Braves’ hitting woes deepen; Arroyo anyone?

Tonight the Braves are facing a pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, who has been pretty awful in May, with an 0-3 record and 6.90 ERA. Which, of course, means the Braves are in trouble.

The Braves have struggled particularly against struggling or young pitchers. They face a struggling one tonight, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo.

The Braves have struggled particularly against struggling or young pitchers. They face a struggling one tonight, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo.

Because while they have difficulty scoring against just about any pitcher lately, these Braves have struggled especially against mediocre or struggling pitchers, guys with 5-plus ERAs, and/or pitchers they’ve not seen before.

Give ‘em a Cliff Lee and they go to work. Give ‘em a Marco Estrada, Jake Westbrook or Mike Leake and it’s trouble for the Bravos.

But like we said, right now it doesn’t seem to matter who they’re facing. The Braves, they just ain’t scoring. So when they get behind early, like Friday night against Cincy, it can be particularly difficult to watch them try to play come-from-behind.

(By the way, the Braves have lost 18 of 28 games against the Reds since the beginning of the 2007 season.)

Here’s a few numbers that detail the scope of the Braves’ offensive woes:

• They have scored 14 runs in the in their past seven games (3-4) and gone without a home run in six of the past eight.

• They have scored 27 runs in their last 11 games, which explains how they have just a 6-5 record in that span despite a 2.93 ERA. They’ve scored three runs or fewer in eight of those 11.

• They are 9-9 with a 3.24 ERA in their past 18 games, scoring 56 runs in that span.

Despite their excellent pitching, the Braves seem to fall behind a lot, don’t they?

Yes, a couple of their pitchers have had problems in the early innings. But a bigger reason for those early deficits is probably the fact that the Braves have scored just 126 runs in the first through sixth innings of 52 games.

Only the Dodgers, Giants and Padres have scored fewer runs in the first six innings.

This current 9-9 span for the Braves came immediately after an 11-3 stretch in which it looked like they were putting things together and might even take over the division lead like they did for three months last season.

They hit .260 while scoring 76 runs and posting a 2.31 ERA during that 14-game run through May 6, before the current 9-9 stretch began.

Arroyo has been either terrible or terrific in most recent starts against the Braves. He’s 4-3 with a 6.23 ERA in his past eight against them. That includes three wins where he gave up one or no runs in seven innings and four starts where he gave up five or more runs in 5-2/3 or fewer innings.

But in his past two against them, one in ’09 and one in ‘10, Arroyo has allowed just one run in 14 innings. He won both of those.

♣ Kimbrel gives up a homer: In his 51st big-league appearance, Craig Kimbrel finally gave up a home run Friday.

He came in to pitch the ninth with the Braves trailing 3-1 – Fredi Gonzalez’s explanation in a moment – and gave up a two-run homer to Ramon Hernandez.

It was the third two-run outing for Kimbrel in 10 appearances over 17 days, and the rookie closer has a 5.79 ER and .270 opponents’ average in that span, with 10 hits and six runs allowed in 9-1/3 innings.

Kimbrel went 4-0 with a 0.34 ERA and .132 opponents’ average in his first 27 regular-season appearances, giving up just one earned run, 10 hits and 17 walks with 50 strikeouts in 26-2/3 innings.

In 20 appearances since then, beginning April 17, he has a 4.26 ERA and .225 opponents’ average, with 16 hits, nine earned runs, 11 walks and 28 strikeouts in 19 innings. He has a 1-2 record and 10-of-14 saves converted in that span.

Kimbrel was bitten by the leadoff walk again last night. Here’s what first batters faced have done against him this season: 4-for-20 with six walks, 10 K, .385 OBP.

Once Kimbrel gets going, he’s been close to unhittable. But some have taken advantage of his occasional early command issues.

In the first 15 pitches of his appearances this season, hitters are 16-for-65 (.246) with nine walks and 22 strikeouts against Kimbrel. But after his 15th pitch, hitters are just 3-for-25 (.120) with three walks and 16 strikeouts.

Lowe hasn't pitched particularly well or deep into games since mid-April. He'll try to get back on track tonight.

