Love all the people making jokes and saying drinking and driving isn’t a big deal. Ask Nick Adenhart’s family how funny and how much of a non issue it is. As for McDowell, would anyone think it was a big deal if instead of denigrating homosexuals he called a guy with a black girlfriend a “n***** lover”? In both cases you are implying that there is something wrong with being in that particular relationship. McDowell should be fired and Lowe should be fined $500,000 that would be donated to a charity and suspended for two starts.

Some of you can “laugh it off” or make snide remarks about too much sensativity around here these days, but here are the facts –

If the reports are true (I emphasis “IF”) McDowell threatened and individual (a fan of the team, no less) with a leathal weapon in front of his kids, and many others as well. That’s assalt, by the way.

Now Lowe is accused of both driving wrecklessly, and under the influence – BOTH are serious charges which result in many deaths every year.

I don’t consider any of this a laughing matter, and hope both instances are delt with in an appropriate manner, once the facts are determined. At the very least, this is a big embarassment and poor PR for the organization. These are also distractions that the team doesn’t need. Any true Braves fan should be concerned for the team’s sake if not that of the individuals involved.

Yes, it goes without saying this is if what is being reported actually happened, but with multiple witnesses and McDowell issuing an apology (interestingly enough not from what he said, but simply for engaging the fans), I’d say it’s very likely what was reported was what happened.

2. You lose your license until the trial is over.

So, they can’t make you blow into a Breathalyzer, but they CAN forcibly take blood from you without a court order?

And then you’re punished BEFORE your trial?

A driver’s license is a privilege. It’s revocation is not a punishment. If you don’t abide by the EULA (i.e., that you will take a breathalyzer if you are stopped), the privilege can be revoked without an act of law.

Darn distractions from what should be a good series…

The Cardinals lead the NL in run scoring, while the Braves lead the NL in run prevention. St. Louis leads the NL in run differential. Despite a .500 record, the Braves are 4th in the NL in that department.

The Braves are glad to be home, and their brutal April will soon be over. They have played 17 games on the road, more than any team in the NL, including the recent western swing. This series starts a stretch of 15 of 18 at home.

Although the Cardinals are smoking the baseball, this will be just their fourth game played this year against a team in the top half of the league in allowing runs. They are averaging over six runs in 10 games against teams in the bottom five of the NL in run prevention, and about 3.5 runs per in their 15 other games.

The Braves offense has paled in comparison, but, just like last April, a lot of their early opponents have good pitching and defense. 13 of their 26 games have been against the four teams ranked 2nd through 5th in the NL in run prevention.

My understanding about the way the law is written in GA is if you refuse a breath test, then you forfeit your license and must take a blood test at either the jail or at a hospital.

No court order needed.

I watched some of the Cardinals versus Houston game last night. The Cards seem to have a few issues with their bullpen. Despite a huge lead, they almost blew it for the second time in the series. Houston’s offense isn’t pitiful, but it’s not “all that” either.

If the Braves can bring what they were smoking in the last two games in San Diego, this should be an interesting series.

Other than 24 hours in jail there’s no super downside to someone like him with a DUI. No MLB suspension. Maybe he can’t go to Canada for games. Can’t drive the team bus. Can’t fly the plane. Even Allen Iverson had a driver (for his Lambo) when he got pulled in Buckhead. Can’t wait to see if the police report is as good as the one the AJC obtained on that Damon Evans case.

I really don’t think there’s much of a dark side (no Star Wars jokes, please). Lowe made a mistake. And I really think McDowell’s altercation is being taken out of context. It’s all in the past, and we need to learn from what happened and move on.

my thinking is that a license cannot be revoked without due process. If you ARE convicted of DUI, yes then I can see the revocation. But to say if you don’t contribute to the Police accumulation of evidence against you, you’ll automatically lose your license is absurd.

And to say if you don’t blow up this balloon, we’re taking you to jail, strapping you down and taking your blood to use as evidence against you is even more absurd.

