McDowell’s comments (if true) are reprehensible, and if true he probably needs to go. However, one wonders why even if they are true, someone who was merely heckled needs to retain a “celebrity lawyer.”
April 29th, 20113:39 pm
The gay slur was bad enough – but “Kids don’t [expletive] belong at the baseball park.”? That’s bad policy, bad business, and strikes at the heart of what makes baseball great. How do you keep paying fans coming if you don’t win the hearts and minds of the kids?
Roger, you never could carry Leo Mazzone’s jockstrap. This may not be enough to get you fired – but I’d sure love to see Leo back in the dugout and you gone.
April 29th, 20113:40 pm
If that “fan” really cared about protecting his kids he has a funny way of showing it. If you want to keep your family out of the media eye the last thing you do is call stupid Gloria Alred…
Reid in EAV
April 29th, 20113:41 pm
Given Gloria Allred’s involvement, I remain incredibly doubtful about most of the “facts” as relayed by her, particularly the comment about kids. It just doesn’t seem like something he would have said, even in the heat of the moment.
April 29th, 20113:42 pm
its hard to believe he did this just for the fact that the comments are out of this world. who says that kinda stuff. “how much are your teeth worth”, WHAT?? WHO SAYS THAT. and who would say children dont belong at a ballgame. everyone knows that a baseball game is a great family environment. just some bogus comments made, if true!

Reprehensible comments by McDowell? Yes, if accurate. Should he receive some type of punishment? Probably in the form of senstivity training (which is what Allred requested), a fine and maybe a suspension. Termination? I think that is a little harsh.
I also want to know what type of legal action Mr. Quinn is contemplating bringing against McDowell. Perhaps a criminal action for harassment and/or making terroristic threats. However, unless there are some specific statute in California, I don’t see how he has either a recongnizable civil cause of action or, even if he did,any recoverable damages.

terrible way to act, what does he mean kids dont belong to the stadium, its an american padttime, its catered to kids and families, what a moron, but still this is the ifrst time i have ever heard anything negative from McDowell, fine him, suspend him, but give him a second chance, no one in this country should have hir or her bread taken away over a one time offense, if it happens again then yes fire himm, but please give him the chance to prove himself and put this behind him.

Some of the allegations may be true, but there is no way that McDowell said this. Give me a break.

Surely McDowell has told them what he did, or did not do. If he did not do anything, then he should not be placed on administrative leave for PR sakes as that is unfair to him.