Lowe hasn't pitched particularly well or deep into games since mid-April. He'll try to get back on track tonight.

Asked why Kimbrel was used in the ninth inning of a home game with the Braves trailing 3-1 on Friday, Gonzalez said: “Trying to keep the game right there. Trying to keep the [deficit] to two runs. Out of the [relievers] that we had left — we had [Jonny] Venters and we had [Cristhian] Martinez –  he [Kimbrel] is the only guy we feel comfortable throwing [just] one inning.

“The other guys we could throw two innings. Venters could throw two innings if we tie it. Martinez could throw four or five. The whole game you’ve got this gut feeling, and you go, Craig’s going to give you one inning right here and if we tie it, Venters can give you two, and Martinez can give you the rest.”

♣ Dan Uggla update: The Braves 2B has hit .176 (30-for-170) with a .568 OPS in 45 games going back to April 8, with five homers, 14 RBIs and 41 strikeouts.

Uggla is 7-for-61 (.115) with one extra-base hit (a homer), 2 RBI and a .396 OPS in his past 15 games (.226 OBP, .170 slugging).

His .125 average (6-for-48) with runners in scoring position is fifth-lowest in the NL, and none of the four players with averages as low as his have as many at-bats as Uggla in those situations (three have 33 or fewer at-bats with RISP).

His .183 overall average is second-worst among NL qualifiers, ahead of only ex-Brave Adam LaRoche (.172), who’s been playing with a torn labrum. Uggla’s .250 OBP is second-worst to Miguel Tejada’s .242.

His .585 OPS is third-worst behind LaRoche (.546) and Tejada (.522)

♣ Etc. Starting tonight for the Braves is Derek Lowe, who is 1-2 with a 4.62 ERA in his past seven starts. This after he’d gone 7-2 with a 1.46 ERA in nine starts from Sept. 1 through April 16. Lowe is 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA in his past five games (four starts) against the Reds…. It’s just three games, but Jordan Schafer has hit .308 (4-for-13) with 2 walks, 1 strikeouts and a .400 OBP batting leadoff since arriving from Triple-A….Several Braves have hit well against Reds starter Bronson Arroyo. Brian McCann is 6-for-14 with 2 HRs and 5 walks; Chipper Jones is 11-for-27 with 3 HRs, 10 RBIs and 6 walks; Eric Hinske is 11-for-28 with a homer, and Dan Uggla is 5-for-14 with a homer…. Scott Linebrink has a .100 opponents’ average in his past five scoreless appearances, including two innings Friday. He had a 12.60 ERA and .480 OA in his previous eight appearances…. Alex Gonzalez is a majors-worst 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position and two outs. McCann is 9-for-19 in those situations, fifth-best in the NL.

“I’M A LONESOME FUGITIVE” by Merle Haggard

Down every road there’s always one more city
I’m on the run, the highway is my home
I raised a lot of cane back in my younger days
While Mama used to pray my crops would fail
I’m a hunted fugitive with just two ways:
Outrun the law or spend my life in jail

I’d like to settle down but they won’t let me
A fugitive must be a rolling stone
Down every road there’s always one more city
I’m on the run, the highway is my home

I’m lonely but I can’t afford the luxury
Of having one I love to come along
She’d only slow me down and they’d catch up with me
For he who travels fastest goes alone

I’d like to settle down but they won’t let me
A fugitive must be a rolling stone
Down every road there’s always one more city
I’m on the run, the highway is my home

I’m on the run, the highway is my home

You never can really tell what you have on paper going into a season. The Braves’ pitching is at least on par with a Phillies staff that many were lauding as “the best ever”, while the emphasis to address the hitting (especially from the right side) has gone from a sure thing to at least an early disaster with Dan Uggla. But across the board, the most glaring reason this team is so inconsistent and frustrating to watch is the hitting. They’re not just making gut-wrenching outs; quite often they’re not making contact. It’s got to be deflating to our pitchers when they give up an early run or two and realize that may well be the difference in the outcome; good as they’ve been, it’s unfair to ask them to be perfect. I agree with the post above; Schafer has given the Braves a dimension (speed) that they haven’t had AT ALL so far; they need to find a place for him. As for the rest, however, let’s hope they somehow turn things around or the Braves will not be playing come October.

