Not that I want this to be one of the first few blog comments but the Phillies won 3-1.

Looks like the Pads did a real nice recognition of the Marines.

June 26th, 20114:09 pm
Long day ahead.
Well, that wasn’t a very good AB.
June 26th, 20114:10 pm
Dang it, JS and JH. Not a good start.
Chris from the Rock
Too many lefties in the lineup today. Fredi should have at least given Schafer or McLouth a day off, and put Ramirez in there. He’s rotting on the bench.
Mudderland in attendance–Big Go Bravos….but not like that/3KKKKKs.
June 26th, 20114:11 pm
It looks like Luebke is on pace to pitch the game of his life today. He’ll probably strike out 12 and the Braves will have about 3 hits. It just looks like one of those days.
We just got OWNED by this kid. Gonna be a long day.

Oh, GREAT Blog, Chief!! I’m keeping this one, that’s for sure! Thanks so much. Hope all those goofy fans who want to move BMac and play Ross more read this—might actually make an impression coming straight from the horse’s mouth…
Great stuff. I love it.

Man the Pardes have some ugly uniforms. Whats the deal with that? Makes me want 2 vomit.
My wife wants me to see if I can order her a Padres jersey like those worn today…..I told her internet commerce has ceased as of now!
June 26th, 20114:13 pm
Play of the Game so far: Schafer taking a ball.
David…great quotes from Ross. Very cool insight he gave us.
June 26th, 20114:14 pm
@DOB….Very good read, thanks for all you do to make things cool for the fans!
June 26th, 20114:15 pm
David Ross is better than 75% of everyone else’s everyday catchers. Braves are very lucky to have such a team player on their side.
Great song DOB!
And one of your best interviews ever on a subject that our bloggers need more information on.
GREAT NEW BLOG! Thanks
Ross seems to have real good sense. Thats the kinda stuff that a few of us try to explain to the blog, maybe they will accept reality from him better
June 26th, 20114:16 pm
NOW you’re out! Haha.
But seriously, Timmy…
Joe – those are their Sunday home uniforms honoring the Marines.
And why are the Padres trying to steal 3rd off Ross?
That’s right sit down!
Dummies thought heap was catching.
Don’t get him the first time, you’ll get him the next. Dufus.
June 26th, 20114:17 pm
The Braves would really benefit from having a DH. They could let McCann DH when Ross is catching and let Hinske DH when McCann is catching.
O-Dog batting 3rd for the Pads? Ouch!
June 26th, 20114:19 pm
live by the SB, die by the SB. and some folks wonder why there is such a low correlation between SB and RS.
coach being one of the biggest dummies in that regard of course
Uggs is going to hit a double right here.
June 26th, 20114:20 pm
I see Koufax is pitching for SD today.
You guys realize you’re taking a chance when you DH a catcher. If something happens to the catcher (say Ross gets hurt), and the other catcher has to play defense, the DH is off and the pitcher has to hit. It’s not a huge deal, but, if it happened early in an AL game, you’d be playing with 8 hitters against 9.
June 26th, 20114:21 pm
can he get three more Ks in a row?
June 26th, 20114:23 pm
or not. man, this guy is going to have like a Maddux-esque complete game shutout with 80 pitches or so at this rate. Of course, it is the 2nd inning. (-;
now you dun it Jay, all the dummies will be back demanding that we carry a third catcher who caint hit just sos we can use Rossy a few more at bats a year
Messed that smiley up…
Good topic. I’ve been critical of McCann because I don’t think he’s a very good defensive catcher. But, I’ve never suggested moving him (either to a different position or by trade – god forbid). He calls a good game and is a fantastic hitter.
However, we just saw what Ross does so much better than McCann (and probably leads to this controversy as much as anything) – slows down the running game. Ross made a great jump close at 2nd and nailed the guy, with an even better jump, at 3rd.
I’d love to see this out of McCann but it just may not be in his skill set.
Might want to consider swinging at those fastballs down the center of the plate. Just a thought.
T for Texas
June 26th, 20114:24 pm
As a contrast to today’s blog on Mac (Good one, David) Twins announce today that Mauer will begin working out at First Base.
Not picking up the ball well? That’s 4 Ks looking already.
Bats taking a day off after a busy day yesterday.
taking fast balls down the middle..good grief