Both of these guys (RM and DL) are old enough and astute enough to avoid problems like this.
Makes me wonder if RM wasn’t drinking pregame if the accusations are true.

I generally believe the fans should not engage the millionaires over the wall, on the field, on the court, in the parking lot and at the restaurant. These are not upstanding citizens as such, they are ballplayers.

Sure, don’t cuss in front of kids, but I have been doing that all my life. I even get to cuss in court when I am quoting cussing. And although this may be blaming the ‘victim’, I wonder what the heckling fans were saying and whether the ‘victim’ confronted them as well. Doubt it.

I’ll wager Gonzalez addresses both the McDowell and Lowe situations with players behind closed doors. First, don’t engage fans, no matter the provocation. Second, don’t drink and drive – or race – or else. In fact, don’t race sober, especially in a typically busy section of Atlanta. Go to a track.

I’m sure the Braves have all sorts of conduct or behavior clauses in contracts with their players. I think the players will be reminded of these clauses.

Most of us grow up at some point that I often joke otherwise about myself.
Now when I was young none of this might have made a difference to me either.
But times are tough and these guys are still being paid ridiculously above their worth.
Older fans see incidents like this and decide not to buy tickets anymore.
Even before these two incidents, the Ted had its two lowest games of attendance.
I’ll bet it gets worse for a number of reasons.

Brava that father just wanted some attention. Would you then take your son, stick him in front of a news conference for the world to see, and have your high price lawyer repeat the actions over and over? So it then could be replayed over and over. If you truely believed it would screw up your children. I personally loved where one of the girls read from a sheet a paper how much it disturbed her. Really?? It disturbed her so much she had to read it?

If he didnt like it and said he would never return to a game, then I would believe he was truely upset. He just wants some fame and maybe a quick buck.

While what Roger did was in poor taste its being blown out of proportion, starting with the father. Roger did nothing more than what is done on TV and Im not even talking about skinamax. CBS and Fox show worse than what Roger did. Like I said, it was in bad taste, but if anything has ever been blown out of proportion this was.

Perhaps this will get Derek Lowe off the field for a few games and we can actually win some games he would have started in. Guy has been bad for us lately. Seven Runs allowed in 9 innings pitched. Braves 0-2 in those games.

As for Roger…anti-gay slurs. Shouldn’t get in any trouble for them, but he probably will. Not really sure how its any different than what players/coaches normally say. The real problem isn’t what he said, but is that he said it to a fan. Shouldn’t be talking to fans during the game. Especially the other team’s fans.

A refusal to take a breathalyzer test in GA results in an automatic suspension 10 days after arrest. HOWEVER if you file a request for an administrative hearing like any good lawyer would then the administrative hearing is postponed until after you go to court on the DUI charge. It is therefor very important to hire an attorney before the ten days are up otherwise they can suspend your license even before trial. Yes your blood could be taken by court order but that is extremely rare. Plus since most DUIs occur after 11:00 pm it is even more challenging to find a judge to sign such an order before the test becomes moot. Remember the alcohol does not stay in your blood forever. Breathalyzers are unreliable so it is wise to refuse. The cops will tell you it is an automatic suspension however they neglect to tell you that if you file an intent to appeal within 10 days your license will not be automatically suspended.

Somebody sitting near me is eating their lunch and it smells like actual vomit. I believe it is some sort of pulled pork BBQ, but I think they let it sit out in the sun too long or something.

It has a slightly tangy undertone to it, with a heady, heavy, meat-that’s-half-digested body… and the slightest hint of mint.

Carol: Thanks for a good report! I do suggest that you check out the difference between “diffuse” and “defuse.” Those two words are confused frequently.

Both these incidents will fade into the past, as they should, but first the club has to make a point with both McDowell and Lowe that professionals, who are paid obscenely large amounts, must behave in a manner that is appropriate to their public and role model status. In both cases, it’s clear that no rational thought was taking place.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but…

Why don’t MLB teams take proactive steps to have hecklers ejected from the stadium? I really don’t understand the notion that buying a ticket allows you to say or do anything you want. If they were heckling McDowell before the game even started, they want down to the field for the express purpose of starting something. Then when something starts, they act all offended and surprised.

