The Braves met with pitching coach Roger McDowell on Thursday in the wake of allegations that he used anti-gay slurs and gestures in an argument with fans at San Francisco’s AT&T Park last Saturday. They are not expected to announce a decision on potential punishment until Friday morning.
The Braves were off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Cardinals at Turner Field on Friday.
McDowell issued an apology on Wednesday, saying “I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions.”
Giants fan Justin Quinn, 33 of Fresno, Calif., accused McDowell of yelling “Are you a homo couple or a threesome?” to fans sitting in the left field seats and simulating a sex act with a bat.
Quinn, who was sitting nearby with his 9-year-old twin daughters, said he asked McDowell to watch his language in front of children.
Celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, who is representing Quinn, said McDowell responded by saying “Kids don’t [expletive] belong at the baseball park.”
She also said McDowell walked toward him in a threatening manner, holding a bat. Quinn said McDowell asked him “How much are your teeth worth?”
Quinn, 33, demanded an apology at a press conference held Wednesday in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters.
Allred said Thursday she’s been contacted by another baseball fan who said he was verbally abused by McDowell at a game last season. Allred declined to name the fan or specify the ballpark, saying only it was a father with young children.
“It was an anger issue and it also involved young children,” said Allred. “The concern is it may not be an isolated (incident).”
She intends to notify Commissioner Bud Selig with the details.
Selig called Quinn’s allegations “very troubling” and said in a statement Wednesday evening he would determine how to proceed after the Braves complete their investigation and report to him.
The Braves expressed their concern about the allegations in a statement Wednesday “and the behavior described by a witness today. This in no way represents the Braves organization and the conduct we expect of our employees. We will withhold further comments until we finish gathering information.”
This is McDowell’s sixth season as the Braves’ pitching coach.
Among those to rush to McDowell’s defense in the fall-out Thursday was Jerry Pritikin, 74, a long-time Cubs fan, who used to interact with McDowell from the bleachers at Wrigley Field in the 1980s when McDowell was a pitcher for the Mets. Pritikin also happens to be gay.
“Being openly gay, I understand why some people would be disturbed, as I was,” Pritikin said. “But he made an apology and I accept that.”
Pritikin said he got to know McDowell personally during exchanges back and forth from the bleachers. The two used to throw Frisbee.
“He’s been such a good guy,” Pritikin said. “He always had fun with people in the bleachers, no matter what ballpark he was in, but because Chicago had such a great bleacher crowd, they really looked forward to him coming whenever he came to town. He was truly a great entertainer.”
Pritikin voiced his support of McDowell in an e-mail to Selig Thursday. He’d written Selig in recent years after anti-gay comments by former Cub Julian Tavarez and former Brave John Rocker, but those e-mails were much more critical, he said.
“I could understand someone who would not have known of Roger’s career or his antics at the ballpark might consider, ‘Well this is another hot-headed person,’” Pritikin said. “The other two guys were definitely prejudiced in what they were saying. I don’t believe Roger is that kind of guy.”

I’m going to go ahead and play TV lawyer here. But how does asking someone “How much are your teeth worth?” constitute a threat? Second of all what was said to McDowell? I seriously doubt Roger woke up that morning. Are players and coaches supposed to just sit there and be berated? What if someone stood over your shoulder at work yelling at you all day, how long could you put up with it?

Carl – it really does not matter what the fan said. Roger is the professional representing the braves organization. He is the one getting paid and wether you are an player or a coach – you should be professional and not ingage fans like that – especially in front of kids. If I own the Braves I’d understand that I can directly control what fans say – but I can control how my players and coaches behave.
Ave, Roger does not get to hire a lawyer – so freakin what ? what does that have to do with it
Questiton – how would you feel if you were in the stands with your children and heard the professional coach’s words to the fans

Yes, it sounds bad, and it is NEVER a good idea for a professional to respond to a heckler in any way, shape or form, even just to say “hey, shut up.”
But keep in mind that we are hearing only one side of the story here. I have had the misfortune to be in a legal altercation years ago, and the things alleged that I did were, at best, wild exaggerations of the truth, and many things were 100% false. And that was just with a run-of-the-mill ambulance-chasing bloodsucker. This is Gloria Flippin’ Allred we’re talking about, a grandstanding camera hog, drama queen and backstabber of the first degree. While I think it’s likely Roger responded to some heckling fans, I don’t believe a bloody thing in the complaint until I get some corroborating evidence. And that’s the bottom line.

I think everyone deserves a second chance…(unless he’s already had one and we don’t know about it) but he needs to be suspended for a period of time and he needs to meet face to face with the folks he offended and apologize to them personally. Fans heckle opposing players and coaches and even when they are out of line, it comes with the turf. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Let’s face it, McDowell was way out of line and to say that kids don’t belong at a ballpark is, well, just plain stupid. If he survives this incident it can never ever happen again…ever.

A devout fan of the ATL braves I went to Washington for Bobby’s 2500th win last year in september.. If everyone remembers, that series was directly after the Philly series in which we were swept and the NL East was gone. I get the the Nats game early, and head to the pen. I was talking with Kimbrel, and complimenting Johnny Venters on his gutsy pitching, when Roger came out from the bullpen, and said loudly, “WE DONT NEED YOUR SH**” I replied yall needs someones SH** or we are going to lose the wild card to me. He immedilty said go back to your seat A**hole we still dont need your SH**..
To make a long story short, if I was wearing a braves jersey, hat and coat, and he cussed me, wonder what he says to a heckler from another city… He has anger issues, and from that moment own I have referred to him as Roger McDUESHEBAG. and to whoever said, “who cares what some idiot in the stands said”
people in the stands are going to say awful thing all the time, as a professional player or coach, it’s part of your job (that you’re well compensated for) to tune them out and go about your day.
The impetus is on the coach or player to act maturely and stadium security to deal with raucous fans. If someone was saying awful things at McDowell, then it’s on him to inform security to deal with the matter, not deal with it himself. It’s called professionalism, Roger and you represented the Braves organization poorly. Don’t let the door hit ya, where the good lord split ya

I watched and heard McDowell do a similiar thing at Nationals park in May of last season. I sat next to the Braves’ bullpen while Tim Hudson warmed up. Some kid yelled something at Hudson (which I did not hear), and McDowell told the kid to send his mother to his hotel room later on. Yes, he needs to shut his mouth. And yes, MLB needs to do something about the behavior of fans who can sit there all night dropping f-bombs on the left fielder (who was Matty D that night).

Remember the good old days when everyone was afraid of some “Big Brother”-type government coming to power? Well, don’t look now, but when people are losing their careers and being penalized over dumb, off-the-cuff remarks, it sounds an awful lot like thought-policing to me. Ask (former) Miss California if she believes we still have the freedom to believe and say what we truly feel (even in good taste and in response to a direct question, as she did) in America today. It’s scary, folks.
I have to say I am disappointed in Mr. Bradley’s remark about the Braves’s PR being threatened by keeping a “homophobe” on their payroll. It’s easy to make an “opinionated” statement that caters to the mainstream (politically correct); what Mr. Bradley said was as much about placating those in power in our nation as it was about denouncing the actions of Roger McDowell.
And let’s just be frank; the term “homophobe” is a misnomer at best that’s being used by the liberal political machine through the media to make people of conviction feel isolated and out-numbered. The truth is it’s not homosexuals themselves that most of us are afraid of; it’s the idea of someone living a lifestyle we believe is inherently amoral and against the teachings of God’s Word using the media and the State to force an acceptance and approval of that lifestyle on us (both in our families and even our churches) via overwhelming propoganda and social and economic pressure and persecution, denying us the right to believe as we feel convicted to and to teach our children what we believe. We fear what America is becoming: a nation where right has become wrong and wrong has become right in the eyes of people, where innocence is ridiculed and discouraged and character is secondary to money and power in importance. And most of all we fear what will happen when God turns His back on our country; it will rain both on the just and the unjust when that happens.
Even the famous atheist Voltaire made the statement, “I may not agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Looks like the liberal crowd has lost a lot of credibility when they won’t even let anyone hold a belief or make a statement contrary to their own, doesn’t it? Let folks do and believe as they will; we all have to face the same Judge someday anyway.

