LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – While Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy and Rodrigo Lopez battle for the fifth starter spot in the Braves’ rotation, the man who vacated it is making steady progress toward his return.
Kris Medlen threw off the mound Tuesday for the first time since his Aug. 18 ligament-transplant elbow surgery, aka “Tommy John” surgery. He threw 15 pitches in the bullpen, at what was supposed to be about 50-percent exertion.

Braves were 13-1 in Kris Medlen's starts in 2010, before season-ending ebow surgery. (Brant Sanderlin photo/AJC)
“Didn’t have the feel for [pitches], but the arm felt great,” he said. “All the stuff I’ve been doing has been working.”
You will probably not be surprised to learn that the irrepressible, always-upbeat, frequently hilarious 25-year-old with the “fauxhawk” haircut hasn’t been worn down by the tedium of rehab.
He credits teammates who’ve been through the same surgery, especially Tim Hudson and Peter Moylan, with helping him keep things in perspective and avoid worrying about the various rehab stages and aches and pains along the way.
“It’s huge,” Medlen said. “Before I even knew if I was going to need it, Huddy was like, dude, I’ve seen this a bunch of times…. They were there before I even needed it.”
And they’ve been there since he had it. Any time Medlen has a concern or wonders if this twinge or that soreness is normal, he can barely get the question out before one of the Braves’ T.J. surgery veterans — Jonny Venters is another – has the reassuring reply.
He’s a few days from the seven-month point in a rehab that usually requires 12 months, give or take a month.
“It’s been somewhat easy from the get-go,” Medlen said, referring to the mental part of dealing with surgery and rehab. “I mean, instead of having nobody there to talk to or anything, I’ve had all these guys.
“They talk about the tightness [in the post-surgery elbow]. The tightness isstill be there, but it’s still healing. They just reassure me that everything’s good.
“Some of the guys have said that even when they came back and were throwing, they still had that little bit of tightness in there. It’s just something you’ve got to deal with. It goes away with time, but like I said, it’s reassuring to have guys to talk to who’ve been through it.”
Much has been said about injuries that slowed the Braves after the All-Star break, and at the top of the list are usually the season-ending injuries to Chipper Jones and Martin Prado.
Ask around in the clubhouse, however, and players will invariably include Medlen’s elbow injury in the short list of key injuries that reduced their chances at the NL East title.
Medlen was 5-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts last season, and the Braves had a stunning 13-1 record in his starts.
Although he said his rehab’s been relatively “easy” because of the support and advice he’s received from his teammates who’ve been through, he also conceded that there have been plenty of times where it’s been brutal.
“Yeah, I mean, sitting through that two months and the playoffs and just knowing how I am – I mean, I definitely wanted to be in there,” he said. “And seeing the No. 5 spot battle [this spring] … Whoever gets the spot, Beachy, Minor or Lopez, is obviously going to be a good choice, because I know they’re all doing pretty well this spring.”
But…
“You know, I think it’s my spot,” he said, “just that they’re battling for it. It’s unfortunate that I’m not there to battle with them for it.”
The rehab plan has him on schedule to return sometime between mid-August to September, though it’s impossible to pinpoint a date at this stage. When he returns, the Braves could use him in a bullpen role if all of their starters are healthy and pitching well.
I asked Medlen about that, whether he’d be cool with any role in his return. He answered rather artfully.
“Yeah,” he said. “But I had some success as a starter, and we were winning when I pitched. I like winning.
“Of course it’d be cool to come back as a starter. I’m going to rehab as a starter. But if whoever is in the fifth spot is dealing, why change anything? Of course I’m open to whatever they want me to do.”
♣ Glavine in broadcast booth: I’m hearing that Tom Glavine is going to have a more extensive role in the Braves’ TV booth this season. I’m told that he’ll work as analyst (with Braves fixture Joe Simpson moving over from analyst work to do play-by-play) on an undetermined number of the Peachtree TV games that are being produced this year by Fox Sports South. Expect an announcement soon.
Braves lineup
♣ OK, we’ve got to get this posted. Not much time today to write this blog, because of the major news about Luis Salazar and the unsuccessful attempts by surgeons to save his eye. There’s a separate on that posted on the blog page.
You already probably know that Jason Heyward is out of the lineup again with back stiffness, the fifth consecutive game he’s missed. Today’s 1:05 p.m. game against the Red Sox is on ESPN, so expect the ESPN guys to talk plenty about it.

