Chipper Jones and John Smoltz have been known to be surly, rude and arrogant to fans. I’ve heard from a number of people that John Smoltz is similar to Curt Shilling in how both treat fans and their conservative, know it all views.

Since when is being “surly, rude or arrogant” a crime? Why is this even being brought up in the context of recent events? And of all the people, you are complaining about “surly, rude or arrogant”?

Murph, April 29th, 2011, 10:52 am … “Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I had no idea you could refuse any kind of DUI test requested by a police officer. “

This is America, Murph. The police are gathering evidence against you. They cannot compel you to give evidence against yourself. That takes a court order.

I thought that Miguel Cabrera was inspired when he was pulled over for DUI. He refused to comply with the tests and, once he was out of the car, proceeded to guzzle a fifth of something. “Really occifer, I wasssssn’t drunk when I was driving. I’m just…burp…drunk now.”

Not that I condone drunk driving. Folks should do jail-time, lose licenses, etc.

Toughest drunk test ever? “Now juggle these, do a tap dance, and sing the ‘Catalena Magdalena Hoopensteiner’ song.”

DAP: I didn’t know until now that the video was on the net. That was the most ridiculous press-conference ever. And then to think, the complaint is that McDowell did these things in front of the kids, and there’s Gloria is doing these things in front of the kids. We should get a lawyer to demand an apology from her and possibly press charges for repeatedly exposing the kids to such things…

“A porn film shouldn’t be ’simulated’ or you got ripped off!”

Perhaps, but that’s the magic of Hollywood – or whoever makes a porn film in his garage.

No one’s “blaming the victim.” What’s suspicious is reenacting the very thing in front of the alleged victims that is claimed to have greatly offended and, in Gloria Allred’s world, traumatized them. And doing so knowing that that simulation would be broadcast for other kids to possibly see.

Something stinks about the whole exercise – or all concerned are using incredibly poor judgement.

In my opinion whether DLowe drinks or not is not the issue. I don’t care what he does on his time off.

What I care about is drinking and driving. Lost a couple of close friends to drunk drivers.

DLowe has enough money to hire a driver or a cab or a limo.

OK i just watched the Gloria Alred debacle on youtube. And 1st off – shame on the man and woman for allowing Alred to bring the kids on TV to be apart of this circus (obviously for dramatic effect) they look like a nice family. 2nd it is obvious how staged everything is. OK girls hold your papers up and look at Ms. Alred while she is speaking and smile at her sometimes. Just the positioning of everyone. I think personally that his family(kids) would have been better served by just letting it go instead of dragging them into this. Like taking kids to a porn flick with the intention of teaching them how wrong it is. Overkill!

BravesQueen-

In response to your question about whether the Braves will not let DLowe start on Sunday, I’m not sure how they can handle that- doubt they can send him down so they’d have to send a reliever if they wanted to call up someone to take his place, leaving them one pen arm down. And as far as I am aware, if they suspend him he can’t be replaced on the 25 man roster. (Not 100% on that one…) – If that’s the case, from a strictly baseball standpoint, it might not be an option to call someone up. (Again, this is purely looking at it from a baseball standpoint. From a moral standpoint, after the team gathers all the available information, I hope they will make the right decision, whether it’s a suspension, counseling and a fine, whatever…)

I think the fans biggest mistake was bringing Allred into the situation. The woman has little credibility left after all of her past antics and her absolute passion for media attention. That entire press conference was a set upo (as usual with her) and I have little doubt that the reason it too five days was so she was certain thy were all well rehearsed and had a makeover.

Well, I think you have to put the Lowe situation in the larger context of it happening on the heels of the McDowell controversy. I think the negative publicity from the McDowell situation can’t help Lowe.

Plus, tolerance for driving under the influence has become less and less with each passing year. Not only that, in Lowe’s case, if true, he wasn’t only under the influence but racing? It wasn’t as if Lowe was heading home from a dinner in his Honda Pilot and was pulled over and found inebriated.

I think he might get hit harder than Furcal. But that’s a pure guess.

I wonder what his BAC was. I personally think the limit should be raised. We all have our drunk driving horror stories with friends/family dying, but how often does the driver have a BAC of .09? It’s generally much higher.

The real concern here was the fact that Lowe was racing. That’s unacceptable sober. He should definitely lose his licence for some amount of time, but I hope he doesn’t miss any starts.

From a news article about Raffy’s 2nd DUI:

Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal was arrested on drunken driving charges Friday, his second DUI arrest in four years and a potential distraction to a team trying to wrap up its 13th straight division title.

Furcal didn’t start Friday night’s game against Montreal, though the team planned no immediate disciplinary action. Manager Bobby Cox said his leadoff hitter could be back in the lineup Saturday.

“The embarrassment that I’m sure Raffy is suffering is felt by us all,” general manager John Schuerholz said. “We’re sorry it happened. It’s behind us now. Hopefully we can go on to battle for the division title.”

I’d be VERY surprised if Lowe didn’t start on Sunday.

Tommy T

I don’t think Lowe will miss a start and I also think that there’s a good chance McDowell loses his job. What does this say about where we are as a society? Lowe (alledgedly) commits a dangerous crime and will suffer minor professional consequences, while McDowell simply show poor judgment and bad taste and IMO will suffer much harsher penalties. I think this sets up to be just another example of bowing to the pathetic witch-hunting of the Politcal Correctness Police.

The big difference between Lowe and McDowell is the nature of their contracts. Lowe’s is protected by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Player’s Union. McDowell’s isn’t.

Unless there is some kind of clause in Lowe’s contract that criminal behavior can result in voiding the contract, Braves have to pay him and play him.

I dont have a problem with drinking, nor do I have a problem with drinking and driving as long as you are still fine to drive. I just dont understand why you just dont have a driver if you have made as much money as Lowe. Why put yourself in that situation? Kind of like when Pacman Jones kept getting in trouble at strip clubs. Why keep going and put yourself in that situation? If you need a stripper that bad have a private party. He has the money. Just like Lowe has the money for a driver. Why put yourself in that situation?

As for the ones who think the Braves will come down hard, you will be disappointed. It wasnt that long ago Furcal had I believe 3 of them(may of been 2 but I think 3). He will get a fine and some community service after the season and that will be it, and that is all he deserves.

This is because coaches are more easily replaced than players.

Reckless Driving is a major driving offense. It results in being ineligible by preferred companies. The DUI along with his violations says that he will be cancelled by his insurance carrier. Somehow, I suspect that he is probably with a high risk company now. I’m sure from what his history has been that he probably would not quallify for a Personal Liability Policy. The factor that is recorded in databases around the country by SS# & DL# will show that he not eligible also.