Number one, he never should have responded to any heckling by any fan. He’s a professional. It’s his job to ignore it. The game would never get played if every person on the field responded to things being said from the sidelines.
(Can you imagine if the umpires bothered to respond to hecklers?)
Number two, as long as you have jerks like McDowell who can’t see past their own noses to realize that some people *might* be different than they are, you’re never going to have a society where gay athletes will feel comfortable. And that’s not right.

@UGSSlobberknocker,
Agreed on your points about McDowell’s behavior. If he did say those things and act that reprehensibly, he deserves disciplinary action, maybe even being fired. But it never ceases to amaze me how quickly the media and liberal watchdogs glom onto a solitary word or phrase to try to spin it into a political issue. If what McDowell said makes him a “homophobe” then I guess pretty much everyone in America has been guilty of hating somebody at one time or another. We need to get real and cut out this thought-policing crap.
Hope the Braves deal with this quickly, objectively, and professionally and move on.

There is a different stadard of justice coaches vs multi million dollar players, coaches are expendable but players have the union. So Rodger will probably be fired where if the same thing had happened to Prince Fielder he would be given a $5,000. fine and suspended for two games and that would be the end of it.

The Chronicle isn’t even paying attention to this. And to all the posters on here upset about one f-word, you are amazingly naive as to the language used in the dugout and clubhouse. Do you think your beloved Bobby got tossed all those games without the aid of colorful language? It’s a part of clubhouse culture and sports in general; you can’t clean it up with one un-warranted firing or wish it away with all the holier-than-thou morality judgments in the world.

Ok here goes, I’ll be the bad guy on this blog for all you libs SF types. Roger over-reacted to the the heckling by those fans. Especially the father with his daughter, that is the only thing that bothers me. If I had been that dad, the 2-3 gay guys sitting near me and my daughter who were acting up would have been my first concern. Probably would have told them to shut up. Seems like a double standard to me, if gays are berated or hassled they file complaints and wine about it, but if the gays are hassling someone that seems to be okay with society. Buying a ticket only allows you to go so far with your conduct towards others. Everyone knows that SF is the gay capital of the world but that does not give them special rights to hassle anyone just because they are not the same as them. Before you start to call me names, I do not bother anyone that is gay nor do I expect someone who is gay to bother me! The hecklers should have been tossed out of the stadium if it was that offensive and Roger should not have vented towards the dad and his daughter!!

Every place I’ve worked has had it in the manual that if a customer was verbally abusing and/or berating you, you could respond verbally in any way you see fit so long as it wasn’t against the law. So while that means you can’t threaten customers, you *can* tear them a new one verbally without repercussions.

I wasn’t there so I wouldn’t know to what degree Roger McDowell “threatened” the family with the bat. Obviously if he so much as gestured with it then it was a very, very stupid move on his part, but it is entirely possible that the family is grossly exaggerating what occurred.
Compare this incident with one where Ty Cobb ran up into the stands and began beating a disabled WWI vet who’d been heckling him bloody. When another fan cried out that the man had no arms, Cobb responded (and I’m paraphrasing as it’s been a long time since I read this) “Then he should have kept his mouth shut!” From what I’ve read it is apparent Cobb had no love for people of color either. Of course Ty Cobb is now in the Hall of Fame and his statue sits in front of Turner Field. MLB has always had a double standard regarding its players and how much character counts in being inducted into the HOF. Compared to Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, and Roger McDowell, Ty Cobb was in a class by himself. If MLB can look past his transgressions, then it definitely should theirs as well.

Real quick, let’s say you wait tables for a living and a customer is being difficult. I’m sure there are a lot of things that you want to say to that person, but don’t out of respect for the fact that you need to maintain your job.
Surely, your personal prejudices would come to mind, but you keep them to yourself. You can’t act that way in ANY field. People love to blame “political correctness” when they’re not able to spit whatever bile comes to their mind whenever they want.
Face it, in ANY field of work, if an employee acted that way towards customers they would lose their job immediately. That’s not “political correctness” that’s a company doing what it needs to to preserve it’s business.
Let’s say you owned a contracting company and your company was doing work on a gay person’s home, would you appreciate your EMPLOYEE using gay slurs to the customer because he was being picky about something? NO! You would lose THAT business and probably a lot of business in the area due to bad word of mouth. People can say whatever they want, it’s a free country, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be FREE-MARKET consequences to those actions… i.e. losing business.

So, I’ll be walking around John’s Creek tonight yelling gay slurs, racial slurs and all obscenities that come to mind because my first amendment rights say it’s OK… I’m sure that the cops will obviously see it the same way.

Why do people find it necessary to compare professional athletes or coaches to regular “9 to 5″ jobs? By saying things like “No HR manual says…” or by saying “How would you like people standing over your shoulder sreaming at you all day at work…” you are drawing a false parellel.
The fact is that these jobs are unique. They get paid handsomely to put up with stuff that you or I do not, or should not have to deal with. That being said, they can also feel the need to snap back or saying something equally as atrocious as what has been said to them.
My question is why did the father of these girls feel it necessary to start an altercation with McDowell? It sounds like Roger was talking to another group of people and this guy chimed in. then Roger may or may not have said something to the man. Now the guy feels that he needs to take his entire family down to LA to have a prepared press conference with Gloria Allred? Did I miss something here?
The quip or joke to the group of guys about the “Gay couple or threesome” was not all that bad, but if he actually threatened someone (and they have multiple people, or evidence to back it up) OR if he actually said the ridiculous line of “kinds don’t belong at the bleepin baseball park”, then he should be fired.
I am going to go out on a limb and say that, at the very least, the “kids dont belong…” comment is fabricated because the exact quote the guy gave included the words “baseball park”, which if you have ever been around anyone that cares about baseball you know that you never use the words “baseball park”, you just say “ballpark”. It is kind of like how homeplate is always called “the plate” or “homeplate”, not “home base”.
I think that line was fabricated by the father or Allred because they knew that would strike a cord with everyone as an idiotic statement that would definitely be the wrong message for the Braves or MLB to have to stand behind. That is just my opinion.
If it is ALL true, then HE GONE! If not, then this family is shameful and an example of everything wrong with todays lawsuit-obsessed society.

Frankly, I was willing to agree that this went down the way the SF fan claimed it did — right up to the moment when I saw the photo of his whole family at a table with Gloria Allred with them!
Right then, I smelled a rat!
Allred is a sleaze lawyer who gives lawyers a bad name. For this fan within 48 hours, or less, of the action, already having a photo taken with the whole family and Allred at a big table, that tells me this fan is someone who knows what buttons to press to cash in on an issue. And Allred’s history is one of a lawyer who is perfectly willing to cook up accusations that simply are not true!
McDowell may well have yelled back junk to a couple of fans who themselves were hurling invectives. That’s nothing new. But the real issue is the honesty of the report that McDowell actually held a bat in a threatening manner as he asked a fan “how much [his] teeth are worth!”
Without Allred’s presence I may have given the fan’s statement credence. With Allred’s presence so quickly after the incident, I have serious doubts as to the fan’s integrity.