Heyward isn't playing today for Bravos, but David Ortiz (above) is in Red Sox lineup.
The Braves again said it’s not serious, and Heyward again took batting practice and other pregame drills.
Braves GM Frank Wren said this about the situation: “Just spring soreness. Everybody goes through it in one form or another, and one body part or another, or multiple body parts. It’s just spring soreness. We all go through it.”
One other thing: Freddie Freeman was in the initial lineup today as DH, but was scratched. No healthy issues there; Brian McCann just needed to get some at-bats against a lefty, and the Red Sox are starting lefty Jon Lester today.
Let’s close with a Nick Cave/Grinderman tune from the sublime Grinderman 2 album. You can see them do it live here.
“HEATHEN CHILD” by Grinderman
Hey little momo
Light as a rainbow,
Heavy as an asteroid
Crashed in the bathtub
Yeah, sitting in the bathtub
Hair full of her fingers
Hair full of her fingers
Yeah, sitting in the bathtub
Says, “I’m scared and lonely”
Sweet little momo says,
“I’m scared and lonely”
Here come the wolfman
Hey little momo
Saying, “hey little momo”
Saying, “hey little momo”
Sitting in the bathtub
My heathen child
She’s a heathen child
Yeah, she’s a heathen child
Yeah, she’s a real wild child
She got a little powder
She got a little gun
She got a little poison
Got a little gun
Sitting in the bathtub
Sucking her thumb
Says, “I don’t care about Buddha
[Don’t] care about Krishna
Don’t care about Allah
Don’t care about anything”
Just sitting in the bathtub,
Sucking her thumb…
Cuz she’s a heathen child
Yeah, she’s a heathen child
Now she’s a heathen child
Yeah, she’s a real wild child

Clearly Hanson does not belong in the rotation and should be released for giving up that homer to a leadoff hitter. He is absolutely in the same boat as KK. Maybe we could package the two of them to the Cardinals for Albert Pujols if Wren does not agree to release them.

In regards to Brooks Conrad, if Bobby Cox was still here, I would say that Conrad would have to slap Wren to lose his job. But, there’s a new sheriff in town and Conrad has not shown anything this spring. He has been soundly outplayed by both Diory and Lucas and at some point, spring training has to mean something to these kids who are trying to making the team. As for Mather, I put him in the same boat as Schafer. He is supposed to be healthy, but he isn’t showing the ability that he is believed to have. No Ramirez hasn’t proven himself to be anything other than a career minor leaguer, but at some point, lets take a chance and see what happens. Waive Mather. It’s not like the team will lose anything by dumping him. Go with Young, Ramirez, Diory, Lucas, and Hinske and see how it all pans out. Opinions are something aren’t they?

I can understand about Chipper. I do joke and call him the glassman, but he’s been playing this game hard for many years. His baseball body is almost 39 and nagging injuries are going to happen….Heyward, on the other hand, is a very young man in good condition. If Heyward is this oft injured at his young age, what’s going to happen when he gets into his 30s, provided he makes it that far?

DOB really does a good job announcing. I bet most of y’all didn’t know he works part time at ESPN too.
Here’s some of his accolades according to Wikipedia.
From 1987 to 1992 he called play-by-play for Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves as well as college football and basketball games for Georgia and Miami, garnering the Georgia Associated Press’ “Best Sports Play-by-Play” accolade in 1988 and 1991. O’Brien then broadcast for the Florida Marlins from the team’s inaugural year in 1993 through 2001, including their first World Series win in 1997.
I don’t know how he does one job much less two.

