Chopin, the deal is this: When McDowell is wearing a MLB uniform in a MLB park and the park is full of fans who paid a lot of dough to park, enter, eat, etc., McDowell is not allowed — by his employers — to make obscene gestures at said fans, threaten said fans (if he did), etc.
Dumb stuff that you CAN do on your own dime, you CAN NOT do as a representative of your employers and their professional organization.
Good morning all
Another loss, this team cannot seem to hold a lead in a close game. It is very upsetting that they cannot get above .500 ball. 13-13 record after finishing a tough road trip and playing good ball at the end of it, then they come home with a big crowd at the Ted and they disapoint once again.
Well said Muddy Waters. That is the case in a nutshell and why Roger is in very hot water. He was on the clock representing not only the Braves (a very conservative & PR conscious team) but also the MLB league.
Finely he is part of team leadership not a player. Older mgrs don’t get as much leash in these situations. Some 28-30yo rich star ball player can shoot off his mouth and get fined b/c he is hard to replace (if good).
A pitching coach that embarrasses a team won’t get the same leash Ozzie G in Chicago notwithstanding
He insulted a demographic versus tossing a ball at a drunk fan and he did it in front of a family with two little girls in tow. PR nightmare for Selig and MLB.
If he doesn’t get fired it will be b/c the guy lied his butt off and gets caught.
Right now Roger McDowell fans better hope the guy stretched the truth b/c if he didn’t Roger is gone.
If it is proven what he said to the young kids, he has given up his right to be on the field as a professional representative of the Atlanta Braves. Fire him and fire him immediately! He hasn’t done much with the pitching crew anyway – won’t be much of a loss.
The problem is Gloria Allred. Having her involved in this case doe not bode well for McDowell because that b@tch is determined to win every case put before her even if it’s totally retarded like this one. I just want to meet the dude McDowell said this too and tell him to STFU and deal with it. Cursing and threats are everywhere in sports no matter which one you are at. Hell in Europe obscene gestures are traded between fans and players during Soccer matches. America is way too up tight about what we say and what we do. I stand behind Roger and would have done they exact same thing because more than likely those people who are harassing were interfering with Rodger’s ability to do his job which is what he gets paid to do…..right?
to everyone that says McDowell should go because the Braves are a classy organization, etc. Remember, our prized manager Bobby Cox got in some trouble with the law for beating his wife in the mid 90s
The story that Quinn is claiming is not being backed by others that were in the stands. They claim Quinn was instigating the situation, and they never saw any kind of threat by McDowell. Though they did verify McDowell’s initial comments to the 3 hecklers…. they described it as a back and forth and everyone in the section was laughing, including the original hecklers. This was during batting practice, and McDowell was hitting fly balls from CF to players standing in RF. It was very relaxed… there was some back and forth going on with the fans… McDowell clearly wasn’t thinking about the repercussions of his “juvenile” comments. But everyone had moved on, then Mr. Quinn got involved and proceeded to make it an ugly situation. Demanding to know what McDowell meant by his sexually loaded comments and actions. He asked McDowell to repeat the comments because his Daughters did not understand them He said McDowell should not talk like that with kids around. (which he is correct… in fact the comments should not be made no matter who is around). McDowell wondered why Quinn didn’t speak up when the hecklers were talking smack. He didn’t say “kids should not be at freaking baseball games”, clearly a statement that Allred and Quinn are using to stir up controversy. (How dare McDowelll say children do no belong at our AMERICAN PASTIME!)
McDowell’s comments were juvenile… but sadly it is something guys do. Guys bust other guys balls all the time with gay references. It’s not right, and it’s incredibly stupid to do it in a public forum…. but it’s very common in male dominated fields, or with groups of guy friends. It’s really not done out of hate… it’s like saying a guy acts like a chick. But I understand that inherently it is not a healthy practice. And at the age of 56 McDowell should realize that.
Keep in mind that the hecklers were not gay… and if he thought they were, he probably would have not made the comments. I am assuming that because he was not angry with the hecklers… he was heckling back in his own way.
Quinn also claims he felt threatened by McDowell. He claims McDowell walked towards him with a bat and he felt threatened. I have season tix at AT&T Park… that is an 8 foot wall… Quinn is looking down at McDowell… there is no way McDowell is getting to Quinn. How threatened could he feel?I
The other SF fans are claiming Quinn kept barking at McDowell and Quinn’s wife told him to leave it alone. In which Quinn replied, don’t worry it’s not like McDowell is going to come into the stands. Definitely doesn’t sound like the traumatized victim he and his lawyer Gloria Allred is claiming him to be.
McDowell screwed up… what happens to him he can only blame on himself. But I do not think that Quinn… who initially contacted ESPN with this story before getting a lawyer… should be awarded in any way. He is an opportunist…. a guy that says he is protecting his children… but has no problem with putting them in front of cameras while watching Gloria Allred reenact anal sex with their Dad, and a baseball bat.
The guy is looking for 15-minutes of fame, or a payoff!
Thank God for Gloria Allred if she did not represent the everyday guy NO ONE WOULD LISTEN. If Mcdowell said these horrible words he should be ashamed of himself and be FIRED.Braves org. and the MBA should not condone this behavior.