I think it is time to get rid of McDowell. I never liked him and I think he has ruined alot of good young pitchers. Bring back leo….
April 29th, 20115:20 pm
Im glad that so many on this blog were not there and yet know exactly what was said and what was not said– gesture made gestures not made– i dont know about all of you but i have had people say that i said something and it wasn’t even close to what was said for right now until allthe facts are in witnesses interviewed everythging is heresay one guys word against roger– so give it a rest those calling for drastic action without the facts i still thought that your innocent until proven guilty – he may have responded to some heckling fans- but how do any of us know what the lawyer is saying may not be exxagerated and may not be absolutely accurate– so until then unless you were there and saw and hear yourself please withold judgemtn and discipline
April 29th, 20115:26 pm
His comment about the couple or threesome was bad enough. But what he said about kids at the ballpark is terrible. He shoukd be fired!!!!
April 29th, 20115:35 pm
It seems that there are two camps on tis blog:
Those offended by McDowell’s action and want to see him disciplined or fired fr that, and
Those that want to see him fired because they don’t like him as a pitcing coach and/or venrate St. Leo.
Asto the first group, the picture of what exactly happened in SF will become clearer in a few days, and the appropriate action based on the facts will occur.
As for the second grup — Exactly what young pitchers did McDowell ruin? How has Leo done as a pitching coach since leaving the Braves? His credentials were polished having the likes of Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Avery, Nagle, and Millwood to coach, but his strength seemed to be rehabilitating old pitchers not working with the young ones. The Braves rotation and bullpen will be flled with young arms within the next couple of years who will probably work better with a younger pitching coach than Leo. Whatever the truth about his personal behavior, Roger McDowell has been a pretty effective pitching coach as the staff numbers over the last two years have indicated.
this is getting ridiculous what good young pitchers has mcdowell ruined- hanson, kimbrel, venters, beachy, gearrin jj????????????????????????– please people at least make accurate statements fire him he has ruined our whole pitching staff – how more idiotic can the statements be— he has runded our young pichers– give me a break
April 29th, 20115:37 pm
the whole “First” thing is dumb. Stop with those stupid comments. I know McDowell said something to the fans, but I don’t think it was as bad as what this guy described. And as offensive as that sex act he did with the bat, this celeb lawyer was sure to demonstrate it in front of the guy’s little kids. So, uh so much for not wanting your kids to see that.
April 29th, 20115:44 pm
Rid the organization of losers like McDowell & Lowe, and in the long run, the organization will be better for it.
April 29th, 20115:48 pm
No way he said kids dont belong at the park. That part was completely made up by the loser dad.
April 29th, 20115:49 pm
I posted in the other thread that I didn’t think Roger would survive this mess. This is the beginning of the end – get Leo ready!
April 29th, 20115:50 pm
No way they bring Leo back. Mcdowell will be fined and he will be back next week.
April 29th, 20115:53 pm
I’m not supporting McDowell in any way, as you have to take the higher ground given the position that you are in, but these same people that are calling for McDowell to be fired, I wonder if they’re the same people that give money to their church each week as their preacher puts homosexuals on blast. Roger is no preacher, but do you scream for your preacher to stand down?
April 29th, 20115:54 pm
I’m pretty sure, when all the facts are in, both sides will come out looking immature. That video is ridiculous. What are those parents thinking? And why would a coach that has been around the game as long as McDowell make such ignorant and threatening remarks to fans? I’ve seen fans removed from stadiums for excessive abusive behavior toward players on many occasions. I have been a Braves fan since the mid 1960″s. I hope much of what the fan says is not true, but if it is, Coach McDowell should receive a suspension, a fine, sensitivity training, perform a little public service, and go back to work coaching the Braves pitchers. I see a lot of gay, San Francisco, Nancy Pelosi, liberal bashing from Braves fans on this and other sites. It seems wrong to blame San Francisco for rude fans… rude fans are everywhere. Gay people are abundant in San Francisco, but for Coach McDowell to respond the way he was reported to have responded shows either a homophobic problem or a 7th grade mentality. I am not gay or from San Francisco, but I do resent the insinuation that this was somehow caused by liberals. If what he is said to have done was actually done, blaming the fans as taunters and liberals is foolish. McDowell is wrong regardless what was said to him. His only correct responses could have been, as I and every other successful elementary school teacher remind students daily, is to walk away or get security to solve the problem. He is a professional and an adult, he should act like one. Hopefully he did not do all he is accused of doing. Those parents are fools for having those gilrs involved in that news conference. That could be construed as child abuse.
The fans on this blog have expressed their opinion about the effect a hitting coach can have on his batters when discussing TP. If the effect of a coach is that critical, then changing pitching coaches in mid season could be damaging. McDowell has worked with this staff for six years and knows the adjustments that need to be made from start-to-start for each pitcher. McDowell received credit for helping Lowe rediscover his sinker during his troubles last summer. A new coach will have to learn about all of the individuals on the staff before he can be most helpful in making the game-to-game corrections. If McDowell is guilty as charged of most of the things he is acused of saying he will have to be dismissed, but the transition to a new coach may not be seamless.
April 29th, 20116:20 pm
Reading between the lines, it seems the Braves leadership is not thinking the accuser’s story is the whole truth! Saying that there are witnesses “who corroborate [McDowell's] side of the story,” while also saying they have no plans to interview the accuser cements that!
Adding in the rather pointed “he had a press conference,” also indicated what the Braves think about the accuser’s motivations!
Looks like Roger did the right thing and confessed the truth and he’ll get a few days off for his troubles and need to meet the Braves’ and MLB’s requirements to return to work.
April 29th, 20116:24 pm
Fire McDowell and Gonzalez. I refuse to go to see another game with this hater there and his supporter the manager. Neither of them should be able to stay in the game.
April 29th, 20116:26 pm
This is a bad thing for McDowell to do however. celebrity lawyer? Come on. He was irritated becuase you were heckling him. Because he responded like he did does not mean this man won the darned lottery. I bet McDowell gets sued. He shouldn’t. If so he should get counter sued for provocation. If Mac was a bad man this would not be the first time. Get over it.

i support McDowell 100%. Get some thicker skin. I go to about 40 games a year and if you are there early you know there is a lot of back and forth between players and fans. This dad is a loser looking for some pub and probably a little payout.
Lose his JOB over a homosexual slur? Puh-lease. Give me a break. Political correctness has gotten way out of control in this country.
the Braves should fire McDowell and hire Elton John as pitching coach.
Or is he a catching coach?

