I go to many MLB games and I’m amazed–except in New York and Philadelphia–by the civility of the people going to the games. Atlanta is definitely the least offensive and you wonder if there is anyone who shows up at Athens in the Fall who actually goes to Braves games in the Summer??The people who actually heckle anyone around MLB are in a distinct minority.i always sit close and give my commentary but NEVER make it personal(appearance, wife, kids, outside conduct) but performance on the field is WIDE OPEN.I don’t know exactly what these people said to Roger but it seems he could have laughed anything off EXCEPT for anyone astute enough to bring out low moments in his career that would get to him—and you AGAIN do NOT mention the wife, kids, physical traits or past circumstances of life. At least that’smy code of conduct and I’m a pretty effective heckler and if a guy put a bat between his legs in reaction to something i said, at that point I’m laughing and not getting mad.

Here’s some excerpts from the interview that Gwen Knapp of the SF Chronicle posted that “backs” (I’m being facetious here, lol) the assertion of the “gay Cubs fan” who said that McDowell was kool with gay fans:
(In an interview, Achondo said he did hear an apparent allusion to San Francisco’s large gay population as McDowell said he would shove a bat up three fans’ backsides: “That’s how you like it here, right?”)
Achondo said he heard no profanity, and the incident began with three fans chanting at Atlanta’s David Ross: “We like our Ross better.”
Achondo wrote that the coach, whom he could not identify when he submitted his letter, turned and started shouting that he would “shove this bat up you’re (sic) a-, all the way-yup all three of you.”
After McDowell left, Achondo said, his 7-year-old seemed unusually withdrawn and eventually started to cry. “I didn’t know why, and he just said: ‘I’m hungry,’ ” Achondo said. “My kid doesn’t cry when he’s hungry.”
I’m amazed by the “softness” of “journalists”????? who cover teams.I think they should realize that teams have a vested interest in being covered and IF a team ever denied access to a writer, it would be responsibility of his or her employer to tell the team “Hey , you mess with our reporter’s access and you can get your coverage from the Macon Monitor and the Gwinett Journal.”
“Hey , you mess with our reporter’s access and you can get your coverage from the Macon Monitor and the Gwinett Journal.”
Lets not forget this is a business and the AJC benefits by covering Braves baseball. And if DOB or CR got ‘banned’ from the clubhouse, my guess is they’d be looking for another job.
What concerns me is that there have been no reports of David Ross or any other player that may have been out there stepping in and trying to get McDowell out of there. The gestures are one thing, but you have to think if McDowell was really approaching that Quinn guy with a bat in a threatening manner that someone would have pushed McDowell away.
Knowing one’s self and one’s standards in tremendously improtant, jeffrey. You will probably never be caught in the moral middle ground. Besides, there is bacon on that sammich.
That is why he would veto the trade my original point. Unless he is traded to a team playoff team in need of a closer he will veto making this whole idea of yours a pointless exercise. He has up to ten teams he can veto. The idea that his option won’t vest even with the Mets is based upon what? 30% to 33% is not far off the pace. He like anyone wants a 17.5 mil salary. Would you blame him especially since he will not get that on the open market? Matt Caps finished 66 last year playing for a bad Washington and then being traded to a playoff team that needed a closer. So 55 is not this untouchable number you think it is. It is not like the contract vest if he breaks the record of 80 something. Do you not realize if he had finished 9 instead of 8 with the Mets he would be on pace. 1 game off the pace this EARLY and you are positive it won’t vest?
And if the Braves trade for him to be their closer but then keep him pace low by inserting Kimbrel or Venters rest assured the players union will take him to court. There are plenty of examples and the players association usually wins or settles in the players favor.
So once again it is not going to happen. KRod will veto it. I do not read this blog enough to know if you are actually serious with this stuff or just trying to stimulate conversation. Because even overlooking the fact that the Braves can’t afford these players in July much less today KRod would obviously veto it. He wants his $17.5 mil and can you blame him?
It’s obnious that DOB will NEVER comment on this–I guess he thinks I’m being facetious–but I continue to remain amazed the AJC did NOTHING in response to Hudson’s confrontation with DOB when the “gutsy” Timmy blamed DOB for the Griffey acquisition not going through. AJC should have demanded an apology or terminated coverage until it was forthcoming.
At my job there’s a “BLT Meeting” once a month. Let me tell you, that name is very misleading. I went once, and was greatly disappointed when there was not a single BLT at the Building Leadership Team meeting.
Did you read the witness account that came out today? Sheds a whole new light on this…
Not really, he’s more so agreeing with the Quinn guy from what he saw, still doesn’t mean he saw everything and we know all the details. Once again that’s not to excuse Roger’s behavior but we have had conflicting reports from different people. The truth is somewhere mixed in all of that.

