Braves quotes after sweep of Mariners

***FREDI GONZALEZ

“Derek Lowe was outstanding. I know he hasn’t gotten a win in a long time, but he did a terrific job. And I thought Rossy did a helluva job getting him through. Then we just got some big knocks when we needed to.”

“We were second in the league [hitting with runners in scoring position]; we talked about that before we started the series. Maybe the guys read the paper.”

Encouraged by what you saw the past couple of days?

“Yeah, and Bedard [Monday starter] ain’t chopped liver, either. We were able to score some runs. The thing I liked, all three games were different. We came from behind, and today we got ahead and kept tacking on some runs.”

On 10 singles off Hernandez

“I wish I could tell you that we sat here and that was an approach. I think it just happened. I think we got some pitches maybe up over the plate a little bit, and we found some holes.”

On Freeman hitting well against the likes of Halladay and Hernandez, former Cy Young Award winners

“It may be just a coincidence, but yeah, he bears down against those guys. It’s just a young player who’s going to have good weeks, then have a couple of days that are not so good. But his confidence is always good.”

Does Venters just seem a little fatigued?

“I think so. Roger and I have spoken about that already today. It maybe something that, without giving any secrets out, we may give him a couple of days. It’s something that we’ve got to manage it a little bit. And we’ve spoken about that. I hate to say anything about it because everybody reads the paper and you don’t want to give any secrets away to [the opponent in] the next series that’s coming up. But yeah, it’s something we’ve spoken about.”

“Not concerned about it, but we may have to give him a couple of days, just to recharge. He’s got, what, 46 appearances counting today? We may have to back off a little bit. He’s too valuable for us and we want him for the long haul.”

Had he already warmed up today, is that why you went ahead and used him in 5-1 game?

“What was it, 5-1? A 5-1 game and you had those left-handers coming up. We had Linebrink going just in case we popped another one [in the top of the eighth], and give Linebrink an inning. We didn’t and it was a 5-1 game, so go ahead and run Jonny out there.”

But you’re not saying he’s hurt?

“No, no. He’s fine. But we don’t want him to get to that point. So we’re going to have to manage that a little bit better, for our part.”

On Schafer taking catches in gaps in front of other OFs

“That’s when you run into trouble having three center fielders out there. You get guys that cover a lot of ground, and that’s something we need to talk to those guys a little more about, when you’ve got McLouth, and Schafer and Heyward. But it’s a nice problem to have, when you’ve got three guys out there that can cover a lot of ground.”

**DEREK LOWE

“Obviously you would’ve liked to have had a cleaner fifth inning after we scored. Brendan Ryan was probably the biggest at-bat of the game, falling behind him 3-0; you walk him they’ve got bases loaded…

“But all in all, Freddie had a tremendous game, we had a lot of big hits to keep momentum on our side, and ended a pretty good road trip.”

Did you feel this game was especially important, finish off a sweep and winning trip, etc?

“It’s not like during this [winless strea] at any time you go out there thinking negative thoughts. You think you’re going to win every single start. I think early on, looking at the way he [Hernandez] w as pitching, it looked like it was going to be one of those games where you wanted to not let it get out of hand. Early innings were important for me to keep it close, then we were able to score five runs off of him, enjoy and off day tomorrow, finish the first half strong.”

How frustrating was this stretch?

“Every game was a different type of frustrating. There were plenty of games throughout this time where I could easily have pitched better and won. I mean, let’s be honest. But, I mean, you can definitely enjoy the off day better, finally getting a win. Clearly it had been a long, long time, and everybody else had been pitching fantastic. So it’s good to at least get one on the board.”

***JONNY VENTERS

“My sinker’s been up in the zone. I don’t know if it’s because I’m tired or what, but I feel fine. I’ve been missing my spots and it’s been up in the zone. Falling behind [in counts] , and it’s just tough to .. it’s just been tough, you know?

What was homer on?

“Sinker. I had to throw a strike right there, didn’t want to walk the guy. I just wanted to throw a strikes and it went right over the plate, kind of right into his swing. He put a good swing on it.”

Do you feel like you don’t get as much bite or movement on some sinkers when you’re tired?

“I think it’s just the location. If it’s up, it doesn’t sink as much. My stuff hasn’t been real good on this trip. I think it’s just because my sinker’s been up. If it was down, I think it’d still have the sink, the same action. But I’ve been missing up, falling behind guys, and you can’t get anybody out like that.”

But it’s more tired, not sore?

“I feel fine. Just not making pitches, and they’re making me pay for it. That’s all.”

Do you think a couple of days off could help you return to form?

“I just think I need to make pitches. I don’t know if a couple of days off would help. It’s just one of those things, sometimes you go out there and can’t put a ball where you want to. You can’t do that up here [in the majors]. Even if you fall behind, you’ve got to make a quality pitch. I’m just not doing that.”

