Chipper Jones and John Smoltz have been known to be surly, rude and arrogant to fans. I’ve heard from a number of people that John Smoltz is similar to Curt Shilling in how both treat fans and their conservative, know it all views.
Since when is being “surly, rude or arrogant” a crime? Why is this even being brought up in the context of recent events? And of all the people, you are complaining about “surly, rude or arrogant”?
April 29th, 201111:26 am
Wish we would hear something from Braves office on both issues.
bravofan …. Phillis with a easy Schedule this Year only play 12 Home Game till yesterday.
Phillis only have one 9 Games Road trip this year (Aug)…The Braves has two 10 games Road trip, the one just finish and the other one in June (3 NYM,3FLA,4 Hos)….Not fair….

Murph, April 29th, 2011, 10:52 am … “Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I had no idea you could refuse any kind of DUI test requested by a police officer. “
This is America, Murph. The police are gathering evidence against you. They cannot compel you to give evidence against yourself. That takes a court order.
I thought that Miguel Cabrera was inspired when he was pulled over for DUI. He refused to comply with the tests and, once he was out of the car, proceeded to guzzle a fifth of something. “Really occifer, I wasssssn’t drunk when I was driving. I’m just…burp…drunk now.”
Not that I condone drunk driving. Folks should do jail-time, lose licenses, etc.
Toughest drunk test ever? “Now juggle these, do a tap dance, and sing the ‘Catalena Magdalena Hoopensteiner’ song.”
DAP: I didn’t know until now that the video was on the net. That was the most ridiculous press-conference ever. And then to think, the complaint is that McDowell did these things in front of the kids, and there’s Gloria is doing these things in front of the kids. We should get a lawyer to demand an apology from her and possibly press charges for repeatedly exposing the kids to such things…
April 29th, 201111:28 am
“A porn film shouldn’t be ’simulated’ or you got ripped off!”
Perhaps, but that’s the magic of Hollywood – or whoever makes a porn film in his garage.
No one’s “blaming the victim.” What’s suspicious is reenacting the very thing in front of the alleged victims that is claimed to have greatly offended and, in Gloria Allred’s world, traumatized them. And doing so knowing that that simulation would be broadcast for other kids to possibly see.
Something stinks about the whole exercise – or all concerned are using incredibly poor judgement.
April 29th, 201111:29 am
My bad. Read too fast. I get ahead of myself sometimes.
Money certainly does not bring good sense along with it’s acquisition. If it did, Trump would get a good hairpiece.
Nice one Lew.
April 29th, 201111:31 am
Have y’all noticed how all the McDowell using the “F” word in front the children talk has gone away since it was noted McDowell was a mere amateur compared to Bmac in the swearing category?
Owl – Done it myself once or twi – er a few hundred times
April 29th, 201111:32 am
I had to perform a sobriety test once. I wasn’t drunk, but I was speeding, and had an unopened 12-pack in the car. It was cold out, and I had a hard time performing the test while stone cold sober. Those things can be tricky.
Besides… the action Gloria was demonstrating looked very much like Roger may have simply been practicing his pool shot. There just wasn’t a pool que immediately available. Why she had to take it straight down to the gutter…?
April 29th, 201111:33 am
SAVE ROGER and we need Derrek on the mound DUI or not.
April 29th, 201111:34 am
In my opinion whether DLowe drinks or not is not the issue. I don’t care what he does on his time off.
What I care about is drinking and driving. Lost a couple of close friends to drunk drivers.
DLowe has enough money to hire a driver or a cab or a limo.
No excuse for drunk driving IMHO.
OK i just watched the Gloria Alred debacle on youtube. And 1st off – shame on the man and woman for allowing Alred to bring the kids on TV to be apart of this circus (obviously for dramatic effect) they look like a nice family. 2nd it is obvious how staged everything is. OK girls hold your papers up and look at Ms. Alred while she is speaking and smile at her sometimes. Just the positioning of everyone. I think personally that his family(kids) would have been better served by just letting it go instead of dragging them into this. Like taking kids to a porn flick with the intention of teaching them how wrong it is. Overkill!
April 29th, 201111:35 am
If I were the angry parent, I would have minded my own business if I saw someone behaving irrationally like that, provided that there was no immediate danger to my family. Part of minding my business would be letting my kids know that you shouldn’t act that way.
April 29th, 201111:36 am
If you drink you should drink at home or at least not drive.
yeah all this excitement I had to take my tickets for tonight off stubhub…and I guess I’ll make sure to get their early to see if mcdowell gets heckled in the bullpen. Assuming action by the team doesn’t prevent his presence.