Now, if by the all star break we are making a good run (which I’m sure we will be), and we have some glaring weakness that needs to be addressed, perhaps then pitching would have been traded. But I think that will happen with or without Medlen.

These guys are competing for jobs. That’s why they’re playing various positions. Mather is likely to make the club, and they want to see him play CF to know how solid a backup he’d be out there.

Finally had a chance to read the actual blog. Good read and glad to hear that Medlen is holding up.
It also makes you appreciate Tommy John, who had to go through this surgery and rehab all by himself. At the time, blowing out the ligament was a guaranteed career ender. TJ did the surgery and the rehab fighting against the head-winds of the nay-sayers at the time.
“Cut Tommy! He’ll never pitch again.”
Well, TJ showed ‘em.

AT, I’m considering starting a new RttS and going in as a 7 foot tall pitcher named El Guapo Mitchell. A lefty with a lot of heat but not a very good feel for the strikezone yet.
Might be more entertaining than hitting 4 grounders to the 2nd baseman and throwing to wrong base 5 times a game.

The Cayman is basically the Boxster Coupe. It gets about 10 more BHP and starts around $52,000 retail. The Boxster is a rag top roadster and starts about $47,000.In this economy you can often find either one a bit cheaper than that. I’m not a ragtop fan anyway, but i think the Cayman is much more dramatic looking. US NEWS & World Report ranked the Cayman as the #1 Luxury sports car I think

Here is the deal with the Phillies. When they signed “whats-his-name”, the media (well, ESPN) gave them the title. But is doesn’t work that way. They are riddle with injuries, haven’t replaced Werth and their staring second baseman hasn’t even played one ST game.
The Phils may win it all this year. But they haven’t yet. They have alot of big name pitchers, but that don’t win games. Good pitching wins games. And at this point, the Braves starters have looked pretty good.

I see the Phillies as being another version of the 90’s Braves. Great rotation with a supporting cast that will get them just enough runs to win with. They don’t need Werth or Utley to win. They have enough offense to get the job done. We’ll have a rotation that’s not as good as the Philles, but a pretty good one none-the-less. Our bullpen should be better and deeper than the Phillies, but how much bullpen are the Phillies gonna need seriously. Their defense is better, but with Freeman at first and Prado in left, they represent a huge upgrade, but Uggla needs to improve defensively. I wish we still had Hubbard. He worked wonders. Offensively, we might be a little better than the Phils, but not by enough to matter. In the end, we still have to prove that we can beat them during the course of the season. Not an easy thing to do, but it’ll be interesting to watch how it all unfolds.

I was wondering the same thing – splitting groundball guys with a K guy. Huddy at 3 seems wrong after his 2010 season. Giving him the home opener might temper that a bit. But a good looking rotation anyway you look at it (as long as JJ gets back to a semblance of the 2009 form).

I know I’m late piping in with this, but, I know Martin’s shift to lead-off was important, but the Braves’ surge last May directly coincided with Medlen’s joining the starting rotation. I can’t quote all the specific dates anymore from memory, but the Braves were playing under .500 until just about the exact date that Medlen made his first start. His good work settled down the pitching staff and the team started winning.
Then again, later in the year, yes, when Martin got hurt in Cincinnati, the Braves had a drop-off, but again, the Braves were truely hurting for the lack of Medlen’s steady pressence at the back end of the rotation.
Martin was big, but i still think it was Medlen who made the real difference and had the Braves in 1st place most of last season.

I didn’t see but a few minutes of the game today and that brief period happened to be the time frame you spoke of.
I’ve always admired the passion McCann plays with and am enjoying seeing his career blossom, along with his growing leadership role on the team. However, I do hope that same passion/feeling doesn’t cause him to dwell on his part in the accident in any way and he can do whatever he needs to do ,(or talk to whomever he needs to talk to) in order to put it behind him. IMO this is one of those cases where no one is to blame, a true accident.

I agree. It’s going to be in the back of BMac’s mind for the rest of his life, I’m sure. But I also think that he is a strong person who cann continue to go about his playing—the way Coach Salazar would want it. But it will never go away completely, I don’t think.

