Jones’ knee sore again, hopes to avoid DL
SEATTLE — With his right knee barking a bit more in recent days, Jones was out of the Braves’ lineup Wednesday.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez wanted to rest the veteran third baseman so he’d have two full days off before the next game. The Braves are off Thursday before a three-game series against Baltimore starts Friday at Turner Field.
Jones has played much of the season with a small meniscus tear in his right knee, and wants to avoid arthroscopic surgery that would likely sideline him for about three weeks.
“It’s bugging me again,” said Jones, who is 3-for-26 with one double and two RBIs in his past six games. “If you’ve got torn meniscus, you’ve got torn meniscus. There’s not a lot you can do about it. Just have to stay on top of it [with treatment].
“If I have to go on the DL for it, I’ll probably get the surgery. But if can avoid it, I’d rather not.”
With Martin Prado on the disabled list, Jones is committed to playing through the injury as long as he can. Prado has been out for three weeks recovering from staph infection in his right calf.
Prado had surgery to clean out the infection and is awaiting clearance to begin running, once the incision is closed entirely. Incisions are left open to heal from inside-out after surgery for staph infection.
Even if Prado begins running and other baseball activities this week, it’s still uncertain if he’ll be ready to return before the All-Star break.
Jones has hit a modest .242 with 20 doubles and seven homers, but his 43 RBIs are second on the team to Brian McCann’s 48. Jones’ .391 average with runners in scoring position ranked fifth in the National League.

Chipper’s shown earlier this season that he’s nowhere near out of gas. But I really wish he’d quit being stubborn and get the surgery before the break so as to miss fewer games; he’d be MUCH more valuable to us the rest of the season the closer to 100% he is.

Didn’t mean they should trade frontline young pitching. Betemit might be available for a JJ Hoover or Erik Cordier. Doubt if KC would ask for much more. Could throw in McLouse too if they wanted. Point is that Chipper is going to likely be out a lot and Prado could stay in LF where there is a big hole. Betemit is a better fielder and hitter than Conrad or any other option at 3B.

We don’t need a freaking Wilson Betemit. Good grief; we’re 4 games back of first, LEADING the wild card, and if/when Chipper goes down, we’ll have Prado back in a few and he’ll slide right into 3B while we have Jordan Schafer and Nate McLouth in the outfield behind him. We’ll be fine. For once in his career with the Braves, we’ll be fine with Chipper hobbling.
Wilson Betemit. Please. I mean, what makes you think the Royals are interested in fixing what ails us by shipping off their reliable 3B/1B platoon guy when THEIR starting 3B has played all of 15 games thus far?

Chipper’s ability to stay on the field with two awful knees is pretty impressive but he’s probably going to have to bite the bullet and get the surgery. If the Braves are playing in October the knees are going to hurt more in cold weather. The good news is he will probably only be out 3 weeks if he does have the surgery.

As well he should; we get these “fan favorite” types who like to dredge up former Braves (who wants to go get ‘Satly,’ or thinks we should take a flier on Kevin Millwood still?) because they’re the only names they really know.
We don’t need another bit-part platoon infielder. We need Moylan back so we can rest our bullpen a little more, as well as Medlen. Venters is showing fatigue, apparently. Only a matter of time before O’Flaherty and Kimbrel do, too. We need Jordan Schafer to remember what got him in a rut (and not just the bum wrist); he’s not bunting and going for singles to get on-base; lots of pop-ups lately. We need Uggla to continue what he’s done the last few weeks, for Freddie to be what HE’S been thus far, and for Alex Gonzalez to learn how to hit again. All these things are do-able and probably will happen. We’re fine. With or without Chipper, we’re fine. I’d rather HAVE him, mind you, but that’s what depth is there for.

I agree, Chipper should get the surgery right now and not wait any longer. The 3 week rest in the middle of the season would do him a world of good anyway given his age.
Besides, it’s not like he’s been doing much with the bat lately anyway. Probably a comination of the knee and advancing age.
Between Conrad, Lugo and Hinske we could probably muddle through until Prado is ready. Betemit isn’t really needed.

