McFann, I thought this article might have made you gain more respect for Ross, for being a stand up guy.
June 26th, 20114:48 pm
even though we didnt score it was a good inning making him go deep in the count like that and hes on a 70 pitch count
I wish Schafer could reach base more frequently. His plate discipline has eroded recently.
McFann :Ô: :Ô:
June 26th, 20114:49 pm
Well it did!
But I’ve always respected Ross…I just get annoyed when people try to make him out to be SO MUCH better than BMac and they just gush over him—in fact, in that way Ross and I are a lot alike!
.595 and sinking fast
June 26th, 20114:50 pm
Sit on down Lueggie
Once Prado returns, McLouth’s back to CF and Schafer’s back to AAA
Maybe Schafer would reach base more if he’d hit it on the ground sometimes…still swinging for the fences looks like to me..looks like no one can get through to these guys.
I’m sorry DOB, but if the Twins are moving an ALL STAR catcher like JOE MAUER to 1st base…moving Brian McCann to 1st base on the Braves isn’t that far fetched.
True we have Freddie Freeman there right now he’s a rookie lets see how things play out the next few seasons. If Mac starts to get injury prone playing catcher and Freeman turns into a good but not great 1B…I can’t see a reason why you wouldn’t try moving Brian McCann to 1B…things have to “fall” into place for that scenario but it is not out of the realm of possibility.
With all due respect to David Ross of course.
June 26th, 20114:51 pm
Just need Huddy to get in a groove, will get to there pitcher.
More Mac. For those who say Mac’s a bad defensive catcher, under what criteria?
Based on defensive RAR for 2010-2011 (so far), know who’s better of everyday catchers:
Ruiz, Y. Molina, Torrealba, Wieters, Olivo, Mauer, Hanigan, Martin, Ramos. That puts him in the top 3rd defensively.
Stop the hating, without any real proof.
Ross is like Hinske, excellent guys to have on the bench so they don’t get overexposed…
They have more value in that situation than they likely would playing regularly
Well, if Lopez was a Brave today, then you wouldn’t have to worry about people gushing all over Ross. They’d be all over Lopez.
June 26th, 20114:52 pm
Hudson’s pitches are up..alot..doesn’t bode well unless he can get them down
Don’t expect the baves to score any runs today or for the next week for that matter, they got their months quota yesterday.
June 26th, 20114:54 pm
Supe – the Twins are moving Mauer because he can’t stay healthy at catcher. That’s not true of Mac. What, do you want to play a rock at Catcher because you can’t afford to lose his bat?
As I said, a lot Mac’s value is that he plays catcher, and you’d lose some of that if you moved him to an offensive position (LF or 1B). And puhleaze, Freeman is the first baseman.
with SD getting 11 on Friday and the Braves 10 on Saturday, this game might go into Monday B4 anybody scores
Smart Jay: No ones hating, just giving opinions.

Tremendously informative article in New York Times Sunday Magazine about the effect of age on athletes.Article focused on Jeter but basically revealed the thoughts of medical field that for a Major Leaguer it is all downhill after 30 and pretty quickly. The only reason things had changed in last 20 years was the obvious use of steroids and its ability to temporarily delay the process. After reading the article you had to realize the Yankees have to see themselves as idiots after signing Jeter to his deal. After Jeter’s and others inevitable deterioration it will become obvious to these owners that multi year extensions for a 32 0r 33 year old player are insane. The party is basically over and it ended suddenly unless the players are able to come up with the next new thing in avoiding detection. Great article.
June 26th, 20114:56 pm
way past that point IMO Tfor, and as an old scout I was conditioned to luv speed. but you gotta have sumthang to go with it….
June 26th, 20114:57 pm
I thought you were one of the guys who preached small sample size, Nolee?
Hugo Z Hackenbush
June 26th, 20114:58 pm
The spectre of McClouth in center is looming again. Thanks a lot, Schafe.
June 26th, 20114:59 pm
David Ross gives a great interview. The Braves seem to have a lot of guys like that.
Now lets get to them here, boys.
Great Blog DOB. I always thought the idea of moving Mac to another position was idiotic. I think Ross summed up his abilities & gave it to ya straight.
I seriously would swap Nate & Schafer in the order. I know some of you think Schafer is somehow a plus leading off, but the stats just are not backing that up.
June 26th, 20115:01 pm
Another no hitter?