People who heckle athletes, knowing the athletes can’t respond or react, are the worst kind of cowards and losers.

Maybe a month ago, there were still questions about the back end of the Braves’ bullpen. But you can rest that case — because it’s now clear that manager Fredi Gonzalez gets to wave for the most unhittable closer in baseball. So how unhittable is Kimbrel? He has faced 35 hitters this year — and exactly four have gotten a hit, 10 fewer than he’s struck out.

But that’s nothing new. This guy has piled up more than four times as many punchouts in his brief career (54) as he’s allowed hits (13). And the only other closer in history who has even had a two-whiffs-per-hit career ratio is Carlos Marmol (515 K’s, 242 H’s). So this is ridiculous. “He’s the closest thing to a right-handed Billy Wagner that we’ll ever see,” one scout said.

I posted this on the last blog but thought it was a good article som Im reposting it.

It was snowing Wednesday night in Minneapolis. It was snowing, and we’re supposed to lament that Target Field was only half-filled with hardy Minnesotans?

We’re supposed to lament that Mariners fans are setting record-low attendance numbers for Safeco Field, even though the Mariners are coming off a 100-loss season and the weather has been unseasonably cool and cloudy — even for Seattle — with just one sunny day in April?

We’re supposed to lament that the biggest drop in attendance has come at Dodger Stadium — a place that has been reliably filled for nearly 50 years — even though the team’s ownership situation has turned into a national punchline?

And yet, here we go again. The pictures of empty seats. The grim obituaries. The heartache for a sport that writers have been trying to kill off since the turn of the century — and by that I mean the turn into the 20th century.

Jeff Passan, Yahoo’s excellent national baseball writer, wrote a long examination on baseball’s early-season attendance woes. Currently, through 357 games, attendance is down 589 tickets per game compared to the same time period last year. Passan was quite level-headed, albeit with a few apocalyptic lines thrown in.

Attendance might be down, but that is not necessarily alarming, not with the cold and wet weather that engulfed the Northeast and upper Midwest through much of the month. It was 32 degrees in Wrigley last week; is there any wonder there were plenty of empty seats? And true, attendance in 2010 was 73.1 million, down from the game’s record high of 79.5 million set in 2007.

Since that high in ’07, the big decrease in attendance happened, but not now, and not even last year. It happened in 2009, which coincided with two big phenomena: the downturn in the economy, and the introduction of new, smaller stadiums in New York, because the Yankees and Mets alone accounted for 30 percent of the attendance drop from 2008 to 2009.

Yet the hand-wringing continues, usually without mention of facts such as the following:

NFL attendance has fallen each season since 2007 as well.

The NFL had 22 blackouts in 2009, more than 2007 and 2008 combined, and in 2010, that total was surpassed in Week 15 of the season.

Movie ticket sales were 1.32 billion in 2010, down from 1.4 billion in 2007, which was down from 1.58 billion in 2002.

DVD sales shrunk 13 percent in 2009 from 2008 and another 16 percent in 2010.

Ticket sales for the top 50 North American concert tours fell 15 percent in 2010 from 2009.

NBA attendance was actually up about 160 fans per game this season, yet the sport has so many economically troubled franchises that a labor war appears imminent this offseason.

In other words, it’s the economy, stupid. Families everywhere have cut their entertainment spending. It’s a tough market, whether you’re selling baseball tickets or U2 tickets. And it’s especially tough selling baseball tickets in April.

But baseball is always the sport that is dying, the sport kids no longer care about, the sport that needs help. This is an argument I never understand, considering I always see many more kids at major league games than NFL or NBA games.