Great blog DOB. Great stuff from Ross.
I am on vacation in Destin, yaw keep me updated, please.
Luebke has made some kind of change from minors to majors. He still walks a lot, but his K’s have gone up significantly in the majors. Small sample size, though.
I think moving Mac was a legitimate discussion a few years back when we had Salty looking like he may be legit and nobody that good in the immediate pipeline for first but not now. The worry for me at catcher isn’t injury as much as wearing out moving parts (knees, hips & back). All the getting up and down and moving around while in the crouch puts a lot of stress on anyone but more so on a guy as heavy as Mac. At some point he’ll likely have to move but not now. Great having a quality backup though.
njbraves, keep your intelligent observations coming, don’t know what we would do without your musings..
June 26th, 20114:26 pm
I’m gonna get pounded for this but I’m predicting this starter will shut us down. He looks good the the righties aren’t exactly hitting the ball
October 5, 2030 AJC Headline: Gonzalez retires after 20 seasons as Braves’ skipper; Ross named manager for 2031.
June 26th, 20114:27 pm
lets see how he does after a few times around the league
Good stuff from Ross, DOB. Proof that the expert wannabe managers who want to change everything on a daily basis don’t have a clue. I prefer to let the experts do what they get paid to do.
@bravesgrl4life: Yeah, the “Hollywood Marines” (Marines who go to bootcamp in San Diego) get to go to Padres games. On the other side of the country, the Marines at Parris Island, SC get to go to, well, nowhere. (I always love the opportunity to take a shot at my west coast “brothers”!)
Time to turn the game on…
T for Texas–that may have something to do with Morneau’s injury…Gardenhire hinted at it in his comments too.
Schafer with a lineout to 1b last night and a triple. Still squaring up some balls! a triple! THink about it.
Hudson’s command looks a little off today.
June 26th, 20114:29 pm
Bats taking a day off after a busy day yesterday.
Nope, right here, ready, willing and able to call nuts, nuts.
I try to monty but that incredibly crappy 600 OPS keeps getting in the way
Rally good blog, DOB. Nice to get Ross’ perspective.
June 26th, 20114:30 pm
Uggla hit his ball HARD..
This UMPIRE is squeezing Hudson
Catching is what Mac can do,to slow for another postion other then D.H. in A.L. Just have to put up with bad defense.
Beautiful place, just dont know if I am going to make it for a week.
June 26th, 20114:31 pm
Fixin’ to be “ballgame”….right here.
Seems like we’re having this McCann convo because of Ross’s numbers. I think the issue here is how to get Ross more AB’s.
But, McCann’s value is significantly increased at catcher. Barring an injury that limits him at catcher, he has the most value to this team there.
I guess you could see a McLouth/Ross platoon in LF, but that’s going away when Prado returns anyway. And, Ross points out the difficulty in switching/playing 2 positions, which isn’t going to happen during the season anyway.
might get ugly….

I am on vacation in Destin, yaw keep me updated, please. _ olereb
The women on the beaches will be going topless from 4 pm central time till dark tonight.
June 26th, 20114:33 pm
For sure SteveOH. Morneau’s injury was cited along with interleague play (not having DH as a place to keep him in lineup, without having to catch) But given that the organization was talking about wanting to move Mauer to first permanently–it seems to me that mangement may be being a little opportunistic with the injuries at 1B.
Settle down, Huddy. Get Maybin.
June 26th, 20114:34 pm
Now we need a HUGE DP.
Dang error, if Gonzo fields that ball cleanly, the Braves might be out of the inning. Instead we have bases loaded and one out.
Huddy not exactly looking very good so far.
There is the DP. Sweet!
June 26th, 20114:35 pm
like Ross admitted, he is hit and miss over the long run. like Hinske his bat tends to go down as the amount of playing time goes up
Nice DP by timmy.
And we got it
June 26th, 20114:36 pm
But with a fortuitous DP like that, he is still unscored upon.
out at home!!!
June 26th, 20114:37 pm
Ball to Gonzo was a tough pick. Tons of top-spin on that in-betweener. Cut him some slack.
June 26th, 2011
Fixin’ to be “ballgame”….right here.
Huddy just pulled out his lucky rabbits foot on that double play
June 26th, 20114:38 pm
fortuitous huh? Jerry goin’ all uptown on us today???
huddie All the getting up and down and moving around while in the crouch puts a lot of stress on anyone but more so on a guy as heavy as Mac.
BMac is not THAT heavy!!
Go Nate, go Nate
June 26th, 20114:39 pm
no hitter is gone. Have to work on the shutout now.
Atta boy Nate. Great to see that.
Nate!!!!!!!!!!! Looking much better @ the dish!!!
Nate haters………take your teef out and gum that.
Nate the great.
McLouth’s third double in past four official at-bats
McLouth must have lost a step. Should be at third !
June 26th, 20114:42 pm
Use Tim as a pinch hitter.
June 26th, 20114:43 pm
Luebke must’ve seen Huddy’s two-run homer last week….
Nate’s OPS is almost 100 points higher than Schafer’s now
Game’s going quick or is it just me…
June 26th, 20114:44 pm
Yeah, he didn’t want any part of Timmy!
June 26th, 20114:45 pm
Schafer has a good eye.
June 26th, 20114:46 pm
Continuing the McCann theme, he’s the number 2 catcher the last 2 years measured by WAR, second to Mauer. Of course, Mauer is proving injury prone, so a move is in order. However, at 1B, Mauer’s value is going to be much less.
Same would be true for McCann. Over the same period, Mac is far and away the best offensive catcher.
Braves fans abound in SD…got to give ‘em some runs….us too!