Let’s say a prayer for Lowe and McDowell and hope they survuve this mess and become better for it.
April 29th, 20116:36 pm
survive I say
April 29th, 20116:38 pm
In today’s politically correct world, McDowell crossed the line – I can’t see any way that he survives this deal – it is sad, but it’s true and he will be demoted or released before the end of the weekend. The team can’t take the hit with what he did – unfortunately, Lowe will pay the fine, go to the class and all will be well – the public looks at that stuff differently. I’m not saying one is right or one is wrong – they both let the city down – but the social implications have already convicted Roger and he won’t be able to survive.
Too bad we can’t fire you. What a totally assinine comment!!!
BIOMASS I watched some of the royal wedding this morning and saw two queens there–Elizabeth and Elton.
Who Sues For Things Like This?
April 29th, 20116:39 pm
What kind of low-life goes from the ballpark to a celebrity attorney’s office in this situation? Whatever offense the little 9-year old twins may have gleaned from this incident, it pales in comparison to the egomaniacal overreaction of their father. Although McDowell may have erred, Quinn is a buffoon and his children are being used as pawns.
April 29th, 20116:42 pm
The Braves have stood out as a classy organization for years. Players are delighted to come to this club – it shows character and respect for all. McDowell has no place here. He acted ignorantly and because he decided to throw intelligence and decorum out the window to prove how cool he was, he hopefully has uttered his last meangingless words (apology statement) as a Brave and lost his job as a result. Good! We don’t want his kind representing this fine organization. And all you cowardly bigots out there responding with your classless statements supportng him need to follow. Good riddance. Leo, where are you?
April 29th, 20116:44 pm
“Are you a homo couple or a threesome?” Reprehensible? Give me a break! I hear much worse crap being spewed on these posts most often. Grow a pair. He was being heckled. He heckled back. You politically correct folks need to get a grip. It wasn’t profanity which I hear at the ballpark all the time. “Wah! He hurt my feelings. He should be fired.” Pathetic!
April 29th, 20116:46 pm
Every body hates homos.. Who gives a damn what he says about them?
April 29th, 20116:47 pm
RTW: Nothing politically correct about this. It was stupid.
April 29th, 20116:49 pm
Whoa, hold on here people. According to this article, there are witnesses who corroborate McDowell’s version of the events and nobody but nobody has posted HIS version.
It’s my belief that Roger was put on “leave” for no other reason but to get him out of the limelight for acouple of days until the team finishes their own investigation.
Right now all we hear is the allegations made by the family and their media ***** lawyer.
Let’s all give him the benefit of a doubt and see where this goes. The guy has been here for 5+ seasons now and to my knowledge he hasn’t been a problem before.
LET’S NOT RUSH TO JUDGEMENT HERE!!!!!!