After giving up some cheap ground ball hits at San Diego, different here in Seattle?

“Here they were hitting balls hard. A lot of balls in the air, that tells me my sinker’s not real good, up or whatever.

“In San Diego I could have got out of that making good plays. Here, I haven’t been missing many barrels.”

***FREDDIE FREEMAN

“I was just trying to be short and quick, just trying to hit the ball to left field, because he had a really good two-seamer, good sink. If you try to pull that ball, you’re just going to roll over every time. So I was just trying to go up the middle, go the opposite way, and it worked out today.”

How does it feel after sweeping them, make long flight and off day more enjoyable?

“I mean, when you face Bedard, Pineda and him, you never thought you’d sweep a series against those guys. But we battled against those pitchers, came out on top, and our pitchers pitched great.”

On hitting well against former Cy Young Award winners like Halladay, Hamels and Hernandez?

“I don’t know if my concenrtration level goes up or what, but it’s fun. It’s a challenge for me. That’s what you look for.”

“I’m gonna be sleeping on that flight; I’ve got a little cold. Then we’ve got the Orioles coming in, so we’ve got to go out and battle them, too.”

On Lowe getting win

“He’s had some tough matchups, and we haven’t been scoring a lot of runs. For us to be able to give him five today, and for him to pitch six innings and give up one run, it’s great to see. We battled for him, and he battled for us, and we got a win for him.

“You never think you’re going to be able to score five runs off Hernandez. We put some things together and got some hits with runners in scoring position, the clutch hit by Brooksy, the wild pitch and two RBIs….”

***DAVID ROSS

On Lowe’s performance

“What really threw him off, I thought, was that we had a really long inning [in top of fifth]. He sat and it really kind of threw him off his rhythm. He’s a rhythm pitcher and he needs to stay in the flow of the game. Sitting on the bench that long, I thought it got him out of his rhythm.”

“And they were cheap hits. The one up the middle by Gutierrez was a good hit, but a couple of seeing-eye singles through the right side. Other than that, he pitched a good game. His stuff was really good today. I think he’s had good stuff and just a run of some bad luck. It was nice that we scored some runs for him. I know he’s happy.

“As a person, he puts so much pressure on himself. He wants to win so bad. He’s one of those guys, he makes a lot of money, but he don’t care about the money. He wants to win. He wants to do well for himself and his teammates, and that’s why I’m especially happy for him.”

On sweeping Mariners with those three starters they ran out there

“Really nice. We were just talking about that. We were 4-2 on this road trip, and if you look back, we didn’t hit in San Diego and almost snuck away with winning that series. To come in here and sweep this series – they’ve got a really good team. We faced very good pitchers and did a great job, and our pitchers, as always, carried us. But we did a good job of situational hitting. I thought we did a great job.”

Braves best road record in NL. Projection for JJ is 20 wins for the season and projection for Hanson is 18. And, both have missed time with injuries.

CF should take everything he can reach. McLouse doesn’t have nearly the range of Schafer, so he couldn’t do that. Braves now have complete defensive CF, one who has range, speed, can track fly balls, and can throw. To the bench Nate should go, when Prado returns or to the other league in a trade if anyone wil bite.

Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring up Gearin for a few days before the break. He is better than Sherrill and Proctor already. He can give Venters and Kjmbrel a break. So. let’s send Ramirez down until the break or DL Chipper for surgery.

Jorge Cantu has been released. Plays 3rd, 1st, Lf and has played for Fredi and bats right handed tho I’d rather have betemit. McLouth can’t or won’t throw everyone kpws that. Leave him in Seattle bring back Chone Figgins, speed, leadoff, CF, 3b and stop in San Diego and pick up Ludwick. Problems solved. Why have all the minor league talent if you can’t put it to use. Only 5 can be starting pitchers.

Finally! Fredi admits Venters is tired. Lets hope he gives him the rest he says that he will. However, both Bobby and Fredi have said things like this in the past and quickly abandoned this approach, saying a given game was too important. Let us hope that my prediction that continuing to use Venters this way would wear him out by the end of July and make him useless for the stretch drive was not wrong because he is worn out by the end of June.

Not offended. Just annoyed. He sounds so scripted in his interviews instead of just being real. What are you gonna do though? Unfortunately, he’s going to be the manager for a while and we have to put up with it. We know he wont be fired. Thats just not the Braves’ way. Cant admit their wrongs.

Look, Im just a helluva fan and want my team to win championships. We have a helluva team, and should be able to get it done. All the pieces are there. We had a helluva good hitting coach in TP last year but Fredi had a helluva good idea to bring in his own guys to mark his territory. And might I add, Parrish is doing a helluva job.