It is a little bit disconcerting that Chipper feels he has to call out the team for lack of intensity in games against lesser clubs, and in the early innings of most all games. On the surface this seems like a high character team that would not have to be spurred by their de-facto captain in the media.

I’m starting to miss Bobby (well, I missed Bobby the day he left, because he was one of the very best). The explanation for using your closer, who has had a lot of work already, in a game where you’re down by 2 runs was beyond convoluted. What, was Freddi playing for a 15-inning game? Did he watch the Phillies/Reds and get scared? You don’t use your closer there. Teams go through rough stretches, and that’s usually a good time to give the best bullpen guys a rest. Instead, we took a game we likely weren’t going to win anyway and wasted an appearance for our closer.

Terrible move, even worse explanation for it.

How come nobody beats up on the batting coach? TP was the most abused coach ever, but at least he taught the batters how take a walk. And what’s up with all these swings at pitches in the dirt? The line-up is pretty feeble this year. On the positive side, I did like the Spaceballs helmet Schaffer wore in Pittsburg. Go Braves.

What will probably happen, since this team rarely seems to be able to run on all cylandars, is Dan will finally, mercifully, come out of his slump, Chipper will go on a tear, and then, our pitching will collapse. Venters will suddenly crash to earth, and we will start losing games 8-7. They just haven’t been able to click consistently in all or even most facets of the game in several years.

Team hitting line for the year is: .242-.310-.380-.690. But it’s really worse than that because our bench players have higher stats than the starters.( Although I guess you could call Hinske a starter now). The highest any “regular” player is slugging is Chipper at a paltry .431 and he leads in OPS with a decent, but unspectacular .784. We maybe the only team to not have a starter with at least a .450 slugging % or with an .800 OPS. Yikes!

Kimbrel is fine, folks. He is on pace for 30 or so, and has been, for the most part, effective. Start tinkering with him and see what happens. We saw what he did last night in a non save situation. These guys are weird about their routines. plus, if you relegate Venters to closer, you remove the ability to let him go 2 innings.

BAS I don’t think you read my one post thoroughly my friend. I said that it might be one huge outlier where every player on the team is taking an OBP dump at the same time and totally forgot over the winter how to draw a walk,, which is what you seem to be saying. Perhaps so, seems pretty coincidental, but is certainly a possibility and if so like I said it is all on the players.
However if you are watching all the at bats it seems obvious that they are being more aggressive earlier in the count that they used to be,even Chipper -who I agree would likely not be affected much by Parrish but was used mostly to show how putrid the team OBP is at this point.
All kinds of possibilities no doubt. But I’m still betting that Larry and Fredi are trying a different approach, to whatever degree,if any, that might be the cause of the problem.
I think I remember a statement about Parrish believing in an aggressive approach, but I might be misremembering since I can’t find it now. Or it might have been about his hitting career for that matter.
In the end, no matter what or why it is incumbent upon the players to produce and that is where most of the problem always is no matter whether its Bobby or Fredi, Larry or Terry.

Even when McClouth and Heyward return there really won’t be much difference offensively. Heyward has struggled all year and McClouth( while improving tremendously) is not a real offensive threat (25 HR 100 RBIs type of player). I think the Braves will need to make a trade. (But for who). The problem for the Braves is that they really lack a superstar and they have no offensive threat. I think we should try to package McClouth(expiring contract), Mike Minor, Vizicaino, and 2 other minor leaguers for Matt Kemp. The Dodgers are in finicial ruin and I think will soon dump players (AKA 98 Marlins) obviously we will have to give him a $100+ million contract I think its a move that must be made or this team will win 85-90 games and miss the playoffs(like 2 years ago)