Tired of the Drama
Good to see all the homosexuals in the audience weighing in on this subject. None of them has probably ever seen a baseball game, couldn’t find Turner Field if given the chance, and wouldn’t know Roger McDowell from Roger Rabbit.
But no, they see the word “homosexual” in a headline and jump on for the ride.
Show some of the tolerance you demand of others. Questioning whether a group of heckling fans are homosexual IN SAN FRANCISCO is simply not offensive to the majority of Americans. Your predictable conniptions, however, are quite offensive.
April 29th, 20116:51 pm
McDowell should receive the same treatment as those fans got. Send him back to San Francisco and let them mock him for being a flaming heterosexual.
April 29th, 20116:52 pm
I say let Roger and this offended day have a duel and settle their differences. Baseballs at 75 feet. Just wondering if this dad lets his children watch R rated movies with all the language. sex and violence. If so, case dismissed. Another thing how many times have you seen comedians and other actors make comments about gays and then say not that there is anything wrong with it. If they didn’t think anything was wrong with it they wouldn’t think what they said was funny. One more thing= How many times have you heard someone being called a redneck? This is a derogatary racial slur and should not be tolerated by the society that is so eager to defend gays. Just because some dufus comedians use this term doesn’t make it right. That is the same as some low class rappers using the N word and thinking it only pertains to them and no one else can say it. Both are wrong and should have to fight a duel until their tongues fall off. Now attack.
April 29th, 20116:53 pm
This man was not protecting his kids. He should have been talking to them to avoid them noticing anything. Wouldn’t you. My kids would not have known what was going on. Not to excuse the coach if he said these things. He is teaching his kids to go for the money with Gloria Allred. He should not get anything for dragging his kids into something not good for them. I hope he gets to pay top lawyer fees with no reimbursement. Gloria must be hurting for publicity.
April 29th, 20116:55 pm
Could it be that McDowell said children dont belong near the bullpen? This would seem a little more realistic, and it may indeed be true given the language I have heard from so called fans abusing opposition pitchers. And from here I wonder whether he said “how much are your seats” rather than how much for your teeth…..how much for your teeth does not really sound like a typical threat, at least not one I have heard before.
April 29th, 20116:56 pm
Kids don’t belong at the ballpark? Say What? That is the most dumbest thing Roger said.
April 29th, 20116:57 pm
What is a S. Redouet? Another word for I like men (providing you are a man) and if not you might like Ellen Degeneret. Lighten up. you sound like a dumacrat.
April 29th, 20116:58 pm
why did he apologize if he did not say those things? CAN WE SAY GUILTY? Today’s society does not deserve this verbal abuse and sexual harassment. Those kids especially do not need to be treated without respect. And who is he to say that kids do not belong at the ball park? Can the sucker is all I have to say and yes I am gay.
and I wonder if “pulling a Quinny” might become part of everyday language for cry baby like behaviour…..
April 29th, 20117:03 pm
To those asking why Roger issued the apology: clearly *something* happened. Pros should not even acknowledge hecklers — that’s where the line is drawn. But it seems pretty clear that Roger is telling a different story about what happened and there are enough witnesses to back him up. I’d bet my tickets for this Sunday that there is no way he said kids don’t belong at the ballpark.
The mad hungarian
April 29th, 20117:06 pm
To Jere, let’s not confuse the issue calling for Leo Mazzone’s return. You ever think it is not a coincidence that no MLB team has bothered to hire Leo after he was fired from Baltimore? He has practically campaigned for a job for the past several years.
April 29th, 20117:07 pm
daveinnepa what article ?
If he said these things he should go. And for Fredi to say McDowell should keep his job, but will probably have to “jump through some hoops” is almost as bad. Jumping through hoops means doing ridiculous, meaningless tasks. McDowell obviously has a deep problem and needs to do more than jump through hoops. I’m pretty disgusted with both of them.
April 29th, 20117:08 pm
If McDowell did this, that’s unfortunate and should be addressed. The plaintiff in the case, however, is certainly giving off all the signals of being a shallow publicity-seeker. Retaining a showboat attorney in the name of protecting your kids? Disingenuous. If he’s concerned about his kids, then take them home or take them aside, explain what was offensive and why. But don’t make a media circus out of it for your own hoped-for enrichment.
April 29th, 20117:09 pm
My guess is that Mr. Ouinn was amused at the heckling the gays were laying on Roger and wanted to join in till Roger reacted.
April 29th, 20117:16 pm
Agree with Ed@6:33 and RLM. The dad and Gloria recreated the scene at the press conference that was so offensive to his daughters right in front of them as they snickered.
April 29th, 20117:17 pm
I think all you idiots out therre who want mcdowell gone are stupid. He made a mistake and he will pay for it, but he will keep hi job.YOU IDIOT MORONS
April 29th, 20117:18 pm
dan, your flamboyance is evident.
Mr. Quinn, a student/motocross show radio host, according to the L.A.Time and S.F. Chronicle tried to pitch this story to ESPN before he hooked up with Gloria Allred and staged his press conference. If all he says is true, McDowell needs to clean up his act, but not be fired. Methinks Mr. Quinn is a publicity hound, which means he’s not innocent as the driving snow, either. My guess is he sees a chance to “monetize” his “trauma.”
He should be suspended without pay without question. He also needs to meet with the folks he offended and apologize to them and explain his actions. His job would depend on their response. And, he would get no second chances because his behavior is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated
April 29th, 20117:19 pm
Couple of points here !! So called Primo attorney simulates a sex act with a baseball bat in the presence of the 9 year old twins, one who seems to laugh at the press conference !! Also, everyone Google the attorney and see who she has represented
My question is, what has been going on with Roger? Maybe he has some personal issues and some stress we don’t know about. Not to offer an excuse, just a thought. I also wonder if perhaps he was under the influence of something (hope not!). I just happen to believe there is something underneath the surface we don’t know about.
Go to Breitbarttv.com and watch the village idiot and his lawyer simulate anal sex with a baseball bat with his children in the room and watching the performance.
Say Goodbye Roger!
April 29th, 20117:21 pm
Sorry folks this guy has to go, first Rocker who was off his rocker then this, the Braves apparently have a bigger problem somewhere that is just now coming to the surface. When this guy puts on his Braves jersey he becomes a public figure and responsible for what he says. The Braves fire him Gloria Allred’s concerns about the Braves are addressed and then she does whatever she wants with Roger. It’s time for the Braves to step up and start acting as professionals and not idiots!
Gonzalez needs to make some apologies, too.
“In my opinion it shouldn’t,” Gonzalez said. “I’m sure there’s going to be some hoops that he’s going to have to go through and some apologizing, which he should have to go through, but for a person to lose their job, I wouldn’t think so and I hope it doesn’t.”
OK i MAY BE WRONG BUT..
I was at the game 10 feet from Roger in the bullpen watching Jair throw his bullpen. I never heard Roger say what is being reported. It was really loud and the Giants fans were brutal and drunk hippies making themselves look like fools.
I NEVER , NEVER SAW ROGER WALK TOWARDS ANYONE WITH A FUNGO AND SAY ANYTHING ABOUT TEETH OR THREATEN ANYONE.
I WAS THERE FOR ALMOST 50 MINUTES WATCHIGN THE BULLPEN. MY SEATS WERE NEXT TO THE BULLPEN FRONT ROW. ROGER EVEN GAVE A YOUNG BOY A BALL.
I NEVER SAW ANYTHING. I WAS THERE.
April 29th, 20117:22 pm
If he did not do what has been alleged, and other witnesses back him up, then he should be coaching today. Shame on the Braves for leaving him dangling as it sends the wrong message.
Even more confusing is why Fredi would say he hopes McDowell keeps his job if he did nothing wrong?
Assuming he returns to the team, he and the team are likely to see increased heckling by some people trying to get a rise out of somebody.
Innocent till Proven Guilty