April 29th, 201111:37 am
In response to your question about whether the Braves will not let DLowe start on Sunday, I’m not sure how they can handle that- doubt they can send him down so they’d have to send a reliever if they wanted to call up someone to take his place, leaving them one pen arm down. And as far as I am aware, if they suspend him he can’t be replaced on the 25 man roster. (Not 100% on that one…) – If that’s the case, from a strictly baseball standpoint, it might not be an option to call someone up. (Again, this is purely looking at it from a baseball standpoint. From a moral standpoint, after the team gathers all the available information, I hope they will make the right decision, whether it’s a suspension, counseling and a fine, whatever…)
I think the fans biggest mistake was bringing Allred into the situation. The woman has little credibility left after all of her past antics and her absolute passion for media attention. That entire press conference was a set upo (as usual with her) and I have little doubt that the reason it too five days was so she was certain thy were all well rehearsed and had a makeover.
April 29th, 201111:38 am
wow I thought we beat the hell out of this topic the day/night it was first reported…this is like 50 shaun’s (no offense intended shaun)
April 29th, 201111:39 am
The NFL has a program where they offer to send a limo, or luxury car ANYWHERE to pick you up, and take you wherever if you’ve been drinking. I wonder if MLB has something like that.
lew – apparently he tried to go to several sources (including ESPN through twitter/email) before he went to her
I think if Lowe did, in fact, drive drunk, the Braves will come down pretty hard on him.
April 29th, 201111:40 am
Man, when are they going to announce the outcome of the Roger situation? Send out the press release and get to work on DLowe damage control. C’mon, I’ve got things to do today.
April 29th, 201111:41 am
WOW Would you ever have thought the blog would be reading like this two days ago?
April 29th, 201111:42 am
Gloria Allred is the NBA of lawyers. Zero legitimacy, money hungry, boring, ugly, etc etc etc.
April 29th, 201111:43 am
I agree that I don’t care what someone does on their off time, until it affects their on the job performance. I don’t want my airline pilot to have been out drunk the night before he flies my plane even though he might have sobered up.(sure it happens) I doubt the Braves Org. cares if the guys knock back a couple after a game even when they have a game the next day, what you don’t want is poor performance because someone had a “few too many” or has a drinking problem.
tiger – Maybe going to those other places without anyone doing anything about it indicates they have little credibility? It’s been stated that they immediately went to stadium security and then the SF Police. Why didn’t they make an issue of it?
The entire situation has a Rotten in Denmark smell permeating it.
There’s no game from yesterday to talk about.
April 29th, 201111:44 am
monty, that’s not taking into consideration that this Quinn guy isn’t doing this for his own personal gain. I mean, he tried to reachout to ESPN and it pretty much sounds like he was looking for notoriety.
Also, nobody else has come forward with any accusations. No witnesses. No alleged “ho mo couple.”
April 29th, 201111:45 am
I can’t see Rodger being heckled inside the Ted THIS IS BRAVES COUNTRY our place.
Owl Hunter, April 29th, 2011, 11:32 am … “I had a hard time performing the test while stone cold sober.”
Was it the back flips, the hand-stand, or the tap dancing that gave you the most trouble?
Gloria Allred is a bottom-dweller. She gives legit trial attorneys – there are some – a bad name.
April 29th, 201111:46 am
Owl – And ESPN did nothing when informed? Seems to me they’d report it immediately, but then again, it was only the Braves and not the the Yankees/Red Sox involved.
I think we need to remember the Furcal DUIs. I don’t think there was any suspension from the Braves, but some stern talking to and rehab.
I don’t think Lowe will get suspended.
This is not the first alcohol related issue in his life.
April 29th, 201111:47 am
I love these shows they put on – “What The Earth Will Look Like When All Humans are Gone”.. And why would we care?
April 29th, 201111:48 am
I agree with you. DLowe was not scheduled to pitch until Sunday, so the issue last night was not setting up a “too drunk to pitch” situation.
But still, you said it better than I did!
Hope Braves front office hurrys up on both. If they let Rodger go I will be very disappointed with them.
flange – True, but that was pre Miguel Cabrera. Things might have more consequences this time around.
April 29th, 201111:49 am
Just an obsevation about Ours Two Braves Team (MLB-AAA)…look like we are playing better at the Road that at Home…Braves record: Away 9-8, Home 4-5, Gwinnett record Away 8-2 Home 8-7…
ESPN reports A-Rod having a hangnail. They would have reported this.
It was the ropes course.
Yeah, show him how catastrophic drinking and driving can be – demand that he renegotiate his 2012 contract!
April 29th, 201111:50 am
Will Gays protest outside the Ted? could well be.
MAybe it’s a moral conviction of this guy, or maybe he hopes to profit by it, Either way, the cost to my precious kids would be too great. At the very least I would have kept them far away from everything. Not this guy. So either he’s dumb as dirt and being manipulated by Alred or he doesn’t care about them if he somehow profits by it. I’m hoping he’s just plain dumb.