Their hitting woes are evident. Its hard to both watch and understand. I hold no credence to any blame upon hitting coach but if TP was still the hitting coach I wonder if voices would be calling for his job. But it sure makes you wonder what it is. Uggla is at the plate what Steve Sax was to a routine throw to first base. Tough to watch. Looks like he is wound way too tight. How do you fix that? That’s mental. Some have wondered in relation to McClouth that it is easier to be successful in PIT than in a more pressure lineup like ATL. Hope that is not the case-jus sayin. Maybe Shaffer’s speed will help- cause I dang sure don’t know. Major league hitters should hit regardless of place in lineup. Somebody has to step up and its not going to be from trying harder- work ethic is not the problem

Kimbrell really needs to work on getting out the first batter he faces, and especially not walking that batter. That’s a “DUH” statement huh? Methinks it’s time to switch he and Venters, but methought that 15-20 games ago. Why not let the best reliever in baseball close games for you? Because you want to lose MORE close games? It’s obvious that Kimbrell is struggling and Venters is not. Keep making poor decisions Fredi.

Is it against the law for a team to score 5-6 runs in a game at least OCCASIONALLY? To go game after game after game scoring 1,2 or 3 runs is just unacceptable. The offense is the reason that the Braves’ big three relievers have so many appearances. If the O doesn’t start putting up some runs, there will be some relievers arms falling off as they pitch.

well compared to what “McOUT” hit last season I would call it a tremendous improvement. And the thing about Mcclouth making about the same as Kemp thats true but he has a $500k buyout next season and thats when the Dodgers would save basically your throwing him in to fiil up a spot until he is a free agent the real deal would be Minor, Vizicaino, and the 2 other draft picks. Now obviously im not a GM but its gonna take something like that to get a Kemp and I personally think he is the best fit play to come here. definately better than the other tradable players (Jose Reyes, Prince Fielder, Adam Jones, Chone Figgins, or Michael Borne.

I meant McLouth is not nearly as good as Kemp, obviously. And if you include the buyout, Nate is making $100,000 more than Kemp is…bottom line, Dodgers are not going to trade Kemp. The financial situation is going to be cleared up in one of two ways- either the McCourts fail to make June payroll (they are covered for May) and MLB forces a sale OR MLB approves the deal between FOX and the team, which is worth an estimated $3 billion and would give them $300 million up front, which would cover costs for the season

Coco Crisp in my opinion wouldnt be a upgrade at all. I much rather give Schafer alot of time to prove himself than actually give up something for a 702. OPS OFer as NOLIE said.

Grady Sizemore has a 7+ million option for next season, BUT if he’s traded that becomes gaurenteed year. The Indians will most likely wait til after the season to possibly deal him. With the way there playing he wont be traded during the season, and teams prolly wanna see him be healthy the rest of the season instead of taking a risk and paying him that money to be on the DL for all of 2012 or something.

The Braves should really just go with what we have. Give Schafer plenty of Playing time. Keep our prospects. Our pitching has carried us this far, You have to think Heyward and Uggla will contribute eventually. We need to see if Jordan is our guy for 2012.

Sizemore another lefty, not sure what we need right now. Speaking of which, did we use Mathers already earlier in the game PH last night? Didn’t like the matchup with Hinske against the lefty late and not sure why Fredo didn’t make that switch.

Schafer,Nate, Heyward, McCann, Freeman. I liked to pick up a RH bat starter if they make a blockbuster trade. Pence is a very solid major leaguer. I don’t think he plays CF though or if he can. Funny some judge him defensively because of his throwing motion. It does look goofy. I

Hunter Pence is a nice player. He’s the best player on a terrible team. He’ll cost around 10 million for 2012 after arbritration. He could play CF but would be below average long term there. He could put up better numbers being surrounded by better players you would think. But this guy will hit 280. with 25 dingers and swipe 15 bags or so for ya. 800+ OPS guy as well. Look at the NL this year. Cardinals, Giants, Phillies, Marlins, maybe Cincy and Milwaukee. Nothing dominant here. I hate to speculate on what could have been this year with how talented our staff has been from top to bottom. When Uggla and Heyward start hitting(they will) is this still going to be enough to win a pennant. Love Haas man but I am worried about him. 3 walks and getting on base is nice but can he carry this team for a stretch? I have doubts. Pence if you can get improves this team offensively obviously. Not sure what that defense looks like though. I hope FW goes for it this year and pulls a major deal. Giants with all of their goofy pickups last year in the second half made it happen.