Lou Vales………..The Braves management knows that many Braves fans want to see nothing but GOOD, POSITIVE things reported about their team.
Many fans cringe at the thought of anything negative said about the players they root for (no different than parents who get mad at teachers who have anything bad to say about their kids…even if their kids arent studying and are being disruptive in class).
New York fans, on the other hand, want to see THE TRUTH from the reporters who cover their teams. New York fans want to know WHY their teams are not winning or playing badly. New York fans will rip their own players if they arent performing.
Meanwhile, “great” start for the Braves (first 2 Cardinal runners getting on base with Pujols coming up, lol).
Jake, it corroborates that Roger made the gay slurs, used the bat to make sexual gestures and threatened Quinn. I really don’t need to know more than that. It doesn’t matter what was said to him because it’s his job to ignore hecklers and go about his duties. He admitted his guilt when he apologized and MLB admitted it by “punishing” him.
New York fans, on the other hand, want to see THE TRUTH from the reporters who cover their teams. New York fans want to know WHY their teams are not winning or playing badly.
Maybe if they were not New Yorkers they could figure it for themselves, by watching the games.
Just realized this comment I put up an hour ago never got submitted. Anyway, it was the McDowell story, which is what I was working on and why the blog is late:

Derek may be a little preoccupied with cell block politics. It is tough to concentrate on pitching to the Cardinals when you have several impending trades of cigarettes for laundry soap, ramen noodles, and an extra dinner roll on the chow line. Also, when it appears that the guys in the next cell block are organizing to move in on your cigarette trade territory there are many more important things to think about than making the absolute correct pitch to Matt Holliday. Anyone who has seen “Oz” should be sympathetic.
it corroborates that Roger made the gay slurs, used the bat to make sexual gestures and threatened Quinn. I really don’t need to know more than that. What gay slur did he say he said, I don’t remember reading that. If you are implying he insinuated something, the way philly fans and others alike like to insinuate southerners sleep with their siblings then that sounds like what he did, but he didn’t “slur” them. Obviously the gestures weren’t good, but once he was alerted to the fact kids were around it doesn’t say he continued to make the gesture. Quinn was accused by another fan of threatening or provoking Roger and Visa versa, a whole lot of he say she say.
The only thing I will agree on is Roger’s actions were out of line, I just wish I know all of what happened because i’m guessing there is more to this story then a coach just going psychotic and attacking innocent children and fathers for no reason at all. We all should be responsible for our actions. Not just Roger.
Our 2011 braves mantra: Dont worry; its early.
Actudlly, they just suck.
Chipper should go hunting instead of spending the remainder of his 30’s with these clowns.
Dear Back To Normal, I’m a 1969 Florida Grad–BIG surprise—and I’ve actually been banned from Florida Web Sites because I have the audacity to question the coaching staff in regards to strategy and other decision making. The last straw was when I expressed disgust with how they allowed certain players to remain on team after transgressions. Maybe Muschamp will be different after finally dismissing jenkins after 3 pot arrests. Sorry for digression, what I meant to say is how I don’t understand this desire for covering a baseball team the way politicians were covered in the 50’s. We may have gone too far now but I’ll still take the balanced approach over knowing I will NEVER hear a discouraging word.

The only thing I will agree on is Roger’s actions were out of line, I just wish I know all of what happened because i’m guessing there is more to this story then a coach just going psychotic and attacking innocent children and fathers for no reason at all. We all should be responsible for our actions. Not just Roger.

Next time an announcer says a pitch was right down Peachtree at 90 miles an hour, make sure Lowe knows that about the ball … not his Porsche.

T for Texas – hilarious post! Only problem is, when someone gets released the same day/night they don’t go into general population.