@Matt,
Simmer down, man. It’s pretty clear that McDowell acted very inappropriately and said things he should be disciplined for. I agree with you that the First Amendment (for the most part) only protects free speech when said speech is appropriate and non-endangering to other parties.
My point about political correctness was in regard to the wholesale destruction of anyone and their career who makes even an offhand remark that offends certain segments of our society. Doesn’t matter that they may be behaving like jerks within the context of the event or whether, like happened to (former) Miss California, they’re simply answering a direct question in an honest and non-threatening manner; the results are the same branding as a bigot and societal persecution by a tenacious, liberally slanted media.
Roger McDowell behaved like a jerk and his behavior reflects poorly on the Braves organization; fine. If the Braves discipline or fire him, they’re within their rights to do so. But dogpiling on McDowell or anyone else specifically because they happen to utter a non-PC word or two during their remarks is quite simply thought-policing and against the principles America was founded upon.

However, a player/coach should know better. If he was trying to conduct a private conversation and was being heckled (it comes with the job) he should have just ignored the guy. Many wrongs and few rights here. If McDowell actually threatened the man with the bat and asked about his teeth then he should be fired. That puts his employer, the Atlanta Braves, in a poor light. All he had to do was be be the big man and walk away. Instead he chose to escalate a bad situation. If someone was being arrogant or abusive contact security and walk away.
Also, the Quinns need a lesson in how to act also. All they had to was contact security if McDowell did indeed threaten them. Aligning with a celeb lawyer certainly doesn’t give them credibility.

Roger should not have risen to the bait, but just because a SF lawyer trots some kids in front of a camera, does not confirm that McDowell threatened their daddy with a baseball bat. Selig, who winked at steroid use a few years ago when McGwire and Bonds were filling the stands, will hang McDowell over the perception of wrongdoing.

Do you fans really believe the version of this incident given by the SF types without hearing Roger’s side of the story. That is so one-sided of you! I still think the dad with the daughter should have confronted the homos(my 1st amendment right to say) and told them to shut up or called security. Don’t think Roger(or anyone else) who has worked in baseball 30-40 years should lose his job over a few misplaced words. Now threatening someone with a bat would be a different story, if true. But I doubt a professional athlete or coach would have to use a weapon to deal with some sissy in the stands!

And the coach was holding the bat in a threating manner when he asked what the dad’s teeth were worth…it wasn’t just an innocent random question. What a horrible ballpark experience for his kids!

I’m gay and I don’t think the alleged gay slurs were not that big of a deal except for where it took place. If I were one of the fans, I would have said, “yep, we’re a homo couple and you seemed to enjoy it last night!”. All in the spirit of back and forth heckling. I see two much larger issues in this exchange. If McDowell did ask how much the father’s teeth were worth while holding a bat, that is a bigger issue. The other is saying kids don’t f’n belong at the stadium, in front of kids. Punishment for the slur should just be a fine and a couple weeks suspension. The other two issues could be worthy of termination.

For the poster who wanted to know why McDowell would have a bat: obviously, he was down there before the game to watch his starting pitcher warm up. So, there should be some witnesses: starting pitcher, catcher who warmed him up, and probably Eddie Perez.
McDowell would have had a bat because often during warmups, he stands there acting as a batter simulating a batter in the box. What in the heck is “hectoring” as the man claimed McDowell was doing to the 3 gentlemen?

@joop,
The world will be what we make the effort to make it become. A world where kids can’t hold onto their innocence for at least awhile shouldn’t have to be a fantasy. While yes, we are adults, we owe it to set certain examples for our kids; it’s our responsibility before God to do so as parents and as elders. I personally remember a time when neighbors looked out for each other and total strangers would wave as you walked by; that’s not a fantasy world, it’s one I remember fondly and feel sad every time I think back on. For all we’ve gained technologically we’ve sure lost a whole lot in other equally tangible areas.

If McDowell threatened them or made a sexual gesture, that’s totally wrong. But, if the “anti-gay slur” is the word “homo”, why should that be a big deal? Isn’t it the first part of the word “homosexual”…!?!?!? If we can’t say “homo” without being labeled a bigot, why should any American be allowed to say “homosexual” without being condemned to death (or public flogging, at a minimum….)….!?!?!? Look people you may not agree with other people’s personal choices but you don’t mock them publicly. Kids on the playground is one thing but adults is completely different. Making remarks like that and simulating sex acts with a bat??? Really?? Provoked or not it was completely uneccessary. You know what would’ve been a better way to retaliate?? Tell the nearest security guard to escort them out of the park.
Teach your kids right from wrong??? Take your kids to a Marilyn Manson concert and deal with the consequences. You don’t take your kids to a ballgame to hear other adults act like high school kids who think it’s fun and cool to cuss. Yelling profanity at any sporting event will get you kicked out.
The fact that McDowell has already apologized and didn’t even fight it tells me he is guilty. I can assure you I would want an apology as well and season tickets for life wouldn’t hurt either!!! I do agree that an attorney is rathe excessive.

“A California man accused McDowell of yelling “Are you a homo couple or a threesome?” to fans sitting in the left field seats and simulating a sex act with a bat.”
So this dumbas* father is trying to force an apology from McDowell? How about telling the “fans sitting in the left field seats and SIMULATING A SEX ACT WITH A BAT” to grow up, have some class, quit drinking, and stop acting like a bunch of perverts when there are children and other fans around????? THAT is the crux of the issue!
The fact is that these fans were acting obscene, perverted, offensive, and crass…. THEY are the ones at fault, not Roger. God only knows what they were saying… what if they’d been heckling him and his family for 3 straight hours? Roger can’t fire a couple of comments back their way?
That’s the problem with America and a bunch of panty-waist, bleeding-heart liberals… we are SO concerned to not offend a small segment of society with a comment here or there, but general decency and things that offend the MAJORITY of decent, moral people are just ignored.
I would have done exactly what Roger did, and I hope he does it again if those bat-sex clowns do something like that. Good for him. Maybe the butt-wipe fans who are simulating sex with a baseball bat will grow up and have somebody get in their face and teach them some DECENCY and some MANNERS and some CLASS.
God help our society.

I’m beginning to wonder just how much of this story has been construed out of context. If those fans were indeed up there in the stands doing lewd gestures with the bat and McDowell made his remark angrily at them, and then the dad misunderstood what McDowell meant when he supposedly said “Kids don’t belong at the ballpark” (for instance, what if McDowell meant or even said that that ATMOSPHERE was no place for kids), then obviously it changes the picture quite a bit. Roger McDowell was still wrong to get into an argument with fans and should be fired if he physically threatened anyone with a bat, but the fact is we may never know the full and exact truth about what transpired there.
Oh, and “Larry”, it’s “extremus” (there’s a good reason I don’t give my real name on a forum like this). And I’m straight, I’m a Christian, and proud of those facts and the right to say so, even if anonymously.

