Braves 2011 Opening Day lineup vs. Nationals

I hope this lineup works out. McClouth should see some pitches having Chipper behind him, if he struggles, he can be moved. Heyward batting 6th gives his powerful bat a much greater chance of driving in some runs. I like it so far. Only time will tell.

Happy opening day, everyone! DOB, thank you and Carroll for an off-season of brilliant coverage, and thanks to all of you who comment so faithfully and passionately about the Braves.
Here is my newest art-piece, depicting Brian McCann, in celebration of the new season. I hope you all enjoy it!
I thought Chipper had to sit out a game after his ejection while on the DL last year.

March 31st, 20119:45 am
I think Heyward should be batting #2 behind Prado. Prado is a high OBP guy and so is Heyward and Jones. those three are more likely to string consecutive hits together.
Heyward hitting in front of Gonzalez is a mistake I think. Pitchers will probably throw Heyward junk and take their chances with Gonzalez. (while he’s no slouch, but he can be pitched to and handled)
I’m guessing Freddi is thinking that Prado will get on, and he can bunt him over any time with McLouth and Chipper will bring him in with his patent single.
Despite the line up not being where I would like, its still good and the team will do well. (there’s a reason I’m not a ML Manager)
March 31st, 20119:46 am
I kind of forgot about that, and I’m guessing MLB did too.. That was a question at the end of the season that never got answered.

March 31st, 201110:07 am
Someone please tell Fredi to bat Heyward 2nd….PLEASE!!
March 31st, 201110:09 am
man…we look solid.
March 31st, 201110:19 am
I’ve been against batting J-Hey 6th from the beginning but I do understand what Fredi is thinking. In addition to the Righty/Lefty all the way down the lineup – batting McLouth 2nd will get him more pitches to hit and with his new “aggressive” attitude at the plate we’ve all heard so much about this Spring this will give him a better chance to start strong and build his confidence early on. On the flip side, pitchers will no doubt pitch around J-Hey when he’s batting 6th because Gonzo behind him is a DP waiting to happen. Fredi must have confidence in Jason’s eagle eye to layoff those junk pitches outside the zone…All that said I just can’t see Fredi batting J-Hey that low in the order all season – he’s just too good of a hitter/baserunner to be batting that low.
March 31st, 201110:21 am
Chipper hits for extra bases, Heyward has a good day, and Lowe allows no more than 2 runs. Count on it
Jimmy, age 9
March 31st, 201110:25 am
How come Jordan Schafer isn’t playing centerfield? He’s my favorite player.
March 31st, 201110:26 am
Come on, 1 o’clock. Get here soon.
I’m so excited about this season. I was excited last year, but I am more so this year. This team really has a lot of potential. I sure hope this is the year the Braves make the Phillies fans cry into their cheesesteaks.
March 31st, 201110:30 am
I am excited, hopefully the game can get in and be played
March 31st, 201110:31 am

March 31st, 201110:50 am
42 degrees and rainy predicted for game time. Hardly ideal conditions for baseball, but Braves baseball all the same and I’ll take it. Go Braves!
p.s. – I hope the team remembered to pack their warm mock-turtlenecks, etc. for the trip.
March 31st, 201110:53 am
Let’s assume that’s all been resolved already, but in case it has not, Sshhhhhhhhh! :^)

March 31st, 201111:02 am
I don’t like batting McCann 4th. Too many double play grounders to kill potential big innings.
Bat Heyward 4th & McCann 6th.
BILLY THE KID
March 31st, 201111:06 am
anyone have any tips where I can listen online? The radio stations don’t stream the Braves they mostly have replays of other shows etc. Any help please!
March 31st, 201111:07 am
What needs to happen is McLouth needs to become the leadoff man we haven’t had since Grissom or Otis. Flip him and Prado and that’s a pretty good lineup.
March 31st, 201111:10 am
@NCBravesFan: thanks, dude! that’s really kind of you to say!
I agree with Heyward at cleanup and McCann 6th. I bet we see it at some point this season.
March 31st, 201111:11 am
@Billy the Kid: here’s the site I use for online radio broadcasts – at least one of the sites usually comes through for me. That’s how I’ll be getting the game today, since for whatever reason, DC games are blacked out here in NC.
March 31st, 201111:16 am
Eksito na nos Bravos. Good luck to our Braves!
March 31st, 201111:17 am
Jimmy is stupid
March 31st, 201111:18 am
Looks really nice. If you had shown that to me at the end of last year, I might be somewhat disappointed, but with the performance this Spring makes me excited so the season start.
what’s the weather like there DOB/ Carroll?
Starring Kam Fong as Chin Ho
March 31st, 201111:19 am
I would flip AGon and Freeman to give Freeman some protection, but I like the look of this team. PLAY BALL already.

