Mather chooses free agency over Triple-A

SAN DIEGO — Joe Mather opted for free agency rather than be sent back to Triple-A by the Braves.

The backup corner outfielder/infielder was designated for assignment Sunday by the Braves. He chose free agency on Thursday after going through waivers without being claimed by another team.

Mather, 28, had the  right to choose free agency as a player who’d already been outrighted to the minor leagues once this season.

The Braves claimed him off waivers from St. Louis in November and hoped to use him as a backup first baseman and outfielder. But the out-of-options player was outrighted to the minors after having a poor spring training and going unclaimed on waivers.

(He had to clear waivers because he was out of minor-league options, which had been exhausted during his years with the Cardinals.)

Added to the Braves’ major league roster early in the season, Mather hit .213 with one homer, nine RBI and 23 strikeouts in 75 at-bats for Atlanta..

After going 7-for-12 with a homer and five RBIs in three games May 20-22 against the Angels at Anaheim, he was 3-for-42 with two RBIs in his last 21 games for the Braves.

When outfielder Nate McLouth came off the disabled list Sunday, the Braves opted to keep rookie Wilkin Ramirez as a backup and dropped Mather. They had 10 days to trade, release or put him on waivers.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez told Mather the Braves would like to retain him if he cleared waivers and was willing to return to Triple-A Gwinnett rather than become a free agent.

WAY off the subject. Does anyone else miss the “original” tomahawk chop music that they played in the early 90’s at the stadium? The recording WITHOUT the whistle. I was watching a playoff game that was recorded in ‘92 and heard the “chop music” in the backround and realized how much I miss it. BRING IT BACK!

I went free agent so I can sell my significant talents to the highest bidder. If Fredi thinks I’ll play AAA—he can stick it in his ear. I talked to FW and he insulted me by saying he thinks I’m a lifetime 215 hitter. I had trouble hitting cause I had to sit there day after day and watch Uggla bat. I found that very disorienting as he swings like a deranged animal. I’ll show them– I plan on getting up with Boras and then signing a big money contract with the Red Sox, Yankees or the Phillies.
I’m too good for Gwinnett.

@ Joe: same rationale as Schafer… need lots of at bats after hand surgery recovery time to get it going again. Mather was good before the hand injury.

WE NEED MICHAEL BOURN!!!
Everyone seems to be in love with Schafer for some reason while failing to look at his numbers. The problem is we’ve been watching guys like McLouth patrolling CF for so long, we see someone come in playing good D and stealing a few bases and think he’s the future. Career numbers don’t lie, and it you take a look at Schafer’s, they’re not all impressive. Actually very unimpressive.
At each position (assuming Uggla picks it up and Chipper decides to focus on at-bats even when there are no RISP), with the exception of Gonzo, were stacked. The only real hole right now is CF. Bourn is reaching his prime and would be a huge force for us on the basepaths.

Honestly though, I would love to see what Jose Constanza could do if given the opportunity. He’s got such a fluid swing and makes great contact.

Anyone who doesn’t know who he is, look him up. We might have our own version of Jose Reyes or Michael Bourn right under our noses.

Chipper no longer belongs in the 3 hole. He’s a very good hitter, but he’s not the guy to hit 3rd anymore. Problem is our manager has no balls to do what he wants to do and move him. I assume thats the case, but you never know with Fredi. He doesn’t know how to put together a lineup anyway.

Chipper really isn’t killing any rallies, but putting him in that spot really disrupts the flow of this offense which has potential to be great.

Hunter Pence has 9 HRS, 51 RBIS & is hitting .321

He would not make a good fit with this Braves team; he doesn’t strike out enough.

He’d also command a hefty salary. We’ve got premier, well-paid athletes like McLouth , Kawakami, Lowe, Chipper & Uggly who are all having banner years.

Ronald Millsaps

We don’t need a trade. We might need a new hitting coach. We definitely need said hitting coach and our manager to step it up.

Fredi has done an admirable job, given his circumstances. Stepping in to replace a legend isn’t really easy, and Atlanta does have a strong record. He also has a bit of culture shock, I suppose, in going to a team with less power and speed, but he could’ve made more adjustments to this point.

Bobby was a better general manager than a manager. I didn’t care for his in-game strategies as much as his architecture in building a team. He has John Portman beaten in that category.

Give the “Skip Caray” stuff a rest.