Heyward clarified something today, said wear-and-tear in right shoulder is in the labrum, not rotator cuff (original diagnosis we were given was rotator-cuff inflammation, after the first MRI).

Mathman is accurate in his calculation.

I cannot understand for the life of me why people hate on Schafer so much. He has speed, makes good contact, can bunt, covers a LOT of ground, and has a good arm. Why won’t you folks acknowlwedge that he played half a season with a broken wrist? This trip up will be the first time we see him healthy; he was almost as highly regarded as Heyward when he came up the first time, before the injury.

JS is in fact the only real LO hitter we have had since Furcal (and while everyone is trashing the Braves management, we let him go at the right time). Give him a month healthy and see if we need to give up anything for a Crisp (downgrade) or Pence (too expensive and not much of an upgrade) or Sizemore (too expensive AND risky, and not a true leadoff hitter).

Schafer is better than McLouth in EVERY category (average, strikeouts, basestealing, baserunning instincts, contact hitting, bunting, outfield range, arm strength). Maybe McLouth has more power (15HR vs 10?) but the margin is thin.

WHY would you even CONSIDER reinserting McLouth?

We should be doing much better than just Nate. I like Jordan better, always have. Even when struggling, you can feel the kid is trying HARD, just like Freeman or Jason……….you can feel they into it. I dont see that in Nate. I have always seen him as a weakness. A player that has spend half his days in Atlanta batting 8th, tons of days on DL (not that its a sin to be DLed, but that tells me he is not durable).

I MEAN, THIS IS THE ONLY TEAM IN BASEBALL THAT PAYS 6.5M FOR AN 8TH PLACE HITTER. Just release the guy……….Seen Jordan makes me sick to remember that Nate is our regular.

With Prado I think it’s the supporting cast and glum environment. He’s hitting .283, 6HR 29R and 29RBI. Those are not “force” numbers but they are not bad. If he had only 6 more hits, he’d be hitting .310, so… it’s hard to say he’s in a deep slump or off year. He’s about in line.

elsewhere noleee

I understand we don’t have to use him there noleee. I’m just saying that the vast majority of his career was spent in the 2 and 5 holes and that’s where most of his HRs and RBIs came from. Personally, I figure if you are a legit big league hitter, you oughta be able to hit wherever they put you. I refuse to believe that putting him in the cleanup spot will all of a sudden make him not clueless as he has been all year. And you can put a great hitter behind him and he will still not recognize a fastball right in his wheel house. last night was a great example. He had his chances, but he must not be seeing the ball very well so far.

Chipper worked hard on his comeback and had a big ST and good first month of the season, but now he is wearing down and his average and power drop by the month. He seems to be compensating for a slower bat by doing a lot of guessing and either going after bad pitches or watching too many good ones. He is not the straw that stirs this team’s drink (more the one that breaks the camel’s back) He may have a few good spurts from time-to-time, but he is hurting this team in the middle of the lineup — (not that there are a lot of better candidates, just that he is not a very good one)

Hopefully the timeoff will cure Heyward’s injury woes, give him a better exercise routine, and some time to watch film and rehab in the minors to close up a few holes in his swing. He needs to be the impact player we thought he was going to be. If he is, he MUST be moved into the 3-hole as soon as he shows he has recovered. If he is not, there aren’t enough Hunter Pences out there to fix this team in the near/short term.

It seems somewhat incongruous that since I imposed my self inflicted moratorium on discussing a certain player that said player is now being mentioned in a negative fashion more than ever.

I believe only a select groupof players would be negatively impacted by a shift in batting order position. One of these would be the egomaniacal shortstop of the Florida Marlins who thinks it permissable to hit around.200 and still keep 2nd or 3rd spot in a batting order. These guys are basically children who have no concept of responsibility to the guys paying their salary or their teammates. If I managed the Marlins, ramirez would be hitting 8th where he deserves to hit. case Closed!!