@haggard — Hal Blaine and James Burton are both legends. And I have always been deeply in love with Emmylou Harris since I first saw her live at the Fox in the early 1970’s. I didn’t like John Denver at all back in the day. For awhile in the 70’s, the radio was filled with the 3 “Johns”: Elton, Olivia Newton-, and Denver and it seemed very bland. However, in retrospect, I really began to appreciate his beautiful crystal-clear voice and there are a couple of old PBS specials that stand out, one, I believe, recorded at Red Rocks.
I think his nerdy good-ole country boy act put off a lot of people to his true talents as a singer and interpreter of great songs. Listen to the albums “Back Home Again” or “Greatest Hits Vol.2″, specifically the songs I’m Sorry, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Back Home Again, My Sweet Lady, and This Old Guitar, and ignore the novelty songs and you can begin to appreciate what a true talent he was.
And, of course, a lot of this didn’t come to me until he was gone and now I miss him a lot and would love to hear something new from that wonderful voice. IMHO.

I was at that show. Drove up from school in Macon to see it. If you want to go further back, isn’t it something that Burton and Glen D. Hardin were both members of Elvis Presley’s band. As a kid I owned a couple of Presley singles, (U.S Male was one), but I didn’t give him a serious listen as an adult until about ten years ago after finishing Peter Guralnick’s two volume set about his life; Last Train To Memphis and Careless Love.
And about Emmylou; I loved her Nash Ramblers with Sam Bush and Roy Husky, Jr. during the 90’s. And, during the late 70’s, both Ricky Skaggs and Rodney Crowell were ‘Hot Band’ members. Lady sure can pick the pickers !

We were there……and he did NOT. Now…..it was a very lackadaisical swing BUT he didn’t just stand there. Then there was the day the MLBN announcers were calling Conrad “Uggla” at second base. You’d be surprised how many “closet” Denver fans there are out there and I believe my two favorite studio albums are “Spirit” and “Autograph”, while, IMO, ‘The Wildlife Concert’ is probably the best example of a mature Denver.
One of the best concerts I saw was Denver–by himself with his trusty Taylor–on the stage of the Fox Theater. He was one talented guitarist as well and I like the way his voice aged.

TY. That ‘The Wildlife Concert’ was the other one I was trying to remember. Agreed he was a much better musician than given credit for and he wrote some beautiful and great songs, but it’s the novelty songs that still get the most attention.
I saw Emmylou (my second favorite singer behind Nanci Griffith) every time she came to Atlanta in the 70s – 90s, including The Fox and The Great Southeast Music Hall, so we were probably at some of the same shows. Small world, sometimes. At least Emmylou has received the credit and acclaim she has deserved for her diverse music, her ability to surround herself with the best musicians, and her sheer creativity. She is in the Country Music HOF and most certainly belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, too.

After they both did some stand-up, they asked the crowd to follow them, and they led us all the way down to the Bowling Alley at the other end of the strip mall, and proceeded to do a whole show on the bowling lanes with balls, balloons, arrows, etc. and it was hilarious. According to the spring schedule I have, tomorrow’s game is in fact at 6:05 EST but Friday’s is at 12:05 not 1:05…perhaps DOB knows for sure? (and yes, both games are listed as being on MLBN- doesn’t mean they will be live, but they will be there at some point)

So Heyward has some kind of disk/vertebrae issue causing his back problem.
Do you know anything about that DOB? — Bat Masterson
No, I don’t. And neither did the GM when Bowman asked him after the game (because someone on his desk had heard the same thing you did on the ESPN broadcast). Heyward apparently told Buster that he was told he has less cartilage between a couple of vertebrae than most people do, something like that.
It’s first that any of us have heard of that.

Yeah…..I heard the same thing…..that Heyward “couldn’t” hurt it any more by playing, Just Pat
I heard the same thing. The first thing I thought was that if there was a way to make it worse, Heyward would find it. I just don’t know about this kid. He has star written all over him, but he’s never gonna set any records for playing every game.

