The Braves claimed left-handed reliever Dustin Richardson off waivers from the Florida Marlins and have assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The Braves wanted some left-handed depth for their bullpen. Left-hander Eric O’Flaherty has struggled some with periodic back pain.
Richardson is a former fifth round draft choice of the Red Sox in 2006 and was traded to Florida this past offseason for left-hander Andrew Miller. The Marlins designated him for assignment last week to open a spot on their 40-man roster for Dewayne Wise.
Richardson went 3-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 23 relief appearances for the Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate New Orleans. Lefties were hitting .341 off him, with 15 hits in 10 2/3 innings, while he limited right-handers to a .208 average, with 16 hits in 21 1/3 innings.
Richardson was assigned to the Braves’ 40-man roster, which had an open spot.

The Ted has the largest TV screen in MLB and never shows replays? No replay yesterday of the Conrad HR, close plays at 1B, Bautista catch, etc. WHY?

Richardson’s best pitch must be a screwball, and the left-handed hitters eat it up.

rr – A long time ago (late seventies/early eighties) in a galaxy far, far away (actually across the street at the old Fulton County Stadium) Ted and the boys were very proud of the Jumbtron they had installed. Well one day the Jumbotron operators decided to do just as you suggest – show a very close play that the umpires got WRONG. Well, a great hue and cry went up from the fans as they booed the umps for the botched call. In response, the umpires walked off the field and told the Braves that if any more close plays were shown on the Jumbotron they would force the Braves to forfeit the game. Thus ever since, no close plays have ever been shown on the big screen at Fulton County or Turner Field. And since Conrad’s homer required official review, no replay.

It’s not just Atlanta…MLB, in an agreement with the umpire assn., bans replays of what could be considered ‘questionable calls’ from all their venues…at least they used to.

Great, a lefty that can’t get lefties out – just what we need especially against the Phillies. Thanks Frank!

I see we keep adding minor league players, and that there was an open spot for this guy. I have not heard about many that we have released. Have we released any minor league players recently to correspond with any of the recent signings?

This umpiring union is a pretty sweet thing. You get a nice salary and pension, you get vacations–in season—plus get the winter off, and you not only never get any of your questionable calls televised, you also get to pick fights and eject anyone who talks back. Then THEY get punished. Not a bad gig at all.

I would much rather used that open spot on the 40 man roster for Gartrell who is batting 280 and just hit his 16th HR yesterday, or Constanza who is batting 345 and has lightning speed, we don’t need another pitcher.

I wish mr. Wren would get his mind off of signing more pitchers and get us some good batters. Pitching ain’t what is killing us, lack of hitting is.

rr, it’s not just the controversial plays that aren’t replayed. We get PLENTY of kiss cams, baseballs hidden under caps, and assorted non-baseball crapola. Very little baseball-related stuff gets shown at the stadium, EVER! The last time I attended a game, there might have been 2 replays of any kind of play for the entire evening! It’s no wonder that the Braves fan base seems to be less knowledgeable of baseball than in the past. The “fan experience” is focused on everything but the game itself. But, everybody knows to look for the ball under the cap and to do the antiquated, ridiculous wave at some point during the game!!
It is odd that the Braves would sign another reclamation pitcher (several have been signed in the past 1-3 weeks) while ignoring Constanza’s superior batting average and Gartrell’s power………

Questionable calls are broadcasted over air all the time. It’s within the venue that they are not allowed…and that goes for every sport.
Also, being a production person myself, the crew that runs the jumbotron, and the crew that runs the TV broadcast are two completely different crews with VASTLY different skill sets. Usually in my experience, jumbotron workers are typically interns or college grads who aren’t near ready for “the show”, and get their broadcast experience in venues running jumbotron. Sometimes it’s being hand-cuffed to what you can show, sometimes it’s inexperience on knowing how to do a replay.

Bats? They’ve got Uggla, Schafer and Heyward. If those three were hitting like they’re supposed to, the Braves would be in way better shape. Perhaps San Diego will be the turning point…?…

Please, especially those of you who have lived here all your lives, there has NEVER been a Fulton County Stadium.
Tim McCarver somehow made the name popular.
It started as ATLANTA STADIUM, then renamed Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.
Why can’t we call it what it has been historically called…ATLANTA STADIUM?

Like Bob said “get us some hitters” either that or go find a clone of Maury Wills (ex Dodger ss, base stealer supreme)and try to win “EVERY” game 1-0 or 2-1. Winning is the name of the game period but if our staff had some consistant run support I believe we could over take the Phillys. If not we certainly could at worst runaway with the Wildcard.

the biggest reason not to show replays is those fat overpaid f***s will make you pay on a lot of purposefully blown close calls later on. My biggest fear when Bream slid was would Terry Tata make us pay for all the a** chewings he got from Bobby. Tata was not a Braves favorite as Skip pointed out during the game. God bless him he put all that aside and called him safe.