Based upon the Detroit press and fan reaction this is probably Senor Smokes(Leyland) and Dumbo’s(Dombrowski) last few months on the job ulless they pull out a miracle.based upon how you have abused Dumbo in the past can you think of any possible trades that the Braves might be able to pull off. The Tigers need a 2B, SS, 3B and a corner outfielder. They have potential in middle infielders in the minors and appear to have young pitching about to hit the Majors. The Tigers most tradeable–but highly suspicious pieces would be Ryan Raburn, Ramon santiago. they have quality arms in Furbush and Oliver and some power arm relievers. Do you see a match.you know if you trade with Dombo you will probably win.

nolie,

It wasn’t just the one post; I’ve seen you make many the last month saying pretty much the same thing. As always, which I appreciate, you’re saying maybe/maybe not, but it seems to me you’re pretty firm on the side of a changed approach. And, you’re right, I also recall the quote, from either Skip or Parrish, that the guys were going to be more aggressive. So, you certainly have reason to believe such.

I guess where I’m at: Prado and Gonzalez have always been attack-first guys; I don’t think you can see a change there. McCann’s, Uggla’s, and 10’s walks were due, in large part IMO, to being pitched around, or pitched very carefully. If they are not hitting, or at least not hitting with damage, which they’re not, some of those walks are going to go away. Plus, all three have had tremendous success doing it their way, and I can’t believe would change for a new coach. (I also think Chipper’s bat has slowed, or at minimum he’s not seeing it well right now, and so he’s having to start sooner. But there’s no way he’s changing his Hall of Fame approach unless his eyes/hands/bat-speed have forced him to. Certainly not Larry Parrish.)

Freeman’s new, and has performed, I would say, exactly how we expected, so I can’t go Parrish there. Heyward’s approach seems to be what it was, to me. I think he’s taking a seeing a similar number of pitches as last year, though I haven’t checked on anybody. He just ain’t hittin’ nearly as many…

The one guy left is McLouth, and I do think he’s been more aggressive this year. I think it’s been a noticeable change. But, I also think this has been an improvement, for him. I think he was far too passive last year.

So, I said all that, to say: Parrish ain’t it. Guys are struggling, but as soon as some hits fall, those approaches’ll look just fine…

Been away all day so I didn’t get to see your response to my comment this a.m.

Just a quick thanx for the clubhouse insight on those two calls at second last night. The announcers were calling them safe on both counts and I agreed. Very interesting there was no comment either way from management or players. Not necessarily a good development to my mind.

Still, I think COX would at least have gotten a clarification on the field from the ump. Having FG stay in the dugout was definitely different, but that’s him I guess. New game in town all ’round.

I think the thing relaxing Jordan is the fact that we don’t need him to come up and try to hit a home run every time up, which is what he tried to do two seasons ago. We’ll be just fine with him playing within his game which is a .250-.270 hitter, good speed, and finally a decent arm in the outfield.

Question is, if he keeps this up what to do with Nate. He makes way too much to be sitting around on the bench. He could maybe bring back a decent bullpen arm in a trade. Who knows, I’m just happy Schafer looks to have figured things out.

Guys, I think your anger is misguided. This is going to happen to pitchers from time to time. The offense should have been manhandling all those mediocre pitchers over the past couple weeks but instead sat back like lambs and made the pitchers work their tails off to keep games close. I posted about this earlier: as soon as the offense wakes up and realizes they have to score runs to win, our pitchers will come back to earth.

THIS TEAM NEVER HAS IT ALL TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME. Same garbage every year–they manage to tie one shoe and then the other comes undone.

And of course, since the Braves typically score nil in the first 5 innings and then come to life in the last couple, they’ll now fade out and score nothing in the later innings.

this is a very good example of “deflating”. Team has trouble scoring runs, then they’re able to break through and score 5 over 3 innings … and then in just 1 inning your starter gives up the same run total.

Lowe failed in a big way tonight.