How on earth do the ESPN guys get news ahead of the Braves GM and the beat guys? And if he did see a doctor, why didnt he inform the team first. Guess we got to be happy Heyward didnt just tweet the news to everyone instead.

Glad to read that Medlen is on track. I really still that Medlen is more valuable out of the pen than in the rotation. I think Medlen’s got the stuff and grit to be a solid set up man or closer. I think by late summer, Venters and Kimbrel could use a little relief themselves. Hopefully, Medlen’s back.

Yeah, I thought it was odd to hear it first during an in-game interview. Hell DOB is on top of everything. What did Heyward do sneak away to a doctor last night or this morning, and not tell someone, like maybe the boss. Maybe he gets house calls.

At first take, you’d think maybe this was something Braves’ management didn’t want to announce simply to avoid the crush of questions and to see if it would become a non-issue.
And I hope it still does, chalked up under the “He’s Young” category.

We already discussed the bench players, so what about the bullpen? Even though Kimbrel hasn’t gotten into a groove yet, I think he and Venters will share closing duties for the time being with Moylan and Eric O’Flaherty being the other setup type guys. Martinez will remain the long inning man. That leaves more spots. Linebrink and Sherrill haven’t exactly been impressive but have shown glimpses of the old stuff. Personally, the last spots are a crapshoot with Asencio, Abreu, and Marek doing well during the spring and Proctor looking decent at times. What do you guys think?

By the way, I wasn’t a regular watcher the first five years it was on, but have been catching up during the last two through USA network marathons. The episodes with Detective David Morse,(don’t remember his character’s name) were good, as were the ones with the 100million dollar benefactor tossing his weight around for the longest time. Not sure any studies have been done in that particular area of “training”. I see him as around a 3 starter, Nolie. Maybe because he came right along with Hanson, but it seemed that he was hardly noticed when he came up. Everything was Hanson. It seems like in people’s mind he is a #5 starter. I think he very well could be better than that. He really hasn’t had enough time in MLB to show what he can do. I know why it was handled the way it was, but I hated to see him start a couple of games and then be sent to the pen. It is my understanding that it was when they changed him from a rp to a sp that he began to shine in the minors. Ideally, he needed time as a starter in MLB rather than in the pen.

My ex and most of my GFs have said the same.

I have never been privy to seeing the pitchers much in the minors. I would only get glimpses every now and then and hear reports. And from those, I would get a feeling about them. Or maybe I never saw him fulfilling the potential.

People still gripe about Wren overpaying Lowe as well as both years Vazquez was traded (to the Braves and to the Yanks). It is true that Lowe was over paid, but Wren had to do what he did. I can even see why he felt the need to get KK, though I was surprised that he did that. It did not seem necessary to me at the time, yet KK did help the team his first year. Pitching had to be upgraded. It was a must and Wren upgraded as much as he possibly could with what was available.

And he’s completely vulnerable against right-handers off what I saw. His style appears to be to pitch going away from lefty’s, and into the happy zone for righty’s. He didn’t show me he could use both sides of the plate, just the left side, and not particularly effective there. I’m not favorably impressed at this point. Haven’t seen him work before. Maybe he was better in other appearances. Willing to change my mind when I see better outings however.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone. DOB must have been celebrating early as he must be passed out on the Blarney Stone and is no where to be found. Didn’t even post a daily sunrise pic. That’s alright rest up Dave you deserve it.
I see everyone is revealing how young they are so I’m a yong 35 years old. CraZy I agree with ya and the not being able to get pass out drunk anymore as each year passes. With 2 kids age 8 and 11 and having to work 5-6 days a week and recovery time going from a few hours the next day to 2-3 days later it becomes very hard to drink like we did when we were in our 20’s. Like they say older and wiser so when we do go out and drink pacing ourselves is the key.
Heh,heh, heh, growing up I see. Just wait ’till you’re sixty eight. Hey, I can’t BE the elder statesman on this blog. When I started in 2007, there were plenty of people that sweemed older than I. GIL……..little help.