Mather is back. Hello Mather ! Good buy Ascencio………..Hey…Hey……Good buy…….
April 29th, 201111:51 am
Would you ever have thought the blog would be reading like this two days ago?
No. It looked like the blog was headed for a collision on what is the proper bullpen usage for number two hitters.
Also, Lowe is a former Red Sox. ESPN should have been all over this.
keylargo – I think the Player’s Assn. might have something to say about contract re-negotiation.
Well, I think you have to put the Lowe situation in the larger context of it happening on the heels of the McDowell controversy. I think the negative publicity from the McDowell situation can’t help Lowe.
Plus, tolerance for driving under the influence has become less and less with each passing year. Not only that, in Lowe’s case, if true, he wasn’t only under the influence but racing? It wasn’t as if Lowe was heading home from a dinner in his Honda Pilot and was pulled over and found inebriated.
I think he might get hit harder than Furcal. But that’s a pure guess.
April 29th, 201111:52 am
Where is richbrave with his minors updates? have not seen him past couple of days.
Yeah, show him how catastrophic drinking and driving can be…
Drag out victims of drunk driver accidents for a national press conference, re-enact the events for all to see and demand more than an apology, because quite simply, this level of production requires money.
April 29th, 201111:53 am
Lowe being a rebel,racing a car,big deal…..Move on……
What does that mean?
Ward, isn’t today your birthday?
I wonder what his BAC was. I personally think the limit should be raised. We all have our drunk driving horror stories with friends/family dying, but how often does the driver have a BAC of .09? It’s generally much higher.
The real concern here was the fact that Lowe was racing. That’s unacceptable sober. He should definitely lose his licence for some amount of time, but I hope he doesn’t miss any starts.
April 29th, 201111:55 am
From a news article about Raffy’s 2nd DUI:
Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal was arrested on drunken driving charges Friday, his second DUI arrest in four years and a potential distraction to a team trying to wrap up its 13th straight division title.
Furcal didn’t start Friday night’s game against Montreal, though the team planned no immediate disciplinary action. Manager Bobby Cox said his leadoff hitter could be back in the lineup Saturday.
“The embarrassment that I’m sure Raffy is suffering is felt by us all,” general manager John Schuerholz said. “We’re sorry it happened. It’s behind us now. Hopefully we can go on to battle for the division title.”
I’d be VERY surprised if Lowe didn’t start on Sunday.
I don’t think Lowe will miss a start and I also think that there’s a good chance McDowell loses his job. What does this say about where we are as a society? Lowe (alledgedly) commits a dangerous crime and will suffer minor professional consequences, while McDowell simply show poor judgment and bad taste and IMO will suffer much harsher penalties. I think this sets up to be just another example of bowing to the pathetic witch-hunting of the Politcal Correctness Police.
April 29th, 201111:56 am
“Lowe being a rebel,racing a car,big deal…..Move on……”
On Peachtree Road, I believe? Near Lenox, I guess? Oh, that’s okay.
April 29th, 201111:57 am
DOB, when are we going to start getting some news outta the Braves’ front office?
April 29th, 201111:59 am
Tommy T… your 11:55 is an excellent take.
April 29th, 201112:01 pm
Good post Tommy T
The big difference between Lowe and McDowell is the nature of their contracts. Lowe’s is protected by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Player’s Union. McDowell’s isn’t.
Unless there is some kind of clause in Lowe’s contract that criminal behavior can result in voiding the contract, Braves have to pay him and play him.

DOB on vacation Think Carroll here today.
April 29th, 201112:03 pm
Murph, what are you getting for the wife this Sunday?
Eric from MO
April 29th, 201112:04 pm
I dont have a problem with drinking, nor do I have a problem with drinking and driving as long as you are still fine to drive. I just dont understand why you just dont have a driver if you have made as much money as Lowe. Why put yourself in that situation? Kind of like when Pacman Jones kept getting in trouble at strip clubs. Why keep going and put yourself in that situation? If you need a stripper that bad have a private party. He has the money. Just like Lowe has the money for a driver. Why put yourself in that situation?
As for the ones who think the Braves will come down hard, you will be disappointed. It wasnt that long ago Furcal had I believe 3 of them(may of been 2 but I think 3). He will get a fine and some community service after the season and that will be it, and that is all he deserves.
April 29th, 201112:05 pm
Too much moral hand-wringing goin’ on here today for my tastes (what’s new).
You would think that some of the dudes, which I know frequent this blog – leaving much chatter, never had a few too many before getting behind the wheel. Not condoning it – just sayin’ DLowe seems to be a regular guy. He might be rich, but that doesn’t mean he ain’t got flaws.