The Braves would be better off trading for Jeff Keppinger, esp. with Alex struggling with the bat so much. Keppinger is solid against lefties, something we need, and rarely strikes out. He can play 2B, SS, 3B and LF too. He’d be a very good fit for our needs.

Hopefully he’s just waiting on Prado to get off the DL so he can take care of the surgery. Prado is the future at 3B anyways, might as well work him in there as much as possible. Chipper’s importance to the team is immeasurable and were really going to need him in the playoffs. Had we have been healthy last October, who knows what happens.

Chipper needs the “minor” surgery ASAP so as to be ready for the fall. That’s my opinion, but I’m willing to trust the Braves brass to work out the details for the best interest of the team. Bet Chipper is willing to do the same. He has in the past. This is a very good Braves team and could so something special this year, but for sure next year.

Here’s what the Braves need to do if they want to guarantee a post season spot…
1. Acquire Michael Bourn. (Schafer is a bum just like Nate was in the leadoff spot)
2. Trade Derek Lowe immediately. He just came off of a brilliant start. Sell him while he’s hot.
3. Force Chipper to get the surgery and rest up until he’s healthy.
4. Develop a new “torture shock collar” that would slightly electrocute Dan Uggla and Alex Gonzalez every time they swung and missed at a pitch low and outside.

He knows the team doesn’t have the player to replace him yet and he is holding off the surgery till Prado returns. WHEN he gets the surgery and rests he’ll be back as strong as he used to be. Geez. Should’ve retired years ago. Once he leaves, not only can Prado play third but we can get a solid LF and possibly improve other areas of the team. Not to mention the money we get back next year with Kawakami’s worthless hide gone and that 8 mil back in circulation.
We may make the playoffs this year, but we won’t win the World Series until we can improve multiple positions with the money old man Jones is (and has been) stealing. And it’s ALL about the World Series.

5th in the league with runners in scoring position, 2nd on the team in rbi’s only to a RED HOT McCann, a switch hitter, a battle at the plate for any pitcher and people still do not appreciate his contribution to the Braves? It is a HUGE one and he is just warming up and I hope he comes back for another year! He still has got game and a good one. Without no signficant injury this year, he will come back next year fully recovered and I will take 120 games from him ANY season! (So would most ALL other MLB teams) Keep on keeping on Chipper. You’re exactly right…but don’t hang that kind of attitude solely on Chipper. No one retires when they are owed that kind of money, athletes or otherwise. Guys like Griffey Jr. retire in the midst of a 2 million dollar contract…never when they are due 11 million or more. Pretty you won’t see Jeter retire “for the good of the team” either under the latest ridiculous contract he signed.

That quote by Chip is one of the best quotes in modern day baseball.
Chipper has twice taken a pay cut. He’s even switched positions for the betterment of the team. He’s had injury after injury and been the face and voice of this franchise for years. If anyone deserves to go out on his terms with that kind of cash next year, it’s Chipper Jones.
With that said, $15 mil coming off the books with these type of kids and arms on our roster, it makes fans want Chipper to hang them up. There’s times when I think he should. There’s been times when Chipper thought he should. But, it’s not about what we think or what we speculate. It’s in Chipper’s hands and he deserves the respect to make that decision. As fans, we should enjoy watching the Hall of Famer and trust that Chipper makes the right decision for the team, because he always has.

He got every last cent out of the Braves he could get and will continue to get every last cent he can get. I’m sure baseball is more important to Chipper – I do believe that – but money is still plenty, plenty important. And his own personal goals as a baseball player are far, far more important to him than the goals of the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

The guy is a true class act and is one of the best players to ever play the game. Just sad that he is close to hanging them up, there will never be another chipper jones in this game. Ive watched chipper since i was 5 years old, he’s been my favorite player since. you will never see a better such smooth swing that he has. Just enjoy it now because it’s almost that time. His name will be right their in copperstown right beside mickey mantle. Hell of a player.

Hey “Hall of Fame”, tell that to the family I know who have a child with a disability that were able to go down on the field for BP recently. Chipper would not give them the time of day. The Mets are not trading Jose Reyes, unless they fall into last place. They think they are in the wild card race so they’ll do like they always do, which is get delusional and feel the need to acquire someone. Worry about Reyes, in the offseason. Bourn and Keppinger, or Betemit are quality pieces for a team that has good players, who can produce like Prado and Chipper.