Just two things: 1. “Just spring soreness”???? Hoodahell is HE kidding? “spring soreness” doe4snt last FIVE DAYS unless you have been sitting around all winter inhaling bon-bons. As much as I like Heyward, he seems destined to replace Chipper as the resident sick bay resident.
2. “Brian McCann just needs some at bats against lefties”, so you sit the rookie who ALSO needs those at bats?? Is Bobby Cox still pulling these strings? Brian has hit lefties and has a couple of years facing major league lefties. If Freeman is the first baseman of the future, wouldn’t HE need those at bats more than BeeMac?
God, I sure hope these guys don’t pan out like they are looking like they might.
Loads of major league talent, managed by minor league decisions.

1) Braves announced concert series for the summer, and I bet you wish DOB was here to give his musical analysis on it. All I can say is I’m especially excited for the first group announced – the Avett Brothers on April 10,….Yacht Revue on May 30….and going retro with Athens’ own B-52s on July 16…..The Braves will hold another concert on Sept. 17, band to be announced.

bigchieffrg I agree with you guys about Sherrill but I think he has a lot higher upside then being just situational. As recently as ‘09, he was lights out to both Lefties and Righties.
in ‘09 righties OPSed almost .700 against him, more than twice as high as lefties. while .700 isnt really high, i wouldnt call it “lights out”.
in fact, i can only find one year in his entore career (2007) where he was really good against righties, and in his career he has given up a .800 OPS to righties. no, i think his ceiling is a lights out LOOGY, and a risk doing anything else.

AT, nope, didn’t get to even turn the PS3 on… did you play at all?
I am starting to think the secret to hitting is to guess high heat with every pitch (someone on here said that a while ago). If you guess high and guess fastball then you’ll set yourself up well because a) you’ll know if you need to sit heater or offspeed and b) if it’s not in the upper third you know to look low or take the pitch completely.
I’m going to try and get on tonight and test that out to see if it improves my hitting fortunes at all.

Atlanta shifts into position
March, 17, 2011Mar 178:08AM ETEmailPrintCommentsBy Buster OlneyLAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — A scout watched him move around left field for a couple of games and came away impressed by Martin Prado, who shifted from the infield after Atlanta acquired Dan Uggla. “Like a duck taking to water,” the scout said.
From Prado’s point of view, the change hasn’t been easy. Rather, it has been a product of months of work because outfielders run differently than infielders, and they throw differently, and of course, there is a different mindset. Some infielders who have shifted to the outfield complain about the tedious pace and how they miss being close to the central flow of the game action.
But Prado embraced the shift in December, when he and his personal trainer started going to the Braves’ spring training complex. The trainer would hit him one fly ball after another, without tipping him off as to where he was aiming the ball, and Prado would take off in pursuit — using longer strides, he explained, rather than the short, quick steps of an infielder.
And he spent more time long-tossing, to extend his arm action. Middle infielders will often propel the ball with a quick flick of the wrist, without the extension, to release rapidly, to get the ball to a fellow infielder to start the double play. As a left fielder, Prado has to make longer, more powerful throws, using his shoulder more than he would while playing second base. “It was about two months before I was comfortable,” Prado said.
There are still three aspects of playing in the outfield that concern him:
1. He continues to learn how to charge a ball hit in front of him and how to use his feet in the approach.
2. He wants a better feel for the line drive hit right at him. Recently, he was playing against the Cardinals, positioned deep, and Matt Holliday mashed a ball over his head. Prado felt afterward that he had misjudged the ball. “That’s something I have to learn,” he said. Almost all outfielders will tell you that the toughest ball for them to read is the line drive smashed right at them.
3. Prado’s experience in the outfield this spring has been exclusively in day games, and he wants to learn more about catching liners and fly balls in night games, in which he’ll have to combat the glare of the lights. Prado could get his first shot tonight, actually, when the Braves play host to the Tigers, in a game that starts at 6 ET.
Chipper Jones has had an excellent spring playing third base, and the Braves have other infield options — Diory Hernandez has been impressive — but the presumption is that if Jones went down Prado could be an option to shift to third base. So a couple of times a week, he is taking grounders in the infield … just in case.
Anyone have the insider link for this??

