Something in this story doesn’t add up. Someone tells McDowell “there’s kids present” so he responds by saying “kids don’t belong in the ballpark” and procedes to threaten this dude with a bat??
I did the same thing at Sesame Street on Ice last year. It’s not unheard of.

Man. Last evening i post how tough this season is going to be because, win or lose, this team just doesn’t blow anyone out. And every game is going to be tense and close and hair-pulling tight.

The people that he allegedly yelled the homophobic slurs at are not even a part of the story. And I know how Gloria Allred operates. She is not the type of attorney a family from San Francisco would hire if they did not want attention. That’s what she does. And, sadly, if true, it’s not the first or the last time someone in the pro sports world has or will use words like that. I don’t agree with comments like that, but they do happen more than they should. I just don’t think someone should lose their job over what, at this time, is a one time lapse in judgement, even a big one. Besides, why do I automatically have to believe them? Not saying I think they are lying, but I only have their word- what makes it the absolute truth?

Ed Lucas with the .204 batting average?
Face it, behind Gonzo, we’re VERY vulnerable at SS. There’s Hicks, Diory who has been proven not to be able to hit MLB pitching, and Ed Lucas who right now can’t hit AAA pitching. Only way to get another good backup SS is via trade.

Einsteindawg – So Gloria Alred is the problem here? Remember there was a violent incident recently at the ballbark that involved a fan. MLB will have to move to deal with this quickly, and so do the braves, this type of violence does not work well when trying to sell tickets in a slow economy.
My guess is Gloria Alred wold happily pay a higher tax rate if it meant more American jobs. I know I would; would you?

Dumbfound – who’s saying the N word in a derogatory manner? I know from personal experience that it’s widely used in the black community, but for them it means “bro” or just “person” and has no negative connotation. Plus, I haven’t heard professional athletes say it (or read about professional athletes saying it)

[DOB- Why isn’t college baseball more popular?]
“Matt: aluminum bats. For me, at least, that’s why the college game barely resembles what I consider true baseball. But with the bat restrictions in place this year, they’ve at least begun to address that. If I’m not mistaken, scoring is way down in college ball this season (someone who knows, please tell me if that’s correct).
In the past, I couldn’t stand watching 175-pound hitters get jammed on a pitch and still — ping! — hit an opposite-field home run. To me, that’s like Arena League version of the game we watch in minors and majors.”
A Damn Good Q&A that was on the last blog in which I’m late catching on…
Not to mention college baseball doesn’t get the hype because its players have to advance 2-4 more levels of minor league ball as opposed to the NFL/NBA. In those 2 other sports/leagues their players get drafted out of College and recieve the playing-time/money/fame/prestige from the day they are drafted, not like that in mlb, so 90 percent of the fans don’t care to watch college baseball

Mike, that might be the guy. Someone wrote either earlier this week or late last week that he was an option to be called up when the Braves returned to ATL.
Might as well. Look at Brooks… he won’t see an inning on the field, so if he’s only around for his bat, the Braves could benefit from having a guy who could actually hit on the bench.

Jay Dubu, I agree with what I think you’re getting at with your 6:23. Everyone says “Diory has proven he can’t hit major league pitching.” Really? He’s had two cups of coffee in the bigs, with a total of 94 AB’s, and a good chunk of those were in a bench role. That’s not enough of a sample to prove that he definitively “can’t hit major league pitching”.

Yeah, Murph, as someone said, yeah, it’s Mauro Gomez. I wouldn’t pencil him in as a backup SS though.

We Caught some lucky breaks today that make up for the crap-luck that happened in Mondays game…
The Maybin Play against Chipper Probably gets caught if it were Pestorino and the error on the ball hit By Martini, well Howard probably smuthers it down some way…I’m just glad we got some lucky breaks today that otherwise could go either way against a good team on paper

Well LAG, one difference is that Hernandez has hit better in the minors than Hicks, but I agree it’s too small a sample on him too. Hicks also plays great defense, while Diory is more or less average.

A rep for the Braves released an additional statement, saying, “We are concerned by these allegations and the behavior described by a witness today. This in no way represents the Braves organization and the conduct we expect of our employees.”

depending on when you go, it can be quite a trip…between 4:00-5:00 it might take close to 2 hours. Plan a minimum of an hour and a half just to be safe (It’s about 45 minutes from my place and I’m about 20-25 minutes from Long Beach- add another 20 minutes to get to the freeway from your hotel…) A cab would probably cost around what you pay in airfare and public transportation sucks so if you don’t have a car, it may be tricky

Braves players, coaches, manager wouldn’t comment on McDowell situation, and Roger himself was not made available to us after the game. Braves said their only comments, for now, would be these statements from team and McDowell:
Braves Statement
“We were made aware of an incident in San Francisco this past Saturday. We are concerned by these allegations and the behavior described by a witness today. This in no way represents the Braves organization and the conduct we expect of our employees. We will withhold further comments until we finish gathering information.”
Roger McDowell statement
“I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions. “

If this family did not want publicity, didn’t want the national attention, why did they not just contact the team, or hire someone to do that? Why did they go straight to the national press conference with an attorney famous for holding press conferences? Obviously there was some kind of interaction between Roger and fans on Saturday, but to what extent remains to be seen

Gloria Allred’s MO is trial by press conference. As for Roger McDowell, well, if you are dumb enough to get suckered into a shouting match with a fan or fans, then maybe you deserve to get your attitude adjusted. Just saying, don’t allow yourself to get put into these positions because there are lots of folks looking for ways to exploit others.

McDowell played professional baseball for 11 years, and has coached at the ML level for 6 years. This isn’t the first time he’s encountered heckling fans.
