Braves quotes after marathon loss to Rangers

***FREDI GONZALEZ

On the first-inning errors

“That kind of put us behind the eight-ball. But to tell you the truth, I thought it was one of Derek’s better outings, the way he was aggressive and went after hitters. Got some groundballs and double plays. It’s just too bad that we didn’t play particularly well behind him. But here it is, almost six hours after the game started and we’re in extra innings. We came back and tied it. They got the leadoff double by Kinsler and we had to put Hamilton on to face Beltre. That’s tough poison right there.”

On Uggla

“All day today, he hit the ball hard. He hit the ball really, really hard, and came within three or four inches from hitting it out in straightaway center. That’s a good sign.”

On Harrison coming back after long rain delay

“Let’s not talk about that. I have enough trouble talking about my team. I don’t want to talk about someone else’s.”

On playing through all the injuries

“We just have to keep our nose the grindstone and keep going, keep battling. We have all those injuries you’re talking about, but we’re in ballgames, and we’re still playing and pitching good. Guuys busting their butts, and we’re in every ballgame.”

On O’Flaherty (sore back)

“Hopefully, he played catcher today and he’ll throw a little bullpen session tomorrow and see how he feels.”

On losing in extra innings, after long delay, etc

“Anytime you lose an extra-innings game it’s a tough loss, especially after you battle back against a pretty good opponent. Real good opponent. Maybe the best opponent we’ve seen so far, as far as 25-man roster – pitchers, position players, bench. You battle back and battle back, have a chance a couple of times there in the eighth and ninth innings and don’t get that single that we need.”

On Chipper (strained adductor)

“Now we’re shooting for maybe pinch-hitting tomorrow, maybe even Monday or Tuesday.”

On Freddie Freeman’s recent strikeout binge, including four today

“One of those freshman ruts that everybody goes through. Even 10-year vets go through that.”

***DEREK LOWE

Fredi said one of your best outings, said they didn’t play well behind you

“That had nothing to do with it. I mean, they scored four runs, that’s the bottom line. There’s definitely times where you could have got out of jams and it just didn’t happen, so…. And then the delay. I wish I was 25 like he [Harrison] was and be able to come back out. But I wasn’t able to.

“We fought back and just came up a little short.”

On team struggling with so many injuries

“This time of year it’s always tough. I think at the beginning of the year, everyone’s excited to get off to whatever start they get off to, and the last six, seven weeks you’re in a pennant race. It’s the middle of the year that is always tough, and it’s made it a little more strenuous with the injuries. It seems like this locker room is just rotating, like every couple of days you’re getting a new pitcher, a new position player. That tests you. Because you want to stay in it, because Philly, with their pitching staff, they’re not going to go on too big a slide. You just try to stay within distance. I think that’s our goal.

“When you play 162 games, I mean, injuries – that’s why in spring training, every year the manager and general manager will look at every kid in spring training and say, ‘Hey, look, we’re going to probably need the majority of you guys.’ That’s no lie.

“We’re just going through a little injury bug, and we’ll be fine when it all settles down. You want to be there the last two months. That’s our goal. And we’ll just go out tomorrow with J.J., as good as he’s been pitching, and try to salvage the series.”

***DAN UGGLA

On Harrison coming back after long rain delay

“I’ve never really seen somebody come back after that long of a rain delay. And I thought he was going to just get one out, but he ended up going two more innings. He showed a lot of what he’s made of tonight, and pitched a great game.”

On facing an uphill battle whole game today after the early mistakes, falling behind

“That’s baseball. That shows a lot of our team’s character, when you fight back after getting down 4-nothing. We just came up a little short – I mean, inches.”

Did you think that ball was gone, your double off the fence?

“I did. But that’s the way it went tonight.”

”They showed it up on the scoreboard, and it was clear as day, it hit that yellow line [and not a homer].”

You hit a lot of balls hard tonight

“I did. Of course, one of them’s got to be at somebody. But I felt good. Try and build off tonight.”

***CHIPPER JONES

On his adductor right muscle strain

“If there were any way that I felt like I could play through it and still help it get better, I would. I can’t.”

Warmed up from left side of plate a couple of times in game in case needed as left-handed pinch hitter

“I’d be tempting fate if I did it right-handed. I mean, I could go swing 50-percent, 60-percent, just all upper body and not put anything into it. But I go out there and try to turn around 95 mph, you need your legs, you need your hips. It’s just impossible right now.”

***BRIAN McCANN

On Derek Lowe

“He pitched well. We played not good behind him. He’s just running into some bad luck. It seems like every time he takes the hill, something’s going on behind him. We’ve just got to keep playing hard and show up tomorrow.”

On Uggla

“He’s squaring some balls up this last two or three weeks and had not much to show for it. He was an inch away from winning us the ballgame tonight.”

On six errors in two nights

“It’s too many. It’s too many. We’ve got to shore up our D, for sure.”

We really need our regulars healthy and back in the lineup. Having our bench and triple-A guys start is killing us. These past two games have been ugly to watch, especially that defense.