Mike at 12:27 — no, I stand by my comments. If the dad was SO concerned about language and behavior at the stadium, he sound have immediately found ushers and security when the perverts were making sex act simulation with a bat. THAT is MUCH more offensive than a few curse words.
Again, the action by Roger (his comments) came ONLY after the initial obscene behavior by the fans. If they had kept their mouths shut, Roger would have not had the need to comment. Yes, it’s bad what he said about the kids, etc., but he was probably hot and fed up with the pervert fans.
So if the ORIGINAL problem had been addressed, there would be no confrontation. The idiot pervert fans heckling a pitching coach are the ones to blame.

And by the way, baseball fans at EVERY stadium are guilty of horribly offensive behavior. People look at it as a chance to get drunk, high, and cuss out the opposing team, fan, and coaches at every opportunity. Fans behavior these days has become obscene and offensive to the point where I would SERIOUSLY think before taking a kids to a game.
Let’s not let fans off the hook and only blame the athletes and coaches. Remember the NBA fight in Detroit was egged on by fans… some baseball stadium brawls have involved fans… and soccer riot problems are almost always fans, it’s not the TEAMS that get into a fight.
Until people start being more responsible and living up to a higher standard of behavior and decency, these problems will continue.

Have any of you read the Jim Bouton book, _Ball_Four_? Back in the 60s/70s, this sort of thing was commonplace. I remember a story where his manager or teammate shouted to a woman in the stands, “Hey Blondie, how’s the old tomato?” The book related all the crudeness that goes on when you have a group of overpaid testosterone driven guys together. The availability of drugs, women, anything they want… I’m no prude and believe what happens in the clubhouse should stay there. However, in the litigious society in which we live, a player or coach is just asking for trouble responding to fans with slurs and cuss words. I don’t doubt that someone caught the entire exchange on their cellphone camera. If so, McDowell is history.

My how much has changed in the United States in nearly 100 years.
How mean was Ty Cobb? On May 15, 1912, the Tigers were in New York to play the Yankees. A fan named Claude Lueker, who had lost one hand and three fingers on the other in a printing press accident, was heckling Cobb. The two traded insults for a couple of innings. After one exchange, teammate Sam Crawford asked Cobb if he was going to take that. Cobb charged into the grandstand and proceeded to beat and stomp Lueker. When somebody said he has no hands, Cobb shouted, “I don’t care if he has no feet.”

I saw this comment on an article at the SF Chronicle. If it’s true, it certainly helps Roger’s case.
“I was there and was about 2 people away from this guy with the complaint. He was actually the one being the instigator. It all started with McDowell and David Ross being heckled by 3 guys in the bleachers because they wouldn’t throw batting practice balls into the stands. McDowell had a bat with him and was hitting the BP balls back to the infield. McDowell then turned to them and asked if they were a “gay couple” or a “threesome”. He then took the bat and made stroking motions with it and thrusting his hips and he asked the 3 hecklers if that was what they were going to do to each other later that night. Everybody in the stands were laughing. Then a few minutes later, this Quinn guy yells “hey coach, my kids want to know what that means”. Then he was saying that McDowell shouldn’t be doing that stuff in front of kids. Then Quinn yelled out “come over here and say it to me”. That is when McDowell started walking over to the wall. Quinn’s family then started to pull at him and told him to stop. Quinn then turned to his wife and said “what’s he going to do? come up here?”. Then McDowell was telling him that if he didn’t want his kids hearing stuff like that hen he should have said something to the 3 hecklers that started the whole thing. Quinn just kept going on and calling McDowell a “joke” because he should know better. McDowell told Quinn that he should tell the 3 hecklers to not say anything if he was so offended and Quinn said back “where are they?” as if he never even heard the heckling himself which would be outrageous since everyone in the bleachers heard the hecklers. Not once did Quinn look like he feared of getting harmed since he was the one that called McDowell over to him plus the fact that Quinn was in the bleachers and at least 5 ft higher than McDowell. Quinn instigated the whole thing.
Yes, McDowell was wrong doing that stuff but this guy Quinn is crying wolf about being a victim when he instigated the whole confrontation. And getting Allred to represent him and calling a press conference is a complete joke.”

This is a rediculous and sad incident that reflects so very poorly on such a top notch and WELL RESPECTED organization like our Atlanta Braves. Remember, these San Fran Giants players & fans are the same ones who stopped their own National League Playoff clinching celebration last Fall to show respect and honor Bobby Cox’s final game as a manager. That ranks up there in my mind as one of the classiest gestures I have ever seen from an opposing team. I want the players and fans of this league to continue to look up to the Braves as the “best of the best” organization in baseball. If the internal investigation prooves what Roger is being alleged to have said and done, we can’t let this action slide with a simple suspension. Roger has to be shown the door.

If any of the incident happened I’d fire him. Most of us interact in a world where we encounter folks who are different from us. I go to GSU and see guys holding hands, kissing all the time. And, plain ole decorum says I don’t go up to ‘em and joke or slur about it. And also, McD isn’t just joe-employee or even a player. What he is is a mentor to young men, some not even old enough to rent a car. If he were a college coach, similar ages of players, and he did that he’d be gone in a flash. And that, either part of this story, is not an example I’d want my organization to set for the young men he mentors. If he were that offended, or the gentlemen were that obnoxious, he should have hopped on the phone to security. Why? Because it’s not his job to police fan behavior. No it wasn’t appropriate for those gentlemen to simulate a sex act with a bat around anyone, let alone two girls, but no one expects, tacitly or otherwise, those two to mentor on behalf of an organization. Ergo, there is a different standard of behavior. McD is an adult who plies his trade at a darn nice salary in a city which has a broad spectrum from all walks of life, ergo he should be expected to comport himself professionally when he isn’t in private. And, if he doesn’t like it, then find another JOB. Is there a professional among us, DOB or Caroll Rodgers included, who can look us in the face and say that they love absolutely everything about their job? We can go round and round about did Quinn overreact or are those gay men in the wrong for simulating a sex act in public. But it wasn’t McD’s job to police fan behavior. But there are folks who get paid to do that so he should have let them handle it. He should have walked away, people in metropolitan areas do things all the time that might not be appropriate to do around minors and if he feels that strongly about some of it, he should go crusade against it – on his own time, when a separate organization which doesn’t expressly share his goals pays him, at least in part, to mentor young men.
For that reason, he should be let go.

nemov: You are right, we must get the facts first. However, McDowell must have done something to warrant his initial apology. The bigger issues are whether or not he 1) threatened the dad; and 2) whether he made the comment using the f-bomb about kids not being at a ballpark. The other thing that seems terribly wrong is the “press conference” with Allred and the family – among other things, why would the parents allow their nine year olds to be subjected to that?

Have the parents of this family let their children watch a R rated movie with violence and foul language? If so, then case dismissed. They are being two-faced if they can tolerate it on tv or movies and not in real life. If Roger said (and I mean if) that kids don’t belong at the ballpark then he should be reprimanded and have to buy tickets for let’s say 1000 kids to a home game. There is no such thing as a gay slur so that part is also dismissed. Any man allowing another man to violate his mouth or rear end with his private part is just plain perverted. Anyone objecting to this is just plain perverted and people will see you for what you are.

Whether Roger was provoked or not, he does have a responsibility as a coach for the Atlanta Braves — one of the class organizations in all of MLB — to hold his tongue and conduct properly, maturely and responsibly at all times. He has the right, even in another team’s ballpark, to call on Security if he feels threatened by the classless & drunk catcalling fans in the stands to have them dealt with.
Roger may actually not lose his job, this time. He’ll likely be fined, required to issue a public apology direct to the family that felt that they were offended — whether it’s justified or not (you know, PR spin). But in order to remain a coach in the Braves organization, he’ll be carefully monitored. I don’t think he gets a 3rd chance.