Helluva.

KK pitching in Mississippi tonight. 2 innings–5 hits–5 runs–1 HR. Behind 5-0 after 2. Big big mistake by Wren. Along with McLouse mistake. That will clear 13 mil for next year. Then, add 2.5 by not bringing Gonzalez back, 3 mil for not bringing Linebrink back, 1 mil by dropping George Sherrill. That is 19.5 mil for next year.
Wren’s problem this year is he has basically no money unless he can trade Lowe, Gonzalez, or McLouse now. So, he might be forced to settle for Cantu or Betemit.

The Braves could use another outfield bat with Martin Prado currently on the disabled list. Josh Willingham has a track record of hitting well in the National League East from his time with the Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals.

The Braves have reportedly already checked in with the A’s about his availability and are a logical fit for Willingham if he does not stay with the Athletics for the remainder of the season

Him along with Reed Johnson(Cubs) are who the Braves are interested in adding!!!

It was a great joy to go to these three games here in Seattle and watch the Braves represent. Today I also got to take my two boys, fully dressed in Bravos gear. I would say around 40% of the crowd was supporting Atlanta during each game, which is also clear when you see that the M’s draw around 15K for most weeknight games and each of these games drew 25-30K. Thank you Superstation of old; what a marketing weapon that was, and it is so missed now.

The Mariners and the Braves have a lot in common, but the Braves have one huge advantage right now in terms of one of the hottest hitters going (McCann).

Some thoughts on the series:
1) McCann for MVP. I saw an SI list yesterday where he wasn’t in the top ten which is shocking. He got good swings all series long and just looked in control. Also a great throw to nail Kennedy at 2B yesterday.
2) Freeman swings with no fear, it’s great to see and bodes well for him long term.
3) Heyward looked overmatched mostly. Rolling so many weak ground balls to 2B. He finally hit one or two line drives, but wow what a difference a year makes. In fact, most of the rest of the lineup looked overmatched but the M’s pitchers have that effect on a lot of teams, including good ones like the Phils, Red Sox, etc.
4) Great work by Hanson yesterday rallying when I thought he was going to get knocked out early. He had nothing in the first 3-4 innings yesterday. And then the Braves finally drew some walks; what a difference as they kept that going today against Felix.
5) Lowe was the best starter in the series for either team. Efficient, good command. Where has that been the past month?
6) I am a Fredi supporter, but Venters should not have been in that game today after pitching yesterday and twice over the weekend. In the AL park, Fredi did not need to change pitchers every inning. Why take O’Flaherty out today?

I am lucky to be in Denver for work in mid-July when the Braves are there, hopefully I can get to a game there too.

Go get 300 hitting (dawg,Atlantan) Jeff Keppinger for next to nothing and let him sub for Chipper, Alex “swing batter”, or Uggla every night.

jbone….”they have not found there(their) way or have an idnetity???? Do you not remember the 90s? Dominant pitching and slightly above average hitting does win. Yes yes yes 1 world championship, but I think that had a lot more to do with BRAVES winning it in 2nd week of September and others having to fight and claw. We do have an identity. It is the BEST PITCHING ROSTER IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES.

@arrowhead………..WHY WOULD A DIVISION LEADING TEAM GIVE UP THEIR 2nd BASEMAN FOR NEXT TO NOTHING????? Are your drunk? I am just curious…..what would you give up in our organization to the Rangers for Keppinger? Please do tell. And please to tell why you are so damn smart to know that A DIVISION LEADING…..WAS IN THE WORLD SERIES LAST YEAR TEAM WANTS TO GIVE AWAY THEIR EVERYDAY 2nd BASEMAN FOR NEXT TO NOTHING??????????

I mean freaking come on ……………EVER HEAR OF COMMON SENSE GUYS?

No excuse for using Venters today. Just dumb. Its pretty clear being tired is an issue when he says over and over again he cant get the ball down. On the flip side, I was super thrilled to see Lowe step up and have the team give him some support. This team being 12 games over .500 is truly remarkable with all that has happened (or not happened) and as Fredi would say I have to tip my cap to ‘em. McCann is clearly an MVP level player. Freeman is cruising toward ROY. JJ is a strong candidate for the NL CY Young award. There’s some great things going on in this ball club. Even Uggla is showing signs of what he is capable of.

What I am really concerned about is Gonzo. While Uggla is finding his way Gonzo is losing his. Don’t know whats wrong with him but he just seems overmatched everyday and has no pitch recognition or discipline. He cant even bunt. Think the dude has lost all confidence at the plate. Not good.

But overall the final months of the season should be exciting and the Braves have put themselves in a nice position to do some serious damage and make a deep run. But first things first sweep those pesky O’s.