I said before the year that the Braves should sign Lance Berkman. A former professor I talked baseball with–who thought he knew everything about the sport–thought I was off my rocker. Berkman’s the frontrunner for MVP now, and he’s good enough to lead the charge with Pujols out of the lineup. In fact, the Cardinals are better off with Pujols out than Berkman out as of right now.

This return to prominence is one of the greatest stories in baseball history, actually, and Atlanta could’ve signed him for what? One-tenth of Derek Lowe’s salary? Said return is another indictment against the Yankees’ claim to being the best franchise ever. If they’re so great, why did they do nothing at all, apparently, to help Berkman return to form? The area is to blame also. Up there, locals call for the guillotine if you don’t produce within 48 hours. Leaving New York for St. Louis, a real baseball city, is definitely a return to civilization, and being in the National League, which is the only league that promotes real baseball, is another factor.

Said professor, by the way, thinks Dale Murphy’s being two homers shy of 400 is a legitimate case against his Cooperstown bid. I don’t believe it. Worse, he thinks Andres Galarraga’s career home-run total is not necessarily high enough to get him in. I mentioned that he missed the 1999 season due to cancer and that if he hadn’t had that scenario, you probably could add 40 homers to his re’sume’, to which he replied, “If you didn’t do it, you didn’t do it.” (He got mad because I told him his argument was void of credibility and that one should focus more on a player’s average production than his cumulative production.)

Void of credibility, indeed.

Honestly, Atlanta can win it all as it is. I would be awfully reluctant to make a major trade right now. I’d pursue Jose Reyes in the offseason.

Hard to believe Atlanta ran Matt Diaz out of town and that the Phillies didn’t pursue him more diligently. They ran Jayson Werth out (there’s another guy who, like Uggla, is having a down season… Look around baseball, folks. Averages are not good, and I partially, again, blame the downtrodden commissioner) and really could use a right-handed bat. Atlanta opted for Mather over Diaz, or rather they decided they would rather have Mather. Now we have neither. Canning Diaz wasn’t smart.

Atlanta has a good record and is improving. Schafer, Uggla, and Heyward should be huge factors in the second half.

If Constanza is better than what the Braves now have playing but not on the 40 man roster, then the Braves have to move someone off to make room for him. The problem is the Braves could loose this player if he doesn’t make it through waivers. The upside is Constanza is the answer to CF on the opposite side is that he is another weak hitting outfielder when exposed to major league pitching.

When Prado comes back who is it that goes back down, Lugo or Ramirez? Braves need right handed power bat. Ramirez has not shown power at major league level yet, but has potential.
Lugo’s value is to rest Gonzalez at ss..
If Mather was on 40 man roster and now is no longer on the teams roster, doesn’t that open up a slot for Constaza on 4o man roster?

So, a guy that clears waivers(meaning nobody wants him) declines AAA to become a free agent. Seems this idiot is as dumb as he is a bad hitter.

Rowsdower: Probably just means he knows there is another team ready to sign him, St. Louis perhaps, that will offer him better chance of getting back to and sticking in the major leagues than he thinks he has with the Braves. He has a history with the Cardinals, whereas he had none with the Braves.

My arms are huge, but my penis is small. I like to shake my bat, and stand real tall. I can’t hit sh!t, but that don’t matter. Keep on hatin’ while my pockets get fatter. Chipper is my boy, we are besties. Steroids made me big, but shrunk my testies. When I come to the plate all the girls scream and cheer, I suck at baseball and I’m a millionaire. eat it!

Jose Constanza is a career minor leager. Had a good year with Indians’ AAA last year. They didn’t promote him, they got rid of him. He’s pushing 28. I don’t think he’s the answer.

McLouth is so bad, he makes Schafer look good.

Should have kept Matt Diaz. Affordable corner OF with freak injury last year. Hit LHP very well.

That rap was mean, but I don’t care. Dan likes to sneak in my bedroom, and smell my underwear. He puts them on his head and wears them like a hat. If he ever stops working out, boy he’s gonna be fat. I wish he could hit or even make a play. I’m waiting for him to come out already, and admit he’s gay. 62 million d@mn that’s a lot, good thing I’m his siter cause I really like to shop. Ohh sorry guys I know I’m being a butt, maybe Dan will do better without that ugly ole’ haircut.