If these allegations are true, I don’t know any way that he can keep his job. That being said, lets wait to see exactly what information comes out from the current investigation before we condemn this guy.
Also, regarding possible replacements, I’ve only skimmed through the other posts but I don’t believe anyone has mentioned who I believe to be the most logical candidate, who is already under the Braves employ. That man being Thomas Michael Glavine.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment on the blog. It was a poor reaction that he will be fined and/or suspended for, rightfully or not. Personally, I think it is stupid that is is such a big deal. Language? Unfortunately, kids are going to hear it no matter what. I guarantee the kids have already heard the words either uttered by a parent, on a movie, or even seen a player say it on TV during the game. It isn’t hard to read lips when players drop F-bombs all the time.
I have heard way worse stuff than that hurled at Braves players in our own stadium than what Roger said. For instance, to quote a Phillies fan yelling at Frenchie back in 2007, “Your wife’s a good f**k, you f**king f*gg*ot”. That was the first time that I saw a player react to something a fan said. At which point, Francoeur yells back “I’ll come up there and kick your ass.” According to some people, Francoeur should be ashamed of himself and is classless by making a “threat” on the fans that were heckling him (We did get those Philly fans kicked out, because they started threatening to throw their bats (Brian McCann bat day) at Francoeur. Give me a break, I don’t care what Roger said… as long as he didn’t them or try to hit them. I side with the players/coaches. They can dish it, but they can’t take it.

A question, why would this dad choose to say something to Roger(Braves coach) and not say something to the tainting gays sitting near him. Did the gay guys language not offend his daughters or is it just that all SF folks(straight & gay) stick together! A picture of the dad on the internet looked to be about 160 lbs and on the passive side. Don’t think Roger would have needed a tooth-pick much less a bat to settle that discussion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m going to wait for all the facts to come out but, at the very least, he should be suspended and fined. I’m not sure if I would fire him over an isolated incident since there aren’t, to my knowledge, other grievances against him. What about this situation people don’t understand? He is not only an employee of the Braves but he’s in a managerial position. He is supposed to set an example for the 20-something year old pitchers he has in the pen not be the lead douche. Any type of conduct that embarrasses the company is grounds for disciplinary action, including termination.

First, the man and his family were not the ones heckling McDowell. Three other fans did the heckling. McDowell responded to those first three fans with inappropriate words and gestures. The father did not heckle McDowell; he told him to watch his language in front of his daughters. Just about any father (including myself) would do the same. Then McDowell said kids don’t belong at baseball parks (Huh? Didn’t just about all of us begin to love baseball when our parents took us to games as kids?). McDowell then walked towards the father and threatened him with the bat, asking him how much his teeth were worth, which was an explicit threat that he was going to smash the father in the face with the bat. This is a criminal offense under any circumstances in any jurisdiction in America (the threat, not just the action). If these allegations prove to be true (and contrary to what some posters think, eyewitness testimony does qualify as evidence), then McDowell must be fired.
The gay slur and gestures were certainly inappropriate but would probably warrant no more than a suspension on their own. Saying nasty things about families and in front of them is grounds for firing and would be at any business in America. Threatening to smash a man’s teeth out with a baseball bat is a criminal offense and would normally lead to an arrest and probation. Who the father’s attorney is is irrelevant.
For those questioning the issue of free speech, you need to take a course on the constitution. The constitution protects citizens from the government controlling their rights to speak freely. It does not apply to private entities and the guidelines they set for the employees who represent them. The right to free speech means that the government cannot take action against citizens or organizations for criticizing the government or disseminating their opinions. Private corporations can and do expect their employees to conduct themselves to a certain standard, which is perfectly legal. Please learn about your American government before trying to use false patriotism to actually undermine the freedoms that the constitution gives us, one of which is terminating an employee who threatens customers and curses in front of children.
Finally, a few people have suggested that McDowell was justified because their beliefs condemn homosexuality. They are right that in their in their holy book it lists that sexual practice as an abomination. It also lists eating pork, eating shellfish, and wearing different patterns together as abominations of the same order. To those people I ask: Have you ever eaten bacon, a ham sandwich, or had a hot dog at the ballpark? Have you tried shrimp cocktail or crab dip? Have you ever worn solid color pants with a striped or plaid shirt? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions then you have committed a sin that is equivalent to homosexuality according to your book. On the other hand, that same book gives suggestions on how slavery should be properly conducted. In this case I would have to ask, “Who is the one with the moral deficit?” And it’s certainly not the family at the ballpark.

If Roger did this it is obviously unprofessional–from a business perspective. However those of u who think that it dosen’t matter what the fans say or do are living in a fantasy world. This world has begun to take the posture that regarless of any action taken by the non working individual are insignificant and all responsibility lies with the “professional”.
Well the problem with that is it allows people who are not “at work” to be irresponsible and instigating.
Teachers, Cops, Firemen, Garbage Men, Accountants, Reporters and everyone else have jobs to do but doing them shuld not put them at the mercy of those they serve.
Being at work is not a determining factor of whether or not u owe a person respect.
Although heckeling is part of sports had the fans kept their mouths shut in the first place there would have no confrontation.
Then you have this idiot who needs an attorney b/c he was cussed at.

Judging by our attendance the last few years, you haven’t been going anyway. This was just your opportunity to whine and complain.
Fact of the matter is – we don’t know what was said to Roger and we likely never will. Gloria Allred is an ambulance chasing attorney and it’s likely that Roger didn’t even say what was claimed to be said.
For those of you who do attend games – ask yourself this question before you judge: How many times have you EVER seen a bat in a pitching coach’s hand? It’s just not part of their standard equipment.

To Ben at 12:54 — you said “No it wasn’t appropriate for those gentlemen to simulate a sex act with a bat around anyone, let alone two girls, but no one expects, tacitly or otherwise, those two to mentor on behalf of an organization.”
Your sentence should have stopped with “No it wasn’t appropriate for those gentleman to simulate a sex act with a bat around anyone.” PERIOD. End of story. THOSE are the guys responsible for this huge mess. And I’m ashamed that some decent, moral San Francisco fan didn’t stand up in front of those guys, get in their face and say “Listen you jagoffs, this is not a frat party or a porn convention for a bedroom. For God’s sake, there are children around. Take your drunken, perverted butts out of this stadium before I call security to throw your ases out. Now sit down and shut up and act like a decent human being for cryin’ out loud.”
If somebody had the NUTS to do THAT, Ben — meaning that if somebody in the public had the nads to stand up for a STANDARD OF DECENT AND ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR, then messes like this could be averted.
Don’t stand behind the “Well, stuff goes on all the time, there’s nothing you can do about it” argument. WRONG. There ARE things you can do — it just takes guts, courage, and the willingness to be ridiculed for not being PC.
Stand up for your values, people. If everyone did that, we’d see where we all stand, and I think we’d be surprised as to how many people actually DO believe in upstanding, decent, moral behavior. But very few people have the courage to stand AGAINST those who practice immature, unacceptable, perverse behavior, both in language and deeds.

Roger always walks around with a bat during batting practice. I see almost every game and he can be seen talking to fans, giving autographs no matter what the team colors the fans are wearing. Amazing how a fan in San Francisco has a news conference in LA. 15 minutes of fame.

