It’s funny on blogger says these guys are a bunch of pansies for not playing through injuries. Then the next blogger says if they are clearly injured why are they allowed to play?
So, if a player said to a reporter, “It only hurts when I’m thrown down and in fastballs” , how long do you think it would take to get that information out and 3 guess as to where every pitch from that moment on will be thrown…
Pretty much everyone knew something was wrong with J-Hey, we just did not know what. Facts are, injuries and news of weaknesses travel faster than rumors of infidelity in a Baptist prayer circle.
I assume Heyward is, or wants to be, a team player. Whatever is best for the team. Well, he’s going about it the wrong way. Being tough and playing through an injury (and going something like 2 for 25) is not helping the team, quite the opposite. Hell, I could do a better job than Heyward and I’m on old age pension.
I said that because Fredi said it’s been bothering him for 7 – 10 days.
It was either Heyward didn’t tell the medical staff, or Fredi was lying.
Tom O’Hawke, Fredi saying it’s been bothering him for 7-10 days isn’t necessarily the same as Heyward not telling him or the medical staff 7-10 days ago. They could have known about the shoulder issue for a while but it may have only really started to bother him 7-10 days ago.
DOB – I like how you snark at me on the last blog in the comments section, but then you basically quote me on this one. Anyway, I’m just the messenger. Jordan was the one who scooped you, not me. I think you should ask him why he knew and you didn’t.
What Jordan said on the 4/24 postgame show was that he saw Heyward grimace on a swing earlier that week and he asked him if the right shoulder was bothering him. He said Heyward said yes, it’s been hurting since spring training, to which Jordan said, well you gotta figure out how to make an adjustment. And then he said (paraphrasing) “I don’t think that HR today was because of my advice, because I think he’s smart enough on his own, but it looks like he has made an adjustment.”
Why didn’t Heyward tell you this? I don’t know, but would guess it’s the same reason he didn’t tell Fredi or a bunch of other people… he was trying to be a tough guy.

Part of a player’s consideration of his value to his team is to realize that reckless aggressive play has two sides. Maybe taking an extra base with a head-first slide puts him in scoring position. Or on the DL. That extra base isn’t worth it if he misses several (63) games. It’s exciting to see a wall-crashing catch, but waiting to see if he gets up isn’t much fun.

Gil is right. You have to be careful about information given. You are probably basing your opinion on what is given out by the NFL. Their injury reports (fairly detailed) are required. My opinion is that this was dictated primarily because of Las Vegas (and all the other gambling, for that matter) which is a major factor in driving interest in football.
In the NHL, they are practically paranoid about the injury information, for fear of an opponent using that information agains the player who is hurt. You do not want the rest of the league knowing your weaknesses, if possible.

DOB asked Heyward when it had started bothering him during spring training — “Towards the end, the last two weeks maybe,” he said – and if there had been anything in particular, any incident, in spring training that caused the injury.
“No, nothing in particular,” Heyward said. “Other than just swinging, playing baseball.”
He was then asked if it had affected his swing.
Heyward already has seven homers this season, but he’s a league-worst 2-for-28 with 13 strikeouts in May.
“Most definitely, it has,” Heyward said. “It’s not been a consistent swing. It hasn’t felt good, really, for any consistent period of time. I tried to play through it….”
This injury may have gotten worse in the last week or so, but it sure sounds as if it was bothering him long before that.

Same old stuff though, different scapegoat (Heyward). Can’t we give this guy a break? I mean what’s with all the vile towards this guy? Let’s go out and win the series! Beat Lannan!
Tom O’Hawke, I think your 4:10pm is hardly definitive proof that Heyward was keeping it secret from everyone in the organization. I think the most likely explanation is that, within the last 7-10 days, Fredi and the organization knew this was something that was so bothersome that it might cause him to eventually miss time or possibly go on the DL.
Another thing that complicates all this is that it’s probably difficult for a player to know, when the adrenaline is flowing, if something is so bothersome as to keep him from being effective. A player probably thinks he can play through something that is nagging him and doesn’t really recognize it until it really starts to get worse.
Heyward probably wasn’t intentionally trying to keep pain or an injury from his manager or the organization. Fredi and the organization probably knew things were nagging him, even if they didn’t know specifics.
Perhaps this says something about the baseball folks and the training staff getting together and pressing players about whether anything is bothering them that might affect their play. I think an organization has to consider that a player has every incentive to try to play through nagging pain or injuries. It takes more than just, “Do you feel okay? Yes? Then, go get ‘em.”
I’m not saying this is what happened with Heyward. No one has any clue why he was allowed to play through pain or injury. And perhaps the player and the organization did everything right and this is just one of those things that happens in baseball.
As for credibility, I think over the course of a few seasons, one can figure out who can be relied upon and who can’t. That said, even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while but that is why so many folks play the lottery. Always a chance lightning will strike. Much like blog wisdom… but different…
Interesting tidbits from BSPN Jayson Stark column -
You don’t see many pitchers’ duels like that Cliff Lee-Derek Lowe classic on Friday. In fact, we know for a fact we haven’t seen ANY games like that in the past 62 seasons. Eric Seidman, of FanGraphs and brotherlyglove.com fame, tells Rumblings there hasn’t been another game since 1950 in which one starting pitcher (Lee) piled up 16 strikeouts before the other starter (Lowe) gave up a hit. In fact, there have been only three previous games in that span in which a starter even reached double figures in whiffs before his team got a hit: Nolan Ryan (13) on June 8, 1977; Sam McDowell (11) on May 1, 1968; and Ryan again (10) on April 26, 1990.
How amazing is it that Jo-Jo Reyes has won NONE of his past 25 starts? First off, he’s just the fourth pitcher to have a winless streak that long since 1922, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The others: Matt Keough (28), Bob Miller (27) and Anthony Young (27). Second, during Reyes’ winless streak, four different pitchers have won at least 15 of their past 25 starts: Roy Halladay (17), Trevor Cahill (16), Adam Wainwright (15) and Jon Lester (15).
When I hit a slump in the office, I always tell my manager it’s cause i’m injured to….same deal right?
He’ll hit a homerun soon enough and tell reporters he’s healthy again.
Kids gotta learn to battle these slumps which he will. I’m not worried about J-Hey. I am worried about giving up a 7-1 lead again and trying to fight back!
If KK get get on the mound and pitch halfway decent before the trading deadline, the Braves maybe able to get a prospect for his services the remainder of the year.
Moylo will be out 8-10 weeks, don’t rush it dude. We got cheryl and linebreak to ease your abscence. Come back stronger than ever. EOF is filling your role nicely.
Another thing that complicates all this is that it’s probably difficult for a player to know, when the adrenaline is flowing, if something is so bothersome as to keep him from being effective. A player probably thinks he can play through something that is nagging him and doesn’t really recognize it until it really starts to get worse. (Shaun)
That could be true, Shaun, but no excuse in my opinion. Something hurting, find out if it’s nothing, or something serious.

GO BRAVES!

Definitive proof?! How can I, or any of us, give definitive proof. This is all about opinion.
I gave you my opinion, Shaun. raleighbravefan said it best, IMO, a few comments ago. It’s in the interpretation.
Until I hear differently, you know my interpretation. Maybe time will tell, maybe not.