It’s easy to bash baseball, because that’s our real national pastime. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell even took veiled shots in a Wall Street Journal editorial this week about the NFL labor situation. (For a good rebuttal to Goodell’s column, check out ESPN.com contributor Patrick Hruby’s piece at The Atlantic.) Goodell’s central premise is that the NFL’s salary cap and limits on player movement have fostered league competitiveness and popularity — you know, unlike baseball.

This premise ignores one simple fact: In the past 10 years, MLB has seen nine different World Series champions and 14 different World Series participants. Four of those champions came from outside the top 10 in payroll. In contrast, during the past 10 years, the NFL, under its carefully constructed system, has seen seven different Super Bowl champions and 14 different Super Bowl participants.

In fact, it’s exactly that kind competitive balance that has kept baseball so popular and allowed it to reach record revenues in 2010. And many of the teams that are currently struggling at the gate have been proven supporters in the recent past. Baltimore, Seattle and Cleveland, for example, currently rank 10th, 11th and 14th in the American League in average attendance, but all three franchises have led the AL in attendance at some point since 1998.

The “baseball is dying” attendance stories usually ignore the positive stories going on. Passan points out that the Padres cut their ticket prices and attendance is up, while the Brewers, playing in the majors’ smallest market, have drawn at least 2.7 million fans each of the past four seasons. The Phillies were 14th in the National League in attendance as recently as 2002, but they are currently packing it in at more than 45,000 per game, while the Giants have drawn at least 3 million fans nine of the previous 11 seasons (including 2010) and are on a record pace this year.

Then again, those stories of attendance success aren’t as much fun to show compared to a bunch of empty seats.

Whats the big deal with 13 guns? We know he likes to hunt. 13 is about average for most hunters. You cant use the same gun for all game. Plus you usually want two or three guns for just one specie depending on if you are hunting off a pasture or in woods or brush or off water.

Harry completely agreed. Why is it athletes are not allowed to say a thing offensive to fans but fans are allowed to say/do anything they want? It is ridiculous. Fans say the players are adults and should know better, but the fans 99% of the time are adults too. Guess thats why I will usually defend players/coaches anytime their is an altercation with a fan in the stands. Lowe’s actions are much more serious than McDowell’s and by a player, no less, a veteran player and number one starter. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one to a drunk driver knows how serious dui is. If he would 1) drive while impaired; 2) race another driver down Peachtree; 3) not admit there is a problem here—there is a problem here. Over 50% of people who get caught DUI have done it multiple times and are, at best, problem drinkers in need of intervention.
Lowe’s health and his recovery are much more important than his next start or how the Braves do without him.

Carroll sorry but have to ask is in the company line or excuse why gomez will not be brought up- defensive problem? worse than conrad? i paid for milbtv and watched and admit i only have watched last two games, i didnt see any problems for gomez at first–in fact made some nice plays– especially on a squibbler off the bat with a marek pitching ( no one in iternational legue is putting any good swings on him- what’s the excuse on him being in the minors?)- that was a difficult play– and he played it well. I thought maybe the guy is slow but ran down the line well on a ground out last night– and also scored easily wed night on a grounder to left from second- but looks like he has average or better speed. Is there a reason they are not trying to kid in the oufield? is he that bad? Worse than hinske?

I agree. Especially if Minor/Teharan/Medlen are ready to step into the rotation, and nothing bad happens to the others. And if such a clause does exist, it gives the team more leverage in a trade situation. What remains to be seen is if his antics drop his value any on the market. As you say, if he continues to pitch well, that would help everything.

There is a distinct difference between what McDowell did and the father/lawyer describing the events. Its called stating the facts.

No “stating” is saying it, reporting it. Not redoing it.
If you were offended that you kids were shown some pornographic video by somebody, would you make them sit at a table and play it again in front of them? Is that what stating it is or is that for the benefit of the still cameras?

folks can choose whether they respond to those feelings, but they do not chose to have those feelings
they can also choose whether they want to make those feelings public or not, but the feelings are still there.
Why should they not have the right to acknowledge and act on those feelings just like heteros can?