I think that it is time that fans as well as the coaches and players are held accountable for their actions and words. It is time that pro sports stops requiring the coaches and players to be held to a higher level than they do the fans. Oh I know the fans pay to get in but that is no reason to allow their rudeness or vulgarity. Throw the bums out and ban them from future sports activities for a period of time (i.e. like a suspension). If it is good enough for those who are playing the game then it is good enough for those who see the game.

There are witnesses to say Quinn started his dialogue with Roger. Frankly, if the original 3 hecklers didn’t take offense (and probably laughed it off), the whole “gay slur” thing should go away. Second, if Quinn’s kids wanted to know what those gestures meant, he should be man enough to tell them it was none of their business or explain in an appropriate manner.
San Francisco is one of my favorite cities – have been 5 or 6 times and even spent part of my honeymoon in San Fran. But in the last few years, the attitude of people out there is really disturbing.

Is MdDowell a grown man acting like a 16 year old kid or just a moron? Or both? Kid’s don’t belong at the ballpark???? This Quinn might be playing this for the wrong reason but a real man (McDowell) would have let it go. A representative of the Braves organization heckling back at the hecklers? Are you kidding me? What happened to due process? Let the league and Braves investigate. These are allegations, and if true then McDowell should be punished for his actions. I think its poor judgement on McDowell part to get suckered into a confrontation with fans because fans heckle all the time and its part of the game. To say kids are not to be at a game is illogical and stupid. Even if gays were at the game, they are supporting McDowell’s and MLB salaries and their sexuality has nothing to do with baseball or is McDowell’s business.

This was about as childish as Grantham giving the choke sign to the Florida players. What did Richt do? Nothing. The Braves will probably do the same thing, nothing. At some point coaches have to be held to a higher standard. Grantham should have been fired, McDowell needs to be fired. You don’t get 2nd or 3rd chances when you’re in the positions they are in. This is exactly why pro athletes should not be viewed as heroes! Just because you can pitch, catch or hit a ball does not mean your a good human being. In real life these so called heroes are really just jerks. I have met a handful of athletes in my lifetime and all of them were jerks with the exception of Dale Murphy (surprise, surprise). We (Society) treats them like God’s and they are just human. Many of them uneducated because they did not get schooling because they were playing a game.
Roger……you are fixing to learn a lesson the hardway. For the family in SF get over it…….Teach your kids that athletes in real life are normally jerks. Oh, and your an idiot for hiring Gloria Alred!

After reviewing all of the evidence carefully, the Braves organization has come to the conclusion that Roger (McDowell) acted appropriately in the incident that occured earlier this week at AT&T Park. As an organization and a family, we never condone the use of slurs targeted at any group, whether they be based on racial, ethnic, religious or other affiliation, including lifestyle choice.
However, after a thorough discussion, Braves management, including the Liberty Media Group, have come to realize that insults and threats directed exclusively at Mr. Quinn were logical, appropriate and proportionate to what he deserved under the circumstances. It is our sincere hope that Mr. Quinn will seek professional help and that he and his family will avoid baseball parks of any kind in the future.
In the last 48 hours, my staff and I have spent countless hours reviewing video of the press conference with Ms. Alred and examining the press photos, as well as Mr. Quinn’s Facebook profile.
Based on Mr. Quinn’s dubious employment status, Mrs. Quinn’s repulsive appearance and the twins’ obvious lack of good judgment in choosing their parents, we have come to the conclusion that Roger did owe an apology to everyone involved in the incident – other than the Quinn family – and we believe his previous apology was sincere. And we hope this resolves the matter.
Thank you.

I support coach McDowell, and anybody who tells some snotty, liberal trash San Francisco fan exactly what he deserves to hear. That city is a disgrace to the greatest country on earth. San Francisco? What a joke. Those parents need to know that they are at a sporting event, and teach their kids what’s right or wrong. Also wtf is Gloria Allred doing with this. She almost makes me as sick as that sea hag Nancy pelosi. I’m sick of all this political correctness that everyone seems to demand these days. According to reports the incident took place during pregame batting practice along the left field fence. Apparently three fans were giving McDowell the business when he responded with some vulgarities. As most parents would do, another fan complained to McDowell about his choice of language in front of his kids who were there to hopefully retrieve a ball hit over the fence.
A complaint to the Giants front office and a request for a follow up ought to have sufficed, bringing in an attorney was over kill.
That McDowell failed to give a wave and a “sorry about that” to dad and his kids is disheartening, imagine if he had tossed them a couple of balls. A simple gesture would have changed all this.
When Tommy Lasorda was tossed out of games at Candlestick he had to walk down the right field line to reach the Visitors clubhouse. All the way he would blow kisses and wave to the jeering fans. And they loved him for it.

This is plain ridiculous. why should professional athletes be held to a higher standard than the average person. If you stood in line to get into a bar, and abused the bouncer – a professional in the industry, would you still expect to be allowed into a bar. And people saying if I responded like that in my job I would be fired……if you are abused over the phone, you can just hang up, but if someone was constantly annoying and abusing you in any environment you should be able to stand up for yourself. Roger McDowell said something that out of context is offensive. If indeed the three men were gay then it was offensive. If they were not gay then he was actually using their own prejudices to insult them as otherwise why should a hetrosexual man be upset about being called gay? Roger McDowell has been in this position for 6 years and this is the first reported incident. I know who I back in this. And I really do not believe that he would have said children dont belong at the ballpark……I really do believe that the biggest issue that needs to be addressed is actually fan behaviour. I have been at games where fans have leant accross me and 2 other people to chant $%£” the opposition team (ie$%£” red sox in new york, $%£” dodgers in San Fran) just to abuse the opposing teams fans. On one occasion this was to abuse opposition fans consisting of a mother and 2 children under 10. totally classless, but apprently in most ballparks, totally acceptable. Lastly, it should be remembered that in all likelihood, Roger McDowell responded to abusive behaviour from fans. Why is this turkey and his family so worried about what McDowell said yet not complaining about the language of the original hecklers…..this is just a scam to make money. And by the way, and this applies to all involved in this farcical incident…..sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.

If you would feel the same way as you do with the circumstances of situation that actually occured then you have a valid reason to respond. IF you would have gone nuts with the Mets guy doing and saying the same thing, at that point I would say you are not very objective. Whose ox is being gored???
Roger appears quite cerebral so it would have been more of a challenge for fans to match him in a battle of wits than it would with the other 80% or so of baseball players with the mental acumen of a pine tree.

Just because you paid for a ticket doesn’t mean you have the right to spew bad language and not expect a response. Fans are ridiculous these days. And…AND!! Gloria Allred??? The one who represented a Tiger Mistress…come on. How can you take this lady seriously? That just has class all over it…right.

