I’m sorry DOB, but if the Twins are moving an ALL STAR catcher like JOE MAUER to 1st base…moving Brian McCann to 1st base on the Braves isn’t that far fetched.

True we have Freddie Freeman there right now he’s a rookie lets see how things play out the next few seasons. If Mac starts to get injury prone playing catcher and Freeman turns into a good but not great 1B…I can’t see a reason why you wouldn’t try moving Brian McCann to 1B…things have to “fall” into place for that scenario but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

With all due respect to David Ross of course.

More Mac. For those who say Mac’s a bad defensive catcher, under what criteria?

Based on defensive RAR for 2010-2011 (so far), know who’s better of everyday catchers:
Ruiz, Y. Molina, Torrealba, Wieters, Olivo, Mauer, Hanigan, Martin, Ramos. That puts him in the top 3rd defensively.

Stop the hating, without any real proof.

Supe – the Twins are moving Mauer because he can’t stay healthy at catcher. That’s not true of Mac. What, do you want to play a rock at Catcher because you can’t afford to lose his bat?

As I said, a lot Mac’s value is that he plays catcher, and you’d lose some of that if you moved him to an offensive position (LF or 1B). And puhleaze, Freeman is the first baseman.

Tremendously informative article in New York Times Sunday Magazine about the effect of age on athletes.Article focused on Jeter but basically revealed the thoughts of medical field that for a Major Leaguer it is all downhill after 30 and pretty quickly. The only reason things had changed in last 20 years was the obvious use of steroids and its ability to temporarily delay the process. After reading the article you had to realize the Yankees have to see themselves as idiots after signing Jeter to his deal. After Jeter’s and others inevitable deterioration it will become obvious to these owners that multi year extensions for a 32 0r 33 year old player are insane. The party is basically over and it ended suddenly unless the players are able to come up with the next new thing in avoiding detection. Great article.

For years now we have been searching for a bonafide leadoff hitter, and we finally get a guy with speed, great arm, good defense and oh, by the way, his numbers at leading off the game are, .417,.500,.542,.1.042 and you would rather replace him with Nate who is .195,.268,.343,.611 at leading off the game? Talk about your major suckage. Really? Not to say that Jordan doesn”t need to improve at the other times in the game, he does, but this was thrust upon him due to injuries and he’s only had around 100 big league AB’s in the past 2 years, but man oh man, how could he do any better at being the leadoff hitter? Mauer has a 162 game average of 15 HR/92RBI and a .880 OPS. As a 1B in 2010, there were 23 1B with more HR’s and 9 with better OPS and RBI totals. As a catcher, he’s an all-star, as a 1B, he’s better than average, but not a star.

Ross is a class act. He is a valuable part of this team, like Hinske. Ross knows his role, has accepted it, and is comfotable with it. He’s great.

McCann is an absolute stud behind the plate for the Braves. He is having an MVP year. Not just for the way his offense has carried the Braves at times this year, but because he has handled the best overall pitching staff in MLB.

People are way too critical and unappreciative of McCann. Fans need to be thankful that the catcher position is a position of no worry and is set in stone for, hopefully, many years to come with McCann. Fans are seeing, in my opinion, a future hall of famer at catcher. There is a future hall of famer at third base and we have seen future hall of famers on the mound in Braves uniforms.

It is great to be a McCann fan and a Braves fan. Now, let’s get some runs and win this ballgame.

wow, that’s pretty funky. you are maintaining that he will continue to lead off a game at twice the rate that every other at bat?thats ridiculous. you do realize how incredibly small that sample size is for just leading off a game, and surely must understand that it will soon go down in line with the rest of his stats. there is NMIH that he is gonna continue at that level leading off when he sux so bad every other at bat . Lets revisit those numbers in two weeks.

Well, at 1B Mauer would probably post better numbers; more at bats would lead to higher HR, RBI totals, for one thing, and less distraction/responsibility would probably boost his overall hitting.

But, point taken. He wouldn’t be an elite-hitting 1B.

Two reasons given for moving Mauer to 1B…

1) He’s still too injured to be an effective catcher.
2) Morneau is still out for quite some time.

Neither of these is a problem the Braves have.

Schafer has an OBP in the 290’s. That’s what you want from the guy who will get the most plate appearances in a given span of games? No Nate isn’t leaps & bounds ahead of him, but his is around .330 if recall. That’s still HUGE difference long term.

All Schafer is going to give you over Nate is a bit more speed & flash in his few & far between extra base hits.

LAG – exactly. The Mauer move is of necessity. It’s not an example for Braves to follow. Also, McCann’s 162 game numbers compare much better than Mauer’s to 1B, still, it would be like trading the best catcher in the NL (at least) for a 5-8 1B. People here would rip Wren to shreds if he made a deal like that, rightfully so.