How can anyone think that the Braves need a 3rd place hitter who is barely hitting .250. (Some othe spot in the batting order – perhaps – but continuously being injured – in and out – has to be a distraction.
The great pitching for the Braves may be wasted — It is going to be difficult to compete with a 3rd place hitter at .250, the shortstop at .240, the second baseman below .200 — and getting terrible production from two of the three outfiedl positiosn (McLouth at .232, and Heyward and Schaffer both in the .220s. This is an absolute shame for the great pitching to be wasted. It is difficult to understand how the Braves fail in such a terrible way to develop/improve their hitters at the major league level. There may not be many really great hitting coaches but the Braves have had a significant need for one for years.

Chipper needs to get the surgery as soon as Prado gets back, Braves need him healthy by Sept. As for trades there is only one person I want to see them go get and that is Brett Liilibrdge.

That said I have some real concerns regarding something that has been going on for a few games now, and it is the very dangerous game Scharffer & McLouth are playing with each other. Now Schaffer is the CF and as such is suppossed to call for & get any ball he can. So far he has done well, sometimes verturing into McLouth’s terrritory to track down slicing balls. The problem is it appears that McLouth thinks HE is (or should be) the CF and is coming very close to crashing into Schaffer, even though it is evident that Schaffer is screaming his head off getting to the ball. I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but because it has happened quite a few times I will guess it is intentional. The result will be that at least one of them (or maybe both) will have to go on the DL to recover when (not if) the crash occurs. So fellows, think of the team and put your egos behind you!

Chipper Jones probably should get the surgery overAll-Star break. Wirh not many games played that week, and then maybe two more weeks to recuperate, that would have less impact on the team. Then, he would probably contribute a lot in the second half of the season, being healthy. Prado will probably be back after the break, so that would be a good time for Chipper to get the repair accomplished. As it is, he seems to be really hurting physically and not able to do what he wants to do on the field.

All you what have you done for me lately fans whats your average age, 12?Im in my fifties and i know tradition and history. when you had the best tandent in aaron and mathews. i was little but I remember. Chipper has alot of gas left in the tank and seems to get clutch hits when the team needs them and fact that hes one of the best hitters on the team. You should be worried more about ugla hitting and maybe a better outfield other than just heyward. when prado comes back they are going to need him more in the outfield . You go out and get a stick and it might be to provide more speed at the top of the lineup in someone with a higher obp than schafer. we need bull pen help to give the two nasty boys a break and not burn them out by august. you are going to go out and get a hitter maybe you get a short stop with speed to put at the top of the lineup. for god sake leave chipper alone. he not only contributes on the field and at the plate but is a much better fielder than conrad, who is only suited to come off the bench. moylan and medlan coming back in late july will give the pen a shot in the arm. Im glad that beachy is back. minor was like giving up a loss every fifth day.

Its not just batting average that you look at but hitting with runners in scoring position. wheres all this home runs that dan ugla is suppose to be hitting. Id like to see heyward and freeman taking more pitches and striking out less, the team would be better off. great series with the mariners this week and you should be basking in that. we have no control over what the phillies do unless we are playing them head to head. also play error free ball in the field. that would be nice

Chipper should have retired at least 2 years ago, when he was at least semi-healthy. The Braves are winning games mainly because of outstanding pitching, NOT because of the semi-cripple Chipper Jones. Please do Braves fans a favor and retire.

Chipper is 2nd in voting for 3b All-Star..he has been the corner stone of this team for years. He has switched positions for this team. He has re-done his contract for this team so they could sign others. He has played hurt. Through it all he has not complained. He has passed Mickey Mantle as top switch hitter in ML and other records. Even when not playing an on the bench…he is more important than half the Coaches and Mgr we have.
If he never plays another game he deserves his pay and his right to be in that dugout.
They don’t make many Chipper Jones…damn great player for Braves.

