“Closer”: def. – a relief pitcher who specializes in closing out games, i.e., getting the final outs in a close game. Closers often appear when the score is close, and the role is often assigned to a team’s best reliever. [Wikipedia]
Given the definition of a closer, why is Johnnie V not filling that role for the Braves? Can you have a better line than this: 2ER, 22 K, .083 ERA, .69 WHIP?
Gonzo should be benched tomorrow. I know it wont help the team but it sends a message. Oh wait I forgot Fredi doesnt want to hurt feelings, lookm at Kimbrel. Its not like this is the big leagues.
I have no problem believing that Alex Gonzalez’s teammates are happier with him than they were with Yunel Escobar. And, in terms of production, I’ve been pretty satisfied with the trade.
That said, Alex sure does a lot of “Escobar-esque” things on the field, that leave you scratching your head from time to time.
Interesting. I HATE when a player dogs it on a hit like Gonzo just did. He should get an ear full from Fredi, and maybe get sat down for a game.
And then there’s Mitchell, who instead of saying something like “terrible play by Gonzo”, he instead states “Still so much to dislike about this team.”
What did the “team” do in that half inning to dislike? It looked like to me Gonzo blew it. None of the other 24 screwed up that inning, unless you want to count FF and Mather for making an out….God forbid!
If you are so embarrassed by “your” team, why don’t you find another team? Maybe go for the Yankees or the Red Sox???
Or if you just want to bitch, then take on the Pirates or Houston or KC. Lots to dislike about those franchises.
Was that Yunel Escobar doing a little premature home run trot in the bottom of the 9th?
Oh, no. Alex Gonzalez.
Could’a fooled me for a second there. Of course, if that had been Yunel Escobar there would be a sidebar piece in the paper tomorrow along with the game story about how Yunel’s antics and lackadaisical play that are causing friction in the Braves clubhouse.
If Fredi’s comment earlier about not wanting to “damage the confidence” of Kimbrel was true, just think what impact it would have to give up a run here and be responsible for back-to-back losses!
Look at Kimbrel? What, you think he should be punished for giving up runs? You are right about one thing- benching Alex would hurt the team. What good does that do?
Alex Gonzalez got on my hate list last year for failing to run out that soft liner the Giants dropped in the playoffs, thus killing any chance we had of coming back. He was just beginning to work his way back into my good graces, and now this. Once a loafer, always a loafer. If Fredi had sat his butt on the bench for the 10th inning, that would have sent a strong message.
cabravesfan, no he should not be sat. I do think he should be demoted to the set up man though. Truly its more Venters great pitching than Kimbrel. I was making the point that fredi is just soft as a manager.

This won’t get answered tonight: first, Linebrink, is the statistical sample predictive at this point? Lord, we’ve got stats for “righties/lefties/fullmoon/day/night/close n’ late/and every other damn thing – but no stats that say “ain’t happn’in this year”? I understand that for Mather, the team’s 25th player striking out 6 of his first 12 at bats is obviousluly non-predictive – but when is the sample “statistically significant” (even better, when is it a “strong indicator”?)

JULIO TEHERAN [ND, 1.91 ERA, 1.06 WHIP] goes 7.2 innings tonight, allows three hits, two runs both earned with three walks and seven strike-outs.
ANTHONY VARVARO [3.26 ERA] relieves 2.1 IP, 2 H, zeros, 1 BB, 4 SO.
JUAN ABREU [1.00 ERA] 2.0 IP, no hits, 1 BB, 1 SO.
JAIRO ASENCIO [W1-1, 2.19 ERA] 2.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 SO.
SCOTT PROCTOR [SV 3, 1.06 ERA] finishes the game with a perfect 15th inning and a SO.
Not much hitting, but G-BRAVES pull it out 4-2.
MATT YOUNG [.323 BA] with the only multi [2] hit game tonight.
LF WILKIN RAMIREZ [.231 BA] with his sixth HR in five AB’s, two walks.
RF STEVE GARTRELL [.242 BA] wins the game with a moon-shot and one on in the top of the fifteenth. PROCTOR slams the door.
DH MAURO GOMEZ has another O-fer night dropping his BA to a mere mortal .352, while JORDAN SCHAFER [.264 BA] is 0-6 in the lead-off slot..
