Regarding today’s blog, I really like Medlen. I don’t really know how the Brave’s FO view him, but I tend to think he has more value that it seems most Braves fans do. He gets the job done… with great determination.
Well said PTBNL. I’m thinking you kiss off a 13-1 start to a career, and a guy who consistantly strikes out more than a batter an inning [BEACHY] at your peril.

Here is an interesting tidbit… Does anyone know what our dear Milky Cabrera has for a batting average this spring? I was pretty astounded to say the least.
TIM COLLINS is projected as a potential starter in KC. Only effective pitcher we had that made KRIS MEDLEN look tall. Same as MATT YOUNG does for BROOKS CONRAD.
So what is the average age here? A burning question posed on St. Patty’s day in the mornin’.
I’m 67. Any other geezers out there. Geezerette nolie is 65. JERRY says he’s old, but won’t divulge. Come on JERRY give.
Dammit. Today was supposed to be my grandson’s first game, but he pulled a hamstring in a scrimmage game monday and may not play. I don’t think he should.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone!!! I’ll be 28 this Saturday, I wish I could celebrate St. Patty’s day like I use to but kids and responsibility kinda make it hard to act like a complete Drunk anymore. Oh well, IRISH I was drunk!!!
good morning all… I didnt get to watch the baseball game yest until last night and therefore stayed away from the blog all day yesterday (truly sucked).

I kinda figured you were about my age, but you got me by a few. I’m retired from the fire department, but still work a full-time job to pay the bills.
yeah O’brava, I think Sherrill got out over his skis a little bit against some right handed batters. Sherrill is gonna be REALLY good for neutralizing that murderer’s row of LH batters in Philly. He looks like he would be impossible to pick up by a LH batter.
Sherrill is gonna be REALLY good for neutralizing that murderer’s row of LH batters in Philly. He looks like he would be impossible to pick up by a LH batter.
If we didn’t sign him he would be with the Phillies right now (he picked the Braves over the Phillies) and there fans would be saying “yo dis dude gonna be da shis nit against dim LH hitters in A-Town, Heyward and McCanns ain’t got a chance yo!!”.
McFann, today we’re all a McSomething, right? Actually, I’ve been tracing my paternal heritage and have found that I am about a 7th generation American, but some of my dad’s ancestors came from Ireland and Scotland. He also had French and Native American ancestors. My natural hair color is kind of a dark blonde that gets red gold in the sun, and I have the fair skin of the Irish background. I got the dark eyes and high cheekbones from the Native American side. So, I guess I am really a mutt, but there is some Irish in there
The more lefty’s we have in our pen the better and the less they have in Philly the better. Not saying Sherrill was signed to prevent the Phillies from getting him. But it did keep the filthies from adding a quality LH’er to there pen…. Added Bonus for us!!
i think wren got sherrill to be a situational lefty to free o’flarety up. o’flarety is a pretty good pitcher and i believe could easily be a set up man or even occasional closer. but, losing dunn, it was looking like o
flarety had the LOOGY role. with sherrill being the left specialist, it frees o’flarety up, making our bullpen even more flexible. weve got alot of great arms out there.
My temper is probably result of the wee bit of Irish blood in me. My chiseled lines, big boned frame and dashing good looks are likely from my dominant Norwegian heritage.
DAP, I agree with you. I think Sherrill will serve as our situational lefty. That’s why I’m not too concerned about his ERA in ST, I think it’s naturally going to be inflated just because he’s working a full inning to get work in.. facing both righties and lefties.
scotch-irish and cherokee indian on my mom’s side, english on my dad’s side. i dont have any ancestors that came over after the civil war, so we’ve been here awhile. im 26 and a third.
I agree with you guys about Sherrill but I think he has a lot higher upside then being just situational. As recently as ‘09, he was lights out to both Lefties and Righties. With bullpen work being so much mental, I think he could really become very good if he gets that swagger back.
Scotch-Irish on one side and either Scotch or Irish on they other…they think. Supposed to have some native american in there, too. I think they are guessing to be honest.
bigchiefrg, that’s a good question. On both sides of my family, excepting my maternal grandfather’s side (which I can’t find out much about since I don’t have his mother’s maiden name), I’ve traced back to the early 1700’s and until that point, every one was born here.