DOB, I know that you and the AJC staff are hesitant to delete posts and block IP addresses, but in my opinion something should be done to get the focus back on baseball. This is a Braves/Music/BBQ blog, and probably 90+% come here to read and post because they want to discuss Atlanta Braves baseball.

For the past two days, half of the posts (probably from as few as 20 IPs) have been nothing but calling someone else an idiot, a bigot, a racist, a bible thumper, a queer, a sinner, stupid, tolerant, intolerant, free-thinking, or narrow-minded.

I’m done for a while with this site. If I was interested in political, religious, and social debates, I wouldn’t spend my time on a baseball blog.

Guess I’ll just read box scores for a few days. As Ward says, peace…

Snot, in my manual there is a big difference between simulated porn and the porn. IMO, the bat demo was done for the still cameras and the video was probably meant to be shut off prior to that happening.

Gloria won’t just sue Roger. She will sue Liberty Media and the Atlanta Braves. They put Roger on the field and are responsible for him as employee on the clock. Even though he is self employed through contract, he was representing the Tomohawkin bad boys of Atlanta. Just wait. If the Braves fire Roger they will be admitting he was wrong so they will strike a deal with Allred not to sue if they fire him.

Well, he hasn’t been convicted of anything yet. A lot of bogus DUI charges are made. This could just be another one. He’s innocent until he’s proven guilty, so no big news here.

Oh, and just listening to the recollection of events, its very possible a lawyer gets the DUI thrown out for DLowe and it just stands as a reckless driving charge….

As long as there isn’t brought up later the “don’t you know who I am” speech…doesn’t seem like a DLowe thing, but you never know…

Leumas………dude, no one “chooses” to be gay. Do you really think that a man wakes up one day and says to himself, “hum, this female thing isnt working out for me….I think I’ll trying having sex with a man and see how that works out for me”? If you really think that, then you are OUT OF YOUR FREAKING MIND, LOL!

No man chooses to be gay. I dont care how bad it goes with women…we will keep going from one bad relationship to another with a woman…..NOT venture into homosexuality. It doesnt work that way.

All my gay male friends have all said over the years that they knew they was gay from the time they were little kids (many of them grew up in religious households). In other words, they were born gay….no one “converted” them to homosexuality.

Another thing, I have gay male friends who have adopted children. If anything, they would MUCH RATHER that their kids be straight, because they dont want their kids to face the kind of discrimination that they themselves have faced. Gay parents do not try and raise their kids to be gay, lol!

Even in San Francisco, the VAST majority of children raised by straight couples are straight…even though homosexuality is not vilified here. The reason why San Francisco has a significant gay population is because many gay adults move here from other areas of the country that are homophobic…..not because they grew up gay in San Francisco.

I would personally ask for a fan to be removed if all he could do was sit there and yell profanities. I’m not talking about an occassional expletive. If they wouldn’t move the fan, then I would ask them to find me another seat somewhere. If they wouldn’t do that I would ask for my money back and leave. I have been to several games and on occassion sat by a few drunks but have never had problem with people yelling profanities, I’m sure some of you may have. I’m sure it’s a common occurence in many cities. The day I have to make a decision between attending games or subjecting my family to foul language and bad manners is the day I stop attending. You can’t sensor life, but you don’t have to pay to get a 4 letter education. At some point owners will probably have to choose between more fans or freedom of expression. More than any other sport baseball is more of a family event. I hope we can keep it that way.

Jeff321…The last time I looked, still photos are done without movement. The subjects freeze so the pics will not blurr. Why are they moving the bat back an forth throught the “strike zone” if the pics are stills. There is not doubt that this video was to be released in some manner by the parties involved.

Its not hard to figure out when you see them look in another direction, hear cameras flashing, and the video suddenly ends.

Keep digging. I dont know what video you watched, but the stuff doesnt stop till the father uncomfortably semi-retracts his hand. And they “stated it” for a whole 30 secs of it on video. No sudden end or anything. Get a clue.