Braves for Life;I agree; should be an exciting second half as the other wild card teams have real issues; need to get Gonzo going and get some more bench help (Julio Lugo-really??)

I was thinking of Kinsler sorry. What are you going to give up arrowhead for him then since you are obviously smart enough to be the next manager/gm/owner of this team? I bow to your knowledge. So from what I read here everybody is so intelligent……….we get Keppinger and Bourne from Houston for………….? NO TEAM GIVES A GUY AWAY FOR NOTHING……….at minimum it is prospects………..so what damn “prospects are you going to give up??????????????/ i WOULD LOVE TO HEAR THIS.

Please fill in the blank.

Maybe here is an idea………….THIS ISN’T FANTASY BASEBALL. There are people smarter than you and me that run all 30 organizations in the majors for a damn reason.

Knowing Houston the last several years, they’d take Lugo and Kawakami…

Steve34 and Dan Struggla….

You are both Dennis Reynolds cousins I understand….the family tree is ignorance gone to seed….

I would pay to see Steve34 call Chipper a “lil bitch” to his face…………….

Braves4life……..I agree and disagree with the Venters thing……..He was already warming up…….off day tomorrow….I would go with him also. Venters in his own words said he didn’t make pitches….that happens…..sometimes pitchers just don’t have it. But I go with the horse that brought me when I know I have an off day tomorrow and it is also an early game today. I would rather not seen him last night than today….just my opinion.

@arrowhead….Julio Lugo is a defensive guy. And I quote an unnamed GM from ESPN.com on Buster’s blogs………….”Julio doesn’t have the range he used to, but if he touches the ball………YOUR OUT.

Lugo and KK? Do your know how much KK makes? I am sorry I don’t mean to disrespect you but………you have got to be kidding. Lugo in a package I could see maybe………….but KK? THERE IS NO TEAM IN THE WORLD THAT WOULD TAKE KK. Have you seen his salary?

Houston is rebuilding, we can agree on that. They want prospects not contracts that will not help them. We would have to give up Tehran or Delgado at the very least to get anything from houston. If we lucky Minor only. But no way KK and Lugo for Keppinger or anybody of value.

The move I think we should make is trading Alex Gonzalez for Alexi Ramirez. What do you think were obviously gonna have to give The White Sox a prospect but I figure it won’t cost too much and their salaries are similar and Ramirez is a better hitter

oh is that what you are upset about is the money….okay how many games have you attended this season…I will say 2 at the most…so lets just say your $400 went for Mccann and I paid for Uggla, so you will SHUT THE HELL UP!!!

You are paying 200 bucks to get into a Braves game? On another note, Wanna buy my 93 Celica? It won’t run all the time but it has a cd player.

@ J-Man

Not a bad idea but Gonzo is too good at short. His stellar defense at the games toughest position makes up for his sub-par offensive stats. I’m good for using that prospect you are talking about, along with Schafer and sending them to Houston for Michael Bourn.

I mean we just SWEPT the Mariners. You would have thought we had been swept, our bullpen blew another game, and we have one or the worst records in baseball. It’s crazy to sit here and read some of the stuff people put on here. This is exactly why we are made fun of around the country as far as being a sports town. We have the SECOND BEST record in the NL by THREE GAMES. Oh yeah and we have the THIRD BEST RECORD in baseball. Damn people be happy we can win games and are a legit contender. Oh yeah and we have a winning record against the Phillies this year. I can’t wait for the trip to Philly right before the allstar break. A perfect way to gain some ground and momentum going into the allstar break. GO BRAVES.

Yeah, Nate’s gotta get outta Jordo’s way. Either he can’t hear Jordo screaming, or he’s being a bit obstinate, ornery in his old age. I don’t know, I really like seeing Schafer patrol the outfield. I just wish he could hit lefties, maybe throw more bunts down like he did today. It’s great though having two speed guys on base at the same time, and then Heyward hitting a bullet and I imagine it’s like a video game watching the guys spin around the paths.

I like how the Braves are winning these days. It’s not just in one way, as we saw in the Seattle series, it’s in a number of ways. I like how Freddi is doing things a bit differently, the Braves I saw in the Seattle series do not look predictable or tired. They look sharp in many ways, and faster than previous teams. This is a good thing.

Chipper put himself in a little pickle by calling out Heyward…he had to stay in the lineup injured…I hope his point was made and he can sit for a while. We are a different team when he is healthy…the season is long…either rest or retire Chip…we need a RH bat…and RH you are really bad right now!!!

Fellow Braves Fans Who don’t Hate Chipper: Forget it. It is pointless to carry on a discourse with the Chipper Bashers. As I’ve said before, no amount of reason, fact, or sense of fairness will sway them. I suspect people of their ilk were bashing even the great Dale Murphy in his final playing days.