I just wanted to repost this from another blog, it’s good stuff about Roger McDowell.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jerry Pritikin aka The Bleacher Preacher:
I just read about Roger McDowell, and his bad choice of antics for any fans, especially Giant Fans. And that McDonnell apologized for his poor choice of actions.
However, I known Roger as one of, if not the best fan friendly players I had the pleasure to watch and know for his many years as a Met,Philly and Dodger pitcher. I first met him in 1984, during a pennant chase… he with the Mets and I was a Super cubs fan. He played Frisbee prior to important games in September. From that time on when ever he came to town, he would always come out to the bleachers and ask” Got your Frisbee?” In September of 1987 on a drizzling rainy day… he came out and asked the question…
there were few fans in the bleachers and no chance of batting practice. As I took my Frisbee out a rookie usher said if i threw it… i would get kicked out of the park. I threw it and sure enough my 75 game streak for that season came to an end. As it turned out…
it made the Chicago Sun-Times and even Sports Illustrated. However, for the next 10 years… when ever he was in town… he came out to say hello, or play catch with a ball or Frisbee. The fans in the cheap seats loved him. Often, people would throw him their cheap cameras… and he would take pictures of them from the field, of his teammates and of himself making funny faces.
On hot days, before a game he would pull out the hose from under the bleachers and cool down the fans. That earned him a “Gunga Din” Award from me. When he was with the Dodgers, he and Orel Hershiser would take a clean garbage can, put a new Dodger jacket, a Bat a signed ball and a hundred dollar bill into it and then had fans from throughout the bleachers trying to make a basket with a baseball. It gave fans a chance, and when someone one won… they got a standing ovation from their fellow bleacherites, and Roger and Orel.
Once, when his team had a traveling day, he stayed behind and sat with us in the bleachers, and he walked over to the fans in wheel chairs, and signed their scorecard or gave them a ball. This went on for years… and never once did I see him mistreat a fan or make unkind gestures.
So when I heard of this story tonight, I wanted to let Brave fans and all baseball fans know that Roger McDowell is a good guy, who made a few bad choices on this one day in a career as a player and coach for over 25 years. I urge the Braves and Giant Fans fans to accept his apology, and maybe Roger can make a donation to a good gay cause.(San Francisco and Atlanta’s Gay Community Centers). I happen to be gay, and spoke OUT against Cubs Pitcher Julian Taverez in 2001 when he made anti-gay remarks, as well as John Rocker. But both those guys had a history of being hot headed and anti-gay. My best wishes to him for all those great years he entertained fans in Chicago and elsewhere.
Cheers and Good Sportsmanship Always,
Jerry Pritikin aka The Bleacher Preacher.

A baseball team coach is heckled and heckled a fan or fans back. The fans can dish it out, but can’t take it. Any opportunity to sue a public figure. I wonder if this suing fan has any mysterious falls in a supermarket? I say launch an investigation into the fans background.
Fans heckle from the stands and when they are heckled back cry and whine like sissys. I understand the fans were using a baseball bat and making sexual gestures and using the bat in a sexual way towards Roger, but that is acceptable behavior.

This is terrible. I will say, that just last week I took my little cousin (10 years old) to a game at Turner Field and we watched BP from next to the Braves bullpen. Roger threw her a baseball as he was walking into the bullpen and even signed it for her. He was very nice. Maybe he only acts this way at other ballparks? Maybe it was isolated? Who knows, just saying all my experiences with him have been pleasant.

Who gives a flip what he said. The fans have the power to say whatever the hell they want to and not get in trouble and just because one MLB pitching coach says something back they nail him. There is worse things being said to players all the time you all know this is true but nothing gets said or done unless its public. That guy probably deserved it man. So yall just quit with your bull crap because I bet everyone of you atleast once has said something negative to an opposing player. Fans are ruthless seems like fans should just drop it like THE PLAYERS DO EVERY TIME THEY HEAR CRAP. BUT NO OMG HE JUST CUSSED AT ME IM GOING TO SUE HIM. GOOD GREIF!!!!!!!!! Regardless of what did happen, I think the Braves are going to have to think long and hard about bringing in a new pitching coach at this point in the season. The pitching has been fantastic, especially this last week (minus Asencio of course), and the Braves have to consider whether changing pitching coaches now would have a negative effect on the pitching staff. Do we really want to mess around with how the starters have thrown?
I’m predicting fine and maybe suspension for McDowell now, but potentially not being brought back for next season, when changing pitching coaches wouldn’t really interrupt anything.

If I was approaching drunk or mentally ill fans in the stands I would have a bat in my hand for defensive purposes. Fans drinking alcohol at sporting events are the most repugnant, vile, disgusting, obnoxious, repulsive excuses for human beings I have ever seen.
I applaud Roger for having a bat with him to protect himself. Fans are ignorant and violent as history has proven.

Hey, a press conference with his kids? Doesn’t look like too much a publicity stunt by this family to me. And really, is all this attention good for his kids? Instead of just talking to his children about what transpired at the game, he is using them as his pawns to get money or at the very least get attention.
personally, I have a child and would not ever even consider subjecting her to this kind of senseless publicity mongering. Plus, what does it teach them? If someone hurts your feelings, you can call the police? Wow.
Certainly Roger should never have said what he said. And certainly he should be held accountable. But before we bash him, remember that you hear all kinds of things at sporting events, and they are usually coming from the stands. A player or coach says something in response and all of a sudden that person automatically “has to be held accountable”.
The real issue here? The fact that this loser family is subjecting their kids to this crap. You know as well as I do by those “press conference” pictures that his kids were coached to look sad, etc. Yeah, that’s real good for them. How about if you are going to blow this up, leave the kids at home? Ahh, no, but then you get fewer sympathy points. Screw this guy, his wife and their cold lawyer. At this point, it is the exploitation of their kids helping them?

First post all year. Like what I see so far, especially the pitching. I’ve question some of the moves by Fredi G but still it’s only April. As far as McDowell is concerned, we don’t know the full story. In my opinion he has done a good and sometimes great work with the pitching staffs over the past six years. I agree with NJ Choppin that the only thing we know for sure is that this guy Quinn is exploiting his own children for whatever reasons. If the Braves even consider firing McDowell I would be furious. Caving in to pressure coming from the likes of Gloria Allred is unthinkable. Worst case scenario? The Braves fire McDowell and subsequently acquiece to Allred’s demand that they hire Richard Simmons as his replacement.

I don’t get it…if you cheat in this game i.e. take drugs you can still get in the record books and play for the same team but is you say a word your job is on the line. Baseball needs to fix it’s foundation and beliefs. Cheating is something I don’t want my kid to take part in but baseball makes it seem OK to the kids.
I hope he keeps his job with the Braves.

No, I don’t need the other side of the story, thank you. Hecklers are part of McDowell’s job and he should learn how to handle them professionally. (1) His words were unacceptable, (2) His homophobic gestures were even worse, and (3) His “teeth” threat at a FAN while holding a bat is just that: a serious threat.
Hey LIBERTY MEDIA: Let’s see how many of your revenue dollars come from the wallets of homosexuals? Further, let’s see how many of your revenue dollars come from the parents of kids who, according to one of your own coaches, don’t belong at the game.
Yeah, this isn’t over….by a longshot.

It’s a ball park. he shouldn’t have said kids don’t belong at the ball park though. After all, kids are future fans. . As far as ” how much are your teeth worth?” , this is not a threat unless Roger was actively brandishing the bat in a threatening manner. perhaps Daddy had nice, white, pperfect teeth and Roger thought they were caps. Who knows? no where have i seen anything that said Roger was actively threatening with the bat. fine him and move on. People need to learn that being sue happy costs everyone in the long run. My philosophy has always been to be a fan of my team, and not neccesarily of the players or coaches associated with my team. Sure, its great to have guys like Chipper and, probably, Brian McCann that stay with a team throughout their entire career. But nobody’s bigger than the game or the team. So I have no sympathy for Mcdowell. Sorry, but you just can’t say things like he did in public, no matter what the circumstances. I would say the same thing if it were Bobby Cox or Chipper Jones, but the Braves have to let him go.