C-ya Joey, been nice knowin ya! Thank goodness they sent him packing, he was’t a long term answer to anything. His career is marked by spotty numbers and injury, when they first announced they claimed him off waivers I couldn’t believe they took the time to stoop that low. He’s not a big league calibur type of player at all, having very limited success the past couple years and all. Good news though, atleast they won’t call him up at any point and send down someone we can really use everyday like Schafer. Schafer brings so much to the team now, we’re really lucky he healed up and was able to make so much progress this season. Keep Schafer up here for good, and stop dumpster diving to find marginal players who don’t make an impact because we’re better than that! If we have to add a bat for the end of the season playoff push, make it a good one!

Unfortunately as part of the Pence/Bourne trade for McLouth, Kawakami, Lowe and Uggla the Braves also have to feed Carlos Lee until his contract expires in 2013. That could put us upside down.

First- Ronald Milsaps….Berkman isnt making “one tenth of Lowe’s salary” as you state, he is making 8 million this year (still a bargain), but it is about 55 percent of Lowe’s salary not one-tenth….Although Lowe is overpaid by about 6 or 7 million dollars….

Secondly- to whoever answered the question about who goes down Lugo or Ramirez when Prado goes back, the answer will probably be Ramirez, simply because we will already have our 2 back-up outfielders in McLouth and Hinske. I think the bench will be McLouth, Hinske, Conrad, Ross, and Lugo, because we will always need a backup to fill in for Gonzo at SS. And just think once Moylan and Medlen come back in Aug, this is my projected roster from Aug, until the World Series (very likely, as a student of the game-the Braves our World Series caliber)….

Starters
1. Schaefer -CF
2. Heyward -RF
3. Jones -3B
4. McCann-C
5. Prado-LF
6. Freeman-1B
7. Uggla -2B
8. Gonzo-SS

Bench
9. McLouth-CF/LF
10. Hinske-LF,RF, 1B
11. Ross-C
12. Conrad- 3B, 2B
13. Lugo-SS, 2B, 3B

Rotation:
1. Jurrjens
2. Hanson
3. Hudson
4. Lowe
5. Beachy

Bullpen-
6. Venters
7. O’Flaherty
8. Moylan
9. Medlen
10. Linebrink
11. Sherill
12. Kimbrel-CL

well i guess i made another mistake with mather– was hoping we could send him back to richmond he hit about 250 again and i could justify bringing him back up since 250 is better than mclouth or heyward– but never fear im looking into some more garbage heap players– jermaine dye and dontrelle willis- but the upside on willis even if he cant pitch naymore he can hit better than outr current outfielders without prado and second baseman

We don’t need Bourn or Pence. Pence is a slightly faster version of Jeff Francouer. Do not be fooled by his average right now, as he always runs hot and cold. If you think Uggla looks bad right now wait until yousee Pence in one of his cold spells.

Bourn is very good offensively, but he can’t touch Schafer defensively. He makes routine plays look hard because his instincts are very poor and he gets bad jumps. He also has an arm that make Ron Gant look like Dwight Evans. Four hoppers to second base from the warning track are NOT impressive.

In reality, the Braves OF is not doing badly at all. Heyward getting hurt did not help. Schafer is doing EXACTLY what the Braves want and need. Solid defense with an arm that otehr teams respect. He gets on base at a .300 clip, which is not great, but let me remind you that in Bourn’s first full year in the majors his OBP was .288. In other words, at this point in his career Schafer could be considered to be ahead of Bourn. Bourn will be arb eligible in 2012 and is already making $4.4 millions, so expect 6+. He is a free agent in 2013. In other words, we can’t really afford him and sign all of our young pitchers. For my money Schafer is a better option. Let’s give him AB’s and see what happens. He does need to work more on bunting though.

The one player I would love to see us investigate is Jose Reyes. Unfortunately, we probably can sign him after this season and I don’t want a rental. But we might be able to convince him to come here. My guess is the Yankees will gobble him up in free agency though .. even with Jeter being overpaid.

It’s easy for those of you to knock Joe when he’s hurt (hand), but where is your opinions on McLouth? He always has an excuse!!!!!!!!!!! Where is the player that once got on the field for Pittsburgh? GOOD LUCK JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can’t blame Mather at all – I would want to get away from this LOSER of an offensive team as fast as I could. LIttle league hitters could out hit this sorry team! And Uggla is the worst!
