Too many lefties in the lineup today. Fredi should have at least given Schafer or McLouth a day off, and put Ramirez in there. He’s rotting on the bench.
It looks like Luebke is on pace to pitch the game of his life today. He’ll probably strike out 12 and the Braves will have about 3 hits. It just looks like one of those days.
Oh, GREAT Blog, Chief!! I’m keeping this one, that’s for sure! Thanks so much. Hope all those goofy fans who want to move BMac and play Ross more read this—might actually make an impression coming straight from the horse’s mouth…
live by the SB, die by the SB. and some folks wonder why there is such a low correlation between SB and RS.
coach being one of the biggest dummies in that regard of course
You guys realize you’re taking a chance when you DH a catcher. If something happens to the catcher (say Ross gets hurt), and the other catcher has to play defense, the DH is off and the pitcher has to hit. It’s not a huge deal, but, if it happened early in an AL game, you’d be playing with 8 hitters against 9.
or not. man, this guy is going to have like a Maddux-esque complete game shutout with 80 pitches or so at this rate. Of course, it is the 2nd inning. (-;
now you dun it Jay, all the dummies will be back demanding that we carry a third catcher who caint hit just sos we can use Rossy a few more at bats a year
Good topic. I’ve been critical of McCann because I don’t think he’s a very good defensive catcher. But, I’ve never suggested moving him (either to a different position or by trade – god forbid). He calls a good game and is a fantastic hitter.
However, we just saw what Ross does so much better than McCann (and probably leads to this controversy as much as anything) – slows down the running game. Ross made a great jump close at 2nd and nailed the guy, with an even better jump, at 3rd.
I’d love to see this out of McCann but it just may not be in his skill set.
Luebke has made some kind of change from minors to majors. He still walks a lot, but his K’s have gone up significantly in the majors. Small sample size, though.
I think moving Mac was a legitimate discussion a few years back when we had Salty looking like he may be legit and nobody that good in the immediate pipeline for first but not now. The worry for me at catcher isn’t injury as much as wearing out moving parts (knees, hips & back). All the getting up and down and moving around while in the crouch puts a lot of stress on anyone but more so on a guy as heavy as Mac. At some point he’ll likely have to move but not now. Great having a quality backup though.
Good stuff from Ross, DOB. Proof that the expert wannabe managers who want to change everything on a daily basis don’t have a clue. I prefer to let the experts do what they get paid to do.
@bravesgrl4life: Yeah, the “Hollywood Marines” (Marines who go to bootcamp in San Diego) get to go to Padres games. On the other side of the country, the Marines at Parris Island, SC get to go to, well, nowhere. (I always love the opportunity to take a shot at my west coast “brothers”!)
Seems like we’re having this McCann convo because of Ross’s numbers. I think the issue here is how to get Ross more AB’s.
But, McCann’s value is significantly increased at catcher. Barring an injury that limits him at catcher, he has the most value to this team there.
I guess you could see a McLouth/Ross platoon in LF, but that’s going away when Prado returns anyway. And, Ross points out the difficulty in switching/playing 2 positions, which isn’t going to happen during the season anyway.
For sure SteveOH. Morneau’s injury was cited along with interleague play (not having DH as a place to keep him in lineup, without having to catch) But given that the organization was talking about wanting to move Mauer to first permanently–it seems to me that mangement may be being a little opportunistic with the injuries at 1B.
Continuing the McCann theme, he’s the number 2 catcher the last 2 years measured by WAR, second to Mauer. Of course, Mauer is proving injury prone, so a move is in order. However, at 1B, Mauer’s value is going to be much less.
Same would be true for McCann. Over the same period, Mac is far and away the best offensive catcher.