Heh,heh, heh, growing up I see. Just wait ’till you’re sixty eight. Hey, I can’t BE the elder statesman on this blog. When I started in 2007, there were plenty of people that sweemed older than I. GIL……..little help.
richbrave: I feel the same way about Sherrill. Never was going to be on the cover of muscles and fitness but maybe his conditioning is playing a role in his decline???
Just two things: 1. “Just spring soreness”???? Hoodahell is HE kidding? “spring soreness” doe4snt last FIVE DAYS unless you have been sitting around all winter inhaling bon-bons. As much as I like Heyward, he seems destined to replace Chipper as the resident sick bay resident.
2. “Brian McCann just needs some at bats against lefties”, so you sit the rookie who ALSO needs those at bats?? Is Bobby Cox still pulling these strings? Brian has hit lefties and has a couple of years facing major league lefties. If Freeman is the first baseman of the future, wouldn’t HE need those at bats more than BeeMac?
God, I sure hope these guys don’t pan out like they are looking like they might.
Loads of major league talent, managed by minor league decisions.
I just think it’s funny because everyone seems to be Irish on St Patty’s day. I am protestant and still am wearing a green tie today. I do love the Guinness and a couple of fingers of bushmills too.
Happy St. Patty’s day and hey again, y’all….Back down to fill in for DOB for a few days….couple items of business.
1) Braves announced concert series for the summer, and I bet you wish DOB was here to give his musical analysis on it. All I can say is I’m especially excited for the first group announced – the Avett Brothers on April 10,….Yacht Revue on May 30….and going retro with Athens’ own B-52s on July 16…..The Braves will hold another concert on Sept. 17, band to be announced.
2) with the night game tonight (6:05 vs. Nats) new blog won’t be posted until later in the day.
I haven’t been all too impressed either but I think Sherrill could be the LH version of Moylan. Moylan gets RH out and Sherrill gets LH out. We shall see.
bigchieffrg I agree with you guys about Sherrill but I think he has a lot higher upside then being just situational. As recently as ‘09, he was lights out to both Lefties and Righties.
in ‘09 righties OPSed almost .700 against him, more than twice as high as lefties. while .700 isnt really high, i wouldnt call it “lights out”.
in fact, i can only find one year in his entore career (2007) where he was really good against righties, and in his career he has given up a .800 OPS to righties. no, i think his ceiling is a lights out LOOGY, and a risk doing anything else.
bigchieffrg On the heritage thing, how many times removed before you just become plain American?
i say you dont have to be removed at all to be just plain american, if youre an american. were just talking about ancestry here. i mean, its like looking at all of MLB and saying “there all baseball players!” Yes, but some play for the NL and some for the AL, and it subdivides further from there. no biggie. they are all still baseball players.
I’m not sure between LEW and I. I might shade him a tad. But he and I are two of the only older regulars here still posting. GIL in MECHANICSVILLE is younger than I, but closer to myself than to your age. He does read here a bit, but rarely posts unlike my loquacious self…..But that true to form for me. Don’t ask if you don’t want an opinion……..right or wrong, and I’m both here frequently.
AT, you’re turning 40? 40??? Pretty soon you’ll be commiserating with Lew and nolie about your hip hurting before it rains and the rising cost of prescription medication.
I’m 36 and I can already see the change happening… on the 4th of July I get mad at the kids setting off fireworks in the neighborhood because they scare my dog. I yell and people who drive too fast in my neighborhood…
Lot’s of interesting heritage in here! I’ve got some Austrian in me, too, I think…a little German, a tiny bit of Indian…all adds up to just plain American!
AT, nope, didn’t get to even turn the PS3 on… did you play at all?
I am starting to think the secret to hitting is to guess high heat with every pitch (someone on here said that a while ago). If you guess high and guess fastball then you’ll set yourself up well because a) you’ll know if you need to sit heater or offspeed and b) if it’s not in the upper third you know to look low or take the pitch completely.
I’m going to try and get on tonight and test that out to see if it improves my hitting fortunes at all.
Geez, you guys……..It’s easier to divulge personal info [age, etc.] anonymously than face to face isn’t it?
Thought I’d incorporate a little personal green into the post equation today in honor of my maternal grandfather. Now if the green in the stock market would just take off……..
c’mon, dont you watch movies? check out “Dumb and Dumber” its one of the funniest movies ever. you only need to see the first few minutes to catch that reference i just ht you with.