After a while of reading the comments on these blogs, you see how many people claim to be Braves fans, but all they do is bash the team. There comes a time when you so called “fans” must realize what this team is going through.

Every other day one or two new guys walks in the door. I’m sure that’s tough on chemistry, but the injuries can just knock the wind out of you. This team has the injury bug and it’s not fair, but life’s not fair. It happens to multiple teams in every major sport every year. Last year the Philles at one point didn’t have Utley, Polanco, Lidge, Rollins, AND Carlos Ruiz….but they still won 97 games.

The Braves have the 4th most wins in the majors and are tied for the Wild Card with Arizona and St. Louis.

Stay with is Braves fans. Its June 18th….check back in a month and then will know the real story about this team.

i tell ya. i feel really kinda bad for uggla. he has hit so many balls that are rocketed. he has the worst luck of anybody i’ve ever seen. he actually hits the ball harder than anyone. two inches from a win tonight. it’s getting so painful to watch these games.

It’s far more than just injuries. The team is swinging for the fences all the time while refusing to make pitchers work for outs. We let other teams starter go 6-7 innings or more every game. Their whole approach to proper offensive baseball is completely off (don’t make outs, get on base). I wish they were getting asked about the real elephant in the room threatening to drag the entire season down.

Jason Heyward will never ever be a star in this league. If you can’t play a full season at 20 or 21 what makes you think he can any other time. They found no damage or issues with his shoulder yet he missed a month. Since 2nd month of last season he is hitting a cool .220.

Blast, I say fire both, but it’s unlikely a team with a winning record will be willing to fire their manager… despite the fact he’s doing his best to drive the Braves into the ground. Almost every hitter is vastly under-performing, and the Braves haven’t had this low of an OBP in more than a decade. Fire Larry Parrish

blast, you are an idiot….plain and simple, that was a double for uggla, and a rather gift run by the rangers defense (the 3rd of the night), after shaefers two base error led to that run. Look, I am just as frustrated as you-but aim the anger in the right direction—the braves horridly pathetic offense and Larry Parrish in particular for allowing such a bad offense to begin with. I predicted a sweep, because we just cant stay with the Rangers offense as sad as it is, luckily the series ends tomorrow and we dont have to see them again this year. Blast….why are you saying that was a homer….and protesting…it has to go over the yellow line, the line itself is just part of the wall… That line is there in case a ball goes over the fence after hitting it, it is a homer, however that ball was a foot short of going out, and honestly we were very lucky (as we usually are) to even be in this ball game considering the Rangers outhit, outpitched, out hustled us on the base paths and should have won, although admittedly if Uggla pulls that 10 feet to the left ,we would have won…but to protest over a correct call is being an idiot…plain and simple

With overpaid crackers like Chipper, Uggly, McLouth, Lowe and Hudson, the Braves could use some players of color on the roster.

A chocolate city like Atlanta should have a professional baseball team with more than just one African-American on the roster. Having Civil Rights Weekend and giving away hats of the Atlanta Black Crackers is just giving lip service to what is a very real problem.

Not one African-American was interviewed for Bobby Cox’s job but it was somehow predetermined to give a proven loser like Fredi Gonzalez the Braves job.

Perhaps a protest outside Turner Field with Carlos Santana is in my near future.

Elvis Andrus has 20 stolen bases this season.

The Braves entire team has how many?

Lou Brock, Ricky Henderson and Tim Raines would probably ride the pine if they were on this current Braves’ team the most whitebread team outside the National Hockey League.

its not about race you idiots.
its about THE race. WINNING games. Not half-hearted efforts at defense, and not pitiful execution at the plate. LP is lost. This team is getting NO hitting instruction, that much is clear. Someone, and I don’t care who, but someone has to step up and make some hard decisions. Soon.

I havent read all the comments here but I did read the quotes so I am not sure if anyone else has pointed out Fredi not wanting to comment about the opposing pitcher. It seemed strange and out of the ordinary. Im use to him saying the opposing pitcher pitched real well and gotta tip his cap. But when I read what he said I sensed some frustration and a little fire. Actually made me feel a little happy in a way to hear him say that.

If young Heyward had another African American on the team perhaps he wouldn’t feel so isolated, so alone. He feels like he’s been made a scapegoat for the team’s impotency with the bat, while chumps like Chipper, Uggly and Mclouth escape criticism.

Cynthia Tucker of the AJC.com won’t address the race issue of the Braves because she knows the Braves would pull all advertising from the newspaper, which few people read or purchase anyway.

Hey Pete,
Edgar is an American, South American that is. From Colombia, LOL. Isn’t all this “not enough blacks in baseball” nonsense? Why should anybody care. If a guy can help win games in this day and age he could be green.
BTW, I’ve been watching this team for 42 years and NEVER seen the impatience these hitters have at the plate. Healthy or not, I think Heyward and a few other highly touted youngsters coming out of Gwinnett and Miss. just may be overrated. Time will tell, but the eyes don’t lie