April 29th, 201112:06 pm
Tommy T, while I agree political correctness probably has something to do with the possible or probable punishments, I also think the fact that McDowell is a coach and Lowe is a player has something to do with the possible or probable punishments. If Lowe had done what McDowell allegedly did, he’d probably be fined and suspended but he probably wouldn’t be in danger of losing his job. This is because coaches are more easily replaced than players.
Just saw someone posted it was two Furcal. I was mistaken. I still see nothing happening to Lowe.
DOB on vacation Think Carroll here today — LTBF
Classic. Spent 11 days on the road, first day off when back is “vacation.” LTBF, enjoy your Saturday-Sunday “vacation.” (That’s assuming you work Monday-Friday, and your weekly “vacation” days are Saturday-Sunday.)
April 29th, 201112:09 pm
abwright, that’s a good point, too, about the players’ union, player contracts, etc. Another factor in addition to political correctness and the fact that one is a player and the other a coach.
April 29th, 201112:11 pm
JMO I agree. In Missouri it is .08 Do people realize how low that is? A 120 pound woman could drink ONE Beer and be illegal. I guess thats why I don’t care when people get DUIs. They have made it no worse than a speeding ticket to me. Now if he was stumbling drunk, or didnt know where he was, that is a different story.

Classic. Spent 11 days on the road, first day off when back is “vacation.”
A glimpse of blog normalcy. A welcome breath of fresh air.
Please stop man. I think you really need some perspective. Enough.
AT – I’m not getting the wife anything this Sunday except maybe a smack on the butt as she makes my grilled cheese sandwich.
However, for the next Sunday, I do believe a spa day is in order. Funny that for mother’s day I give her a gift where the primary reward is a day away from her kids.
April 29th, 201112:14 pm
I see it’s another wild day on the ole blog.
Shaun – I totally agree that a manager is not a parent. These guys need to be responsible for their actions.
There’s a lot to wade through to get to the real facts of what has happened, especially in the McDowell case. That said, these are potentially serious charges, and I hope appropriate action is taken, once the facts are sorted out.The Braves organization is much bigger than any one individual.
That’s what all mothers want for Mother’s Day! You take care of the kids for her while she has a day off
April 29th, 201112:15 pm
JMO I do disagree on your second part. I drag race my old challenger all the time. I am not hurting a sole. Obviously I do it on roads that have no traffic after 7 pm. Where I race is a port and all the barge companies are closed and the road ends at the river, so no traffic. I am not familar with the Atlanta area so I do not know how busy Peach Tree Road is.
April 29th, 201112:17 pm
Murph, I stand corrected. I meant next weekend. What’s even more funny about your mother’s day gift is… she’s not even your mother. Don’t worry though, I’ve had to do a little shopping myself. Getting her a kindle, she’s been bugging me about one for quite some time.
DOB – I know the “vacation” comments must burn your butt, as they should. However, just try to “consider the source”, and know that most of us greatly appreciate the fine job you and Carroll do for us. There is no better sports blog available, IMO. (even with the “crazies”)
April 29th, 201112:19 pm
April 29th, 201112:20 pm
raleighbravefan… If true about Lowe, I don’t think he gets off easily. It’s too easy and too long ago to draw a strong parallel to Furcal’s trouble.
April 29th, 201112:21 pm
it could DAP.
April 29th, 201112:23 pm
DOB, during tax season (Jan 1- April 18) I get a vacation every Sunday, unless I have a ton of work to do. I can definitely relate. Everytime, someone says, “You can’t take off one Friday and Saturday?” I just want to punch them in the face.
April 29th, 201112:27 pm
Eric – Of course you’re not hurting a sole when you drag race your bike. Brakes have come a long way since The Flintstones.
Sorry Dude, couldn’t resist.
April 29th, 201112:54 pm
Reckless Driving is a major driving offense. It results in being ineligible by preferred companies. The DUI along with his violations says that he will be cancelled by his insurance carrier. Somehow, I suspect that he is probably with a high risk company now. I’m sure from what his history has been that he probably would not quallify for a Personal Liability Policy. The factor that is recorded in databases around the country by SS# & DL# will show that he not eligible also.

April 29th, 20111:39 pm
So glad I don’t have to worry about that yet….
You know what I am doing Mothers Day….
3 softball games
April 29th, 20111:43 pm
Very VERY doubtful as the insurance carrier will know that they could raise his premium a significant amount and he’d still be a viable client.
Hell, there was a guy in Missouri who had 8 DUI’s before his 9th one got his license permanently revoked.
April 29th, 20115:30 pm
at least he didn’t do a Joey Belle or a Ty Cobb
April 29th, 20115:38 pm