Tomahawk Mafia

May 28th, 2011
8:47 pm

As much as I would love to agree with the bashing of Fredi Gonzalez with his reluctance to remove Lowe from the game, but I respectfully disagree. Sure he had no command at all, but as a manager he needed to just be confident he could keep the damage to a minimum and atleast pitch 5 innings. That obviously failed to happen, but a manager never wants to take a pitcher with a lead out in the 4th inning. Furthermore, this reminds me of that game in late ‘09 where Lowe had a sizable lead against the Mets at Citi Field and Cox left him in give up the lead relatively early in the game and it became a blowout in favor of the Mets.

I forget the numbers, but Hudson hasn’t had a Hudsonesque game in almost a month I believe. And Hanson may have only given up two runs but he didn’t make it to the 5th for the second game in a row. His command was off and he had a high pitch count. And this is also Lowes second poor start in a row. I agree that the offense (and occasionally the D) has been the culprit this season, but the starters, other the JJ (and the lone Minor start), has struggled recently.

Venters and Linebrink almost certainly will be rested tomorrow, and O’Flaherty wasn’t used tonight because of back tightness, not a big deal but they want to make sure it doesn’t become one.

Tomas

May 29th, 2011
12:32 am

How about acquiring Carlos Beltran in the offseason……..to play RF or LF, hear me out.

He is still a pretty decent hitter, he is old and injury prone so he is gonna need days off no doubt. But so does Heyward and Chipper, so what Beltran provides is an opportunity to rest everybody in rotation.

They should keep Alex Gonzalez, and Jordan Schafer in the big league club.

So let’s say Braves play 7 games in a week.

Monday:
LF Martin Prado
RF Carlos Beltran
3B Chipper Jones
C Brian McCann
2B Dan Uggla
CF Jason Heyward
1B Freddy Freeman
SS Alex Gonzalez

Tuesday:
CF Jordan Schafer
3B Martin Prado
LF Carlos Beltran
C Brian McCann
2B Dan Uggla
RF Jason Heyward
1B Freddy Freeman
SS Alex Gonzalez

Wednesday:
CF Jordan Schafer
LF Martin Prado
3B Chipper Jones
C Brian McCann
2B Dan Uggla
RF Jason Heyward
1B Freddy Freeman
SS Alex Gonzalez

And so on……

This just gives the lineup a lot of depth. If Chipper gets injured, so what you’ve got Beltran bat playing everyday, if Heyward gets injured you sub him with Beltran, and if Beltran goes down who cares Heyward and Chipper play everyday.

Heck if Uggla doesn’t turn it around, Prado could play 2B, with Beltran/Schafer/Heyward as the outfielders.

Well, classic Braves.

Certainly no three game series is complete without deer in the headlights game, usually the opener, the one where you can pretty much tell it’s over before the last out in the first inning is made.

Then there’s the rousing second game where they come out determind to show they aren’t total push-overs. Usually it’s a bit of a back and forth affair and one in which they tend to come out on top. And then they go to the clubhouse patting each other on the back and act like they won the World Series.

Now if tomorrow were a Sunday SportSouth day game with a 1:35 start time, you’d have to think the Braves would ride the back of yet another dominant pitching performance from JJ to a relatively easy win with maybe some late runs to make it look like more of a blow out than it really is.

But since instead they’ll be featured under the bright lights of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, a major choke job should be in order. A couple of first inning errors leading to some early cheap runs for the Reds should hold up the rest of the way.

Expect the Braves to have plenty of chances throughout and come up empty each time.

Or who knows? Maybe they’ll win.

I finally figured out why Hanley is so screwed up and showing really bad signs of not coming out of this. He misses his former DP partner. Hanley is sitting there with a miniscule 17 RBI’s and once again Infante gets the big RBI tonight to give some breathing room to the pen. If hanley and Omar go down to the wire tto see who has the most RBI’s, i may have to withdraw the statement i wrote 3 minutes ago.

hanley is really messed up and i do give the Marlins announcers credit for not sugar coating it. He is a former NL Batting Champion and one of the announcers basically said “You can no longer definitively count on what the back of his baseball card says.”

I just love that I waited all week to see if this damn team could score five runs so I could get a discount on an oil change and then I finally bite the bullet and get one right before going to the game and what do they do?

