far different. Our franchise is in great shape. We don’t need pitching. But it is the last 24 years of history which lends itself in weighted fashion, tipping the scales in favor toward Derek Lowe going nowhere fast. As Frank Wren is not in the habit of trading dependable, veteran starting pitching during the season. So lets put this one to bed shall we, because it just isn’t happening. History tells as me as much.

“When was the last time my Braves traded a dependable, veteran starting pitcher right before the deadline?”
Are you really comparing Derek Lowe “circa 2011″ to the 1987 version of Doyle Alexander?
Come on Coach. Get serious. Now I’m not saying that Wren is going to give him away, simply to salary dump him like some have suggested. Of course, if he has a bigger trade say involving Delgado or Vizcaino which would require him to take on salary in the form of a bat? Then it’s possible.
But Derek Lowe is under .500, has an ERA of 4.30 and is scheduled to make about 22 more million dollars over the next season and a half.
You better believe that if Wren could insert Mike Minor or Teheran into the rotation for 1/33 of the cost…. he’s going to do it. Yup. That’s right. Both of those guys would likely net the same results for 1/33 of Lowe’s salary. Add to that, at this rate, even with a 4 man rotation in the post-season, Lowe is likely the odd man out. Certainly not in the roation if Fredi goes 3 man.
Minor’s ERA is 4.59 and he’s averaging 5.1 IP per start. Lowe is averaging 5.2 IP per start.
So the real question to counter your question, is when was the last time Wren or JS had 2 options in waiting in the wings that could like give the same result as an overpriced veteran that were both ready to step in?
But stop acting like the thought of trading Lowe mid-season is the same as trading Glavine, Smoltz or Maddux mid-season.
Is Lowe likely to get traded? Probably not unles like I said, it is part of a “bigger” plan. But it’s not impossible based on past decisions like you say.
Until the Tex trade, JS had never traded 5 prospects that had as high of ceilings as those prospects did for 1.5 years of a superstar either. JS pretty much NEVER traded elite prospects that were worth a damn for guys he didn’t think he could re-sign longterm.

N8
July 18th, 2011
4:39 am
Then I’m not crazy? LOL.
Obviously, during the off-season, I think he would dump him for little or nothing, simply to make room for either Medlen, Minor or Teheran. Assuming that Minor isn’t the arm going the other way in a soon to be mid-season trade for a bat.
But I’m also of the belief that he’s not going to trade his first 1st round pick as GM (Minor) unless it’s for a huge bat that’s under control for similar length that Minor would be under control for (3-4 more seasons).
I know it seems highly unlikely, but I have a gut feeling that if Wren’s intentions are to move Lowe this off-season anyhow, and he REALLY wanted to call up Teheran to start every 5th day in the next few weeks, that he might even consider moving Lowe to bullpen for stretch run and certainly use him out of the pen in the post-season.
It’s a tough call, because clearly he seems like the 5th best starter in the rotation at this time. But knowing how “money” he’s been in the post-season, it’s a toss up on whether he’d start him over say Beachy come playoffs.
But to just “move him” now to make room for Minor or Teheran is highly unlikely. Unless like we agree, it’s to make room to take on a contract similar to Lowe’s. In both dollars and length of deal.

Comparing Derek Lowe to Doyle Alexander? Yes. Because unlike the nonsense written by N8 I happen to actually know who Alexander is. His record was 5-10 when traded with an ERA of 4.13.
I also happen to do my homework, unlike N8 who makes it a habit to talk out his a-ss most of the time. I mean, aren’t you the same rabid blogger who swore up and down for days one end as to why Roger McDowell would be fired? That prediction didn’t hold water.
Apparently 24 years of history didn’t register with you at all. So I’ll be blunt. In two weeks, Derek Lowe will still be pitching for my Braves and you can take your anger issues to a shrink. Good day sir.

[if Wren] REALLY wanted to call up Teheran to start every 5th day in the next few weeks,
Think that’s kinda unlikely. Teheran threw 140 last year, and I doubt they would want him throwing September starter innings this year. Too possible that his arm would be fatigued at exactly the wrong time of year, that is, if you were willing to pile innings on him, in the first place.
In the minors, they can manage his innings much more effectively and maybe get him ready for next year. Everybody here but me wants to see him with the big club next year, right, LOL?

In a vacuum, a trade of Lowe seems chancy, in the context of this season alone. Regardless of any struggles this year, he’s still a vet who is more likely than not to answer the bell when it signals crunch time. I know youth must be served and all, but the thought of down the stretch with a couple of rooks at the back end does not a warm fuzzy feeling make.
Now, if Lowe is traded and there is some follow-on offensive move, that changes the dynamic. Then, any loss in run prevention ability might be made up by the addition of some run creation ability. Lots of ways to go about this whole thing, but I don’t know that a Lowe trade is a no-brainer.

I would assume that moving Lowe would be accompanied by a move for offense. It would also give Wren some flexibility to go after a guy now who is under contract for 2012. Right now, he’s probably limited to 2-month rental guys because I doubt he has much play at all in the ‘12 payroll.
But yeah, it’s a big deal to upset one of the best rotations in baseball, so I’ll back off my “in a heartbeat” sentiment.

Yes sir ncscoots. Come November I want Derek Lowe pitching for someone else, not because of the man himself, but because 15 million can be better spent elsewhere during the off season. Then Teheran and Minor can battle it out for the fifth spot during spring training of 2012. Not sure if it will be easier for Wren to trade Lowe now, or in the offseason. In the offseason, Detroit may take a step back and realize that they want more of a top flight arm to pair with Verlander. That may not be available to them now, so they might settle with a vet like Lowe. I think if Wren can get the team to take on enough money so he can go get a bat this month, then he’ll do it. I don’t think he trades any pitching prospects of value before 7/31.

If payroll remains around the 92 million mark, Wren isn’t going to have more than 8-10 million to spend this offseason. Even with Kenshin and McLouth off of the books. Arb. raises to Jurrjens, Prado and EOF take care of a good bit of that, and remember that we now have Dan Uggla getting a solid salary increase.

A little standings trivia this morning, somewhat inspired by the resurgent Pirates. Care to take some guesses, without looking them up?
1. Who are the only two teams that have NEVER won 95 or more games in a season? (Neither have ever finished in first place)
2. Besides the two teams from #1, what is the only other team that has NEVER finished in first place?
3. Of the remaining teams who have finished in first place at some point, who has gone the longest since doing so?
4. The Braves, Yankees, and Cardinals, all consistently good franchises in this era, all finished in last place in 1990. Who are the only two teams whose most recent last place finish was before 1990? This may surprise you. (All teams in MLB have finished last at some point)
