I just went through the comments and I have one important question: “Why are they still having the World Baseball Classic?”

TennesseePaul

June 1st, 2011
12:52 pm

that’s certainly a good reason not to play a leadoff hitter every day. Nevermind his .400 OBP through his first seven games.

Later on there was more clarification on this… as this comment was about playing him everyday after McLouth gets back. And to reiterate what many have implied, it is unlikely his OBP will stay that high if he is unable to hit more than singles at a .250 clip. And it’s seven games. It’s unlikely his OBP will stay that high regardless. This really hasn’t been his “skill” in the minors. It would be truly amazing to see the kid spend his career in the minors with a .325 OBP and suddenly be a .400 OBP guy in the majors.

If the Marlins had Mike Minor they would win the NL East. That is how well they have played taking into account they have only had 3 successful starters all year and the best of the 3 is on the DL with no timetable for return. That is why the Braves will win the NL East they have 7!!!!!!!!! starters they can run out there.I’m including Teheran.just remarkable depth and IF Loco Fredo does not screw up Venters they will be unbeatable when the games start to pile up.

The Braves are FINE!!!! Way beyond FINE!!!

As a Marlins follower–NEVER use of the word FANatic—I would rather face anyone in baseball than Brian McCann in a late game clutch situation. i would walk McCann to get to ANYBODY. Two outs in the 9th inning with a 1 run lead, the Braves may as well get the pinch runner up stretching because Brian will be on 1B in about 40 seconds.

Mike Minor is, at best, a 5th starter. He has no business being in the rotation of a good team that has World Series aspirations.

Well, on this club Minor is a 6th or 7th starter, depending on which one Teheran is. That being said, he’s EXACTLY the type of pitcher that belongs in the rotation of a team with World Series aspirations, as a spot-starter/injury fill-in. Can you name me a team that has a BETTER 6th starter than Minor? Philly certainly has WS hopes, and they have run out Kyle Kendrick and Vance Worley this year. The Yankees would like to be in the World Series, yet Minor is probably a #4 starter for that team. Fact is that while Minor isn’t an ace by any measure, he is a very, very good version of what the Braves are using him as: injury replacement #5 starter.

Well, that’s certainly a good reason not to play a leadoff hitter every day. Nevermind his .400 OBP through his first seven games. Let’s focus on slugging, since every person who’s advised him has made it clear that trying to hit homers, like he once did, is exactly what the Braves do NOT need him to do.

Jordan Schafer’s OBP’s in the minors:

2009: .263 in 38 PA’s
2010: .268 in 307 PA’s
2011: .309 in 186 PA’s

Perhaps he’s suddenly close to a .400 OBP player. Perhaps he’s not quite as bad as his minor league numbers indicate because of his injury issues, etc.

But I have a hard time believing a guy who has had trouble keeping his OBP much above .300 the last few seasons is relatively close to the type of hitter who can keep his OBP anywhere near .400 for a few weeks worth of games in the majors.

I do, by the way, think there is some legitimacy to the idea that he may not be as bad as his numbers indicate. But even if he is better than his minor league numbers indicate, how much better? His minor league numbers have been pretty bad so even if his true talent level is better, it’s unlikely the difference between his talent and his statistics is drastic enough to make him much more than a fringe-type player.

Schafer is only 24 so it’s way too early to give up on him. I think he could make big strides playing everyday this season. And I certainly think it’s fine that he’s playing everyday in McLouth’s absence.

Regarding my last post, I forgot to make it clear that those OBP’s for Schafer are obviously only the last three seasons. He’s played more minor league seasons and his OBP’s were better in those seasons, a reason I think he’s better than his numbers the last couple of years indicate, to some degree.

But, again, I think he needs to play everyday somewhere and make significant strides in his offensive game this season; and I think there is a decent chance he will.

Mike Minor, “he’s a 3rd starter” no higher”, no wait, “he’ll never be more than a 5th starter,” Can we even let the kid have a year or two before we relegate him. All this talk about ceilings and such, really? Bunch of pseudo-scouts and experts. No one on this blog could have predicted the careers of any of these guys based on their 1st- 12-30 starts in the big leagues, you simply cannot do it. May be fun to act like you have a clue, but one person’s guess is as good as anothers.

Mike Minor- 11 GS, 1.676 WHIP-5.72 ERA
Tom Glavine- 9 GS, 1.748 WHIP-5.54 ERA
Greg Maddux-32 GS, 1.650 WHIP-5.50 ERA
John Smotz- 12 GS 1.672 WHIP-5.48 ERA

Yeah, using those stats as a barometer probably isn’t too smart. Especially if you use them to the exclusion of the 1000+ ABs with a high OBP in the two years before he won a ML job.

I’m not sure that any of Schafer’s minor league numbers are wholly relevant, anymore. He’s certainly a different player than he was in ST of 2009, beyond the wrist problem and recovery. He’s changing how he plays the game offensively, he’s missed two years of development time, and like that. I think you can only evaluate him going forward, for the most part.

TennesseePaul, the point is, even if they were injury-riddled seasons, that’s still a huge leap to close to a .400 OBP guy in the majors.

Let’s assume the wrist injury did cause his performance to suffer (which is very reasonable to assume). Accounting for that, does that make it likely that he can be something reasonably close to a very good OBP guy in the majors over the long haul? I don’t think so. If you read my whole post, the point is pretty clear, instead of narrowing your focus to one part of the post. I understand that’s a favorite tactic here. Focus narrowly and literally on one aspect of a post and refuse to understand the broader point and the real-world application and meaning.

MikeInFl

Well, the reality is that, whether due to injuries or ability, Schafer has never had any consistent success against anything above AA pitching. I’m certainly not saying he can’t do it, and I hope he will, but I think it’s a stretch to assume that he can.

No problem playing him while Nate’s out, and longer if he does well. But I’m not counting on it, and I think the best thing for him would be to go back down to AAA. He needs, somewhere, to play every day for three months and post good numbers.