FIRE HIS ASS, no one should judge anyone. God knows, he will do so in the end. If all this god stuff is true there are a lot of gay people who just landed on this planet by accident to invade all you homophobes. Being straight I have many gay friends, two daddy parents as friends. Whom have they harmed? They bible addresses this in Sodom and Gomorrah. The only sin was unkindness because LOT let the travelers in. Not a damn thing to do with being gay. JEEEEEEEEEZ
April 29th, 20117:33 pm
Jeff people are judged everyday. Get over it.
April 29th, 20117:34 pm
While I obviously look down upon Rogers actions, I feel he is getting punished way more severely than any player would had they done the same thing. Since Roger is easily replaceable, they have no problem with letting him go. Why was Kobe not facing a leave after his gay slur?
Roger was not putting anyone’s life at risk while Lowe’s speed racing, drunk driving fiasco WAS an endangerment to the public and greatly overlooked. McDowell should of realized that he is expected to act differently being in a professional setting, but I still find it unfair to see him get so severely punished when millions of gay slurs go unnoticed each day and kobe gets a slap on the wrist
April 29th, 20117:35 pm
IF…he said those things, then he’s pretty stupid and should have known better. What isn’t hard to believe is that bloodsucker Gloria Allred is getting her ugly mug in front of a camera. She lives for this kind of thing. She’s the queen of political correctness.

April 29th, 20117:37 pm
Chris Sacramento you missed the point totally. As my dad would say your ignorance is showing.
April 29th, 20117:41 pm
Thank God McDowell didn’t call them “A bundh of Christians.” That would have been the most reprehensible thing he could have called them in SF.
April 29th, 20117:51 pm
@NickP…Aren’t you being a little hypocritical there calling someone a moron.when you said ‘This is not the same old USA where anyone different can be bashed and embarassed because you see them as different.” I guess that applies only until someone doesn’t agree with your politically correct point of view then it’s open season on them to call them whatever you like..
April 29th, 20117:57 pm
In my opinion they are all a bunch of scum bags. McDowell for saying and doing that. The Dad for letting Gloria Allred show that thing with a bat, and Gloria Allred for being the bottom feeding, scum sucking media wh**e she is.
April 29th, 20118:04 pm
i’m offended by gloria allred simulating sex with a ballbat and a man. who can i get to represent me at my news conference? didn’t they commit child endangerment? shouldn’t they have changed ends on the bat? they clearly didn’t know what they were doing.
April 29th, 20118:10 pm
Oh yeah I meant to say that thing with the bat in front of his kids. Isn’t there a law against that???