Chipper WAS a pretty good ball player, but like everyone, and that includes me and even you, Chipper’s “Glory Days”(As The Boss sings about), are way behind him, and he needs to put himself out to pasture, and let his dugout spot be taken by another young Brave, eager to show his talent. Every day Chipper hangs on, his legacy is tarnished.

This is for all the experts here who keep commenting that J-Hey would or should have something to say to Chipper…………If I can recall correctly Chipper never was or will he be in Orlando at extended spring training. The MAN is playing on a busted knee give him a break…. I am sure that in his mind him at 80% is better than Conrad or whomever else you would have play third base until Prado returns…Please load your brain before shooting off at the mouth!
It would seem that he is trying to keep team ahead of self at this time.

No, he is hurting the team. The Braves need someone they can count on in his position. He and his .240 BA has no business in the #3 spot. He might be a decent #7 hitter, IF, and that is a big IF, he can stay in the lineup. The best thing for all concerned would be his retirement. Baseball is a young mans game, and Chipper has not been young for several years.

Chipper is second on the team in RBI and in the top five in the league with runners in scoring position. Sure, he plays hurt, but that is the point. @CR, I have been a baseball fanatic since the first time I heard Dizzy Dean call a game, and I have forgotten more about the game than you will ever know. Chipper Jones is a ball and chain to the Braves. Oh sure, he has a few decent games, but all in all, he needs to go. The Atlanta Braves should be about the future and Chipper is all about the past. I compare this to all the puppy dog fans that keep looking at 1980 and Hershel Walker. That time is in the past, and so is the time of Chipper Jones. You do not win with has beens trying to hold on. You win with talent. The Braves have talent, but as long as Chipper Jones hangs around, he is taking a spot someone else should have.

JoeMac, I can give you the starting line up for the 1957 World Champion Braves without blinking an eye. Chipper Jones is a first ballot Hall of Famer and deserves respect. He plays hurt and still is a run producer. He could have gone anywhere for more money several times in his career, but he stayed with my favorite team for less. You would not know a real Braves fan if you tripped over one. I am old school about my team. It is not just the franchise, it is the faces on the team. It is so rare these days to be able to recognize one of those faces for his whole career. As far as I am concerned, Chipper can do no wrong. There is more to being a fan than winning. Loyalty counts for something and I appreciate it. The Braves have been terrible in the past. I have been a fan since they were in Boston. They have one of the best records in baseball with no offense but that is not good enough for you. You would make a much better Yankee fan. As far as I am concerned, you are no fan of the Braves.

You just showed your problem. Chipper can do no wrong to you. Just like Bobby. I am passionate about baseball. I know the Braves 1957 starting lineup, and also the Yankees starting lineup for the WS. I also know when I am watching a fading, washed up, former star player painfully showing that he is trying to turn the clock back to those “Glory Days”. Stick a fork in Chipper…he is done. It is sad to see him attempt to play. Loyalty or not, he is not a starting player anymore. TAKE OFF THOSE ROSE COLORED GLASSES AND YOU WILL SEE THAT.

Everyday his legacy is tarnished? I remember Griffey not being great in his last few years but I’m pretty sure I’m going to remember him as one of the greatest players in the game. Anyways about Chipper, sure he’s not a lock for 30 & 100 every year, but he is still a run producer and knows how to play the game. He’s a high IQ player and is valuable to the organization. He’s also the only piece left from the Braves ‘95 World Series title.

Everybody is aware that Chipper by all rights should be on this year’s All-Star team, right? Yes–his average is fairly low (although the .250-.260 range isn’t awful when you see what some others are hitting), but as of last week, he led NL 3rd basemen in homers and RBI. Everybody says, “Where would we be without McCann,” and that’s true–but Chipper’s been keeping up with Mac in the RBI race, and I’d say we’d be in sorry shape without Jones, too. I’m rooting for him to get one more All-Star berth.

hinske playing everyday ill pass, he’s on the bench for a reason and that’s because he’s probbly the best pinch hitter in baseball. Like every season we lose chipper and the braves don’t play well. Chipper is still a big force in the middle of our lineup, i believe he will turn it up a notch come the second half of this season.
