DOWN ON THE FARM
ROME
21 year’s old Saturday, AARON NORTHCRAFT [2-0 1.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP] is kickin’ it so far this season in ROME. Yesterday, 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 SO. 2009’s 10th rounder struggled a bit on his promo to ROME last season. He appears quite comfortable now however. Four long-relief stints and a cumulative 1.38 ERA in 13 IP as a reliefer, has lead to his first start and a 1.80 ERA so far. Keep your eye on this kid. He may just have something going.
22 year-old soph [7th round] MATT SUSCHAK [H 1, 7.07 ERA, 2.00 WHIP] takes over NORTHCRAFT’s role with a shut-out inning of work and a base-on-balls.
Followed by 2009’s fifth rounder, reliefer TOM BERRYHILL [H 1, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP] who puts in his first two innings of work in ROME this season. Promo’d to MYRTLE last year, he struggled and is back in A-ball to find his bearings.
2010’s 28th round pick, KYLE MERTINS [SV 4, 2.40 ERA, 1.33 WHIP] closes out a spotless ninth with a SO. The 13th appearance for the soph BRAVE this season.

Braves must be feeling enormously generous after last night’s win. Here you go Padres, it’s a nice, gift-wrapped run.
Single through Uggla, stolen base where the pitcher never looked over, error to third, and run comes home on a ground out when Conrad and Freeman take their time getting the ball around the in-field.

They didn’t exactly “take their time” – The runner went as soon as the throw went to 1st base. He was already several steps down the line to begin with. Not sure what else they could have done to get the runner…

Dan Ugly Should have made the play on the leadoff hitter. If Prado were at 2nd he would have made that play and thus would have saved us an early 1-0 defecit.

cabravesfan … I think Conrad bobbled the transfer and was focused on getting the runner at first. Freeman seem to be very slow to the plate after catching the ball. It didn’t look like he was prepared to throw home.
Anyway, Hudson’s throwing error was the culprit in that run.

One of the few things the Padres do well is steal bases. They have no power and aren’t great at hitting, but when they get on, they can run. They certainly didn’t need any extra help from Huddy. But it is a moot point now

I wish I could remember the entire quote, but after the game last night when they were interviewing Marteen, they asked him why he didn’t complain (seriously) when he was moved to left field. His response?
“I love this game and I love this team…” There was a lot more, but that was the first thing he said. Pretty much sums him up. How can you not love this guy?

It’s early, but I’m starting to warm up to Schafer. He looks like he has a good understanding of what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do. He’s having good at-bats and not swinging for the fences like he used to. Plus, he’s an amazing center fielder.
I remain skeptical but hope he can keep it up.

It’s more fraustrating to hear and read the steady drumbeat of how he will shake this. It will be June in 2 days. First we heard a couple of weeks.Then we heard May.Now we are hearing June. Don’t you realize how silly this has become. Nobody knows if or when he comes out of this.Quit reacting to every ground single through the left side as if that is the moment. i know there are a bunch of geeks out there and I have a question.In the last 50 years has any “GOOD” Major League player ever put on a prolonged exhibion like this?Now I know there must have been some bad players who pulled something like this.Of course they all would have been sent down or benched by now.