They score seven runs.

And you know, it’s not even about the discount. It doesn’t really cost that much in the first place. It would be nice, a discount. But this team… they mess with your head, man.

Their sense of timing is screwy.

I mean, my oil light is blinking for the past two weeks. I have to make a round trip drive to one of our glorious neighboring states manyana and then suddenly they score seven runs two weeks later on a Saturday night.

Hopefully the bullpen can get some work tomorrow. They could really use it. They’ve been so gently used lately.

Not.

Ha! Hilarious.

Was out there last year for a conference–though was in Berkeley for most of the time. The West Coast is great. I am moving back to the East Coast this summer but always love making it out West. Not the coast, but when I lived in Santa Fe, I loved going out hiking in the mountains every day.

Loving that win last night – if for nothing else, that McFann should be thrilled this morning after that game Mac had. Nice to see Freddie starting to roll at home, too.

Braveheart – Venters as a starter in the minors was not such a good thing. Kind of hard to figure what was what since he started and relieved, but his one year in Gwinnett, he started all 17 games he was in. He had a 5.62 ERA in 91 IP, with a 1.69 WHIP and only 58K with 42 BB.

Seems theres a pretty good reason he’s not starting anymore. But maybe all those innings pitched as a tarter are helping his stamina with as often as he’s used. That being said, it’s really hard NOT to use him, as good as he’s been.

DH ADAM MILLIGAN [.261 BA] 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR [7], 4 RBI [22].

In the nightcap, soph DAN JURIK [ND, 2.08 ERA] starts and goes four allowing only two hits and one run/earned run, three base-on-balls and two strike-outs with a gopher ball. He’s a little wild with the location yet, but seems to aggressively go after hitters.

Seven hits with one double and two HR’s stand up.

Rivera blew a game for the Yankees last night. I wonder if their bloggers are clamoring for MFIKY to be closer

Whats suprising with Oakland Big 3 is Hudson hasnt really lived up either and he is by far the best of the big 3. None of them came close to living up to their expectations.

Lew, you only have half his numbers for 09. He was in 29 games, all as a starter and pitched 156.2 innings. He was a starter in AA and AAA

Eric – What were their expectations? That they be the next Glavne, Maddux and Smoltz? Maybe now people will begin to realize just how special those three were for so long and how lucky we were to see three incredible baseball careers and to have them in Atlanta for ten years. And maybe we’ll begin to realize that since it so rarely happens, that maybe we can’t judge all pitching by their example for all time to come.

Jordan is making a case for himself for staying up with Braves when McLouth comes off the DL. I don’t think Nate would have made that catch last night.

Sorry brien, the honey-do list is close at hand. Have to get back to you on CLEMENS. He’s from DOB’s old neiighborhood. Had a few flashes last season. Seems to be coming around. Maybe the blog-meister has a clue or two on him.

Schafer has earned CF already in my opinion. He adds speed at the top of order we have not seen since days of Furcal. Plus McLousy does not track down that drive to left center like Schafer hauled in yesterday. Defense, speed and his uniform stays dirty. I like it!

keylargo – Thanks. Still, think he’s best suited to relief work if he wasn’t any better than that at AAA. Must be one of those “two or three times through the batting order” situations.

Give ‘em a Cliff Lee and they go to work. Give ‘em a Marco Estrada, Jake Westbrook or Mike Leake and it’s trouble for the Bravos.

I was just thinking this the other day, its amazing really. Seems every struggling pitcher finds a way to confound the braves no matter how bad they have done against every other team this season they always seem to find their groove against this team. Can’t honestly say why or make sense of it at all. Maybe its their approach to hitting but do you really want to change that to much when they have had so much success against the better pitchers. I’m not sure how to solve this riddle but the braves need to figure it out. Its the difference in the division. Phillies aren’t the unbeatable juggernaut that so many predicted them to be, but they beat the teams they are suppose to beat and that’s why they are in first. Braves need to find a way to do the same.

a pitcher that a team has never seen B4 always has an advantage, at least for a while
