I’m skeptical of Schafer because he wasn’t hitting too great in the minors. He hasn’t hit very well at any level since that opening series 2 years ago.
He’s only 24. The hot dog Schafer was 22. He got a taste at least before, so, some of the shock and awe has worn off this time around. I think this is a more mature and humble Schafer and it shows. He also knows that this is a real opportunity and they way he’s playing, Nate has to go to the bench. Nate is a career .251 hitter.
I’m sure DS1 is preparing a defense for why Gonzalez getting picked off of 2nd was not his fault and how it didn’t hurt the Braves chances of scoring right there.
I Chip Caray 100 times more after following on twitter. He’s funny, self-depreciating, and interacts with fans a lot. I’m not even gonna talk about his cornball comments and annoying calls anymore. Much.
The only reason that the occasional blunder looks so bad is because Braves have had so few opportunities. Gonzo was breaking in anticipation of the bunt. If the bunt gets down, he’s standing on third easily. Bad pitch, no bunt, good throw back, umpire misses the call, and Gonzo is out.
Still don’t get why Chipper wasn’t DLed two weeks ago. He’d be coming back around the time Heyward and McLouth are. I said he should have been DLed then, and since his knee soreness he has been terrible at the plate.
Last 28 days .213.323 /.338. Even worse the last 7 days and 14 days.
Speaking of Alex being safe, I heard someone recently (I think it was the Nats color guy, but not sure), talking about the way umpires will often give the defense the benefit of the doubt if everything is in order (good throw, get the tag down, etc.) even if the runner eeks in safe.
He took this point to the extreme, ultimately indicating that he felt the umpire should give this call to the defense in these situations, specifically the play that had just taken place, where the team he was commentating for had made a good defensive play, but the player was correctly called safe.
DOB I’ll give you $1000 to hide all of Uggla’s size 5T jerseys and replace them with ones that fit. His best game this yr was in the loose fitting throwback jersey. Not a coincidence.
Both teams with single, stolen base, pick-off attempt at second. Braves throw theirs into CF, costing a run; Padres nail AGon, costing a RISP. Braves giving away runs and giving away chances. Good way to lose to a lousy team.
I can and will make the argument that Hudson should have escaped that inning by retiring Johnson, Harang, and Patterson consecutively. Gonzo looked to exhibit poor effort on groundballs up the middle on both Harang and Patterson which ordinarily he fields with ease. Hudson has done his job well today, but the defense fails to comply.
Now, Gamecast says the 1st pitch to Logan was way inside. Is Gamecast accurate for those who can watch the game? I may have to break down and get the baseball package.
The joy on Prado’s face as he came off the field was matched by the expressions of his teammates – they freakin’ love this guy – and the smiles on thousands of fans who gave him a standing O as he came off the field to a welcome committee on the top step of the dugout.
I saw that smile on his face yesterday. Priceless.
Was that Nate McLouth playing RF for the Padres? With as many times as Patterson crow-hopped and refrained from throwing I thought I was watching Nate.
DOB, best article i’ve ever read on martin prado, and an excellent attempt to redefine what “value” means, both in terms of and in spite of simple stats, to say nothing of advanced metrics. overall, this may be one of your best pieces of writing all year. congrats and thanks.