March 31st, 201112:01 pm
Paul F and Bill TK, I can’t remember if you can get 680 out of Atlanta on game days but try it. Last year I found a stream out of a South Carolina station and an Alabama station that might help.
Transplant brave – I think it is on Fox Sports South, on my tv it is Turner Sports South.
March 31st, 201112:11 pm
What time is game time? I thought it was 12:05, but Rock 100.5 isn’t broadcasting it yet and usually they do.
March 31st, 201112:12 pm
nevermind, I see it’s 1:05. (at myself).
March 31st, 201112:16 pm
Where can you watch the game online? I’m stuck at work
HAPPY OPENING DAY BRAVES FANS!!!!!! This looks like a good lineup…we’ll see how it works very soon. With Lowe on the mound, he’s going to need some run support!
March 31st, 201112:17 pm
MLB Opening Day should be a National Holiday!
March 31st, 201112:21 pm
DOB, any reason why Nate doesnt lead off when he is the only base stealing threat we have? Prado is not a leadoff hitter, & would be perfect in the 2 hole. Thanks & Go Bravos
March 31st, 201112:28 pm
Ahhhh! Opening Day! It’s finally here!
Time for an adult beverage as I sit back and watch grown men play with hard balls!

Everyone quit trying to make their own lineup! Trust in Fredi, and support your 2011 Atlanta Braves! Let’s go get ‘em Braves!!!
The Living Legend
March 31st, 201112:32 pm
I vote to send “c’mon man” to AA with KK.
Enough of Heyward as the best player ever !! What did he hit last year .270 ? He had an average year, and on many occasions looked totaly lost in the field. Come on, I hope he hits .320, with 30 Hrs’s but he hasn’t yet ,so stop it already(I hope he does it this year, starting today) Go Braves
March 31st, 201112:42 pm
Chipper batting 3rd? Oh man, when will they give the guy (and us) a break. God bless him, but Chipper is not the guy he was 5 years ago. Plus, he’ll be sitting out at least once a week, which will screw up the order. Stick him back at 6th, and move J-Hey up to 3rd – a batting spot that needs power, contact, and speed.
Otherwise, GO BRAVES!

whoooohoooo watching the braves @ work on opening day!!!!!
March 31st, 201112:44 pm
He actually had better than an “average” year for a rookie, and a 20 year old at that. However, I do see your point. Let’s hold of on making “great’ comparisions just yet people. He still has a ways to go, and much to learn. It is another 5-6 years before he even begins his “prime years” in this game. He is a great talent though, and has great potential, but so did Todd Van Poppel and Chipper’s buddy Tyler Houston.
March 31st, 201112:46 pm
I love Chipper, but I think the “3″ spot should be J-Hey’s. Once Chipper is gone, that is where J-Hey will settle in…he is a natural fit there. If Chipper struggles, he should politely move down the line-up and let J-Hey slide into his appropriate slot.
Wow, is there a team with a better #8 hitter situation? I like Freeman there…he will get walked a LOT.
March 31st, 201112:47 pm
There is no sports event like Opening Day of baseball, the sense of beating back the forces of darkness and the National Football League.
March 31st, 201112:48 pm
Why does Heyward have to be either a #2 hitter as a table-setter or a #6 hitter as a run-producer? He should be both and should be hitting either 3rd or 4th.

2011 – yes, and usually the first game is on Sunday night and “opening day” is a Monday. Selig is trying to confuse us.
PROVIDED McLouth has a .400 OBP, Gonzo hits 15 – 20 HR’s, and Chipper plays in 140 games and hits .300 again…I love this lineup. Especially the lack of pressure of Freeman. He could have 80 RBI’s in the 8 spot.
March 31st, 20111:00 pm
the game is on 649 Directv
March 31st, 20111:01 pm
let the games begin folks it’s OPENING DAY FINALLY
Right on DAM. J-Hey should be guaranteed to bat in the first inning in the 3 slot. He hits for power and gets on base…why put him batting 6th? To me, it means 1 of 2 things: 1) Team still wants him to “pay” his dues. Or 2) They are babying him along, trying to not have a replay of Frenchy.
March 31st, 20111:02 pm
Look at the batting order. Even the best pitchers will have a hard time getting #3 thru # 6 out.
When Fredi rests Chipper I bet he puts Heyward in the 3 hole against a righty, the 2 hole against a lefty. When McCann needs to sit, Heyward might hit cleanup against a righty, fifth against a lefty. DO NOT DESPAIR. It is great to have a kid that can hit just about anywhere in the lineup.

“Baseball is made up of very few big and dramatic moments, but rather it’s a beautifully put together pattern of countless little subtleties that finally add up to the big moment, and you have to be well-versed in the game to truly appreciate them.”–Paul Richards
Ok, I ate at my desk. Time to go down to the parking deck, get in my car, and listen to the Braves for my lunch hour!

There’s absolutely no way to justify giving McLouth more at-bats than Heyward. It makes one wonder if the new manager has any idea what he’s doing…