Wow, the way this game is going, Huddy might have to hit another homer in order to win.
Chris from the Rock
June 26th, 20115:02 pm
This might be Luebke’s last inning. Black has him on a 60-70 pitch count limit.
Yeah, nolie–probably a good 100 pts below what would be acceptable. I was trying to be diplomatic when there was really no cause to be. .215/.295/.300 ain’t gonna get it done.
June 26th, 20115:03 pm
Can you do MORE of a wind-up next time?
Just missed it.
*acceptable on a minimal level.
they’ve been outs..but I like Uggla’s swings today
I am monty, and I am over-exaggeratin’ a bit for effect, but Schafer looks like crap. he is not even the same physical specimen that he used to be. and quite truthfully I have always thought he was over-rated. Like Betemit he had basically a great one half a season at AA ball and was hyped to death ever after. JMO of course
June 26th, 20115:05 pm
Do we really want to get into their bullpen..aren’t those guys pretty good too?
How long before they start showing BMac in these ASG commercials?
I guess he’s only been to it 5, going on 6 years in a row…can’t expect them to jump the gun quite this early…
June 26th, 20115:06 pm
Patriotic salute a nice touch.
June 26th, 20115:08 pm
that’s the Huddy I know…
Rizzo just got owned MLB-style.
June 26th, 20115:09 pm
Why does the radio keep going to commercials in the middle of at bats? crazy
June 26th, 20115:10 pm
Wondering when Huddy will have a clean inning.
June 26th, 20115:11 pm
Alright, lets get Huddy some runs!!
June 26th, 20115:12 pm
Looking good, Timbo!
Huddy got in the groove I asked for ,now let the bats begin.
We got to push one or two across the plate this half inning–I want to drive to the store with a smile on my face—come on, “make my day!”
Trey Well, if Lopez was a Brave today, then you wouldn’t have to worry about people gushing all over Ross. They’d be all over Lopez.
June 26th, 20115:13 pm
The Ross is leading off. A good time for him to hit a 3 run jack.
Bat M. The Ross is leading off. A good time for him to hit a 3 run jack.
June 26th, 20115:14 pm
For years now we have been searching for a bonafide leadoff hitter, and we finally get a guy with speed, great arm, good defense and oh, by the way, his numbers at leading off the game are, .417,.500,.542,.1.042 and you would rather replace him with Nate who is .195,.268,.343,.611 at leading off the game? Talk about your major suckage. Really? Not to say that Jordan doesn”t need to improve at the other times in the game, he does, but this was thrust upon him due to injuries and he’s only had around 100 big league AB’s in the past 2 years, but man oh man, how could he do any better at being the leadoff hitter? C’Mon Man.
June 26th, 20115:15 pm
Typical A-Out AB. Ist pitch hacking with a popout.
June 26th, 20115:17 pm
Mauer has a 162 game average of 15 HR/92RBI and a .880 OPS. As a 1B in 2010, there were 23 1B with more HR’s and 9 with better OPS and RBI totals. As a catcher, he’s an all-star, as a 1B, he’s better than average, but not a star.
@Bat….local advertising spots seem to fall into an illogical transitivo–”F” the game, right!
June 26th, 20115:18 pm
Huddy needs to go yard.
In the words of Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker)….One hit….that’s all we got…one god da#@ hit.
June 26th, 20115:19 pm
John Leonard – I was exaggerating. Lighten up. Opinions are fine. They’re better when they have some basis in fact.
June 26th, 20115:20 pm
Re: Lead off guy…..it’s JMO–We stayed with Nate a while, give Jordan a bit more time–he’ll be okay.
The answer to the trivia question: Roberto Alomar and Marcus Giles.
Ross is a class act. He is a valuable part of this team, like Hinske. Ross knows his role, has accepted it, and is comfotable with it. He’s great.
McCann is an absolute stud behind the plate for the Braves. He is having an MVP year. Not just for the way his offense has carried the Braves at times this year, but because he has handled the best overall pitching staff in MLB.
People are way too critical and unappreciative of McCann. Fans need to be thankful that the catcher position is a position of no worry and is set in stone for, hopefully, many years to come with McCann. Fans are seeing, in my opinion, a future hall of famer at catcher. There is a future hall of famer at third base and we have seen future hall of famers on the mound in Braves uniforms.