You would not have liked having me for a neighbor then. Every year on New Years and the 4th a buddy and I would drive over to Alabama and drop about 11 or 12 hundred bucks on the best fireworks you could find,( and the guy would throw in and $150 or so) damn good ones. Then a big party at my house that night, we would set up out in the street and blow stuff up for hours, big fun.
All that was illegal in Georgia however. One New Years after we had finished setting everything off and where cleaning up a cop drove up and said he had some complaints and we had better stop. So I said sure, then he starting laughing and said, by the way i enjoyed the show and drove off. He had been sitting at the top of the hill watching until we finished.

Richbrave Only 61-62 but with so many hard miles on me, I feel 82 most mornings… Thank God for AOL where we can all perpetually be 23….
I got to see O’Flarerty pitch twice while at spring training last week. One thing I noticed was that he hides the ball well behind his head when he delivers a pitch. That adds a wee bit of deception in the speed of the ball as the batter has to react quicker to it. 92-92 looks like 95-96. He still has some control issues but nothing serious I don’t think.
Brandon Beachy is the bomb…. I really like that kid, great poise and no hamstring issues for him ever. He can actually high kick to the point that his foot is even to the top of his head. Maybe even double jointed to be able to do that.
Jair, while he pitched okay, did not impress me. Not sure what it is. My eyes see something but my brain has not made the connection yet. Just did not right….

I told him I didn’t know I had arthritis in my back to start with…. Needless to say, it does not bode well for Heyward to be having back problems at such an early age. Doing more damage or not, sometimes your body makes you react in ways which are totally involuntary. If he thinks his thumb gives him pause, just wait until that lightning bolt rushes down his spine after a big swing. Yeehaw…. He will be flipping around like a tuna on a gaff.

So you can always say, “I became a Braves fan back when Bobby Cox was manager”, just as UGA football fans reference so many important dates in their life with, “Back when Herschel was at Georgia”.

IMO the best firework released during the past twenty years is the golf ball-sized charge–with the long fuse–that’s launched out of a PVC type, three inch tube.
haggard_
Yeah, I’m familiar. You can get them stacked, two or three balls, together. Really cool. And the box type, 16 up to maybe 32 , in one ……. light the fuse and get back……boom, boom, boom, on and on. Those boxes where not cheap $ 80 and up each, but big fun.

So if Freddie Freeman were to post a season of, say…, .277 with 18 homeruns and 77 RBI with an OBP of around, oh, .360. Then throw in 25 or so doubles. Would you be pleased with the rookie’s season?
Minus the doubles and OBP, those are Heyward’s stats from last year. Of course–without the bothersome thumb–his stats would have been truly eye catching.
But back to Freeman, would those be realistic numbers for him? I’m thinking “yes”, though the home run total may be generous by 3 or 4.

Gather round ye lads and lasses
Set ye for awhile
And hearken to me mournful tale about the Emerald Isle
Let’s all raise our glasses high to friends and family gone
And lift our voices in another Irish drinking song
Consumption took me mother and
Me father got the pox
Me brother drank the whiskey till he wound up in a box
Me other brother in the troubles met with his demise
Me sister has forever closed her smiling Irish eyes
Now everybody’s died
So, until our tears have dried
We’ll drink and drink and drink and drink and then we’ll drink some more
We’ll dance and sing and fight until the early morning light
Then we’ll throw up, pass out, wakeup, and then go drinking once again

My two older brothers,(they were old enough to know better),and I made the mistake one year of setting the launcher on a card table so we wouldn’t have to reach down to light the fuse. We had three lined up in a row and the one thing we forgot was to tape the bases with duct tape . So, when the first one launched it shook the table so hard the other two pipes fell on their sides, still live, and sent our crowd of merrymakers scurrying for cover but quick !