Bottom-line here, just about everyone on this blog, pro- or anti-McDowell has at one point used the term f@g, h0m0, or likely something worse. It’s not right and it’s hurtful. But, it unfortunately become a part of our culture several years ago. It has no place professionally; but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I’ve never lost my job for saying something like that. I don’t think he should either.

BTW, I make a habit of expressing gratitude to our servicemen/women, buying them a drink or a sandwich or whatever in the airport. This was written by a guy who claims to have been right next to Quinn when it happened. This was in the comments section accompanying an article on the S.F. Chronicle’s site.
I was there and was about 2 people away from this guy with the complaint.

If they are on the fence about his performance, then he is getting the boot. Tom Glavine can fill in quite nicely, and Leo Mazzone would probably take his job back in a heartbeat. Looking for a underling issue to bring up which has nothing to do with this.
And that is telling it lie it is.

Get your agenda out of this discussion. No comparison. Do not try it, Barry is going to jail because he did not say yes or no but had the ego to tell a Barry Story in a yes or no question, but that is another deal.
Roger will have is day and we will see what story he has and probaly hear from others.
The idiot hired an attorney asap.

I am calling you out. It is a double standard. If the Braves or baseball do not do something about Mc Dowell and Lowe, then they cannot present themselves as being upstanding with high integrity. You cannot do and say something deplorable in the presence of kids or risk the lives of others while driving drunk. That IS my agenda as you put it. You are comparing uncomparable situations and Roger will getpunished but he didn’t lie to a Grand Jury and obviously pay off greg anderson. Barry will get little if any jail time if any. I have not said anything about lowe i don’t know emonough to comment on that. But your agenda about roger going to jail at this point to a guilty Barry Bonds.
Insane
Lets send kobe to jail or put him on trial he admitted to gay slurs.
Loose the agenda and read more about Roger and what he has done for years entertaining the fans before you believe a money hungry fan. Alot worse is done in ball parks than that go to one and listen.

This incident clearly shows that Roger McDowell is a complete idiot with a type “A” personality that can’t control his actions or his mouth. Mcdowell is probably a controlling, aggressive individual that looses control easily in certain issues. Fire the idiot and get someone else. There are lots of people in MLB that can coach pitchers. How ’bout a guy named Greg Maddux? Just sayin’.

I agree with the Bream Team. I was at the game Friday night in San Fran. The Braves were in the first base dug out, therefore their bull pen was down the RIGHT field line? So why was Roger and our pitcher in the Giants pen? The gay slur might be true. The threat and kids at the ballpark bit I don’t believe. And hiring an “ambulance Chaser” such as Allred just furthers the point that this Quinn guy is looking for a payday. How about, if it’s determined that the allegations are false, Roger hires his OWN attorney and sues for libel and defamation of character? Maybe then, these idiotic and frivolous law suites would stop.

Leo the Lip:
Although you may be correct that Mazzone’s time has passed, Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz each started over 5 games for only six of the Braves’ fourteen consecutive divisional championship clubs from 1991-2005, or in less than fifty percent of those seasons. In 2004, when Atlanta won 96 games and virtually tied for the league-lead in ERA, Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz combined to make 0 starts for the Braves and the first two were no longer with the organization. Mazzone’s genius seemed to reside in his ability to resurrect or maximize talented and perhaps previously successful veteran pitchers who had recently fallen on hard times or underachieved. Think of Jaret Wright, John Burkett, John Thomson, Mike Hampton, Mike Remlinger, Chris Hammond, Darren Holmes, Rudy Seanez, Steve Bedrosian, Mike Bielecki, et. al., or even “older” rookies such as Greg McMichael and Damian Moss. Mazzone’s work with these lesser-types allowed the Braves to possess elite overall pitching staffs rather than just two or three Hall of Fame starting pitchers surrounded by lackluster performers.
Mind you, some concerns indeed existed in Mazzone’s later years about his ability to reach the next generation of young pitchers and so he might not be the man for the future. But his legacy largely lies in his ability to resuscitate or enhance the careers of pitchers that other organizations had given-up on or internal prospects whom even the Braves may have felt tepid towards. With the older, more mature pitchers (as opposed to the hotshot youngsters in their early twenties from the late nineties onward), Mazzone’s voice appeared very effective. Perhaps because they were older, more thick-skinned, more conscientious, and more humble, these pitchers seemed willing to learn from Mazzone, embrace his sometimes-caustic preaching, and better themselves as a result. He might not be the man to guide the next wave of prospects, but I would be intrigued to see what Mazzone might do for a scuffling veteran such as Kenshin Kawakami.

Seems that as usual, there are two distinct groups reacting to this story.
The first group is saying let’s wait until we know the complete story with all the facts before we decide what to do. Very smart, very astute, very logical reaction.
The second group is screaming that McDowell should be fired, shot, jailed, shot to the moon, etc. Very emotional, very childish, very illogical reaction even to the point of using all sorts of slurs and name-calling to chastise those who supposedly are guilty of slurs and name-calling.
The second group is the same type of group, if not the same people, who wanted to bury the Duke lacrosse team. These are the same types of people who wanted to immediately imprison those who Tawana Brawley accused, without awaiting even a trial.
If only these people would mature enough to realize that reacting emotionally is not always the best reaction. I guess none of them have ever been falsely accused or had anyone exaggerate or lie about them, because they obviously don’t believe it can happen.

1. It’s the right thing to do. Gay bashing, dropping F bombs in front of kids and threatening fans… Are you kidding me? If I treated my customers that way I’d be fired on the spot.

LEAVE MCDOWELL ALONE. One would think he committed a serious felony or something. No he should not have made the comments but I a sick of all the PC nonsense. If you disagree with a black person or the President…automatically you are a racist. If you see two gay people in public displaying extremely antisocial behavior and dont like it…does that make you homophobic? He was responding to extremely tasteless behavior. If he had made comments to some gay people out of the blue just because they were gay it would be different. Why do we kiss the #### of one and a half percent of the population by making this a big deal.

First, all of the allegations have not been proven and the man has been found guilty without all the details being known. Second, it is highly suspect that such a high profile attorney is involved. Third, I wonder if the Giants fan would have had such a problem had the Giants not been swept by the Braves? Fourth, at least one third of the fans at the ballpark say things in the proximity of children that are 99% worse. Fifth, I wonder what kind of monetary damages the family is seeking since their lives were soooo destroyed by this incident. Sixth, I wonder if they stayed for the rest of the game. Seventh, he apologized…. so why were his words so capable of irreperable harm and harbored so much truth and meaning then when he apologizes they carry no weight at all? What a fickle, fickle generation we live in. Hope the kids actually see some of the money their parents get! Unbelievable.

To all who are saying that Bobby would have never allowed this need to remember he did allow this stuff to happen. Remember young Chipper and a certain restaurant in Florida? Remember Rafael Furcal and his two..yes two…DUIs? And lest we forget the shenanigans of one John Rocker. Bobby tolerated those instances and would have dealt with Lowe behind the scenes just as he did with Furcal since it is basically the same situation. Remember “Fooky” never missed any games while awaiting punishment for his DUI or any real public scrutiny.

There comes a time when we make too much of a situation that we don’t know the truth about. If Mcdowell did as he has been acused, fine him and let him apoligize, if he doesn’t fire him fire. We have bigger and more important things to deal with, like the 9 American lives that were lost this week in Afganistan. His actions pale in comparision to America wasting our young men and women’s lives in a war that is only supported by politicians. It’s time to realize what’s really important in life, and it’s not today’s professional athletes.