It is great to be a McCann fan and a Braves fan. Now, let’s get some runs and win this ballgame.

June 26th, 20115:21 pm
As a catcher, he’s an all-star, as a 1B, he’s better than average, but not a star.
184 million dollars, man o man.
June 26th, 20115:24 pm
.417,.500,.542,.1.042 and you would rather replace him with Nate who is .195,.268,.343,.611 at leading off the game? Talk about your major suckage. Really? mont
wow, that’s pretty funky. you are maintaining that he will continue to lead off a game at twice the rate that every other at bat?thats ridiculous. you do realize how incredibly small that sample size is for just leading off a game, and surely must understand that it will soon go down in line with the rest of his stats. there is NMIH that he is gonna continue at that level leading off when he sux so bad every other at bat . Lets revisit those numbers in two weeks.
June 26th, 20115:25 pm
every time it happens I’m thinking, wait, what happened, what did I miss. nutty
Leubke is the greatest pitcher in MLB history….How else could you explain his awesomeness?
I totally agree!!!
Well, at 1B Mauer would probably post better numbers; more at bats would lead to higher HR, RBI totals, for one thing, and less distraction/responsibility would probably boost his overall hitting.
But, point taken. He wouldn’t be an elite-hitting 1B.
June 26th, 20115:26 pm
Another DP needed, guys.
Two reasons given for moving Mauer to 1B…
1) He’s still too injured to be an effective catcher.
2) Morneau is still out for quite some time.
Neither of these is a problem the Braves have.
jungleland sax solo
Wife saw San Diego scenes when game first came on. Moments ago I told her it was 70 degrees out there. K, I made up a temp. Even so…she cracked..we get to go again, on her dime, after first of year.
YAYYYYYY….San Diego…Go Braves.
June 26th, 20115:27 pm
That certainly sucked.
You CATCH that ball Mister!
No I’m no catcher, nor have I done extensive research on the topic, but wouldn’t moving McCann from behind the plate keep his knees/legs fresher and potentially extend his career?
Did Huddy watch Jair last night and decide to duplicate it?
Jason should have totally had that ball
June 26th, 20115:28 pm
Schafer has an OBP in the 290’s. That’s what you want from the guy who will get the most plate appearances in a given span of games? No Nate isn’t leaps & bounds ahead of him, but his is around .330 if recall. That’s still HUGE difference long term.
All Schafer is going to give you over Nate is a bit more speed & flash in his few & far between extra base hits.
Great game yesterday by JJ. Hudson has been crazy wild but efficient today.
June 26th, 20115:29 pm
Of course I missed yesterday’s offensive eruption…lol
LAG – exactly. The Mauer move is of necessity. It’s not an example for Braves to follow. Also, McCann’s 162 game numbers compare much better than Mauer’s to 1B, still, it would be like trading the best catcher in the NL (at least) for a 5-8 1B. People here would rip Wren to shreds if he made a deal like that, rightfully so.
June 26th, 20115:30 pm
Why is it Heyward has so much trouble tracking and moving towards balls. That should have been a easy catch if he’s coming in hard for it.
more than likely they will both be gone next year and we can argue about sumthang else
June 26th, 20115:31 pm
Huge K for Huddy!!!
even better question. why do the defensive metrics like him so much when Braves fans hate him so much?
June 26th, 20115:32 pm
Good points Re: maximizing value by position, Jay.
June 26th, 20115:33 pm
nolee, I don’t think the metrics do like him. Fangraphs doesn’t like his D at all.
Because defensive metrics is a game made up by adults who like to play like children.
hate is an awefully strong word isn’t it?
June 26th, 20115:34 pm
still having some trouble keeping the ball low enough pitch after pitch it seems
June 26th, 20115:35 pm
love the Prado ad!!!!!
June 26th, 20115:36 pm
Hate is a strong word. I try not to use it.
Anything exciting, other than this 0-0 score, happen in the past few innings? (Game has been on my computer but I’ve been cleaning and not really paying attention)
June 26th, 20115:37 pm
the ones I read do Mike and Fielding Bible panel voted hin third or so last year.
they had him +10 last year and +2 so far this year
Our bats made Leubke look like Sandy Koufax. Ouch!
June 26th, 20115:38 pm
I can say one thing,,, Lowe didn’t disappoint the other night. Talk about a total waste of a spot in the rotation, the dude absolutely drives me crazy.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