The road rose up to meet him when he fell out of his car
Irony was what befell me great grand-uncle Sam
He choked upon the very last potato in the land
Conner lived in Ulster town
He used to smuggle arms
Until the British killed him
And cut off his lucky charms
And dear old father Flannigan who left the Lord’s employ
Drunk on sacramental wine beneath the alter boy
Now everybody’s died
So, until our tears have dried

We’ll dance and sing and fight until the early morning light
Then we’ll throw up, pass out, wakeup, and then go drinking once again
Someday soon I’ll leave this world of pain and toil and sin
The Lord will take me by the hand to join all of me kin
Me only wish is when the savior comes for me and you
He kills the cast of river dance and Michael Flately too
Now everybody’s died

Jerry — Another geezer checking in today. I’m 73 and not feeling a day older than 72. You know what annoys me lately? I don’t buy all the hype for the “all time rotation”, 4 aces, etc. up in Philly this year. Yes, I’ll give the their #1-2 over ours but I’ll take the Braves 3-5 this year over the Phils and I’ll take our 1-5 even up at worst. I think their 3-4 guys are questionable aces in that tiny park and if any of them goes down for a lengthy period I like the Braves for the division title.

I know Gonzo id FA next year will not return most likely, bad OBP, strikes out too much, shoddy defense on easy plays, etc..
Nate won’t be back most likely, opening an OF slot in CF.
My question is who plays SS next year,Marteen? I know he is a great athlete and would rather play the IF anyway but, is that viable? If so then that opens spots in both CF and LF for a guys like Schaeffer, and Wilkin Ramirez.

There are two great Irish pubs in Decatur, GA, if any of you locals want visit. Mac McGee’s on the square, and The Marley Public House on Ponce. Both have great food.

Was this earlier in the blog or on another blog? Info on Heyward’s back situation being a vertebra issue?
I thought he had a muscle tweak/pull. If he’s actually got a spinal issue, that could be serious in the long term. If it’s just muscles, it should go away with rest.

Jerry — Another geezer checking in today. I’m 73 and not feeling a day older than 72. You know what annoys me lately? I don’t buy all the hype for the “all time rotation”, 4 aces, etc. up in Philly this year.
I dislike the references that their rotation is the best in history. They aren’t going to be able to compete with the 1998 Braves, who had a rotation of Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Neagle, and Millwood. All five of those guys won at least 15 games that year. Hasn’t been done before or since. The Phillies can’t touch that and I bet they can’t touch the 1971 Orioles with Cuellar, Palmer, Dobson, and McNally who each won at least 20 games that year. I’ll give them props when they reach those pinnacles, and not until then.

Brooklyn Braves… I think I remember a few years ago, when Marteen was a utility infielder, that DOB said his best positions were third and second in that order, and short only if necessary. His skills seem to continue to develop so who knows today. Maybe DOB or Carroll will chime in… I know this, I’d like to see him offered an extended contract within the next year. A valuable guy no matter where he plays.

McCann met with Luis Salazar last night for a couple of hours at the hospital. Came away reassured that Salazar’s spirits are high despite losing his left eye.

I have a soft-spot or fondness for the people in uniform. Military,
fireman, policeman, nurses, doctors and yes even the mail carriers.
I was just enraged to think that the number of service years it was to retirement would not yield enough money to pay your bills.

I agree with you, Marteen, is just plain awsome, no matter where he is playing. That said, given our defensive liabilities, I’d rather see the future captain of our team, leading the efforts up the middle. Besides, much harder to find a SS, than a 3B when Chipper decides to hang it up.
On top of that, I like our OF depth as long as we stay healthy

Brooklyn Braves… All good points. One of my (baseball) fantasies though, is that the Braves swap a nice pitching prospect for Elvis or an Elvis-clone I’m not aware of. Somebody amazing at short that can get on and then steal some bases. Marteen may be that guy, he seems to be a work in development and has said he prefers the infield to the outfield.

Proctor’s only at $750,000 so I don’t think contract would be an issue (Martinez is probably better suited though because he can be an emergency starter if needed- not sure Proctor can)
